The worst part of One Piece being a Shonen Battle manga is that there are so many fans that only care about the action and will take moments like these at face value. Rather than thinking "what does this mean for the story?" they think "what does this mean for power-scaling?"

@BlueCheeseLucci But that is literally not how her powers work. She can't just give random people other powers. Distorted future is an expression of a possible future she can see for herself, which is why her being a kid is so helpful in it's use. Plus she's only been shown to be able to do it for a limited amount of time. She'll get one or two attacks off before she has to revert.

Distorted Future is a play on how children can dream up countless futures for themselves; Think, a child saying they'll be an astronaut or movie star.
So it's limited to her vision of her future; Meaning she will not be thinking that she can be like Kizaru or something. Specially since she doesn't like them

The more annoying part is that this doesn't mean ANYTHING for powerscaling because Bonney using this ability doesn't make her as strong as Luffy. I don't think people are even bothered by this because of powerscaling tbh I think it's just because they hate Gear 5. Complaints come up whenever something happens with this form. I think people are just using the Bonney thing as an excuse to hate on Gear 5.

I feel like people are forgetting the fact that the few times she's used "distorted future", it's been for one singular move. I expect she'll revert back to normal once they do a big combined attack and push saint Marcus back so he can't keep following the ship. I think its less about her having Nika's abilities, and more about showing through the transformation that she actually feels like she's finally "free".

Just going to mention this, but she did use Distorted Future to change into a muscular form akin to Kuma or even Luffy when in gear 5 when he gives himself muscles. Fully agreed for a couple reasons: as you said, because that's consistently how her power's been shown. Also because their goal is literally just to beat him back to cover their escape.
Overall it feels like a lot of people are kinda overreacting to Bonney's form here. It's cool and big for her as a buff and thematically. But as shown so far, it isn't THAT game-changing in the grand scheme of things and certainly doesn't break the power system.

I'm baffled that people are conflicted on Bonney here; I've been waiting for this for weeks and it's probably the most thematically important moment in the arc, if not in One Piece as a whole.
For hundreds of years an uncountable number of people have fought for freedom against tyranny, making small progress, setting plans into motion, inspiring people with their dreams and their wills so that they may be carried forward beyond even failure or death. By luck or by inevitability Luffy has become the recipient of these wills as he aspires towards his dream and fights tooth and nail for the dreams and the freedom of other people, and in doing draws others to support him. In the penultimate moment of the fight against Kaido, he fully actualizes and embodies those wills and that history by giving everything in a nearly hopeless struggle to free a whole people from unimaginable oppression, and incarnates into a symbol which embodies perfect freedom, and the joy which that ideal draws forth. That is all brilliant, and it is a logical step for this series as it reaches its conclusion to manifest its core themes in this way, but there is a problem.
One Piece is a reflection of our own world, its themes and its history paralleling our own, and our own world is driven by a history of unfathomable horror, which in a Manga ostensibly for kids can only touch lightly upon those subjects. A group of unaccountable elites using military hegemony to enforce imperial rule upon the whole world? That military using force to cut down civilians affected by horrible labor conditions that cause adverse health effects? Slavery? A Japanese force made to create weapons for a world war? A fascist regime in a Spain-like country? Assuming that Oda wants us to apply the lessons he is teaching us to our own world; that he is passing on his knowledge and his beliefs and his will onto a new generation that will carry it into the future, how does he make the jump from the strange world of One Piece where these themes can manifest literally, in the form of devil fruits and haki, to our world where those themes manifest in less clear ways?
He shows that a child, in spite of the horror of the world, can imagine a better future and fight for that future by looking to Luffy, and that they can fully embody that desire for freedom and achieve that dream. Bonney's power turns her dream into a reality, but when Saturn, a representative of the tyranny that would deny her freedom sees this, he tries to convince her that her dreams are not only impossible to achieve, but literally not real in the first place. Luffy, in contrast, physically embodies the reality of her dream, and encourages her to seek it and imagine it. She becomes that dream that she dreams for the future. One Piece is a reflection of our own world, its themes and its history paralleling our own, and when I see Bonney transform into Nika I can see, in the faintest glimpse, the dreams that I imagine for the future. I can imagine myself fighting for a better world. I can hope that I could embody Luffy and Joyboy and Nika. I can feel reassured knowing that even in death or in failure, my deeds or my words might inspire others to carry that torch in my absence. When that optimistic child imagines a future that is free and becomes Nika, it means that we can all do the same if, through acts of great courage and willpower, we choose to pursue that dream as well.

    • @pheonixr1337
      @pheonixr1337 3 месяца назад +9

It's also symbolic of the hopes that we put on the next generation. The hope that we feel when we see a child look at the world with wonder in their eyes. Children are the future and this chapter was an amazing example of that idea.

    - Both Lilith and Atlas are named after mythological figures who opposed the main gods in their respective tales (Lilith the Christian god, Atlas the Olympians in Greek Mythology), which nicely ties into them opposing the gods/divinity of the World Government.
    - York is named after the city of York in England, which was long considered the seat of Catholicism in England, and often banded together with the crown to enrich themselves (parallel with York allying with the WG to enrich herself/become a Celestial Dragon). I love that there's a "second" Nika. Luffy doesn't care about prophecy, he doesn't believe that he's destined for anything. Bonnie becoming Nika is the greatest victory Luffy has achieved and is the perfect manifestation of Luffy's will and what his character is supposed to be.
If there is one true goal that Luffy has, it's to strive for freedom for all of his friends and the world.
Luffy's MO is not to just be strong to save others, it's to make a world where everyone is strong enough to save themselves and follow their dreams.
Being able to inspire others to be just as free as the literal god of Freedom is Gear 5's whole purpose, with being strong as a side effect. It may have come up suddenly, but it has more than justified its existence by now. Nika's beat seems to compel others to laugh and dance in an infectious manner, and that same energy has now inspired a child of slaves to believe wholeheartedly that she deserves to be free.
If Bonny COULDN'T become Nika with her fruit, a power that literally works to create a future that the user believes can happen, then G5 would have failed and had no use beyond a simple gag.
Luffy wouldn't get frustrated that someone got his powers in a "cheap" way, he would be ecstatic to see that Bonny is able to act just as free as him.

i think its also important and emotionally amazing to note that the lesson Luffy is teaching Bonny is the same lesson that Kuma's dad tried to teach him right before he was shot. that no matter where you are, freedom and Joy is just a thought away, even when you are imprisoned or chased after by a giant death-bird you can always be free if you choose to be. to me that's amazing, and feels like a lesson that Oda is trying to teach his girls through the story.

I think Bonney cant copy df abilities, but she can imagine herself to be someone she knew to be real. Like she cant be an ice ice fruit user, but she can choose future where she is giant, or Buddha if she believes Buddha to be real
If she could imagine a future where she ate like chop chop fruit then she is imagining a future where she didnt have her toshi toshi no me fruit power
So while her belief in Nika lets her turn into Nika, maybe she can only copy what Luffy does, but Luffy pushes what we think Nika can do each time purely on instinct and letting df guide him.
I am sure there are other limitations on it too
But other than that, unlike Luffy, Bonney is pretty strong from the start, she got gear 3 equivalent and wrecked a CP8 agent when she turned 10, with not much combat experience beforehand

I think the reason Vegapunk didnt point a finger at the World Government is because like he said before, he isnt sure who is in the "Moral Right". He might also not have enough information based on his findings to say exactly WHO is the one making the world sink and he might not even know that they are leading the World Government in secrecy. Or he could be thinking about the average civilians safety and not wanting to cause all out war/revolt against the World Government which would likely result in the massacre of many islands. I think Vegapunk believes that Luffy will save the world and if thats the case he might only be interested in expressing "heres what the past was like" and "hey figure out how not to die by sinking into the ocean" and "Hey D people amongst you is blah blah blah".

I’ve been in the "Bonney's going to join the RA” camp for a while. And with these Nika-like powers, I can definitely see it. Because now, Bonney can act as an apostle for Nika the Sun God. At the same time, I’m also considering the “Bonney going to join the SHs” camp more than ever. Her turning into a Nika form feels very apprentice-coded. Especially with the way Luffy supports and recognizes her power like he does with all of his crew mates and friends. It goes into the themes of Luffy’s leadership that have been prevalent since Post-timeskip. Then again, Oda has always been good at the SHs’ power sets not overlapping too much. But I love the sentiment that the daughter of slaves can see herself as completely free. And I've seen many people worried that now they can spread Gear 5 like in Naruto. I don't see that. It’s not Luffy affecting Bonney. It’s just Bonney’s powers. Bonney’s powers come from belief. So it’s her belief that she can be free. It’s the reason it didn’t really work when she wanted a “Nika-like future” is because Nika isn’t about power or physical strength, it’s about freedom. And in this world and to Bonney, Nika is the embodiment of freedom. Plus, Bonney being a twelve-year-old, the same age as Oda’s core audience, allows Oda to tell his audience that anyone can be Nika, anyone can be free. And I think that’s really cool.

Option 2: The bird is going to sink the ship with a final fireball only to get brutally hit in the neck in the last second by the Thousand Sunny that’s been launched from the clouds with a Coup De Burst! 💪

I understand how people doesn't feel nice that Luffy had to do all the hard work to reach Gear 5 but also it was Luffy who encourage Bonney to be able to use Gear 5.
Luffy really doesn't care all about Joyboy or Nikka. Everyone keeps calling him Joyboy or Nikka but to him, he is Luffy.
To Luffy being the chosen one doesn't matter. He does what he wants. Saving the world is just the aftermath to his goal.
But what if Luffyuses the power of Dreams to turn everyone into Nikka and Imu uses the power of Nightmares to turn the Elders to demons.

The amount of haters for Gear 5 Bonney is around the same amount of hate Gear 5 got when it was initially revealed. She's no different to Sugar or Momo, she doesn't seem to have haki and is still learning the possibilities with her fruit, which is naturally nerfed by the fact that it gets weaker as she gets old.

I liked the Bonnika reveal, you could see it coming since 1101 and it means a lot.
What I want to see from Bonnika is her having a different power set manifested. Her body can be all stretchy because of the Distorted Future affecting her but I want to see her age powers rolling out like a wave on everything. Because this is not her as Nika, this is her at her freest, it has her core identity in it.
Imagine this: Bonney in this form - what I consider her full awakening of her fruit, it's only fair - and as the drums beat, swathes of age jewels jump out of everyone around them, making everyone jovial. Those jewels fall down to the sea in a glittering rain like Starfall, making the sky look doubled with the sea.
Or maybe: her distorted future affects everything she touches, the middle age giants go back to their peak form, the ship restores itself, the giant robot is in pristine condition, Franky is in a future where he has the powers of a Pacifista, her dad is back... All because in her freest form, her particular powers have no limits, the Nika form is but an image to represent that she has managed to awaken herself and bring out her image of an Utopic future.
I find all of these possibilities way more interesting than just being able to replicate Luffy, and more in theme too! It's not because she looks like Nika that she'll act just like Luffy, the user of the devil fruit of Nika, she'll act on what she believes Nika should be.
All these unique possibilities get me very excited to see what happens.

I love this for Bonney. It fits so well with the story that Oda has been telling this arc. I hope Oda handles it correctly. We know Bonney can't keep up Distorted Future for long and I think their should be some restrictions to the power. Like maybe it can only imagine Zoan powers or physical atteibutes and not let's say the Dark-Dark fruit and then she could just use it. And also we know she is restricted by information. So if I say turn into a future where you have Kaido's Azure Dragon fruit, she wouldn't be able to do it accurately.

Exactly, people say she can copy DF but so far all she has done is change her bodily shape which certainly emulates other fruits but that’s just because she’s modeling it off the stories of Nika/being free which she doesn’t realize a fruit is responsible for Luffy’s Nika form.

I like to think of it from a Luffy POV. If everyone gets to be Nikki, then everyone can be as free as him, and I think that would make him extremely happy. It also fits with what Nikka is meant to be, a bringer of liberation. Luffy seeing his friends and allies do as they please would be his ultimate win. It might not be a great pay off for us to see his power replicated so easily, but I can't see it bringing anything other than joy to our boy. PLUS, imagine Luffy's reaction to a Nikka form General Franky

I, for one, am actually hype for the next chapter with Nika-Bonney. Previously everything gear-5-Luffy did (attacks wise) was really fun to see, so I’m really exited for the combo moves Luffy and Bonney could perform.
I’m also not really of the opinion that Bonney transforming into a Nika-form doesn’t make sense. It was established that her distorted future ability only works as well as her capacity to believe/hope in what she wants. So it makes sense she can transform into Nika (and not any other devil fruits) because of the strong bond she has with the concept of Nika. Bonney has praying to Nika and dreaming of Nika for all her life (thanks to Kuma). Also Luffy literally reignited her belief in Nika a few chapters ago, so her belief is stronger than ever.
To be honest, I’m not really thinking too much if that makes sense “power-scaling wise”, I just think it was foreshadowed character wise and feels earned for her. Bonney and Kuma have been through a lot. Bonney has earned the right to feel as free as Nika, I’d say.
Also Bonney has been experimenting with her powers since she was a child so it also technically took a lot of time for Bonney to reach a high skill level with her distorted future ability.
I’m honestly not that worried for what Oda has in store for this situation.

    MY BABY GIRL IS FREEEEEEEEE😭
i actually couldnt stop crying this chapter, Bonney and Kuma have very quickly shot up the ranks in my heart and seeing her finally speak with Nika and realize that the future DOES have a bright path ahead just fills me with too many emotions dude.
her entire life she's been waiting for this moment and now she is fighting SIDE BY SIDE with the Warrior of Liberation himself in the face of everything that has ever hurt her and her family
as for the power scaling combat level side of it, i dont believe Bonney is truly in a Gear 5 state like Luffy. she is in a form that she believes to be equal to Luffy, but since neither of them really understand the power of Nika she can't ever reach his same level. she will most likely be STUPID strong, just like when we first saw Gear 5, but i wouldn't be shocked if she gets hit by the immense blowback and strength drain from using it just like Luffy did in the fight against Kaido.
she's going to have to take just as much time as Luffy, if not more, to train this transformation and maintain it without totally wiping out mid battle.
ALSO KEEP IN MIND: her Fruit LITERALLY allows her to become anything she envisions as long as she CAN envision it, so i don't see why people are upset about her becoming Nika. we've BEEN knew that her fruit is fucking absurd and that her limits have always only ever been her imagination LMAO
either way, im personally ecstatic that she has unlocked this power and i think it makes perfect sense story-wise

On a side note, I feel like it's all but confirmed at this point that Bonney is gonna join the Straw Hats as the apprentice of the crew. Luffy is quite directly taking on the Mentorship role towards Bonney and considering that she's been looking for Luffy/Nika and how much Nika ties into Bonney and Kuma's characters and backstories I think she's the perfect fit for the Final Straw Hat (assuming you don't consider Yamato/Vivi joining later on as being the Final crewmates, which I don't as they're practically honorary Straw Hats already)

We hear a few common sentiments and a lot of assumption in the dislike of this single panel. I think there are clear themes and there is clear messaging here that contradicts these rare criticisms.
While he once said that he writes for a target audience of his 15-year old self, Eiichiro Oda has two daughters, one of which is about 14-15 years old. What message do you think he wants her to take away from this thematic beauty? Is it "it's only okay if he NERFs her, and she's weak..." Or "she shouldn't be comparable to the mighty main character..." Or "she needs to go to an orphanage, and not fight for her own freedom..."
I think he said "this one's for you, my daughters... I want you to believe you can do anything - even defeat monsters and become like gods." And I want Bonney to be able to do something cool, too.
What do you think? 🙂 Cheers, RUclips!

A thought just crossed my mind about the Vegapunks...what if it's not that York is "evil" per se but that she interpreted and evaluated that, with what they learned about the lost century, the WG was on the right side? What if among the VPs there is an unknown divide between those that evaluated things differently about the whole story, ones that saw Joy Boy as right, those that saw WG as right and those that were neutral like Stella? Right now, without the whole story, there cannot be a moral judgment. We the readers have been judging it like we do because WG not only did evil stuff but they also are the antagonist of the SH but there is a possibility that at the end of it we could see things in a different light

So I think the story is setting up Luffy to not be the main liberator but the one who brings people to liberate themselves. So I think Bonney achieving true freedom might be the start of that.
It’s just a theory but it makes sense to me.

18:48 I have a different way of thinking about this. If Luffy hadn’t spent all this time working on this, hadn’t spent all this time training and fighting, this moment wouldn’t be possible. Luffy’s efforts gave Bonney this freedom. Gave Bonney this form to emulate. She couldn’t have imagined this otherwise.

This is one of the best thumbs I've seen, imho. It's incredible. My only quibble is that the coloration of Nika skin on them both should be ghostly/angelic/mystical, not a realistic tan color.

I think the Nika propagation theory is fine, and is on theme, honestly. Like think about it: Joyboy is someone whose identity the WG/CD kept from the world, and now Luffy is (unknowingly) spreading Joyboy's ideology by giving everyone the ability to smile, and be free, not making them smile by force with the smile fruit. I love it. And the way Luffy encourage little Bonney to achieve it made my heart melt. :')

@@moonlight2870 I disagree and think surveillance equipment is basically to be expected. Doesn't have to be a horror story but it could raise some eyebrows.

It's one thing to transform but to just imagine a future where you're free, I wonder how much of an awakening is actually there, in Bonney, or of its visual with some of the wild movements of G5

Just now realizing that Bonney’s devil fruit perfectly embodies vegapunk’s hypothesis for the origin of devil fruits in general. Her power is literally the embodiment of that idea of wish fulfillment of “if only I could do this”

I know I'm a few weeks late, but after this chapter, I can confidently say Bonney is a top 3 One Piece character for me. I love her transforming into Nika for all of the reasons you mentioned. The theming of all of this has been perfect. I seriously will never understand the people that care more about the definitive ranking of who is more powerful than the fact that this is one of the best character moments in the entire series! I'm genuinely thinking up a Bonney/Luffy in Nika form tattoo because I love this so much

I loved it. I guess I can see why people are upset, but, to me, it just makes sense all around.
For Kuma and for Bonney, it is the crescendo to their arc.
For Luffy, it's just more of what he does. Inspire, mentor, and trigger change in those who need it. He's done that with everyone on his crew, Vivi, Boa, Rebecca, Shirahoshi, and Momonsuke. Bonney had it in her, she had been trying to achieve this form based of what her father told her. Now that she's seen the real deal, it was a no-brainer that she would achieve it. Luffy just had to show her how and he did. To me it doesn't cheapen Luffy's struggles or his hard work. Just like how a big brother or big sister's struggles and hard work aren't cheapened when showing their kid sibling how to do something. To Luffy, it's not a bother. The only way it would be bothersome for him is if they are constantly crying that they can't do it. Bonney hasn't, she's even said to Luffy "Show me how it's done then!"
Big brother mocking little sister for not getting it. Little sister shouting back to show her or shut up. Big brother shows off, little sister learns to do it in her own way.

The "but Luffy worked so hard to reach this point" angle is probably the most (only) sane angle that I've seen from the backlash, and I do get it. My perspective is that Bonney's transformation would not even be within the realm of possibility if Luffy hadn't unlocked his first. So it's not that Luffy's arduous journey was invalidated, it's more like his efforts have unlocked a new level of freedom and power against oppression for not only himself, but for Bonney as well (and possibly others). The idea of laughter and joy being contagious would lend itself well to there being a whole JoyCrew one day, although personally I would prefer if it was just limited to Luffy and a watered-down version in Bonney.

I may have commented this already, but I think Nami is doing most of the managing of the Straw Hats.
She coordinates her group, like sending Jinbe to fetch Zoro. And Sanji and her have both been asking the other how their group is doing whenever they contact each other.
