I'm somewhat of a beginner myself. VG should've included the spacer in the package(more cost) with something written(more cost) for the beginners. I wouldn't have known about it. Now we're all smarter thanks to those who know more than us, who share their knowledge with us.
I'm a 100% MTB guy and yet I watch every one of your episodes and do it on the 65" OLED! There are so many standards (lol 'standards') in the bike industry that something like this is simply inevitable. Great job getting this out there for VG Sports.
Since the shifting is better with the sram cassette and the width of it is different, the cog spacing might be slightly off on the VG sports cassette for this derailleur. One millimeter across 12 gears is not terrible but that means that optimal positioning is off by +0.5mm on one side and -0.5mm on the other side. I think, this might be the reason for different shift performance, noise, and difficulty to set up properly. This is also the case when comparing SRAM XD-R cassettes with the Shimano road equivalent. You can get it to work but you really shouldn't because cog spacing is off by 0.1mm and the roller diameter of the chain (Think flat top chain) is different, too. For MTBs, the chains should still be compatible, I think. However, the SRAM cassette is an MTB cassette and the derailleur might be built for the cog spacing specific to this standard - after all, it was there before XD-R etc. - while the VG sports cassette might use some other standard. Or it is just due to manufacturing. Over all, it is a shame that there is this whole mess of "standards" in cycling. Twelve speed drive trains are not compatible with each other, brake systems use different fluids, and don't even get me started on bottom brackets...
No, the cog spacing cannot be different. The reason of the VG carrier is shorter is because the offset of the higher cogs. It is a trick to fit more cogs on shorter freehubs. Closer the higher cogs are from spokes, more room is available. It is just the manufacturer choose of design. And, of course, shifting performance is directly related with tecnology and HG tooth profile.
@@rupiamasterconfig The cog spacing could possibly be different. Depending on if they designed it around shimano or SRAM, microspline or not, its possible they copied the wrong dimension. 3.65mm and 3.55mm. Or just manufacturing tolerance as well.
Much respect for taking the time to set the record straight on the cassette. I have made my fair share of mistakes swapping components around from different companies. Live and learn.
Just discovered you a couple days ago and I cannot stop watching you. I love how you merge cycling and engineering which are as well my passions. Well done!!!
Did some hardness testing on a VG cassette and it was...woeful. They also don't seem to make a microspline or xd freehub version, is unless I'm wrong, which kind of rules it out for MTBs.
I used a similar 12sp HG Cassette on my smart trainer coming back from a back injury, but other than that I wouldn't see much of a market. I do have some wheels from an 11spd 29er but these are non Trek so pre boost spacing, which I suspect many 11spd mtb wheels would be.
I'm still using HG hubs on MTB and there's still a lot of guys that are still wanting HG hubs so they must be trying to get market share. There aftermarket companies are still on the backfoot, not many generic Chinese brands offering microspline not XD.
One of the reasons I love your channel Luke, you are learning as we all are while building bikes......... and I have to admit, I came across a similar problem but it was a Microshift 12 speed MTB cassette on a Mavic 27.5 MTB wheel....... You only know if you know. Mistakes are how we learn. I wouldn't have known about it needing a spacer. As long as we admit our mistakes and the people around us are constructive then all is good 👍
Luke, Love the show as always! I don't think your mistake IS common knowledge. The Chinese were really the first to offer cassettes of this range for the 10sp carrier. What this allowed for, was all those folks out there running old school MTB bikes the ability to make a 1x conversion with out replacing wheels and other sorts of things. What the Chinese manufactures have been great at is filling the gaps the the big manufactures have failed to do. The big names are just trying to move forward selling new stuff making old stuff obsolete. Look at threaded bottom brackets. When the big names all moved to press fit you suddenly could not get a standard threaded bottom bracket from the big names. China had them! Yes I know Shimano Dura Ace kept one but the cups were smaller in diameter. Now threaded is coming back! haha Keep up the great work!!
11-50 is insane. I swapped part of my old MTB set onto my road bike to give me 12-40 and with that I had issues with the derailleur having both the range and clearance for the 40 ring. It did make it somewhat easier to keep moving my fat ar## up steeper hills though.
And my current road bike can't even properly fit an 11-28 xD Ignore the fact that it's a retro Peugeot, and all the old parts limit it. The 11-50 on my trek touring project works great but I just love old school builds
I would expect the indexing to improve as you keep making tiny tweaks during use and wearing in..but there is also a limit to smoothness with 1x setups. Looks decent!

Fair play on owning up to your mistake. It is easy to forget that some 11 and 12sp cassette have a slightly recessed look to the spiders to be able to fit on a 10sp hub and sometimes it's not cler which is which. Quite often the sprockets are in line with each other so the compatibility is there.
Cool video as always Luke! I was wondering if you managed to repair the front brake lever in the gravel L2 groupset with epoxy and if so how is it holding up?
Respect for this! 🥖 one thing that may help the shifting is the b tension adjustment. Usually it’s adjusted to allow the mech to clear those huge sprockets but if it’s too extreme in either direction it can effect shifting throughout the cassette … worth a fiddle
Just finished building my own Trifox X8 bike and watched your videos all along the way. Although, I have a question about cables, are you meant to leave the plastic guide tubes inside the frame? Or do you take them out once cabled?

I have an e-bike with an electric rear hub motor, and a 11-32 cassette I think (single at the front). Is it possible to change the cassette to a silent one? Hi Luke. Big fan of your channel. Love it! Last year I bought a set of lightweight easton rim brake wheels. I bought a used sram 1070 10 speed cassette. It was used, I think it was in good shaped but older model, 11-26. The problem is I get a crunchy metallic sound when I am under load. I took off the cassette and greased it up and it got better but then started again. I tried to regrease but no luck. I am 100% sure its the cassette or freehub because it doesn't crunch with my other wheelset and cassette. Do you think a new cassette would fix the problem? Do you think VG sports is worth trying? Thanks. You are awesome!

Luke, the fact that the cassette is 1mm shorter than the SRAM cassette, but the spacer is 1.8 (actually, I think it's 1.45mm, no?), tells me that there is a bit of funkiness between the two cassettes in terms of chain lines. Do you index the rear derailleur between the cassette swaps? Also, I don't like that cable housing between the frame and derailleur. I think the bend is too sharp. Could you lengthen it by...25mm? That might help. Others thoughts on my points/line of thinking? 🥖

You inspired me to build a budget/china bike as well, your videos are awesome! any info about twitter frames? I only found limited info online but ordered the gravel v3 because I love the aero design. really curious on how it will hold up.
For the minority of people who slap 11/12 speed wide range cassettes onto 10 speed hubs, the compatibility is a must (provided the spokes still clear). Saves time, money and faff on getting a 'proper' solution, and the spacer is no hardship for those who have the correct kit to begin with 🙂
My experience with VG Cassette was good for the price, durable and shifting ok but not perfect (tested with Sram, Shimano and KMC chains). VG Chains on the other side are not good at all: very noisy, lots of trouble indexing and got stretched quite fast. By far Sunrace cassettes are better and as cheap as VG or Sunshine.

Mavic All Road with SRAM Apex 1 / PG-1130.
The sunrace cassettes are the same you need a spacer. Might want to check the cogs that are humour as sometimes the lesser known brands have a few burrs that need a file. Ever tried a road cassette on some MTB wheels that fit an 10,11,12 but won't let and 11spd road cassette get the 11 tooth cog on.
It would have been nice if there was a warning of some kind giving you this info. I would have made the same mistake in your position. Love the videos btw 🥖
hey Trace Velo. Been testing the TPU inner tubes from RideNow (although there are other brands on aliexpress). A couple of kms with them, and managed to drop 250gr (83gr per tyre + spare inner tube on the bag). Might one to give them a review!
I'd be very interested to see how the new Ali Express Microspline cassettes do... They're XTR weight at SLX cost so would be a no-brainer assuming they're okay. As for the VG Sports chains, my experience was 170 miles until reaching 0.7 on my chain checker. Nicht gut.
Hi Luke, love your vids and would have a request for you... I'Ve got two little kids around here and turns out they kinda like cycling... they are way more succesful than I am - and I'm doing their DS and their mechanic trying to give them the material they need to compete. Here's the thing - until now they are riding my stuff I just don't need at the moment - so we've got two 24" road race bikes with dura ace/ultegra standing around. But I do sense that for the next bikes this might not be the first choice anymore. Looking at all the LTWOO groupsets, the Sensah stuff you've presented I wonder what would work for the kids - and could I get them a better setup with new cheap china parts rather trying to fetch used top tier stuff from 10 years ago... Therefore it would be great if you could also have a brief look into reach end force needed to use the levers in your future videos... And a bit of the mechanism (this is why sensah wouldn't work so far - can't explain the shifting mechanism to a 5yo... seriously, I'm just too stupid to explain it to a child)
When you realize he's not only a good aliexpress mechanic but also a good tabletop gamer. 🥖🥖 Thanks for the mtb cassette updates! How's the broken lever? Looked like a minor crash to me in the video, weird to see that the whole lever broke

Ever tried a road cassette on some MTB wheels that fit an 10,11,12 but won't let and 11spd road cassette get the 11 tooth cog on.
Hi. I’m really curious if the LTWOO GRT will work great with the ZTTO 9-50T 12 speed XD cassette. Please do a video if you have tried it.
Ive never seen this problem before, 12s sprocket needs a spacer on 11s body hub, so how's the indexing ? Is it ok?
It's not uncommon in MTB to add a spa?’’‘_ ones are often used
Can I leave my derailleur in low gear ⚙️ without stretching and ruining the spring tension?
Many 🥖 to you Luke for admitting you weren't spot on - many would just brush it under the carpet in blissful ignorance
It would have been nice if there was a warning of some kind giving you this info. I would have made the same mistake in your position. Love the videos btw 🥖
I thought perhaps you would also mention some quick update on the damage to the shifter that happened when you had the accident on the bike.
hey Trace Velo. Been testing the TPU inner tubes from RideNow (although there are other brands on aliexpress). A couple of kms with them, and managed to drop 250gr (83gr per tyre + spare inner tube on the bag). Might one to give them a review!
Are the baguettes emojis because now he has left his job he is looking for a new bread winner..........holds for applause.......nice job
Best regards Luke!
I guess I never knew this but I thought anything 12 speed was microspline or XD for free hubs. Didn’t think I could do this on my setup! But you can
Durn, I was hoping to put something like this on my bike, but can't seem to find anything compatible with SRAM DX
When you realize he's not only a good aliexpress mechanic but also a good tabletop gamer. 🥖🥖
Thanks for the mtb cassette updates! How's the broken lever? Looked like a minor crash to me in the video, weird to see that the whole lever broke
xD
Great content Luke! Really nice videos and the production value is great! We really need a video about top products (would buy) from all the products you tested. Maybe a way for you to get some affiliate money from great recommendations?
