- A passionate but fleeting love affair is at the center of "Of an Age," a queer Australian romance from writer-director Goran Stolevski. Elias Anton and Thom Green star as young men who meet and quickly fall for each other at a time when they're both in flux. Alonso and Christy have differing opinions on the film, which is in theaters now. Co-starring Hattie Hook.

I completely see your point on how it might have worked better if had been just that one day, but I think that time jump is more for queer people to be able to relate to. It's an incredibly isolating experience to grow up queer in an unaccepting environment and there is no other feeling like the first experience of freedom you get from that isolation with someone. To then lose that person who freed you definitely leaves you with a hole you can't ever really fill again. I think that's what the time jump was all about - it was the cold, hard slap of reality.
Spot on.
It's a beautiful movie that brought out my emotions in a movie theatre after a long, long time. This movie comes very close to the reality of human relationships, especially gay.
Glad it moved you! Thanks for watching our review.
Wow. As a Serbian gay guy, I cant wait to see this. Could be the first Serbian-born gay character in world cinema (as the Serbs are pretty homophobic and don't make gay-themed movies). Thanks for the review!
Let us know what you think!
saw this last night and absolutely loved it and that 15 or more minute chunk where they are talking in the car is as alonso said a really good way of giving a character backstory without feeling like exposition!!! great review as always you guys!!!
Thanks for watching! Glad you loved it.
I usually find that with time jumps or flashbacks, one setting usually works a lot better than the other.
Love that you referenced "Weekend" -- or, as we call it, "Briefs Encounter" -- which is one of our all-time favorite films, like, ever, and though we weren't going to run out and see it, after your review(s), kind of can't wait for it to stream. Thanks as always, Christy and Alonso.
That's funny! Thank you for watching.
It's honestly really cool to see Thom Green again, in anything making it to our side of the pond (or our hemisphere, more appropriately). The last thing I saw him in was "Halo: Forward Unto Dawn," Microsoft's odd but lovely web-series accompanying the release of the video game. Thom was its beating heart and mind both-and all the proof I needed he could act the fuck outta something!
He was very good in this! Both charming and sensitive.
Hahaha… I had similar feelings to the both of you. Like Alonso, I was a bit confused at the beginning - the first scene in the present with the phone can and the tears. Then the flashback with the frantic sister and her accent and screaming.
I do like that one day - similar to Before Sunrise thing.
The flash forward was nice to see how they changed. It seemed like they moved on but at the same time, it was a special moment for both of them? I liked it enough that I want to hear a commentary from the director what he wanted to convey.
From a different review, the commentator questioned why Adam was interested in Kol. He was a dorky kid who might be gay, but hasn’t come out yet and he was nervous and vomited. The present Kol was more confident man. I loved the transformation.
I definitely had mixed feelings, but like the set up and mood. 6 or 7 as well. But would love a commentary by the director or actors to understand more.
Just watched it...I cried. I am gonna watch Weekend and call me by your name after this. Why you ask? I have a therapy session tomorrow.
All very cathartic!
I went back to check the beginning where Likola was missing Ebony, which I figured is way after the end of the film., where the boys reunite and perhaps leading to be with each other. That would led to eventually create a distancing in Ebony and Nikolais friendship or who knows probably more than that. I think Nikolai was bit of bisexual, for sure Ebony had more feelings for him than he did, which was hinted in their stair from far after her wedding. Plus Nikolai caught the other girl in relationship with Ebony's newly wed. Clearly Ebony's life wasnt going to be simple either. That's where i feel the movie left us with too many loose ends, the power of first half should hv been sustained better in more powerful second half. Could hv been a grrat queer film, missed the mark a bit.
Lmao omg I was thinking of Strictly Ballroom too! He’s never going to get Tina Sparkle as a partner! Lol
I am absolutely dragging my boyfriend to this film. Also, unrelated to the film, but I just noticed your logo is of an egg with an arrow, which looks like a piece of bacon. Clever logo.
Thank you! And you'll have to let us know what you guys think.
You will be sorry. It was horrible.
Can't wait to see this movie, as its from the same director that did what in my opinion was the best movie of 2022, the powerful and moving "You won't be alone". Please check it out if you haven't!
Thanks for the suggestion!
I gave it a 6 mostly for the acting, which was excellent. One thing that bothered my friend and I were the extended closeups in the car with the shaky handheld camera that seemed to go on forever. We found it very off-putting. It was just too much. I'm no director, but had I directed that scene, I would have cutaway at least once or twice (maybe with an exterior overhead shot of the car driving along the road) just to give the poor audience a break from those long, claustraphobic closeups. Ugh. Other than that, it was an OK film. It was certainly no Call Me By Your Name or Firebird.
It was not Call Me By Your Name, that's true. But Luca is a master. Thanks for watching!
I thought that was intentional… an immersive experience as you eavesdrop into their conversation in the car and also the awkwardness between these two characters…
@@brianng8350 You know that feeling when you've been focusing on something too long and you just need to look out a window or at a distance to get your perspective back? That's the feeling I had.
Leaving the car is the emotional tension releasing, and you don't want that to happen casually. Kol vomits, Ebony gets picked up, Ebony confesses that she didn't get into NIDA,...these are the moments when we exit the car. The car is the only safe place where their relationship can exist. It's a refuge from the real world and everything that torments Nikolas. Cutting away would make it feel breezy and less important.
YOUR PLACE OR MINE.........watched ....it was great !!.....way better then......Somebody I Used To Know" !!
Why are all these LGBTQ+ movies a young person (in highschool/ barely 18) meeting this really older person who teaches the younger person how to live in their truth by falling in love with them. There is also heavy make out/sex scenes. Only for the older person to leave the younger person heartbroken at the end of the movie. Another example movie is " Blue is the warmest colour "
My beautiful boy. 🥹
Weekend is better. More realistic.
Weekend is better, is true.
Oh not that Tom Green
Totally different guy, Thom Green with an H!
Good God! I’ve never heard a more clueless review of a movie. The whole point of the movie was to show the poignancy and bittersweet picture of first love. Apparently, these two have never had that experience before. Couple that with the isolation of growing up queer and this picture could not have been more accurately portrayed. Sorry guys, you totally missed it on this review!
Well we're glad you enjoyed this movie more than we did. And given that we've both been married to our spouses for over 25 years, yes, we know what it's like to be in love! But we appreciate you watching.
@@BreakfastAllDay Well if your spouses were indeed your first love I apologize for the insensitivity. As I can’t speak for most people, I can say the first time I fell in love it was tremendously bittersweet and more similar to how this movie played out. Congrats on your marriage.
2nd half wasn’t engaging
