REALIZE the Strength & Conditioning it TOOK to DO this Dance Masterpiece! Rising from the FLOOR without using hands, & ONLY (Inner) Leg Muscle! We witness the Seemingly IMPOSSIBLE here in This FABULOUS CLIP!
They don't make dancers like this anymore. Such awesome dancers. I hurt just watching them do those splits. Thank you for enriching our lives Nicholas brothers. RIP, and many happy days dancing in Heaven.
The whole dance sequence is unreal but the highlight are those leaping splits coming down the steps. Not only is it amazing it also looks dangerous. They were supermen.
Gregory Hines also asserted that if they ever did a biopic about the brothers, they'd need CGI to recreate this number, because there's no one alive who could perform it.
The splits alone for men show just how amazing these men were. Ahead of their time. Who better than the Hines brothers to interview about legendary dancers like the Nicholas Brothers. Gregory Hines one of my favorite modern day tap dancers may he and the Nicholas Brothers rest in peace. A real class act of talent we don't see today, what a shame.
Amazing what the human body can deliver when you least expect it. These guys were simply head and shoulders above us normals. And they made it look so effortless. Thank the lord for film. We are all just a little bit better for witnessing these great artists.
AMAZING 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🔥🔥🔥 They're many greats out there, but no one comes close to the Nicholas Brothers! I can watch this routine over and over again. They danced their way here to Earth, and right back into heaven. Rest in Peace, Nicholas Brothers. We love and appreciate your creative design of dance 🕺🏿🕺🏿
My heart stops every time I see stormy weather. I had the honor of attending a performance of tap giants in San Francisco years ago. The Nicholas Brothers were host of the event. I will never ever forget them.
Fayard with his hands gets me every time! I have to watch just to see him. Then I have to watch to see just Harold. Then I have to watch to realize what I saw was so magical. They were something super special!
These two brothers were stunning to watch. I've never seen dancing made to look so easy, yet it is difficult to do. It's a beautiful sight to behold. I love Stormy Weather, one my favorite movies.
Poetry in motion, pure class, unbelievable takent, doing the physically impossible in full evening dress clothes. RIP Nicholas Brothers & Gregory Hines.
Fayard and Harold Nicholas are absolute perfection in dance. Words cannot adequately convey how superb this dance sequence is. These gentlemen were decades ahead of their time and should have received far more recognition during an era where all great African American performers struggled for exposure of any kind. The Nicholas Brothers rightfully deserve the grace that Fred Astaire bestowed upon them, deeming this number from "Stormy Weather" as "the greatest musical number ever performed on film." Gregory and Maurice Hines were among the next wonderful incarnation of dancers borne by this marvelous duo, Bojangles Robinson and others of this era. Please share this performance with everyone who loves athleticism, artistry and entertainment, of any kind. Thank you so much for sharing.
Something else I notice in this number is how the band musicians don't even flinch when the brothers are leaping around on the stands and throwing their legs around... It just speaks on one level to their respective professionalism as musicians and the degree of trust they had in the dancers to fully be aware of the people around them.
I have watched this video hundreds of times....I studied tap/ballet in my youth.....never any good...but appreciate masters of the art form.......there is a book out there about their lives....tragic but also noble.....worth finding.....did the OSCARS even give them recognition???? they should......do NOT let this art and the artists disappear from our foundation of freedom and art ......they achieved greatness despite the prejudice in this country.....twice the difficulty that white artist have......their talent and nobility should NOT be forgotten
SO true! When I saw the Nicholas Brothers do the splits and come straight up from the floor without using their hands: NO TOUCHING THE FLOOR OR SLOWING PACE AT ALL, I knew they were great athletes with core strength and muscles in thighs/butt. Wow.
I always like to hear one great entertainer (Hines) explain & comment on the "legends" of their art. Hines does an extremely good job of explaining how great the Nicholas Brothers were.
Paul B. You are so right. I had known the Nicholas Brothers for yeas, and loved their every move. But to have two other fine dancers like the Hines brothers explain their own appreciation granted me an entirely new, and higher, understanding of what had been right before my eyes all that time. Only one example: "Then they come back down into the splits; then they come back up without using their hands". Without using their hands: I''d seen that many times before, of course, but only then did I realize what a miraculous feat it was. And the brothers did it again and again. Thanks for your comment, Paul B, and even more thanks to Igart1 for this important postl
The Nicholas Brothers are the greatest tap dancers team with acrobatics and class ; pure finesse, magnificent and spectacular ; they didn’t get their “ just due “ , all because of the color of their skin. That God we have a little “ piece “ of history, to see how incredible these brothers are, but that’s still not enough!
It is sad, but trust me when I say this, white people admired them and knew they were talented (I am white). I wish that things could have been different back them, such an ugly time for people of color.
They were magnificent!! Though they were way before my time, isn't it great that we can still enjoy them. I did see Gregory Hines on Broadway when I was younger and he was outstanding and gone too soon. RIP guys.
One of my favorite movies with Gregory Hines is Tap....worth watching for the dancing. There is a scene in it where all of the great Tap dancers are dancing and Harold Nicholas is in it.

BEST DANCE I HAVE EVER SEEN. PERIOD ...THANK YOU BOYS.. .
I so miss him. Some nights I just spend two or three hours pulling up everything I can find to watch Gregory Hines dance. Also, I loved his voice and wish he had done even one 'standards' album. Other than "There's Nothing Better Than Love" with Luther and "Don’t Get Around Much Anymore" from Sophisticated Ladies, there are few videos/recordings to capture the magic of his voice. Such a multi talented, humble man.
Oh, my crouch!!!! Every time I see the dance sequence of them splitting down the stairs, they engulfed me in every moment of it. They will be always be the Fabulous Nicholas Brothers. 😳😨😱😵👍😄
The Nicholas brothers have no equal they are without question the greatest dance duo that ever lived R.I.P. to the G.O.A.T.S. Fayard and Harold Nicholas
I don't think their will ever be anyone to fill these brothers shoes,They GOT DOWN!!! I L💕💕E the way they dance together,Their movies are priceless 💕❤️💕
I was never interested in dance but could appreciate skill. I watched White Knights because I heard an orchelstral arrangement of Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in Cm. I enjoyed the movie and appreciated the great skill shown by both Gregory Hines and Michael Baryshnikov. Decades passed and my attitude towards dance remained about the same. Then I saw the Nicholas Brothers' Jumpin Jive Routine. Of course I appreciated the the skill but there was so much more. It was awe and it still is. Others can come and go. Others can be great talents in their own rights but I do not believe that any will ever surpass the Nicholas brothers, the best of all, ever.
The Nicholas Brothers were suchgreat dancers and what class. Wow its hard to believe what you was seening them doing was real. But it was . Oh my. How did they jump over each other and into the splits on steps . I have never seen dancing like that. They were GREAT!!!
There is a difference between rehearsing and doing a scene in one take. You need to rehearse, but to do a scene in one cut, it takes one heck of a talented person/persons to do that and the Nicholas Brothers were just that.
And I thought all these years that Fredastaire and Ginger Rodgers was the greatest. These gentlemen wrote the book on dance. They were Phenomenal. The Greatest of all times.
Sadly, due to selective racism in the industry, they never got the same screen time as white performers. Notice they never let them dance with white performers in their movies because they sure as hell did not want to be shown up.
When Fayard Nicholas said it wasn't rehearsed, they knew in their mind what to do. Me: Sir, that's class act and pure talent. Ya'll will never be duplicated
Just the leaps up onto various platforms is impressive in itself, but then over and over again, and no trace of tired, but looking even more joyful and energized as they go along.❤
I have been a dance, teacher, and a dance, professional for many years. Besides the incredible dancing of the Nicholas brothers, Fred Astaire, Jim, Kelly, etc. their movies were made with a limited amount of edits. Their bodies are always shown in full figure such a joy and beautiful to watch. Today it is impossible to watch dance with all of the choppiness and multiple edits.
The Nicholas Brothers were and will be the very best dancers that the whole entire wide world will ever see. They are Numero Uno for a reason.
The Nicholas Brothers. Stormy Weather came out so long ago and the Nicholas Brothers amaze me every time I see them dance.

They were Pure Genius when they danced! I miss Gregory Hines... a talented actor and dancer as well.
The Nicholas brothers are amazing athletes and dancers. They are the best dancers I've ever seen, no one comes even close.
That’s impossible! Greatest dance performance I’ve ever seen. Speechless
I get worn out and my legs HURT watching these LEGENDS do their thing.
The whole dance sequence is unreal but the highlight are those leaping splits coming down the steps. Not only is it amazing it also looks dangerous. They were supermen.
They were just magnificent; that’s all!!.
I highly agree. Do splits repeatedly on the stairs would break everyone's legs! I'll never know how they did that.
@@deborahmccoy3837 Agreed, Magnificent Supermen!
The Nicolas brothers were ahead of their time! Nobody could copy them today!
For sure! These two were amazing!
Gregory Hines also asserted that if they ever did a biopic about the brothers, they'd need CGI to recreate this number, because there's no one alive who could perform it.
They did this routine in one take. ONE TAKE!!!
One take but rehearsed...
They're absolutely right. Nobody has ever, or ever will, perform dance like the Nicholas Brothers. They were phenomenal!
They never even panted!!! They were made for this!!! RIP to the greatest dancers to ever live!!!
All this with no professional dance lessons; just “ Raw” Talent; Fayard taught Harold ; truly amazing.
I tried doing this with zero skill but equal intensity and almost passed out within a minute
Yes sir!
Their bodies had to be conditioned by dancing and rehearsing. But one take? NO way...
Fun fact if you look up Nicholas bros documentary Fayard said he taught himself how to performance
I love Gregory Hines, his hard work in dance. What a legacy. He was the product of the great Nicholas Bros.
I had the good fortune of visiting with Fayard on several occasions in the mid-70’s... such a humble and beautiful man.
I think even Gregory Hines is at a loss for words. All he can say is "beautiful."
How did they keep from splitting their pants?
.....And not “ one professional dance lesson; truly amazing and spectacular!!!
George Penton : just true “ Raw “ Talent; that’s all!!!.
Absolutely, they are tap dance treasures. They are legendary in the dancing world of all types. 👍
Amazing what the human body can deliver when you least expect it. These guys were simply head and shoulders above us normals. And they made it look so effortless. Thank the lord for film. We are all just a little bit better for witnessing these great artists.

Pure and raw talent. RIP NB. RIP Gregory Hines
Nope, that’s refined to it purest form of talent.
My hero's of dance. RIP Nickolas Bros. And Gregory Hines. Thank you.

david lindsey I have to do the same thing too. I love Fayard’s hands, and I just love how Harold moves. They are in a class of their own.
The speed, athleticism, timing and grace! wow!
The Nicholas Brothers are mind bending and mind boggling!! They truly defy gravity!
These two brothers were stunning to watch. I've never seen dancing made to look so easy, yet it is difficult to do. It's a beautiful sight to behold. I love Stormy Weather, one my favorite movies.
I could watch the Nicholas brothers forever
Poetry in motion, pure class, unbelievable takent, doing the physically impossible in full evening dress clothes. RIP Nicholas Brothers & Gregory Hines.
Heart stopping moves! Exhilarating! I never tire of watching these two!

I love their bows: so clean and professional, absolutely synchronized.

They are true poetry in motion. A beautiful art form. None better❤️

Well, one sax player ducked a little when Fayard swung a leg over him, but basically you're right.
They cross the line from great to supernatural--and really special to hear Gregory Hines commentary!
The way Fayard glides up from that last split gets me every time. Its beautiful.

All hands down & up on that comment. 🙌👍😄

Pure unadulterated poetry in motion! Blessings!💜
This is fantastic commentary by HInes. Even guys like him are simply stunned by this routine.

Asking me to choose between Harold and Fayard is like asking me to choose between my sons. In a word, impossible!
And please dont forget that great piece of music. It so complemented the synchronized tap. They were as one.
Yes, that band was amazing also!
The Nicholas brothers are the G.O.A.T. still in 2021.
I love this dance, I wince every time I see them on the stairs. So smooth. Thanks for posting.
Breathtaking stunning astounding astonishing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤩 Unmatchable....God given raw talent and human developed to Perfection 😍🥰😘🙏🏼🙏🏼

Beautifully talented! Boy they don't make them like that anymore.Classy. Now those were REAL men back in the day!
Gravity is a fundamental force of nature for most of us, for the Nicholas Brothers it only made polite suggestions.
Poetry in motion!!!!!!!!!! RIP Gregory Hines!! 👍👏

Their routine in "Down Argentine Way" while not as celebrated as "Stormy Weather" I feel is just as good.
Absolutely the best of all time! No one will ever be better. God bless you wherever you are.
There can never be another like the Nicholas Bothers, their splits were fantastic, like their hands & feet..
This dance number still makes my heart race, no matter how many times I have seen it. Nothing like
And they NEVER rehearsed the routine!!! Absolutely AMAZING!!!
No. They didnt rehearse the splits on the staircase.

Somebody said that these guys "escaped gravity." Yeah, that's the right terminology "escaped gravity" is exactly what they did....do.
Gravity is fake, this is not!
I showed this dance routine to my 17 year old cousin and she thought it had to be cgi or some other special effects.
This scene has so much power that each time I see I can't control my respiration.
