This is the last piece I learned when I was a six (6) year old little boy. And then I never played the piano again. Now I just turned seventy-six (76), after being a surgeon for the last forty-eight (48)
years, and I have decided to start playing the piano again. I think that I will start with this song. Wish me luck. And I want to thank you Kenneth Glendon Brown for posting this lovely piece of music, and also including the score. Thank you, Dr. George M. Whitehead

Am I too ambitious to try this piece? Yes. Will I be able to play it? Well, I cannot sight read such a piece at my present level of playing, yet this performance encourages me to put it on my 'to do list'.

I thought it was F. Liszt who had arranged it for solo piano.

There is indeed an arrangement by Liszt! This is the somewhat simpler arrangement done by August Horn. Both are available on IMSLP!

Not a fan of this interpretation. Way too much and too long pedal, see the pedal signs in the sheet. Sounds like there is extra reverb on the E-Piano too.
The beginning is staccatissimo and not legato.
This is too much rubato for me and it doesnt feel like the right tempo. Too much arpeggio where it isnt stated.
And the appoggiatura arent played at all.
This is a serenade, a song after all. This piece needs some precision. Just like most romantic pieces, this will get stuck in a swamp of muddy emotions if played to loosely.

Hi JM C, thanks for sharing your thoughts! True, I do deviate from the score a bit in this recording in the ways that you've observed. Some of those deviations actually bother me as well, when I listen to it now. But I do disagree about the rubato - I think my playing here is actually a bit too stiff, and the phrases not quite "shaped" enough. In any case, when I listen to my playing here I do think that I could probably render the piece both more clearly, more faithfully, and also more musically expressive. Perhaps I will create another recording for my channel someday - if I do create another video of the piece I hope you will share thoughts on that one as well!
