Beautiful collection. Is this the same way you take care of Vandas? What happens when an orchid sheds all the leaves and you stay with only the roots? Help please. I have mine in coconut fiber.

I have started a collection of species. I'm growing them in baskets with moss.I do have a question. if they are in baskets with moss and the roots have already gown onto the outside of the basket. Will I need to change the moss.

fabulous phal species , i have a few of them and i keep mine in coconut husk , I noticed you have yours in sphagnum moss , How do you keep their roots from rotting out? I seem to have that problem with sphagnum moss and i would like to learn that trick. thanks so much!!!

It's easy to grow them in moss, you have to let them dry out.

I have thought about starting a collection of species. To me the Phalaenopsis species is lke the African violet family to the orchid world. and I do love fragrant orchids.

Great collection, but why are all leaves so lumpy? The second question which I would like to ask is why are orchids put in spagnummos? ;-))

Eventually the moss will rot, becoming VERY acidic, killing the roots. When it begins to break down, it does so rapidly. If the plants have a big root system, you can start picking it out and grow it bare root (that's sort of what I do with some cattleyas) .as the root system gets taking off, I start picking out media that is easily removed and then the plant just ends up with more space and a massive amount of roots. But I don't know if you have the humidity to grow phals bare root. If the moss starts falling out gradually as it breaks down, it might be ok, but I'd pick out as much as you can when its time and then fill the basket in with stuff that doesn't break down like styrofoam peanuts to hold a bit of moisture but that won't break down. I think that's a hard way to grow phals though. They do great in coir/Perlite which is really easy to repot with. You just have to make sure you wash the coir to get the tds down.
