Orchid Identification: The 5 Most Common Orchids for Beginners

- When you first start your journey into the orchid world, the names and many types of orchids become rapidly overwhelming. Orchid identification isn’t hard to understand, and once you do, you’ll find it a lot easier to distinguish the basic growth patterns and can provide better orchid care for each species.
In this video you’ll learn:
How knowing what each genus is will help you
How to identify each orchid (the common ones)
How to correctly know a genus and species
In this video, you won’t learn how to care for each orchid.
Care guides would require four to six pages of written instructions for each genus and this video would soon become way too large.
Why learn what genus and species an orchid is? What benefit can you get from that? When you learn to identify the most common orchids and how they are different from each other, your understanding of how to care for them will drastically change.
The benefit of proper orchid care is not only for your orchid: your wallet will thank you too. Many times, greenhouses and floral shops will have non-flowering plants with no ID tags on them for a substantive monetary discount-quite a big sale.
Since these orchids are not in blossom, they’re harder to sell. If they don’t sell, they’ll have to provide another year’s care for them, which means less profit for the greenhouse.
If you can identify the plant without the flower in blossom, you’ll save a bundle of money and be able to care for your orchid better.
When orchids are in full bloom, they have used up most of their energy. Any new environmental change that will cost them energy is detrimental to their health.
Let’s take a look at the most commonly sold orchids:
Phalaenopsis,
Cattleya,
Dendrobiums,
Oncidiums,
and Paphiopedilums,
because they will be the ones without the proper ID tag. Sometimes, the name of the grower is replaced by the genus of the orchid, so most new orchid hobbyists won’t know which orchid they have.

Thats really helpfull, thanks!
Thank you, Aditya! Your comment means a lot to me. :)
In my country we have an orchid nursery (organised and created by the Taiwanese Government as a gift to our country), and they grow (and sell) the top four orchids you have mentioned, except for the Paphiopedilums, which makes sense to me. I really wish sometimes, they had a wider variety - but hey! We should be grateful for what we have been given. They do have quite an extensive nursery of different flowers to choose from which is a plus. Again thanks for your knowledge and commitment.
Wow! That would be amazing to see. I think the world needs more places like that. :) Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate it.
New subscriber. Finally. I can identify my orchid. Phalaenopsis. 😊👍Thank you for sharing. 💚🥀🌱

Hi Chandimal Manoj, Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment. I appreciate it!
A gem of a video for beginners like me. Thanks a lot.
I would appreciate if you can tell me what type of orchid is the Rhyncostylis/Foxtail variety.
Thanks again.
Hi Atanu, I don't have a foxtail orchid, so I can't make a video about them. I wish I had one... It's on my wish list along with vandas. I have a pinterst page though with lots of Rhycostylis and pictures of their growth. They are gorgeous orchids and worth every dollar. If you go to pinterst for Orchideria and look at the list of boards, look for the one with the foxtail.
@@Orchideria Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your experiences. I will definitely try your Pinterest link. Actually I am in the process of re potting 5 Foxtail orchids from a random collection. Since I don't know of what variety it is, I just wanted to collect some info about it.
Thank you.
That blue orchid is absolutely stunning
👍👍
your blue orchid is stunning!! Is that a natural color, or artificially colored? If it's real, where did you get it?
Hi Maxine! Unfortuneately, the orchid is not natural. Blue dye is injected in the stem as soon as the buds form. When it reblooms next year, it will be white. I actually have a video coming out about the blue orchid. I think it will come out this Saturday, but I have to double check on the date. Sometimes you can buy them at local grocery stores. Thanks for your comment!
Do you use the pine cones as plotting medium
I don't. I just have them for decoration
👋howdy 🤠
I just come from working at a property that had probably over 100 orchids laying around on the ground that had grafted to the ground. I didn’t realize what they were the first week however definitely picked up on it by week two. Because they’re not in the right medium they haven’t thrived. They just survived over time grafted to old mulch and soil. Long story short I now have probably 125 orchids now but don’t know what any of them are. They came from a beautiful property that had been neglected unfortunately. Hopefully I saved them with new sphagnum and bark.
Hi Loaded Fun, That is so amazing! I wish you all the best with them.
I'm curious, how are your Orchids doing since you changed their medium?
@@alicesmith6750 thank you for asking! Over the year I had given them out to friends and family. It had become quite a mission to just keep them alive on my lanai here in Florida. Although I did keep a few vanda’s for myself .
Beautiful information, to be culturally correct I do believe it is Native American, or American Indian. Well wishes!
Thanks!
i thought theres only one type of orchid.😅but i find and took four different orchid from the wild in a mountain.so i would like to know more about them
Hi Nun Hlua, Thank you for the comment. There are so many types of orchids, and it's amazing to learn about each one. Sometimes it's a good idea to find a group of orchid enthusiasts around your area and ask their advice because they should know what orchids live in your area and how to care for them. They would know better than I will :) since each environment is different.
What is the difference between Odontocidium and oncidium or is it the same?
Hi EE, They are almost the same but have slight differences. The ondontocidium is a cross between an oncidium and a ondontoglossum.
Aerial are fine even when they're silvery in color?
The silvery color is still healthy, just indicates it's close to watering time. Brown roots are the problem.
Vanda?
I need help!! I have an orchid and I cannot understand what type it is. It matches with the description of a Dandobium but im not sure . It has relatively long stems and multiple flowers grow out of one stems.
Looks almost tlike a bamboo tree
Hi Bhoomi, Thanks for watching and for finding me on Instagram, too. When it blooms, can you send me a picture on Instagram? That way I can look up the name for you.
@@Orchideria I definitely will do that. Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
I would have gotten better grades if she was my teacher!
Thanks! 😊
why they gave orchid moth t his name is not to comun
