      I so appreciate a DD that will spot and screen because it really increases the chances of a team win. I've played DDs like this and if your true to your team instead of looking for whales it hurts your personal score but helps the team in spades. I cant stand when a DD holds back or abandons an entire flank leaving everyone else the only options to not push or eat torps to push for position.

    • @DevSolar
      @DevSolar 3 года назад +1

      That is highly situational. Your ship, your build, team support, enemy ships' deployment, map, battle mode, your playstyle. There are no hard & fast rules here. The Sailing Robin does an excellent running commentary of his thought processes. But generally speaking, you need to look over your own shoulder while playing, and constantly take note what works, what doesn't, and why.
      It is not easy. To this day I don't really understand why I play the Yorck and the Roon rather well, but utterly suck in the Hipper. I like playing the Gneisenau WAY more aggressively than I should be able to get away with, but somehow I make it work -- but I can't get the same effect on a Tirpitz. You never stop learning.

    • @KarthikVishwamitra
      @KarthikVishwamitra 3 года назад +2

      A general rule of thumb I (56% WR player) follow for BB positioning is this: The closest spotted enemy threat should be within +/- 1-2 km of my concealment range.
      The important words here are "spotted" and "threat". An unspotted DD 9 km away from your 14 km concealment BB can certainly be a threat, but if you know their general location you can be mostly safe from them. The ships that are spotted and that you're shooting at will be behind their DD, aka the ideal 12-16 km range.
      And of course a ship that's 5 km away from you isn't a threat if they're on the other side of a tall island.
      Every rule has its exceptions though. There can be unspotted threats that can kill you very quickly. Think of an island-camping DM or Worcester while you're being spotted by that DD 9 km away. Your options here are 1) move outside of that cruiser's range (passive play that's valid in the early game); 2) move closer to the island so their shells can't arc over (very risky especially with a DD lurking, but sometimes necessary); or 3) change your position relative to the island so they can't shoot over the taller part of the island, or move such that in order to shoot you the cruiser would be spotted by your teammates on the other side of the island (often the best but hardest to execute option).

    • @DevSolar
      @DevSolar 3 года назад +2

      @@KarthikVishwamitra See, that rule of thumb -- which obviously works well enough for you -- would be much too passive in my book. My rule of thumb in early play is "all ahead full until you find an island to work with". Whether that is the nearest one, or some island even further ahead, depends on what ships get spotted where en route.
      The island gives you cover from torpedoes from that side, and an opportunity to "go dark" if needed. It can also reduce the amount of incoming fire.
      From there on, I attempt to manage the amount of fire I can lay down vs. the amount of fire I can take, with an eye on whether my position is still "current", i.e. whether I should put on more pressure. Falling back is very seldom an option, because you'd be leaving partial cover and expose yourself fully to whatever threats there are. It is usually best to dig in and sell yourself dearly.
      I don't consider enemy DDs as special threats. Unless my team decides to lemming off to the other side -- which sometimes happens and usually cannot be helped once you commited yourself in a BB -- I rely on my forward positioning enabling allied cruisers and DDs to engage themselves. Combined with my own firepower and positioning, that should deter all but the most determined YOLO attacks.
      This approach usually sees me in secondary range to most enemies I engage. Much closer than what you are suggesting, because that is approprate for the type of ships I prefer (German tree), and my captain builds. Works for me about as well as your approach for you (56%+). That is why I said "it depends" (on too many factors to come up with ONE set of guidelines).

    • @KarthikVishwamitra
      @KarthikVishwamitra 3 года назад

      @@DevSolar You're right, different BB's require different playstyles. I made that rule based on my experience in the American, British, and Japanese BB's. I should have specified that although this rule _works_ for all BB's, it may not be optimal for the tankier German or Russian BB's.
      I've found that kind of playstyle works wonderfully for SinOP (which is as far as I am up the Russian line). The main problem that can arise from that playstyle is CV's. Sitting stationary next to an island is a death sentence if the enemy has a competent CV player. As it often is, the real answer is "it depends".
      The playstyle I outlined _works_ for any BB. I have 56% WR in my Montana that way and I would probably have something similar if I played SinOP the same way. However, 56% is low for that ship (cause it's OP lol), and by playing more aggressive I currently have ~60% WR in it. But sometimes a match will force you to play SinOP like a Montana or vice versa. It depends.

    • @DevSolar
      @DevSolar 3 года назад

      @@KarthikVishwamitra Working with an island != sitting stationary next to it. ;-) Also, by playing forward like that, I usually enjoy the company of cruisers and the like.

    thanks for this video, gives me something new to consider. as a permanently mediocre player I've had too many games just as you described. Either top ranked farming damage at the back, while losing, or low ranked from a yolo charge. On the whole I tend to be far too aggressive in every ship I play except for the Thunderer, where I always am too passive. your explanation of how to balance them is good food for thought.
    if you die early, you were too aggressive, if you end the match with little damage received and an L you were too passive. good rules of thumb. hopefully that gets my winning % up. tired of losing. 2500+ matches and a sub .500 winning percentage is frustrating.

I'll tank 3/4 mil in damage, normally go straight to dreadnaught damage recieved, and then get sunk 3-4 seconds before the end of the match.

    Thanks PQ for taking "one for the team". Being able to admit fault is a hard concept to grasp, everyone is guilty of at some point.
    Here's me HOPING that the current "meta" is going bye-bye. For now, since it's so discouraging to be pummeled so often from so many sources, it's very difficult for "teamwork" to make a win work when it's more often punished than not. Total "steamrolls" are far more common now than in recent memory, while more balanced games seem quite rare! It's perfectly natural to expect most players to "get back" and stay there. While the most "verbal" players completely TRASH the entire team in frustration. Frustration is part of ANY game that's worth playing, iMHO, it's all a matter of degree. You wont make the next game better by being a d-bag about it, nor will it help any player get better. Most players seem to just play MORE passive in the next match.
    This is just a game, after all. "Bravery" doesnt foster a win, when you're the only player who is "Brave". While working as a TEAM will always bring better results, seems like WG has a real problem with fostering any kind of TEAM play. When it's easier to be TOXIC than to play as a TEAM, it's bound to foster greater TOXIC behavior. AGAIN IMHO!

    One issue is the maps are so small and the point system such that helping your team really hurts your personal total because the games end really fast once your team starts to roll the other team. Example: you help your DDs get rid of enemy DDs and your team rolls the other team because of the DD advantage while other players are reaping points on larger ships and the game ends before you can really make up the lost time.

      There's another video made for that. It's called "Some Games Are Lost No Matter What You Do
      "

    Like that one time I got 170k damage, 0 kills using Iowa because I was sitting at the back of the map playing sniper I ended up being the last one alive on my team with 4 low hp battleships and died to em... Lol

    battleship full HP at the backline with no kills, farming damage all game scoring over you as the radar cruiser killing several DDs and he believes he did everything right

    You contributed to the loss, but your feckless DDs actually lost the game.
    Still a fair point though.

    already frustrated at a 6 game losing streak? I'd call that a good day if I only lose 6 in a row.

    Seriously, if the choices is to push in, in a double CV game and get harassed by them entire match for a chance at winning .... or.... sit beside a CV entire match and just farm damage, no CV harassment at all and loose .... I take the loss every day in the week and twice on Friday (because then im drunk A-F).
    I play games to enjoy myself and there is no enjoyment at all to play in CV games, so much more enjoyment in loosing in this case, and im far from the only one that feels like this. This could have been a great game, but then WG put CVs into the mix and haven't been able to balance them in 6 years......

    Fear and hatred of carriers made you lose this game. Right.

  • @Edi_J
    @Edi_J 3 года назад +1

    You're too harsh to yourself. Yes, you could do more, but it was the other 11 people who died like flies - you would have to CARRY them to win anyway.
    And the real reason of the result is difference in carriers play, not battleships. Those guys with 200-300xp just suicided, and you would have to win the game FOR them. Pepsi was straight suicidal, and your presence a few km closer and "tanking" certainly would not save her, because enemy BB would still shoot a broadside Peps, not you.
    Also, enemy team had two divisions (2+3) "in the field" while your team had only lonely Dunk teamed with a weakly playing CV.
    Your 100k was perfectly fine to "carry your weight", you just did not carry the whole team. Is it your "fault"? ;)
    This game is good example of "how not to carry", but not exactly a showcase of bad play. Sitting in your Fuso and sniping in T6 for 100k would still give you WR way over 50%... which most of "playerbase" can only dream of.

    This was really hard to listen to, and I think was not a realistic evaluation of the game. I almost unsubbed I was so offended by the me, me, me theme. That's not something I hear from you in general, and I usually find your channel quite delightful to watch.
