  • Just under a year after dropping his Grammy Award-winning album, King's Disease, with Hit-Boy...Nas returns with the sequel, King's Disease II. The first album caught a lot of people, including die-hard Nas fans, by surprise. Nas's Achilles heel, for a lot of folks, has always been his poor choice of beats so seeing him link up with someone like Hit-Boy was a positive for some, while others were a bit taken aback by the style of production he was given. Either way it was definitely something that was different for Nas and it was surprising to see these two link up again. So how did this sequel hold up? Was it better than the first? Was the production not what you wanted to hear from Nas? Listen to the fellas discuss it and then leave your thoughts in the comment section!

    Y’all are buggin about the beat on Death Row East. Hit Boy got in his BAG and studied Johnny J production for that one and that is exactly how it sounds and what I’m reminded of when I hear it. Takes you back to that era when you hear it and it was what was needed for Nas to journey down that path to 1996. 10/10 Song.

    Man, this summer has been crazy for rap listeners. We got King's Disease 2 by Nas and Hit Boy, Bo Jackson by Boldy James and Alchemist, and A Martyr's Reward by Ka all in about a 2-3 week space. And Benny dropped a light EP too. My summer done got fucked up.
    Edit: Just remembered that Isaiah Rashad dropped as well and Westside dropping too.... Damn
    Edit 2: On top of all this, Lupe is supposed to drop his 'illmatic' soon (Good. Lord.) and Vince dropped a few weeks back too.
    Edit 3: FML thanks guys for reminding me of all the other projects we got over the summer as well. Mach-Hommy, Pink Siifu, Dave East, MIKE, Ransom, Rome Streetz, Etc. Etc. This summer has been arguably one of the best in a while. I'm done updating this since it feels like there's always a project I'm missing that in any other year would be a highlight of the summer.

Untitled was the perspective of a MAN who had seen the world and gave some social commentary and history on the n word and life in America. His flow and lyrics were as sharp as ever. The production was mature and the live instrumentation complimented the tone of the album and his style. Excellent album that isn’t mentioned enough. Salute to you for pointing that out. • @DaffyDuck007
      @DaffyDuck007 3 года назад

      @HipHopTalk Eminem has not had a great album since Recovery. Jay-Z is the 1b to Nas' 1a, but he hasn't been more consistent than Nas in almost two decades. 4:44 was great, Magna Carta was okay, and Watch the Throne was very good, but his last classic album was American Gangster. Kanye has not been good since Watch the Throne, and Life is Good came out after that album, so yes, Nas with LIG, Kings Disease 1 and 2 has been far more consistent than Ye who has only had some joints on ye and The Life of Pablo in the last decade. Yeezus was TRASH, Jesus Is King was meh (which we can wash with NASIR), and Donda is overly long, very boring and lyrically weak.

    • @DaffyDuck007
      @DaffyDuck007 3 года назад

      @HipHopTalk I disagree about Jay, but I am halfway with you on Em. The Eminem Show was his last classic, and he has forgotten how to write SONGS since the MMLP2, which should have never been called that IMO because it was far inferior.
      I can't get with you on Donda and Yeezus though. Ye was good but short, and Pablo was good, but nothing great in my opinion. Nas may not chart as much as Ye, Em, and Jay, but much of that comes down to marketing dollars and not talent. Just as an example, Nas' budget for Hip Hop is Dead was $3mil, while his boss Jay-Z spent $15mil on Kingdom Come, and even though it did great numbers (2 mil during the Snap Era), the album was rightly panned by the heads.

    Great content guys! Just discovered y'all and Subbed. Now my 2 cents on Death Row East Song! When i saw the name of the track ,my mind went to a mixture of East & west beats combined and upon listening i see that is what HitBoy did with the beat. It had both elements fused together.
    I see why some people got confused about that. I grew up in Nigeria, been a Nas fan since 92. This album brought a lot of elements from the 90s and mixed it with the new. They did the impossible with this. Count me in, was straight up Native tongues sound. Cheers!

The acclaim this album is getting was unexpected for me, just like this album dropping the way it did was unexpected but I suppose Nas being a legacy artist can do that now. What's more its even outdoing its predecessor critically and commercially. Pretty satisfying how much people still care about Nas' position this long in his career. What beats did Nas used to rap over that people always to critiqued his selection?? All of Illmatic, all of Life is Good, most of ITT, “Made You Look”, “Got Yourself a Gun”, “Hate Me Now”... I’m sure he has some duds, I just remember mostly great and/or minimalistic beats but not much “terrible” beats.

    • @gos2501
      @gos2501 3 года назад

      I think they mean beats that dont really suit nas' style causr he's mostly known for either dark/gritty or soulfoul production so when a song like zone out from God's son comes on it doesn't like nas or with summer on smash from life is good it could also be that nas was experimenting with beats and some of them either were bad to others or lackluster

    • @sanantoballa4834
      @sanantoballa4834 3 года назад +1

      I always felt Nas picked beats based off the content he was going for. For example, Ether isn’t a “great beat” but honestly that beat perfectly fits the mood of the diss track. He has never been a terrible beat picker but I understand why some don’t like his choices. If I was him I would just choose beats that are the cream of the crop and create around them. But he has stated that’s not how he chooses beats.

    My only gripe with this review is it seemed like y’all spent way too much time on the production aspect of it. Why is it that Nas gets the most critique on his production? Rather good or bad. It never fails to see people putting more emphasis on the production than anything else when it comes to a Nas album. That narrative of him always having bad beats is overblown like hell and it seemed like that’s why this review was more so about the beats than Nas

      Cause we already know what Nas brings rapping wise. The rapping is always gonna be there and he is almost an undisputed top 5 rapper of all time. At this point, even Nas has put a focus on, making a great body of work and enjoyable music. This isn't to say everything pre-KD1 was not enjoyable. @TheRealLeonardWashington 3 года назад +5

      @@Christian-eq6pq but that’s what it comes off as. The overdriven focus on the production being so good comes off as if it’s a surprise for a Nas album. Nas has done this before multiple times over as far as finding beats that give us the full capacity of what he’s been giving us since 94. True he’s had misses but I never was one to believe that Nas was this horrible beat picker. Lost tapes 1 is a prime example of this. The production on that project was fire

    On Death Row East, I was so caught up in the story itself that I didn’t really catch a lot of the beat.

    Pretty sure somebody already pointed this out, but Hit said on either IG or Twitter he was tryna make something Johnny J (RIP) would've made for Pac back in '96 with the production for Death Row East

    Honestly, Kanye can keep his Donda with all the antics and stupid delay tactics.. I'm good with this one.. Album of the year Nas, I'm so so happy that my fav rapper is shining in his prime

    Pac rapped over a TON of garbage beats. Eminem rapped over a lot of his own beats, which were/are trash. Kendrick's TPAB was praised to the heavens for very similar music to what Nas had already done on Untitled. The only cats that seem to consistently rap over amazing production seem to be Rick Ross and Jay Z in his prime. The "Nas picks subpar beats" argument died with Hip Hop is Dead.

      @@mr.getitdone6543 He sure did. Almost all of his first two albums, about a third of All Eyez On Me and about a third of the beats on Don Kiluminati. Especially if we're going off the standard of Nas criticisms about beat selection.

      @@DaffyDuck007 ok I give you the first 2 albums.. but once he gained access to better/elite production(Easy Mo Bee, Johnny J, Daz, Dre etc) I'd have to disagree with All Eyez On Me having 1/3 of its beat being garbage. Yeah there was a few but not a third(to me)..
      ..Especially Makaveli, I don't think any beat on the Makaveli album is garbage. And I'm not somebody who thinks the saying that Nas beats are garbage is true.. I actually don't understand why ppl say it.. later on in his career as music changed "maybe" they were sub par as opposed to what he rapped to earlier in his career but I still don't get it..
      but I'm interested in knowing what beats were wack on them albums 😆 🤣

    The song is called Death Row East. Why would it sound West? I thought it was supposed to sound east coast. But that's just me.

    If anyone says the production on this album was bad is really just trying to find fault.
