I would have stained it a dark cherry or mahogany color bc that's what a lot of high end furniture was made of back in the day bc the wood was strong and pieces wood(😉) last a lifetime.

I always favored oak and red tones but last February I refinished a headboard for my daughter. She liked darker tones and I bought a stain called Kona, very dark, almost black. I have stained several items in the meantime, including some cedar planks for an accent wall in my bathroom. I really like it for now, it feels fresh. Maybe in 20 years I’ll think it looks dated. The darker tones can certainly hide things the lighter ones won’t.

That black stain is a winner!! Now the buffet really looks art deco-ish. The gold leaf on the hardware is very elegant. The oil finish is classy. All in all a truly beautiful transformation. The lines of that piece, its construction were so worth all your effort--and I know you put in so many hours sanding. You have become an artist, Jay.

Epic restoration. You've certainly achieved the opulence intended, although I'm not sure I can forgive you for staining that beautiful wood so dark, especially having gone to such great lengths to unveil it! That said, I did blacken two dining chairs that were beyond salvation despite hours of sanding, so I'm not innocent. Beautiful! First time I’ve seen a restoration that did not just paint the piece and be done with it. It’s a shame there are not more like you to restore these wonderful pieces of history. 🇺🇸

Great job. You transformed it up another level. The grain looks so much better exposed like that. Using the dark stain understates the carving perfectly. I thought it overpowered the look originally. It has an Asian Japanese look to it now imo.

Absolutely Beautiful. I Love the dark brown. And the gold leaf is beautiful. You touched and made the piece beautiful again.

I was very concerned about the DARK STAIN…but it came out like ART DECO should, BRILLIANTLY. Excellent workmanship once again. 🙋🏻‍♀️💫🙌🏽

I'm sorry...for me, the black stain just ate the buffet. I think you did a beautiful restoration but chose the wrong finishes.

I agree - elegant and representative of the period. Well done!

  • @ГалинаОстрикова-п3м

A lot of work was invested in the restoration! Great attention to detail! I would leave the natural, warm structure of the tree. In the style of wabi-sabi, in imperfection - a unique beauty!

I think it works well in the ebony-style colour with gold fittings. Beautifully done.
