I would have stained it a dark cherry or mahogany color bc that's what a lot of high end furniture was made of back in the day bc the wood was strong and pieces wood(😉) last a lifetime.
I love that you touched absolutely every part of this piece. I wouldn’t have gone with black stain, but I know this piece will be treasured by its next owner.
I always favored oak and red tones but last February I refinished a headboard for my daughter. She liked darker tones and I bought a stain called Kona, very dark, almost black. I have stained several items in the meantime, including some cedar planks for an accent wall in my bathroom. I really like it for now, it feels fresh. Maybe in 20 years I’ll think it looks dated. The darker tones can certainly hide things the lighter ones won’t.
I agree. He worked so hard on perfecting several small details, but then ended up covering up all that detail work with black. Maybe he just decided that the imperfections were so profound that black was the only solution.
This lovely old fashioned piece would help out my new otherwise IKEA Grandpa compact room. But not stained BLACK! It does look good black , for a different room😎
I have waited so long for someone to risk giving an Art Deco piece the ebony treatment and finally it happens! What an absolute triumph. I really hope you do this again. I’m sure it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but it sure is mine.
That black stain is a winner!! Now the buffet really looks art deco-ish. The gold leaf on the hardware is very elegant. The oil finish is classy. All in all a truly beautiful transformation. The lines of that piece, its construction were so worth all your effort--and I know you put in so many hours sanding. You have become an artist, Jay.
He even got to lay down on the job and read a book! Seriously, the buffet turned out spectacularly 😮!!! I'm hoping that you decided to keep it for yourself! 👍🤗😃
You bring joy to my heart when I see the expertise that you have redoing these beautiful pieces. So many "furniture artists" scuff sand, slap some paint on them and call it finished. It makes me sad to see beautiful pieces done this way . These pieces are the history of the past eras and need to be treated as such. Thank you for your patience to do so.
What an improvement! Making a decision on what tone, light or dark, medium?....Then you decide and voila! You have breathed new life into it and you are proud of it....some may agree on the tone, some will not, we can not please everyone, but what counts is that you are happy with the end result and we are delighted you shared your love for restoration with us....Thank you!😊
It’s stunning Jay! You’re a true professional with so much attention to detail. Your editing is spot on! Touch & go without belaboring any one area of the work. I really appreciate that! You’re a gentle man & I’ve said it before, but your videos are so relaxing & that cat has really grown to love you as we all have 🥰
That’s very kind of you. There are 3 different cats by the way 😂 they all come and go. I appreciate the feedback on my edits. I do work hard to make them easy to watch.
@@rhondaivory3009 What makes you say that? Jay does outstanding work. There’s no need to be negative if his choices aren’t what you would’ve chosen. You have the right to refinish furniture in your own way. This man is a true professional that works very hard & he deserves only praise!
@@rhondaivory3009 I guess you and I are the only ones in the comment section that didn’t like this at all. I about died when he put the black on after all that work!! Don’t care for it at all.
I was liking the natural look until you changed it to black, then I was like “ HELL YEAH!!” Excellent job!! watching you has really made me want to tackle my dresser cleanup and an armoire topper for it
So elegant. I admire your doing the gold leaf instead of just gold paint. Whenever I see pieces like this, in my mind I see them in a rich Chinese red or cinnabar.
I can't even imagine how many hours of work you put into this piece. There is no detail too small for you to tackle. The end result is brilliant!! Your skills, your creativity, and your amazing sense of humor will keep me coming back for more. Another GREAT job!! Well done!
I was unsure about the black, because you can’t really see the grain at first, but when you do the close up pictures you can see the beautiful grain. Very wonderful piece and it does look very rich! Take care!
I so appreciate your absolute attention to detail. Love also your humour about the dull parts. You really do a fabulous job and it is a joy to behold. Keep up the good work.
You did an excellent job, but I cannot help but want to see the original would not painted and stained black I can’t help it you’re not the only one I see this too. I love your work and it’s excellent. In fact, you made it look as if it was done in a factory that’s how good it turned out. But I really like the natural wood.
I loved your work with cleaning up and preparing the piece. I would not have taken such a dark color, in my opinion it hides some of the details, and I love to see the woodgrains. Still beautifully performed !❤
I laughed out loud at your sanding. 😂 Pretty much how I feel with every project. I distract myself with true crime in my headphones. This piece is stunning and your videos are some of my favorites. Never stop!!
Absolutely gorgeous! You took a lot of time to make this piece beautiful again! Awesome job beautiful work! Love it! Take a rest after all that sanding :)
Wow!!! That turned out beautifully!! The gold leaf on the pulls and knobs really made the buffet look handsome!! Loved your antics while doing all of the sanding!!!
Absolutely stunning piece! Your craftsmanship & patience with this piece and the others I've watched you refurbish is spot on and stands out as testament to your appreciation for your art. Thank you for sharing your love of restoration with us
Epic restoration. You've certainly achieved the opulence intended, although I'm not sure I can forgive you for staining that beautiful wood so dark, especially having gone to such great lengths to unveil it! That said, I did blacken two dining chairs that were beyond salvation despite hours of sanding, so I'm not innocent. I always learn a lot from your videos - including where I've gone wrong in the past. Your patience and attention to detail are enviable. Thanks again for sharing your work with us.
Came back because of the contest, I already know why you are my absolute favourite, You have incredible cats, and you know how to pet them, you are a perfectionist, you are very creative, you are very funny and above all you have your taste is without doubt the best.

Great job. You transformed it up another level. The grain looks so much better exposed like that. Using the dark stain understates the carving perfectly. I thought it overpowered the look originally. It has an Asian Japanese look to it now imo.
A lot of work was invested in the restoration! Great attention to detail! I would leave the natural, warm structure of the tree. In the style of wabi-sabi, in imperfection - a unique beauty!
I own this Art Deco Buffet, wife and I bought it off Jay, he did an amazing job, it still looks just like this now. We love it.
You guys have great taste. I am a little envious, but on the other hand so happy you've given it a loving home.
Great to hear that it is being appreciated and giving you guys some pleasure.
The transformation is amazing..
Красота
¡ que suerte ! Enhorabuena.
I love the way you joke when sanding for hours ....it always makes me smile .
Stunning. Well done. Some black wax on top of the gold will tone it down and tone it in.
I would have stained it a dark cherry or mahogany color bc that's what a lot of high end furniture was made of back in the day bc the wood was strong and pieces wood(😉) last a lifetime.
The workmanship is beautiful but I don't like the dark color, either.
I think a rosewood interior would have lifted the massiveness,

I wonder what it would look like with cherrywood detailing. I’ve actually seen it done once before and it looked great.
Wow, awesome 🤩 glad you enjoyed it

Very good job 🎉
Love it. You nailed high end Art Deco. Better than original imo. A lot of "oak" Arts and Craft peices were stained black too at early 1900's.
Thank you 🙏 I’m glad you enjoyed it

Thanks so much! 😊
Fantastic work! The gold leaf hardware made this piece so special.
I wonder if the gold leaf is a problem to clean, if it wears off easily?
I love the deco era, furniture pieces were so beautiful. Your work is phenomenal!
How lovely to see that beautiful wood revealed again. It looks amazing even before the luxurious new finish!
Thank you very much!
Amazing transformation. And I really enjoy your humor and I love the cat cameos!

Absolutely Beautiful. I Love the dark brown. And the gold leaf is beautiful. You touched and made the piece beautiful again.
I was very concerned about the DARK STAIN…but it came out like ART DECO should, BRILLIANTLY. Excellent workmanship once again. 🙋🏻♀️💫🙌🏽
I cannot imagine how many hours this took. SO beautiful!
I'm sorry...for me, the black stain just ate the buffet. I think you did a beautiful restoration but chose the wrong finishes.

Amazing! It's pure art! You're a genius! I love it! It should stay in a museum!

A lot of work was invested in the restoration! Great attention to detail! I would leave the natural, warm structure of the tree. In the style of wabi-sabi, in imperfection - a unique beauty!
I think it works well in the ebony-style colour with gold fittings. Beautifully done.
Before seeing the finished product, I think the color of the inside of drawer openings would look great. Ok, it looks amazing.
It came out beautifully. Love the gold on the black.
You have taken an old piece ready for the landfill and turned it into something absolutely stunning .
Opulent and Elegant. Mission accomplished. Beautiful work.
This is a beautiful piece in itself but you brought it to it's glory. Well done.
