Thinking about the original core of the ape group in Rise, There was Caesar, Maurice, Rocket, Koba, and Buck. Buck gave his life to save Caesar, and Koba fell trying to usurp Caesar, and now Caesar meets his end. Rocket and Maurice are now the last of that original core group. Its sad to see lives of such struggle end but no less hard is having to be the ones who live on.

Maurice and Rocket! His first 2 out of 3 friends in elementary school! 😂 Maurice was the fat kind kid that no one really hangout with. Rocket was the kid who bullied everyone cause he wasn't getting attention at home. 😂 RIP. The Silverback gollira who sacrificed himself for the class and got caught up with the cops. That mf help ceaser bully back the bully. Fucking wild how that shit went. Imagine if that gorilla survived. Imagine the impact he wouldve had!

0:33 - Caesar sees his young son Cornelius playing, and begins to have second thoughts about dying, thinking that he should be there as a father despite the little strength he has left. Maurice, seeing that Caesar wants and deserves to rest, assures Caesar that his son will grow to remember his lessons. This allows Caesar to die peacefully with a smile on his face, knowing that his son will be safe, and his tribe is finally free.

Cesar’s death is simply one of the most majestic shot I have ever seen in a movie.
The lighting, the tree behind him, Maurice standing next to him and reaching for his leaning body as he slowly fades into oblivion... it looks like a wonderful and beautiful Gauguin painting celebrating the death of a king, so many vibes that brings back a religious or spiritual freedom. It is simply beautiful, the perfect ending for this story. Never saw a trilogy ending so well.
Edit after YEARS: Glad to see this comment got over a hundred likes, thank you all so much! Would like to point out something else I just caught while rewatching this wonderful trilogy: all the movies ends with Cesar’s staring at something, is a recurring theme, in his eyes we can see pure intelligence, we recognize a being that for his purity and determination reveal to be even more human than we are. But have we ever focused on what is he staring at? At the end of the first movie he’s witnessing his new home, surrounded by his brothers and sisters, although he does look kind of concerned, because Cesar knows that they are not truly free, humans are still near, strong and probably going to come back at them.
By the end of the second movie this change: Cesar is ready for war, he knows that he will have to lead his people in a bloodbath and that he will loose many, but he’s not afraid anymore. That long, powerful stare toward the camera is not a stare of simple determination: Cesar’s looking at us, the audience, the humans. He’s accepting the challenge that will come and will stop at nothing, and his eyes in that scene are more human than ever.
And then we get here, to this wonderful, beautiful scene at 1:50. Cesar’s looking at his people, who are finally happy, free, playing and laughing in their new home. No humans, no fear of enemy, no weapons. Everything from the sky to the ground is peaceful and Cesar’s final stare to the screen, to his people, to US watchers, is accompanied by a tired yet peaceful smile. Cesar’s at peace. No matter the war, no matter the pain and the people he lost, he’s at peace. And isn’t that what makes a true human?
Someone that despite sacrifices and pain in the end only wants to see his family and friends one last time. And that is the last thing Cesar sees.
This trilogy has many recurring themes that goes from racism to animal abuse to war and so on and so on, and most people seems to always concentrate around the growth of Cesar from outcast to king.
But I think this movie is about humanity in his pure way. Without humanity we are just like apes, mindless animals that lives to satisfy desires and emotions. Intelligence is what makes us what we are cause it gives us the power to control those emotions, it makes us see what could be right and what could be wrong. Cesar’s journey is a journey to fully become the purest form of human: a flawed being that despite all the pain will do anything to save his own people, even when he doesn’t truly know them. This makes him one of the most well written character of cinema, cause never a character transformation could be considered as literal as metaforica as this one. Thank you all for reading this!

If you were forced to kill your former best friend of 10 years, had your wife and child killed, suffered from PTSD and probable paranoia from all the years of having to be wary of enemies, would you want to continue living once nobody else needed you to save them anymore? Caesar dying here although a bit implausible after weeks of having the wound makes a lot of sense in terms of plot.
Not to mention it's a great point for the next trilogy to follow on from. I really hope that the old Planet of the Apes films aren't canon in this timeline because that would completely ruin Caesar's character development and the entire point of the trilogy.

Caesar lost his mother due to her protecting him with her own life, Caesar lost his own human father and human family to the Simian Flu outbreak, Caesar had to put down his own sworn brother he thought could be trusted, and now, Caesar lost his wife and eldest son to a militia solder. But at the end, he did helped protect his own kind from war and helped to make sure his youngest son live again to see his future growing up. And he smiled as he finally completed his goal till his last breath before his sights vanquished. Gotta say, props to the trilogy for creating such a wonderful protagonist we can enjoy seeing and admire from.
