The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Jackie had everything... the voice, the moves, the style, the looks, the charisma.
We love you Jackie!
Easily the most gifted and talented rock and roll and rhythm and blues recording artist / performer that ever lived....and remains unequalled to this day......a once in a lifetime phenomenon.
Anyone familiar with Jackie Wilson knows he's legendary .
You should check out his son.......same thing.....just amazing....
Absolutely!
Hi 👋 Mike do you know if Bobby is really Jackie's son ? 2-6-2022
@@sheiladavis6523 .....People I know tell me Bobby Brooks Wilson is not Jackie Wilson's son .
@@SSGTA440 WHAT!! WOW
Before Chris, before Usher, before Michael, there was Jackie Wilson. His influence is still being seen this day.
Before Jackie Wilson
There was James brown. Get your facts right
@@TattooniacThey came out at the same time. Wilson was out a year before Brown
@@dejacage8722 false
James Brown came out in 1954
Jackie Wilson came out in 1957.
If I'm wrong school me😊
@@Tattooniacmost definitely. James Brown was the man and MJ, CB and Usher site JB as an influence. They also site Jackie as an influence, and because this is a Jackie video my comment was fitting.
Workout Jackie, Workout - true vocal beast. They didn't call him Mr. Excitement for nothing! RIP
The greatest singer and stage performer in the history of rock and roll?
The man in your photo is.
Absolutely Correct!!!
Yes, certainly the greatest vocal range.
Yes!
Influenced everyone from Marvin to Michael
What a dynamic performer. He truly earned the name “Mr. Excitement”. He should’ve been bigger than he became.
Uh he was quite a star until his stroke on stage in N.J in the 70's he headlined everywhere from 1958 till then.i dont think except for Sam cooke or James Brown that anyone could top his act. had otis redding lived he'd be right there too.
@@recordguy4321 agreed
Jackie was Brunswick Records' top selling pop and R&B act as well as in the rock & roll realm From 1957 to 1975. Not many came close.
@@kevingoins9858 oh ok, but he wasnt on Motown. Music critics say his career would've went a different way had he gone with them.
@@ghanasoul His association with manager Nat Tarnapol who was closely associated with the NY mob certainley didnt help
He had everything.looks ,singing, range stage presence.may GOD bless him
One of the best male singers of all time!!
I was 14, and our family never missed 'The Ed Sullivan Show' on Sunday night. Jackie Wilson was one of the best entertainers who ever lived. Even Elvis Presley was a big fan of Jackie.
Probably the Greatest Entertainer in history!! He had the voice, the moves. He's not even out of breath!!!!
This is so wonderful. Everyone’s having a ball. Note the smiles on the musicians and the enthusiastic clapping by the dancers, and, of course, all brought to you by the incomparable Jackie Wilson!
Jackie Wilson was a human rocket 🚀, yet he was the coolest, confident man around. What a show it would have been for Sam Cooke, James Brown, and Wilson to perform together.
Sam Cooke and Jackie did perform on the same bill- several times. Sam usually closed because he had more hits.
The best voice, looks, clothes, moves. What a powerhouse ! Smooth.
Doing that "back over flip" .Just imagine seeing him at the Apollo.
OMG!!! Never seen this before!!! The best live performance i have ever seen of Jackie. Can't stop watching this. Thank you so much for this.
Everything here just works! The energy is magnetic! What a great item to keep!
I've never seen this before either. omg....
Check him out on Shindig
@@richardleonard4281 very entertaining
His rendition of the song on Shindig was much better to me
Such a dynamic vocalist and entertainer
Hard to believe anyone can be that talented, but he was!
A great performer! I still prefer the "Baby Workout" version he did on "Shindig!" in 1965. Includes Righteous Bros., Darlene Love and everybody else who was on that episode.
Very elegant set for the appearance. Jackie Wilson, while singing with great flair, is pretty constrained in his movement for this prime time Sunday night performance. For those who are interested in how much Jackie could move on "Baby Workout", find the 1965 Shindig show closer with The Blossoms, The Chambers Brothers and The Righteous Brothers. Wilson seems to defy gravity, with Darlene Love beaming with enjoyment. Thanks TESS for this posting.
This clip really highlights his physical dancing talent. Dancing on the equivalent of a small, square, coffee table, in a tuxedo, no mic stand to hang the mic on, with the tempo of this song sped up tremendously and he still never missed a beat! Oh yeah, and with a bullet lodged in his back close to his spine.
Now People , THAT ! IS A PERFORMER AND ONE OF THE GREATEST TO VOCALIST OF ALL TIME
"Well it's plain to see you put a hurting on me but it's a natural fact (ha) I like it like that". Fantástico
Gifted man
Wow, a Jackie Wilson video I've never seen before! Thank you! This was the great Jackie Wilson's last appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. He also sang his #1 ballad hit, "Night", which is one of the greatest pop records ever made, so I hope you will post that too!
When you watch JW doing this you can see his experience as a Golden Glove Champ and his Physical Acumen from the “Work-Out” he did Many Times!
I was born in 1989 I sure wish I could’ve grow up when this music was at its peak . It’s very nice to see and hear now ! Jackie Wilson was and still is up there with the greatest of all time performing and singers
We had the 90s be appreciative of that my brother...
You had Michael Jackson, lol. Zoomers like me didn’t have that privilege.
Nah you had Michael Jackson. Jackie Wilson was his inspiration and MJ was an amazing entertainer
Unreal Talent Superb Phenomenal
Without a doubt truly Mr. Excitement. My favorite Jacket Wilson is To be loved. He was so good. What a performer. He could sing and dance. How wonderful. R.I.P. Another good song is I'll be satisfied. It's like WOW.
The great Jackie Wilson! Even with these make-shift musicians playing a hundred miles an hour and with very little room to really show off his dance moves, Jackie overcame the obstacles and delivered a solid performance. His voice as solid as ever!
Wow! Just think . . . Mr. Jackie Wilson did his signature dance moves on a platform the size of a coffee table. Just imagine if "Mr. Excitement" was allowed to preform on a FULL stage!!!
He was a man of many talents
Awesome! I thought I had seen all clips with the great Jackie Wilson but apparently not.
There are many more out there that are not posted on RUclips.
Now that's what I call a performance!
What a talented and crowd pleasing singer and dancer. One of the best ever. Such terrible tragedies in his life makes me so sad but he accomplished so much success while on earth and now he is resting in peace. God Bless Mr. Jackie Wilson.
When you're dancing on the floor and Jackie Wilson jumps on that floor "CLEAR OUT"
Damn... That man can move.. He smooth.
First time I’ve seen this I think? I might have watched one other time,. Anyway,. Yep,. Same answer,. That Man Is a GOAT! Unbelievable Talent!!!
I was a go go girl in nightclubs in the 60s here in Philadelphia + local areas + when the pop explosion came about l did not know all the new rock music coming in + had promotional men come in asked what music do l want in the old jukeboxes "Jackie Wilson's song Higher + Higher" l chose got me many cheers from the crowd as l had to adlib on stage real quick I'll never forget how great it was Thanks Jackie! Gonna be some sweet sounds coming from the song "Nightshift" We'll always remember, listen, dance to your great talent of songs even today You we're the hippest of all
ugh, legend!
JW even makes it look fun and simple! What a Talent!
What a great artist

His moves, so sway. Greatest!
Jackie Wilson as Mr Excitement was me and my grandmother favorite idol. Let work it out baby. Love his energy and move. I wish i can turn the hand of time. I miss those time, it was a fun time. We had a good time. Miss him. Continue sleep in paradise. I hope you still rocking it up in heavy.💞🙏
One of the Greatest Entertainers of all time. Absolutely amazing ❤❤RPB
He was one cool cat.

Those high notes and that sustain...
Jackie Was One Cool Smooth Performer . This Performance With That ' Funk Brothers Style ' Bass Beat Was One Of A Kind .

🤗 Thank You Ed Sullivan Show For Sharing This Historical Music Archive ! 🤗
He's awesome!
Thank you thank you thank you.
Sensational! I've always loved this recording, and the totality of the performances here is that usually overgenerously applied word, great.
This used to be my ringtone 😅❤️❤️❤️
The most vocal range in a rock singer, I think...
Wow! The backing on this is bonkers! Is this Ed Sullivan's house band? I could have sworn it was an electric bass with that driving guitar sound! I'm no expert on guitars ( being a drummer)but what is going on with that set up? Is he playing a lefty but the strings set upside down?? And this is fast compared to the record too!! All in all a bonkers rendition!!
@@harvardkarbodie bass strings go at the top working down to the highest pitch is that correct? Joe Maphis regularly used a bass string to maintain rhythm while using steel claws for the other strings I think 🤔
It's not the drummer you hear playing ;-) Notice he does not touch the cymbals ones ;-) So might be the same with the guitar.
@@jerrypriessen8137 I see what your saying but what would be the purpose of miming to a tune that literally is an overdriven version of the single?
@@harvardkarbodie I have a theory that this fella is a left handed player that learned on a right-handed guitar and that is what is causing the confusion
@@markjames8603 the vocal and the big band are live. I have my doubts about the trio. And you could ask the same about the ballet dancers 😂 Screen filling.
This is the 50s, early 60s? God spared me a lotta heartache. If I was around back then I'd of chased this man all over the fk'g planet.
and he would have let you catch him
Ayer lo descubri y me encanto! Tiempos donde habia que que tener verdadero talento para cantar... no como hoy en dia😢

No to Hollywood trash! Let's have a quality documentary then an amazing dvd set of TV appearances. ❤
A great influence to all crooners!
"The King of Soul"....plain and simple. Going back many yrs ago, my stepfather would tell me stories about Jackie Wilson that would make you think about throwing up....because my stepdad was a chauffeur and "errand runner" for any and every performer that would sing at the old Howard Theater in my hometown Wash/DC...and Jackie's temper and taste for hookers, was no secret to anyone who had any kind of proximity to him. So, I heard stories of Jackie getting in fights all over town, usually in defense of someone in his entourage or band...but I also heard these jaw dropping stories of Mother and Fathers bringing their own daughters to Jackie's shows, so that he would pay more attention to them, than anyone else.
So, I can only speak to what I heard about him, even tho' my stepfather was not a liar. I mean, the man made hotel reservations for people like Jackie, any number of performers from Motown, The OJays, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, The Spinners, Teddy Pendergrass and even a young Aretha Franklin, to name just a few. And usually those hotels and motels, were on the other side of 'the bridge' where the neighborhoods were predominantly black. But when it came to music and the art of singing, there was no one better than Jackie, sorry. As much as i adore Sam, Otis, and the like...there was NO ONE like Jackie Wilson.
Oh, this is sooooo GREAT!!! Thank you for posting this. It really made my saturday night!
Totally amazing on so many levels!!! It would look like a novel if I really put it all in words here. 🙏🌎🌟🎁🎯❣️
Never seen this one, very nice
THANKS FOR THE POST......THIS WAS GREAT !!!
Omg Jackie was amazing none like him.
Fred Rutherford is pounding those drums
Hilarious! 😂😂
WOW OUT COLD SMOOTH BROTHER RIGHT HERE “MR EXCITEMENT”
Lovely!!
Possibly the greatest Soul Singer who lived, alongside the likes of Sam Cooke, Solomon Burke, James Brown, Ben E King, & Smokey Robinson. You won't find singers like this anymore, not even someone like John Legend!
John Legend? not even in the same league or universe for that matter
@@recordguy4321 agreed.
Jackie Wilson is the greatest ALL AROUND singer of all time! Those others were great. They were singers. JW was in a league of his own. A true VOCALIST. I dare anyone to listen to Forever And A Day, Lonely Teardrops, Higher & Higher, Beautiful Day and Night in that order and then name ANYONE else who can slip so comfortably and effortlessly between genres. Not Cooke, not Burke, not Gaye, not Redding, not Presley, not Orbison, not Brown, not Davis Jr, not Sinatra, not Vandross.Trying to find Jackie Wilson’s equal and the comparisons are unrealistic. Like trying to find Mozart’s equal. It’s truly a once in a lifetime phenomenon.
For the five who put thumbs down need to stop listening to Justin Bieber or k pop. This is a great singer and man. He belongs to God now.
He was one of the performers who influenced MJ. Imagine a young 10 year old boy behind a curtain watching and studying every move of JW at Apollo theater 🤩
Dando de 10 a 0, em muitos artistas do nosso tempo. Talento atemporal. giving ten to zero on many artists of our time. Timeless talent.
MARAVILHOSO!
Love it! So much!
Great production number with a great singer
The energy.
Cyndi Lauper made a brilliant cover of this song. Go check it out. Great vocals!
Wow! 🎉
I can’t believe he gone
Buenísimo
This song was used in a Movie called- Dance with Me-- with Vanessa Williams & Cheyenne.. lovely movie,,,, he comes to the USA under the pretense of looking for work- & he contacts a friend of his mothers, which is actually his bio father who owns a dance studio. Vanessa is a dance teacher,,, every friday night they have a dance party,, studio members, students & the community is welcome.... Vanessa dances with her student to this song, just watching her made me want to join a dance studio.... good movie if you can watch it..
Mister excitement
Before my time, he was a superstar.
AMERICA'S GREATEST MALE SINGER! Elvis was Right! Listen to the "Body and Soul" Album on RUclips! THE STUDIO'S RECORDING MUSICIANS COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! HAVE FUN.
my god
❤🙏🏾
No doubt he was super star ⭐️ Mr excitement 🎸
🌹🌹🌹🕺💫💃🌹🌹🌹
Now this is live, possibly not like the Shindig clip. What a great singer and dancer.
Shindig clip is live as well ❤
@@Jackie-ji2sj First Wilson is amazing. I listened carefully to the live Shindig clip. Much of it seems live, I agree. But at the end if the clip it seems as if the vocal disconnects with the video. So idk. I don't know how his trajectory got derailed, but he belongs in the firmament of Rock & Roll Stars.
Dang.....what a talent ! A little Elvis at 1:27
Insane range
It’s the note he hits at 1:24 and then how he slips into that tone at 1:27 that separates Jackie from all other singers. Jackie was a vocal master.
I didn't know he performed this on Ed Sullivan. I think he was holding back a little. Compare this to his performance of this song on Shindig.
WHEN PERFORMERS HAD SELF RESPECT AND WERE A GOOD INFLUENCE.
Hard-core 💪 💃 🕺 dance 101.
What an entertainer ! And what about those dancers?! ❤️😃
no black dancers. they would invite singers but give hire dancers of color.
Ok now I see where Elvis got that dance move from 1:11
Sorry, Elvis NEVER danced or moved like Jackie "Mr. Excitement" Wilson did in this performance! IMHO
@@ddlee202257 I’ve never see Elvis do anything more than pelvis thrusts and Karate type movements that I guess passed for dancing
