He was performing at the Latin Casino in my home town of Cherry Hill NJ in September of 1975. On the line "My heart is crying, crying" he touched his heart, as he always did in this part of the song, and collapsed on stage. People at first thought it was part of his stage act. God rest his soul. We lost a great talent way too soon at age 49.
@Mac Fields Yes, he was quite a remarkable talent. What a voice! There are several books about his life and music out there. His life was somewhat unorthodox, to say the least. He left a trail of women and children-- this led to a battle over his estate and who was going to have the power of attorney to direct his medical decisions. I had always wondered why he was never transferred out of the NJ nursing home back to his home area of Detroit, and this is the reason. A lot of legal wrangling.
