The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

In 1975 Jackie Wilson had a heart attack while performing on stage at a small theater in NJ. He collapsed into a coma suffering severe brain damage. When Elvis learned of this he immediately sent a check to pay for Jackie’s hospital expenses and medical bills.
Not true, but Elvis and Jackie admired each other. I know from someone who was at the hospital that Elvis sent a dozens of pale-colored roses to Jackie’s bedside when Jackie was shot at the height of his career. One of the bullets was too close to his spine for surgeons to remove, and Jackie, who lost a kidney, lived with that bullet for the rest of his life.
You may be thinking of Roy Hamilton
I can't believe this was in 1962 because this song was from early 1959, there's no way he'd sing a three-year-old song on Ed Sullivan.
I love Jackie Wilson, he has such a God given talent. Totally natural!
I heard that he studied voice from a renown opera voice teacher
One of the most dynamic performers ever. Great voice and great moves. It doesn't get any better..
+Timothy Wells So many to choose from but him and Marvin Gaye are by far great voice but what JW has is them moves so nimble, light and smooth brother gave us a gift.
+Timothy Wells You do realise that Jackie Wilson's dead don't you?
@@thesoultwins72 obviously???
Love Jackie & all his songs
I remember seeing clips of him when I was around 7 or 8 in like 1990... Not realizing that these were infact older videos and I fell absolutely in love with Him... omggg I swooned..
I was over the moon... And I would listen to his records and just stare at his pictures on the cover... Soon I was told that he had infact passed years before... I WAS DEVASTATED!!!!!! I didn't understand that wasn't a contemporary at the time because his music was so timeless.... I mean I cried and morned him!!!! He was my first love... Oh My Gosh!!! So watching this now bought back all of those feelings... Omggg I still swoon... That is why.... I love him So... What a Sensation.
The most handsome man in showbiz during his day!!!
jackie wilson i wish there were more people like him.
I remember now. Black soul artists used to look gorgeous, move gorgeous and sound gorgeous. Jackie Wilson was the epitome of gorgeous. His energy was fantastic.
This guy made everyone want to dance in the 50's and 60's to rock music. Long before Michael Jackson.
Jackie Wilson was like....the epitome of 'Cool' and 'Charisma'. That's some stage presence.
Im 20, live in a small town in mexico, and STILL BELIVE THIS MAN WAS THE BEST PERFORMANCE IN THE 20TH CENTURY, LOOK AT HIM!! o_o
you see Talent when you see talents
You are now 33 🎉
His range was incredible, and he was a great entertainer.
Michael Jackson was captivated by Jackie Wilson. He had every reason to admire this great entertainer!!!
Yet when Jackie Wilson died in debt and without a head stone Michael Jackson and his multi-millions was nowhere to be seen.
@@truthhitman7473 dont blame Michael...there were plenty others...Most of all the Record industry & all of those con men without any morals.
James and Jackie= Michael
@Ajmal Ali
Wrong..... Michael Jackson was 23 in 1984.
@@yvettecleveland5347
Yes, there were plenty of others..... But Michael was the one calling out Jackie Wilson's name and saying how great Jackie was. Well if he was so great , why didn't Michael help Jackie's family ?
One of the greatest singers--ever! Splendid performer as well!
His voice was flawless! No electronics, no dancers, the best entertainer ever even Elvis went to see him ,Boy there will never be another! God Bless Jackie!
Brother did all that moving with no mic and didn't bust a sweat singing clearly! #Gifted
HE WAS Incredable'

Leo Scarpoli and no autotune, like the crap today!
Incredible athlete
Its sad to see how he was in the tops of the charts back then and now it feels like he is nearly erased from history. So sad.
He looks elegant in that suit.
Wow.....Jackie Wilson, was one of Michael Jackson's idols....I was stationed in the Phillipines 1968-1970...they had a guy and a girl singing in a club downtown named" Chit and Rudy". Rudy would sing a medley of Jackie's songs, UN-BELIEVABLE, I thought it was Jackie himself. What a voice, it and he will live forever, thanks for the post......
Awesome song....We met Jackie Wilson in person...He invited us to his hotel room...We had a wonderful conversation and visit...I will always cherish the autographed photo he gave me, and a great big hug and kiss....We loved him and his music very much...Always have, always will...RIP, Dear Jackie...xxoo
Jackie Wilson...
James Brown...
Sam Cooke...
Just cannot say it stronger than that really !!!!!
Wow! Just listening Again! This Man is Still Incredible!!! Jackie Always blows me away with his Incredible Voice!!! He’s Definitely the GOAT!!!
That cat was smooth. His step and songs is smooth , As a cool summer breeze
he had his own style, what a man!
they must pay back all the money they own to Jackie ! this is just too much talent in one man ! we should make some tributes for him too not only Micheal and even have documentary about his life and a movie he should be the king of soul !
MAN JACKIE WILSON. RIP LOVE YOU SO!!!!!!
I think I watched this about 50 times and still love it like it was the first time. What a great performer so smooth and he looked so comfortable in his skin
hi wendy he was more than comfortable in his own skin he was fantastic as a person and as a performer many people copied him
there he is alone on the stage putting on a great show always
Richard in the tropics
i agree
Wendy Lovejoy Real Estate Investor I did too 😍😀
Kind of amazing to think that back than to pass in the music industry you actually had to be good and ACTUALLY have a voice (if you sang). Nowadays, you need to have a big ass for music videos and the rest is auto-tuned. There are some good ones still here but still....

We are looking at these artists in retrospect. This was considered hardcore rock and roll and many thought that this was vulgar during its time. In the age of formation, you have to dig deeper than what big record labels present to you in mainstream media. They have complete control. It's all about marketing/money.

Jackie Wilson is a pioneer of dance and soulful expression, God bless you Jackie for sharing your divine gifts with us. R.I.P.
Jackie Wilson was a BAD man. He had it all. I love him.
Along with Sam Cooke, this man changed the game forever. Only Sam wrote his own music.
Such a classic singer!! Still listening in 2023
The 15 people who rated this " dislike " must be "Brain Dead." Jackie Wilson was such a classy and electrifying performer. Jackie Wilson and Bobby Darin were the two classiest performers in the early 60's.
No swearing or obscene gestures... just plain outstanding talent, plus class! Love him! :)
He definitely was obscene lol you must’ve not seen, read or known about his performances
@@chaci1 Also, why are there comments on 1,349,784 videos that all say "no obscenities, no this, no that..." most of us just *want to enjoy a wonderful performance* not spend precious time comparing 1953 to 2023 and assessing 2023 to be disgusting. Just try to enjoy yourself and appreciate what brings you joy.

i grew up on Jackie Wilson music i live here in Detroit, Michigan

I see why Micheal Jackson was a big fan of the legendary Jackie Wilson the man was smooth as Silk
The man who influenced Michael Jackson's dancing!
Exacly!
Also James Brown.
Lynda Anthony 🤩
Lynda Anthony it was also Jackie Wilson. Before The Jackson 5 went on stage for the Apollo, he said he was inspired by Jackie Wilson because he was the act before J5
Also Joe Tex!
i heard Micheal Jackson studied jackie wilsons moves and dance when he sang ,and if you watch the Lonely teardrops video you can tell he did, what a great talent Jackie was nobody put on a show like him.R.I.P.
On this day in 1962 {January 21st} Jackie Wilson performed "That's Why (I Love You So)" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
Three years earlier later on March 23rd, 1959 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #13 and also spent 13 weeks on the Top 100...
Sadly exactly 22 years later on this day in 1984 Jackie Wilson passed away at the young age of 49...
R.I.P. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974}...
one of the best singers in history, period
What a classy guy he was. I would like to know who the idiots are that voted this thumbs down and what kind of music they listen too? Rap? Watch Jackie move... he was a lot like Elvis, but I bet these performers were held back in their moves by the producers in their time. But Jackie and the rest of these artists will go on forever in memory and in their music.
Because of energetic performances like this...Jackie Wilson was nicknamed "Mr. Excitement".
he's a god. not given his due for the influence he had on some of the most popular musicians the world has ever known. michael jackson and robert plant both acknowledge the impact jackie had on them musically and as a performer. i love you jackie. you're one of my heroes.
One of the best musical entertainers of all time he had an early influence on Elvis Presley not to Michael Jackson and prince
I CONGRATULATE YOU ON YOUR FUTURE PROJECT..THAT'S WHAT KEEPS ONE YOUNG ALWAYS KEEPING BUSY..I'm 68, I still can dance any rhythm on earth..My dad was a musician, so I grew up dancin'. I was born in P.R. & moved to Bklyn, to an Italian neighborhood. Irish nuns taught me English. When I had to choose language I chose Italian..I'm tri-lingual. My first job was at the Spanish newspaper EL DIARIO-LA PRENSA..also worked in ad agencies & printers. Acquired knowledge to have my publication VIVA MARIA!
I always like him. From the beginning ☆ at 19 teen I moved to Dayton Ohio , to get a job at Corey's Barber Shop ☆ Sam was his first name ☆ this guy was the best ♡ treated me like I was his son ♡ this man was Caucasian * however , he looked just like Jackie Wilson 😊 I've always wanted to say this 😊 ♡ my boss was the greatest ,, so was Jackie Wilson ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ thanks for listening 🎶
Why can't music be like this now? ;(
I was lucky enough to be able to see Jackie Wilson many times in the early to mid 1960's in shows in either Brooklyn or Manhattan.
GRUBS1116 - You are very fortunate to have seen such a great performer in person!
my jaw hurts from smiling sooo much
Pure talent.
He was too good for these times, that's for sure...., what more can i say.
im glad to say that I am 18 and still know who jackie wilson is.My brother brang me up listening to greats and watching the Ed Sullivan Show and Dean Martin. Jackie Wilson is one of my favorite old time singers.
They say the greatest die before their time.
There are artists that are good, but there are few that are great.
He's Great.
Jackie Wilson will forever be Mr. Entertainment, THAT IS LIVE FOLKS! you hear the snaps, the claps, everything, that voice is crisp clear perfect!
R.I.P Mr. Wilson, you Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Dave Prater, James Brown, all having sessions up in the sky.
Elvis picked many moves from this guy, in fact he had great respect for jackie Wilson.
Straight up entertainer!! ❤
I fell in love with Jackie Wilson voice when my grandmother was playing his songs when i'll was little... I'm 29 yrs old now I still love his songs and his moved .. this day of r&b you can not find someone liked this every r&b guys got to have the pretty women who half naked and the r&b guys trying to show their abs ... beside Jackie , Anthony Hamilton is another one of my favorite
R.I.P Jackie Wilson... he gone but never forgotten
R.I.P Jackie Wilson forever! No more lonely teardrops.
we lived next door to the wilson famiy in downtown detroit in 1958
he is a great singer I still play all of his songs
@Picture111 he is singing live. Thats is why Jackie is the greatest vocalist ever
With all of the so-called docu-drama movies (Ray, La-Bamba, Lyman, Dream Girls, etc) they've made over the past twenty-five years, I fail to understand why a movie has yet to be to be made with an unbelieveable story, about an unbelieveable talent, with an unbelieveable voice, wrapped up in an unbelieveable tradgedy no screen write could ever devise. WHY NOT? For all the money Gordy made off of Wilson, HE (alone) should do it. Or maybe Nate Tarnabaums family? RIP great one!
my mom use to play this when i was a kid, and im only 26
i remember this!!! music is not this good anymore he is one of the best singers ever!!! Jame brown, jackie wilson, and elvis is my top 3
MY DAD'S FAVORITE ARTIST! I CAN SEE WHY.
cant listen to the record version after watching this. Mr. excitement is right.
sofa king awesome.
Wow! He did all that in less than 2 minutes!!!
I was young, now I am learning about the greats such as Jackie Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, and so many others.
I can appreciate their talents now.
This video is fantastic
Class and and awesome set of pipes!
When it comes to the top talents, you should never compare one to the other. Each was a distinctive star in their own right. Each had something a little different to offer. We were so so fortunate to be able to enjoy their individual talent.
True Billy. But Jackie was something else altogether and all the greatest said he was the best!
CERTAINLY, YOUR FAIR ASSESSMENT, BILLY, IS A WELCOME TREAT TO EVERYBODY IN SHOW BUSINESS!
Jackie was without doubt the 'King' of entertainment back then. Elvis modelled himself on this guy big time.
they were best of friends, & always praised each other
@@bbb8997Utter BS....Jackie wasn't friends with Elvis?. They were acquaintances within the music industry. Elvis felt guilty for copying Jackie's style and tried to give him money. RIP Jackie

He was simply the definition of Perfection.. We would watch Ed Sullivan every time he was on..
Beautifully Said! The Magic radiating out of his voice and his passion for his music is unteachable! This is why he inspired greats like Michael Jackson. I love Jackie. His tragic story and beautiful radiance needs to be on the big screens!
Killer. He dwarfs the singing talent of today.

Regrettably I never had the opportunity to see Jackie Wilson in person but he is absolutely one of the BEST Entertainers and he and Elvis became instant friends for life. In an interview, Jackie said he was the "Black Elvis" and when Elvis heard about it, his response was, that makes me the "Black Jackie". They loved and respected each other deeply ❤❤ Two of the BRST all time Entertainers who will always have a Special place in my heart❤
This is better than the studio version.
The stage name "Mr. Excitement" fits him well. It definitely describes the man behind the music
I love Jackie! :D
Wow! That was 5 months Broadcast on CBS before I was born on that year 62..now I'm 50yrs old andwatching this video it actually 51yrs ago since this was aired!! and he still sounds better and performs better then any of the upcoming singers today! Hat Off to you Mr Jackie Sony Leroy Wilson 1934-1974 we all missed you Dean.
Thanks! We watched Ed's show as kids. He was way ahead of his time, promoting equality through music.
you know your tapping your foot as you listen to this :)
This performance was a typical crowd pleaser. 'That's why we love him so' Mr. Excitement RIP.

Great guy but so injustly forgotten
Flawless man Jackie was gorgeous
ik he is the Mann do you even c his fUCKING hair y0 ! ? Check out my doo-wop song in my vidyoz yo . I try to emulate his clean cut shiney hairstyle lol peepz think im trying to emulate elvis presley but not the least , he has a very different messier stray hair style y0 .
I realized allot of things most o fthese artisits trying to find their way to stardom (Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jackie Wilson, Paul Anka, Same Cooke, Eddie Cochran and others) always crossed each others paths like through tours or other things. Which means they sorta started out the same and most of them died around the same age as weel in the young 20s. Which is sad but there music is wonderful. RIP to all of them
love me some Jackie!!
Jackie Wilson is amazing. Love this music. I'm 24 an like the 12 year old that likes this music better I do too. Not a huge fan of todays music. As far as Jackie trying to dress white. For your information alot of people dressed up like that, blacks and whites. The hippie movement hadn't started yet so alot of people dressed like this. As far as him not wearing an afro at this time, it wasn't the style yet. Blacks didn't have afro's and the Beatles had the longest hair.
Jackie yeah!!!!
Amazing talent.
Rest in paradise, Jackie.
✨
i actually like this version the best, even over the actual official recording, i like the slightly faster tempo and just how he sings certain parts of the song differently here. i just wish there was a high quality audio version of this for even more listening enjoyment lol
Jackie Wilson was the model for all single, male performers, including JB, EP, PB & MJ.
wish i was born earlier, music like this keeps me going strong. soulful
Jackie Wilson, ma main man!
So smooth, still ♥️ You Champ.. That’s Why I Love You So, still, yet!!!
