I hope more follow his lead. It's been obvious to me that the current state of men's college basketball sucks in comparison to the great game it once was. I recently watched a documentary about the '85 Nova/Gtown final. I still remember all the players. Now nobody's around long enough to know them. I don't think anybody would care enough to make a college hoops documentary anymore. Again, it just sucks!
Wow, shocking! To retire at age 55 and right before the start of a new season. Excellent career! One national championship and numerous ACC title. I have to question why? Is it health issue? I understand things have changed a lot due to NIL and transfer portal but couldn’t he have coached one more season??? He’s still a very good coach. Maybe he’ll coach in NBA
If it’s nothing personally going on with his life, I agree with you. I think he basically told himself I’m not mentally ready to coach another season like this and decided someone else needs to take over
Hurley has U Conn back at the top of college basketball. Sampson has Houston in the thick of it every season. Oats has Alabama doing exceptionally well each year.
@@randallmadison9910 Houston and Alabama have never won anything, and consistently underperform in the tournament year after year. Those programs are just as fraudulent as Gonzaga.
@@randallmadison9910 true, but with the current state of college sports, how long will they endure before burnout? the days of long tenured(Knight,Wooden,Crum,K,Smith,Williams,Myers, etc)coaches is over 🤔
@skepticalsmurf Romanticizing. Wooden had a money man that enriched players. Bobby Knight was beating up police in Puerto Rico (all the patriots in Indiana that revere law enforcement). North Carolina, one of the finest public universities for academics, argued that its fake classes were not entitlement to just basketball players but was available to all students. College football and basketball have been filthy since Rupp and the point Shaving scandal. This period might be the cleanest it's ever been. Sad but true. But Bennett was good guy. Lost to 16 seed. Didn't fire assistants and run off players. Came back with same team and won it all. That true story would make a great film.
Used to be uva basketball fan he’s going to be missed he was a heck of a coach

I remember watching Tony Bennett play for his dad at UW-Green Bay in the early 90's.
I have no inside information but expect NIL and transferring rules to change be for next year. Not go away but change or more coaches leave.
I would guess that he got tired of the new recruiting, etc..but the timing seems more like something recently happened.

KYLE GUY just came back to help coach this team!
Maybe he has just got tired of the NIL's, the portals for transfers, and all the other changes in college basketball...

It’s something more serious. He just signed a contract extension in June and expressed excitement for the upcoming season.
He wouldn’t have a championship without the portal.
@@CanucksWontWin Who was in the portal at UVA that was part of the Championship team?
Very strange timing… One more season??? The guy is in only 55 years old… Joe Biden is 82 years old😂
Would "swoon" every time I saw this man on TV, the best looking coach in all of sports, sadly the end of an era..
that is surprising,he’s a terrific coach, the days of legacy tenures are over 🤔
