  • I go out camping in winter and build a quick laavu shelter from materials I find laying around. Heavy snowfall comes later when I rest in the cover of my shelter by the warm campfire.

    Things are just getting interesting when you (and so many other Bushcraft RUclipsrs) pack up and go home. Adding a fire reflector would help, and piling on more pine branches with their greenery would help. Showing how to live comfortably in those beautiful surroundings for 2-3 nights would make for epic video.

      Some places the green understory of Bush and trees needs thinned out and cut to promote larger tree growth and less basil stem competition and recruitment. There's places where "destroying the forest" actually is beneficial in keeping it healthy and vibrant and promoting habitat.

      His way of going about bushcrafting is very Nordic, which is a given since i believe he is from Finland, and they have a right to roam that works pretty much exactly the same as in my own country of Norway. cutting live trees for firewood when on a bushcraft hike for example is illegal in both countries (though laws and regulations can be circumvented with landowners permission), and at least here when i grew up were taught at a young age to treat nature with respect and to leave it the way you found it; as if you were never there.

    The classic expedient survival shelter for the boreal.
    I greatly appreciate the use of augers and pins, a practice catching on like wildfire among bushcrafters. It is so good because parachute cord should always be "special use". For emergency or intractable points of construction tarred bankline is superior, being less obtrusive. No cordage at all rules. But the spruce roots are a legendary source of cordage in the boreal. I have yet to see their use demonstrated here among our many Nordic practitioners. I can image that stripping them up from the ground would be environmentally damaging, and may be prohibited in some countries. In the US we have very strict regulations regarding uses of public lands by campers. Building of shelters is strictly prohibited, as is cutting off green wood without a specific permit. To practice bushcraft construction here one really needs to be on private land.

    • @jonathanstein1783
      @jonathanstein1783 Год назад +1

      In a true survival situation it wouldn't matter if you were on public lands or not. If I were jailed for building a shelter, at least I wouldn't be freezing to death. (Or that's what one would hope for)!

    • @Tipi_Dan
      @Tipi_Dan Год назад

      @@jonathanstein1783 Yes, but these practitioners in RUclips videos are not in "true survival situations", they are conducting demonstrations. I am interested in what sorts of lands they are on--- private or public. I want to know about camping regulations outside the US. Such is rarely discussed by international bushcrafters, excepting those from Great Britain..

      @@Tipi_Dan - I'm living in Germany, and here we are strictly regulated as well.
      In short: you are allowed to walk on existing paths, enjoy nature and pick mushrooms and berries in small amounts. For everything else you need permission by the forest wardens. So, bushcrafting in Germany will reduce to your own backyard, if you don't get permission.

    As another poster wrote, adding a fire reflector would send a lot of wasted heat into your shelter. And for winter cold, a lowered roofline would make the smaller interior heat more easily. And stick some insulating branches or even mud into that windy side panel that is blowing through.

    Was it Blackfoot at 6:25 - fallen trees is a good indicator. And, where is your hatchet from, please?
    Last, may I suggest:
    1) Using a wooden stick as a hammer or carve out one, I feel very sorry for your hatchet - it's a really good one. 2)The fire is best to be made before it gets dark for your safety and rocks heated in advance - to test if one explodes and to make a heat wall for you. 3)A tarp and poncho can save your life, and you could improvise and incorporate the elements around you, a shelter in trees, for example ?4) A metal cup hanging on a belt so a bear can hear you coming. Awesome camping - stay safe and cheers !

    Why did you make that A-frame for your shelter when you could have used two trees in the forest? I’m confused as to why you made the shelter out in the open instead of in the shelter of the forest! Would have made much better sense, used less resources and taken less energy. Also, those pegs you’re using are liable to brake. You’re better or masking it with either or a cord or spruce roots.

    Quand meme j'ai fait suffisamment de feux ppur penser que vous êtes bien imprudent de couper.aussi peu de bois le soir. Et de laisser le feu s'éteindre la nuit ! Vouswavezxeu de la chance que la neige ne tombe pas plus tôt !

    😂 if you didn't stay warm, who uploaded the video assuming your actually in the woods? This title is doing you no justice.

    Sorry, but this seems like a lot of work for a not super insulated / rain proof shelter. I've no experience with bushcrafting myself, but I've seen a lot of guys do a lot more with a lot less.

    Young man, you keep swinging that hatchet towards you and your going to seriously cut into a body part. You might bleed to death before help can get to you. Great build but don’t chop towards your legs or body. Basic cutting skills 101.

    So if your were stuck here, I suggest you would be on the run?
    Therefore dig a pit under a big bush, light fire in it, when its out dump evergreen pines in it, cover hole with branches?
    The shelter you have here is like a house.
    aka "You're a carpenter on the run after they said that all wood is illegal."
    And we all know carpenters should be mathmatically smart...
    I like to think this is when the carpenter had secured food and is in like the remote canadian wilderness and not the first thing he did.

    Con el respeto pero tú con esa madera hace un refugio mucho mejor si es posible buscar cuatro árboles firme para levantar las paredes

    Yeah that's cute, the shelter had nothing at all to do with you staying warm. It was the polar bear hide that you laid your multiple wool blankets on top of and your thermal Arctic grade sleeping bag on top of that. The shelter did absolutely nothing to keep you warm. Be realistic

    A thin plastic sheet to hang over the opening would have made a world of difference without adding weight or bulk to your backpack.

    Why can’t you carry a camping tent instead spending hours on shelter construction. And a small camping stove.
