I'm well acquainted with Saginaw, I live just 9 miles north, and have worked there on many occasions.
Though the population size and poverty rates are similar, shootings rarely occur in my town, and when they do it's typically spillover from Saginaw.
Where I live the murder rate is 3 for every 100,000. The last time someone was murdered here was May 24, 2021, when men from Saginaw came here to shoot a rival.
Saginaw already had 3 murders for the year by January 4 2024.
Though murders in Saginaw were down in 2023 from previous years, that might be just due to poor aim, since there was an steep uptick in shootings.
