    Thank you so much for making this video!!! I just sold a 12 meter kite because it wasn't producing any power. I never even considered to see if the lines on the bar were even. I just assumed they were. Come to find out the back lines were on the wrong knot setting and were too long by a foot!! It took only two seconds to move them up three knots closer to the bar. You're a life saver man.

    Super useful, indeed Cabrinha always provide pigtails whereas other brands just expect you “to know” although many bars brand new come without instructions or explanations for tuning are nowhere on the whole wide web. I was hoping the vid also talks about line length - and the difference it makes to flying, in different winds, and for different disciplines or speed v turning v power v handling v drift etc.

      There's adjustment at the floaters level tho (on a few brands bars too I think)

    I noticed about (only) 2-3cm shorter backlines last season, adjusted them via floater, and that made a whole lot difference to the kite's steering agility.

    Front lines carry 80% of the load, so they stretch faster than the back lines.
    This means you must be sheeting out or depowering just to keep the kite flying.
    And, the line attached to the safety release gets stretched more than any.
    Many kiters complain about how their kite isn't handling well, and when we tie the lines to a tree, they find that all 4 are different lengths - sometimes by 10 - 20 cm.
    This is like driving a car with all the tires out of alignment.

    • @EpicGust
      @EpicGust  4 месяца назад +1

      Hey Stein! From CR right? hope so!
      Thanks for your input! I thought the same, yet some kite designers taught me on the following- those lines are pre streched, so they cant get much longer if any. They told me that the line thread can collect debris and that will stuck there forever (unless washingmachine treatment that is yet to be tested) making those lines shorter, and this is mostly happening to the steering lines.
      I really want to debunk this but have no 24m tall building next to me where i can hang up something heavy for a week to see if they really stretch or what :) anyways, as always, interesting topic!

    • @steinerikgabrielsen2988
      @steinerikgabrielsen2988 4 месяца назад +1

      @@EpicGust Yes, they are "pre-stretched" but that doesn't prevent more stretching.
      I say this because kiters routinely ask me why their kite isn't flying right, and when we check the lines, they are usually different lengths.
      After 24 years of teachingkiteboarding, I trust what I see first hand, and consider propaganda from the manufacturers to be just that - propaganda.
      BTW, bridles stretch too, and they're more difficult to correct.

    Want to add an interesting comment - at the intro where the "size does matter" sign appears on that white pole - that white pole is not straight you notice for sure. It is a leg of a gazebo, and it used to be straight before the last hurricane. Crazy huh? I glad it stayed in place!

  • @kitingholger9826
    @kitingholger9826 5 лет назад

    In my case typically the back lines are a bit shorter. I think it’s not clear to many people that we are not talking about line stretching but line shrinkage. One can stretch the lines by adjusting each line to a solid fixed position and then just pull the line until it has equal length again.

    • @EpicGust
      @EpicGust  5 лет назад +1

      There is a dark joke about this:
      Life is fair. The one who has one leg a bit shorter, at least one's other leg is longer.
      Shrinking or stretching? In the end, the ratio is what matter. (btw are you sure that the lines aren't stretch after jumps and loops and load of weight all the time but shrink? doesn't seem legit for the first sight!)
      Watch out with that pulling thing! Lines may look like they stretch but the play is small. If you manage to stretch a line like 5cm (That's a lot!) Than expect it to shrink back till a point at least - so it won't stay 5cm longer! Small stretch can be reached tho as permanent.

    • @kitingholger9826
      @kitingholger9826 5 лет назад

      In my case backlines shrink less when I’m jumping a lot. But the fact about shrinking was told to my by the tech guys from Corekiteboarding. Maybe there is also an impact of kite loops etc on stretching, but what seemed logic to me is the fact that the structure of the braided lines can open when winded around the bar and in some other instances, which makes them shorter.
      In any case you are making an excellent point in regularly checking line length to be equal 🤙🏼😎🏄🏽‍♂️🦇😄

    hi, I have the impression that sailing with short lines allows sailing With more speed when crossing the wind, what do you think? Does short lines make sailing more efficient?

    • @EpicGust
      @EpicGust  2 года назад +1

      HI Mateus! Iteresting question! One thing is sure, shorter lines reducing the wind window, therefore the kite can pick up less speed due the less possible space to travel from 12 to the water or from 10 to 2 oclock. Yet what you saying is often used in race foiling - shorter lines give direct feeling and if you ride such an efficient thing like a hydrofoil, then you dont need the bigger wind window. I think they using short lines to reduce the drag of the lines. The drag makes the kite fly deeper in the window and giving the lines a belly. Longer lines more drag, shorter lines less drag. This is super visible if you ride on 30-40-or even 100m lines. On such lines the kite will never be above you it will always stay much more forward even if just parked on 12, duue to this drag. Short lines minimizing the effect of this, a bit like having rigid stick instead of lines, so they are always fully stretched. In the big sailing cups - like america cup, they use rigid sails. that is somewhat comes back to the same idea, that a soft sail has this looser profile, and a rigid is much more efficient - like an airplane wing. Of course that is not the same in kiting but it has similar effect on the outcome - i believe! What do you think?

    • @EpicGust
      @EpicGust  3 года назад +1

      If thats on the trailing edge - that sort of normal. old north kites, duotone, some fone does the same. not great, it is a sign of usage and wear but still ok. happens cos the material got streched there. by letting it flapping on the beach or getting dragged by waves. so generally do not stress, keep your lines EVEN and that will make the fly as good as possible. making it stall by shortening the backlines might stop this flapping, yet will cause other problems = owersheeting.
