Kitesurfing jump basics - The Pop
Jumping with a kite is a sequence of well-executed and timed steps. The chance that you will learn it in 1 hour is little to none. Braking the kitesurfing jump down this way allows you to learn a better foundation. This way you will never have to come back to re-learn the basics. Take lessons for each new thing you wish to learn to avoid years of bad habits.

Kitesurfing basics - the active rider
Просмотров 11 тыс.Месяц назад
Are you an active rider or a passive rider? Unfortunately, not many talks about this online - nor in real-life lessons. So many kiters are stuck in the passive kiter zone for years, if not forever. I try my best to teach all my students as early as possible to be active, so I do it to you, too! This is not a light wind technique. This is a way to maximise the power you can have. I am often on a...

What do you mean season, we kite all year, but yes definitely check your lines a couple of times a year and when buying a new bar, check them after a few sessions 🤙
Maybe he only has one kite.
@@george4260 would that be a good excuse if he loses his edge , crashes and tangles his lines around you putting you in danger?
Morpheus? Is that you...?
At a very windy day, where I am well powered on my 7 meter kite, there is on a very busy kitespot usually that one guy attached to a 13.5 meter big Edge. 😂
I am glad you see this the same way. 🙌
I'm usually the guy on the biggest kite. I struggle to understand why everyone else thinks riding under powered is fun? They all have smaller kites, and yet I'm the one looping. I don't get it.
@@HelpMeObiwan1 I don’t get what is fun on riding brutally overpowered. If you like that kind of fight for survival kite sessions, then enjoy it. I remember to have been also on a 14m kite in about 22 knots. I had the biggest kite under the riders out there with my 68 kg. Wasn’t really fun at all. But it is not comparable to being in 40 gust 55 knots wind on a 5 meter kite. That is really dead brutal.
@@HelpMeObiwan1 Also don’t forget there is that point where the wind will lift you out of the water as soon as you bring the kite over you, and that with bar out, fully depowered. You will get in that situation much earlier than the others with their smaller kites.
Your awesome!!! Thank you
This is very interresting. Could you give me some tips regarding edging and reaching. When I am well powered I go upwind like crazy!!! I want to get more speed instead of going upwind.
can you help me find another one too :)
Board or gf?? 😜
Yeah right your leaving People lie 40 min in the water
@@galacticorbit9311 huh? help me and others to understand you.
You didn't mention looping the kite
@@s2oooo no 😂 how could i miss that out? Is that your favourite move too?? I love it sooo much. Full on addicted to it 😇
@EpicGust still trying to land a mega loop on a hydrofoil 🙈. Family & kids have stopped me practicing 😔
@ i respect that
Az igen, hajrá!!!!
10k€... 3 Boards and Kites plus 3 wetsuits. I ride in Winter too (4degrees Celsius). Since I am old and the bones are already bad, I dont need to progress a lot... Cheers
@@donronaldo5454 do you count in knowledge that will keep your knees safe for longer? Cos thats something you can learn too! Progression is not always about going higher or sending crazy tricks. It is about having better and deeper understanding of the what to do, why to do and how to do. Makes you be more efficient and more graceful 🙌 consider that!
Basketball analogy is spot on! I'm surprised no one has brought it up earlier :P Still, I think the best take away is that it's worth to have someone watch you riding once a while to prevent aggregating bad habits, that ultimately lead to lost time and motivation when trying to learn something more advanced.
Such a good summary. I will save it for later :) Thanks for the input! Yeah, I showed this to one of my recent clients, and he said that the in-person lesson helped him way more. This tutorial leads you, but if you already have some habits to overcome, you need personalization. We are all different!
Plus it looks so much better, keep it stylish
Keep it stylish 🙌😂
😂😂😂 Poor understanding of how a kite is flying...
What do you mean by that @ricophi2
@EpicGust I mean that instructors are not properly explaining to students that adding more power to the kite does not mean that the kite is flying better! It is important to understand properly concept ofnthe angle of attack and know there is a limit to adding "more power"
@@ricophi2 i am fully with you on that. The whole kite teaching is focused on riding itself and nothing more. I am keen to change it! Are you an instructor too?
Awesome 👍
@@expert7383 are you already in brazil?
Thanks best info I have watch sofar !
thanks mate this really inspires me to get my other toughts out too!
I was about to comment that "the best pop tutorial ever" but then noticed there are so many of those comments already thait desiced only to comment this is "Epic tutorial for beginners and also for advanced riders." Been a subscriber of your channel for a long time and you are in my Top 3 channels I actually wait to see publish new content. Also mad props for keeping the content in kitesurfing, and not mixing it with winging or pump foiling...
I Appreciate this so much! Thank you!
Plenty of Geoffs out there, though a lot of them are switching to foils😊
@@freddydad1 not sure i am getting what you saying 🙃 can you clarify?
@EpicGust only that I see a lot of people that struggle to kite actively on a twin tip, a lot of these have moved to foils in my area.
@@freddydad1 i see. interesting as foiling is much more skillfull. I think the active passive video can convert anyone in a session to active rider. Thats not related to strength, it is a skill. For example tiny kids do ride actively straight away cos if they being pulled by the kite, they just lose line tension, so sort of they have to do this otherwise no success!
Best pop tutorial ever !!! 💪Will work this intensively at my next session !!! Thanks so much !
Awesome! Thank you! 🙏 let me know how it goes!!
Zolty I tried what you explained but still not working for me. Can i send a video of my effort so you can take a look at it. And I’m willing to pay for you One on One advice (also for my further progression). What do you think?
I am in - lets do it show me the foootage theepicgust@gmail.com
Hey I am unclear about a couple of parts. When you say go upwind just before coming up. Do you mean my shoulders should point upwind just before coming up. And when you do the hop, you mean to extend your back legs and push off, do you also retract your front leg?
Lets see if you can answer your questions just by answering these- As you come up from the active riding and your legs gets under you, correct - you push off with the back leg- is this going to move the board upwind itself? how is the front leg at that point? The tumbnail is the moment we talk about so all this is visible there in the moment. Now give me those answers!
@@EpicGust Tomorrow I will go kitesurfing I will try to implement what you said, and I will get back to you.
Thanks man, good content as usual ! 😊
Appreciate that, glad you liked it! 🙌
That is great content ! Could you continue with the timing of the jump : - when to send the kite and pop (at the same time, one before the other....) - when to pop : when the kite is at 12, a little bit before or after - when to pull the bar : when you leave the water or before - the position of the kite : right at 12 above your head or a little bit in front of you (in the wind windows). Thanks a lot and keep going with your great work!!!
Good questions thanks!
@@Baptiste_L all my questions in this comment. My takeoffs are okay, I was able to get sent to 7-8 meters with my 9 on the famous 30 kts winds of Maui (yes I felt overpowered lol) however I had to jump with a kicker wave, I think I need to carve upwind more. However when overpowered the kite pulls so much is hard so sit lower in the harness rly quickly
@@gillesbkf4315 So you just explained the most common mistake. I jump around the same height on my 7 in 20 knots! Learning how to get that peak power with progressive edging and bar sheeting out, and creating that power instead just pulling the bar is key. a lot on my mind. more videos are coming!
Kiting is far from a new sport. FlexiFoil has been making super high quality power kites to surf with since the 1970s.
nice!
Thanks!
Spot looks epic And great explanation 🤙
Glad you liked it!
Wow !! I am a subscriber now !! ❤
Welcome to the crew! Glad you liked it!
thats exactly what i always tell my students love seeing my students being the only ones riding when all others have too little power while we are out there having fun
Epic tutorial 🤝🤝😎
Never siezes to disappoint 🤣🙌
I started kiting only 5 months ago and this is my main issue now to be able to progress further with jumps. Can you explain what you do with the other leg? Are you pushing or pulling with it? How about poping in chopping water when it's so hard to hold the edge?
I can but probably with all the possible variations that you doing it will be as long as an essay… what about you send me a video of your pop and i tell what to do with it?
Thanks, needed. 😂🎉😊
You’re welcome 😊
Epic Tips bro!

Glad you like them! 🙌
Very interesting. I will think about that in my next session!
Go for it! Let me know after!!
Takeaway: The wind is free, it's an affordable sport
@@whateverwhatever18 thats what we all tell to ourselves 😂 whatever 😉
Ive been kiting since 2003, and i had never heard these terms in kiting, i think everyone starts there session in active and at he end of the session they are getting passive, just getting tired. One way to tell if you are active if you are going upwind bettter than the other riders. Larry
@@leapnlarry hey Larry thanks for your input. These are definitely new for many folks, but as the sport grows and we put more effort into understanding beginners mistakes (not the full beginners after waterstart but everyone who cant jump over 5 m on a consistent basis) and the ways these can be learned, these new terms will rise. In teaching this sport these terms helps for more riders to understand the concept, instead of using more vague terms or waiting years tilI they feel it naturally. Let me challenge your belief- just watch the riders on your spot at the next session and see how big of a wave they have after their boards. I think you will surprised that 70-80 % is riding passively most of the time. Missing the advantage that the proper active riding can give to them.
make sense. I will try it next time when I am on the water. Thanks for the tip.
You got it! Let me know how it goes! ‼️
Seen you at Stintino last week but was to afraid to ask you some questions… I really like your videos👍🏻 see you on the water🤙🏻
damn! i wish you did! thats hilarious :)) what made you afraid? do i look scary?? :D Super nice spot, I didn't expect that much wind and I was just strolling with the fam, so I skipped kiting. (also i had no gear with me ) There was a guy with a core kite keep trying and failing to get out, and i felt really sorry for him, so I decided to try to give him a tip if he came out next. he literally should have turn to active earlier to be able to keep the power, and he would have make it. thats it. but after 30m i gave up waiting :) it is so hard when i see them, and i want to help, cos not everybody takesa tip wellp in my experienec,e it is thin ice :)
