There is one topic in kitesurfing that still so many riders get wrong! And this topic is about the knots on your kite line connectors. Which knot to use on your kite to connect your lines? More power? Less power? Why would you choose less? This video explains the why and the what! I made some examples to give you a better understanding! Enjoy!

Really well explained, been kiting 5 years and this still had value to me, you have another subscriber. Peace.
WOw cool thank you! Feels good and keeps me rolling! :) Welcome among the epic riders :))
This is the best explanation about the knots. No BS. The real deal.
Thank Bruce! I generally hate BS and faff 😅😂
I could listen to this guy all day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
come, work with me!
Really useful video. Made this mistake time and time again on a lighter wind day and couldn't work out why my 12 was falling out the sky when others were having a great session on the same kite size
We all made it at one point i guess :)) Thanks!
Bravo. Glad to hear someone explain this correctly. Like you stated the knots are simply a fine trim. The kite should always be trimmed for the conditions of the day so it wont back stall with the bar completely in. For beginners and light wind conditions more depower trim is better.
I am glad that out there someone else having such knowledge too!
So wanna meet this DUDE! So true.
Come to Brazil this winter
Loved it! especially explanation for dummies! More wind= more power! Fantastic video, keep it going!
i really like this guy , i have all the times to explain to my students about all this topics
Thanks! Keep rockin'!
My kite boarding journey started about a month ago. I've come from windsurfing to see what this sport is all about.... So far so good 🤙..... Keep the knowledge following, I like your style.
Welcome aboard! thanks, i will do my best, and appreciate and feedback in the future!
So glad to see your videos!!! You were an amazing instructor so happy to continue learning via your videos 😍
Very useful tips
Glad you liked it
Perfect... I have shared your video on our group(near Tampa)... I just added, make sure your 4 lines are equal, then apply what "Epic gust" says...
thanks for sharing! Yeah, lines must be equal!
Cool! I just always fly stock settings because it gives me the best kite feel and feedback.
The point is the conditions might mean that the stock setting makes the kite not perform optimally.
I love when the community answers so well! Thanks Andy.
I think many people don't realise this. A good way to check if the knots are wrong in low wind is to launch the kite, fully sheet in the bar and wait and see what the kite does. If it fully reverses and falls out the sky, take the tension out of the back lines by using the other knots, maybe trim the depower so the kite is always flying forwards.
exactly, best tip ever!
I love these guy … great tips and very useful video
Thanks bro 👍 nice to see you here too!
That accent is ur... confusing, but the information is top notch! 😊 Very very useful. Thanks!
sorry dude, hope you can cope with my accent. Shall i change it to french?
Yet again super informative and well presented explanations. I particularly like your (not so obvious) recommendation for light wind.
One point I was waiting for you to mention more directly is that fine-tuning naturally comes after a base trim.
For example, what often happens is that the front lines stretch more, relative to the back lines, with usage over time. This amplifies the effect you talk about (backstalling tendency, particularly using 'power' knot), and changing to a different knot is more compensating a wrong base trim than fine-tuning in these cases.
Aloha & keep it up, Epic Gust!
HEy @Ice Ace! THnaks for your input!
Line length tuning will be in the other video that is planned so the story will be full. I believe the knots in many cases - especially when you chose them by connecting it to the kite it doesn't mean to be the solution for the stretched lines ( if that would be then you lost the fine-tuning options on the pigtails) . You fix the line length in a different way. When you have the tuning options under the floater, this can be an easy fix for the stretched lines tho! But again then you sacrificed your fine tuning! what i am saying is that line length fix comes first, then than you can connect with the fine tune, and finally you adjust on the depower.
That was the best explanation - Rocking good Mate!
Thanks bud! Appreciated!
Thanks for the good info, I am new to the sport and can and will, use all the help I can get !! I have been guilty of using the wrong knot in light wind thinking it would help but it did just as you said it would, it made the kite want to back stalla lot easier..You have a new subscriber..
Thanks, bro! Welcome here! 👊
Precisely this! Wasn't sure so I used the middle knot and moved the kite A LOT more. Was out on a 9m when everyone else was using an 11m or 13m - stoked!!
I glad you manage it so well! Lets spread some knowledge for the always "there-is-not-enough-power" - guys! :D
I always ride the most power setting. You definitely have to be concerned with back stalling a lot more but I feel like it helps me to get better feedback from the kite and feel where it is in the wind window without looking at it
can be like this for you! My experience from teaching beginners, and seeing people struggle all around the world that you do a favor for yourself with the method mentioned. By learning the right way - aka move the kite more aggressive for more power instead of pulling the bar and hope for the best :)
Another Epic Gust of kite knowledge. Well done!
thank you!!
Sooo good! Thank you!
Cool explanation, thx man !
I am happy to serve!
Really useful video Zoltan! Thanks again!
Thanks dude!!
Great tutorial. Thx!
Funny to see how similar toy "kites", paraglider wings, and kiteboarding kites are. Even trims are very similar. Differences seem mostly about the application (launch, wet/dry).
Thanks for breaking this down so well.
If you think about - they are all the same: wings!
@@EpicGust Fun to recall my perspective back then, just getting into paragliders 😁
@@MichaelRainabbaRichardson congratulations. This is Def next level. I will do it one day too. Had already some ground handling and felt very familiar.
Zultan! Awesome video man. Nice meeting you in Turks and and Caicos.
Ha! World is small huh? Was nice to meet you guys too! Keep kiting! :DD
Awesome guys!!!
Thanks bro! :)
Great session , way cool man.
Thanks Anthony!
Ihave several different kites and brands in my quiver. All kites are set up fast turning and high power .😊 . If i need more power i will switch to a bigger kite simple
just keep it simple. :D
Hey kiters! Add your input about the topic! What is your opinion? Did you use it the right way?
Finaly some one talk about when to use the more power knot
Go big or go home :) But mostly dont use it :)
yes.
I allways use the most powered setting, you can allways depower it. The other way around is not possible, to power it up even more
can do but this way you losing at the depower side of the kite. above 30 kn maybe thats a less ideal policy?
if you need to depower the kite that much, its time for a smaller kite or stop kiting
Then only one mystery left. Why kite brands who designed them give us an option for this?
@@EpicGust because they better be on the safe side. I mean lets be honnest, a fully depowered kite flys like shit
@@egbert1985 correct for a certain riding discipline I agree too, yet often when the wind pick up it is a nice way to just cruse with minimal kite input. Lately I am out often in 40-50 knots, and when it is on the higher end I fully depower my 7m and cruse way upwind. When the wind goes back to normal I take away some trim and go big.
Similarly: just because you use the first or the 6th gear on your car the least(again depending on your driving environment) they are not useless.
Zajebiste! :) nic guide! Thanks!
you are welcome!
Helpful
thats good!
Does this work with the North or Duo kites that have the pigtails on the kite
North/DUotone doesn't have the option on the end of the lines. On the normal bar they had it under the floaters, to reach them you have to open the end of the bar (small plastic thingy that usually breaks after a few season) and there you will see the same thing. Although I believe they meant it for line adjustment for stretched front lines. On the Click bar? no idea! Anyone? I have ZIAN Kite, also missing those options. i put extra pigtails to have them! :) ( make sure if you do it add to every line the same length so they will stay even) Video about the line adjustment coming soon! :)
Hey, my bar has 2 knots and my kites have 3. How do the knots on the kite change the game?
The knots you talking about are the knots explained in the video. Kite knots is to adjust settings to the session, knots on the bar side should be fixing uneven lines. 🤙😎
I agree with 1&3.
2. Light wind use the less power option and move the kite harder... how to move kite harder if there is no tension on back lines?
Hmm good question!
I can be mistaken, and I am keen to learn and ponder about topics like this! My opinion is from my 10 years kite journey so far is this:
It is still possible to move the kite hard enough. Your kite will make a slightly bigger radius and that's what you looking for too. And harder means that really all in. From 11 to the right and deep as possible in the window, many times. TIll the kite moves, it pulls. Once it stalls it stop pulling you.
What do you think?
@@EpicGust
Hmm I think if there is light wind it's better to swap kite with bigger one ;)
Of course when light wind comes, extension of back lane helps keeping kite in the air and prevents from backstalling. It should be done by depower strap which makes front lines shorter.
Summary : I wouldn't say that less power connection point helps keeping kiting in lighter wind.
BTW - good content of your video 👍
@@kitelife_pl_kiteboarding Thanks! :)
Yeah that could be a good option to use just depower! but that seems even more unobvious when people keen for that MORE power :) Extending all the lines can also come in to the picture!
Not sure I agree with everything in this video. There’s no mention about lengthening your back lines (end knot on the pigtail) when riding in high wind to take some power out of the sail and therefore bring some ‘depower’ trim back to the bar to the kite. Conversely, shorten the back lines in light wind so that the kite collects more wind to propel you but this demands you keep the kite moving to maintain lift. If it starts to backstall, reach forward and pull in half a meter of front/centre line to regain lift, then get the kite moving forward again in sweeping power curves.
Hey Nick! Thanks for your input! At 4:43 of the video and you will see mentioning it. So watch closely next time bud! :) Stated there as well, in those conditions that knot won't change much it is better to drop the kite size! I had a full season of experiencing that is not working well, in CostaRica 30-50 knots, kind of different planet conditions. If you can't hold on to your kite, the knot won't save you. And less power knot + full depower will make your lines so slack that the kite won't turn properly anymore. Had trouble because of it. We want a responsive thing above us in those conditions! Whole better options to change the board size to smaller also to drop the line length to 19m.
Shortening the back lines in the low wind will cause backstall, and unfortunately, that is not collecting more wind. You generate apparent wind through the move but if your wing won't fly you can't move it. If it starts to backstall, you moved it wrong (too light up etc)or there was a wind hole etc. Your goal is to keep the consistency in the move and not to reach anything close to backstall! REaching out to the front lines and pull them are good solution saving a falling kite when you are stationary, but not the thing you do while you riding. It has to work with simply sheeting out on the way up and leaning back at the same time. You want to look good while kiting not like an electro shocked back and forward shaking someone! :D Keep your dignity! :D JK! HAve a good one and let me know what you think! Peace out!
I've seen so many people make this mistake. and then they get frustrated when their kite doesn't stay up when in light wind with high power setting
hopefully they will watch this video!
it looks like your in the turks and caicos?
At the moment, yes! :) are you here too?
Yes, I agree with all of it, but you left out one detail. All of this only works with a properly tuned bar and lines, if power lines have stretched, all this goes out the window
sure, same if the kite leaking, same if the kite ripped and has a big hole, even the same if one line is broken, all this goes to the garbage! It is like saying you can't drive the car unless it has 4 wheels! Somehow I assumed that factors are OK!
Video coming about the lines too. We agree that this is both important. First, you get a kite (like newish at least) you get out, after a season of kiting you check those lines too! :) On a 2009 Crossbow it will go the other way around!
Okay, sorry for commenting dude, it won't happen again
@@dajobra I think you got something wrong here :) your comments are more then welcome! And from your suggestion, I will do one vid about the correct line lengths too! Thanks for that!
@@dajobra I just tried to be a funny guy I guess :D Too bad it didn't went trough! :)
@@EpicGust I got the humor :) Are you saying that the back lines stretch on the crossbow? I'm just learning about kiteboarding so I'm taking in info and know nothing about it. I have been flying kites 30+ years, gliding 3+ and flying paramotors for ~1 year and I like to experiment on occasion ( ruclips.net/video/q0mdZNxfQhQ/видео.html ) though.
Dude it's far more important to tell people how to adjust there lines. Because all of this means nothing if the lines have stretched.
True dat! Here we assuming that the lenght of the lines are correct. VIdeo coming to fix the line length problem. These two topics walk hand by hand. :)
Lines shrink, they normally dont stretch
Of course, I agree about "if the lines have stretched". Often the fabric of the kite have stretched as well. As for me, I'd rather set up a kite (in light wind condition, about 8 knot) for "light" backstole (in other words, the kite does not fall, but it is already ready to fall). And as rule, it is perfect for all conditions.
If your lines are stretching, you have a problem. They normally dont get any longer. They are pre-tensioned at the factory which stretches them as much as they are going to stetch, to make sure they are up to par with strength requirements (liability reasons). What can happen is swelling, which essentially shortens them. There are a number of factors here from actual material swelling to foreign particle buildup that makes the braid spread out a bit. That also weakens the braid's yield, which is why its important to make sure the lines are rinsed off after a session. The salt crystals can actually become abrasive, as well as the sand. If your lines are stretching out, chances are you have severe abrasions in some sections and this has caused some thread bundles to break, allowing the braid to tighten and thus lengthen the line, which is very dangerous. Either way, if they have changed length at all, its time to replace them, period. A few bills on a new set of lines is cheaper than a hospital visit.
Lol
All fine until you made comparison with windsurfing, us too can depower the sail, thus going faster o slower as we see it fit, not to mention that the adrenaline we experience is waaaaay better than yours, since we properly control and govern the speed right with ours hands, rather than simply being left hanging there with few physic laws actually coming in action....soorrryyyy
:DD the comparison was only between the moving sail and the stationary. That makes us enjoy lighter winds that hard to enjoy on windsurf. Now with the foil is changing i guess! No doubt, not many of us has the balls of Robby Naish on a wave with a windsurf :) But the point is never to comparison sports. I tried not to! :)
no worries , I was just teasing a bit, you kiters are our fellow cousins, you do have same lust for wind, planning and all, have fun out there than, peace @@EpicGust
@@markolovis Loved it :D I think the same, there is wind for all! PEace!
@@EpicGust yep, thats one thing I really envy about you guys, you can go with 8 knts as well...I guess
