Some people are calling this satire. I disagree. This is a pretty straight condemnation of the lies American society sold people, especially millenials, and how we now we have to deal with the shitty aftermath of coping with our shattered dreams. This is haunting as hell.
The laugh track is a pretty amazing parallel to how we try to cope with our meaningless lives with drugs. Humor as a neutralizing agent. We try to laugh it off, but the pain is still eating us until we're hollow.
+Devilwing Productions I have never felt the need to thumbs up a RUclips comment before.
+Flowergirl7 7 in his own words, the laugh track is to neutralize the pain of the ideas. Also, if you think those are just white people problems, or first world problems, that's really concerning. They're legitimate issues that have alienated millennials from the world.
+Flowergirl7 7 So? Having debt in this country will destroy you. Being drugged up will too. And you don't even get anythjng out of it because your education is useless. You really need some perspective. Things don't need to be Africa bad to be bad, you can still suffer miserably even though you have food and shelter.
The laugh track was used to neutralize the pain of the idea. I already told you, this is straight from Misty himself. It's not satire, sorry. These are serious, sincere problems, and the fact that people can't grasp this shows how out of touch they are with millennials.
And how deprived of guidance and help they are.
+Flowergirl7 7 like seriously, calling higher education a "luxury" when it's the thing that offers you nothing and destroys your life in this country is ridiculous.
+Devilwing Productions Higher education does brings many opportunities, especially when it comes to types of employment. The question is whether or not it's worth the stress, lack of sleep that many endure, years spent, and possible debt.
The laugh track reminded me of that scene in Requiem for a Dream, when the lady hallucinates and goes crazy, with the crowd cheering in the background. Like having a panic attack and being really sad at the same time. I think the song is brilliant.
Dan Friedenberg Totally! I see it! I've seen this movie and listened to the lyrics to this song, and I can actually kind of see a conncection. Cool! Thanks!
My first time I took LSD I was having an existential crisis and I was hallucinating the sounds of people laughing at me. It reminds me of that part of this song also.
Ah yes, good to see absolutely nothing has changed in the six years since this song came out
Right 😢
Lmao
When we are all gone it will
Except the subprime loan.... you can rent now
Comment still relevant ... 6/24/22
its 4am and my melancholy is incomplete without this song.
:] its 6am and we have made no further progress...
It’s 800 now and I’m still listening with tears in my eyes
Today is tomorrow, now. It just started. I'm awfully glad.
"Is this the part where I get everything I wanted? Who said that?"
my favorite line
Can I get my money back?
Save us President Jesus...who'd think lyrics like that?! Brilliant songwriter
Feast your eyes, my friend, on genius.

Save me / President Jesus!
"The author, in feeling the plight of national issues of soaring debt and obsolescence, ironically turns to the president as if he is the Messiah to rescue him."
It's about how the country is ran by fundamentalist christians and how a lot of aspects of everyday life are influenced by religion, and how politics and the church go hand in hand.
it's almost like the president is Jesus himself.
Dark.
anyone with half a brain
Woody guethre, wilco, many others
Here we go, a voice of a generation.
+Fred Funk freaky feet
+Fred Funk uptown funk u up ;)
Exactly. This is a Millennial/Zoomer generational anthem.
Breaks my heart a little more every time I listen to it.
Honestly, one of the best songs I've heard in a very long time. Flat out awesome.
Thank you, Based John, thank you. I'm still listening to Fear Fun.
Giving Father John a try is by far my best decision of today, satirical yet strangely poignant song.
the laugh tracks are wonderful both thematically and musically
He has the capacity to reach a wide range of emotions, and when he does serious he really touches my soul. Actually, he does when he does satire too. Self-deprecation. Wisdom. Great work! John Grant can do this too!
I saw Mr Tillman last week here in Toronto, my 4th time, he always produces the goods and his interaction with the swine is second to none. I also love John Grant, you are spot on! Thank you
He's back! Oh, thank you, white Jesus!
White Antelope hasn't Jesus always been white? or did he catch a tan on his ten day trip to Jerusalem?
jesus was black. the seed of esua (who was red and wooly) was exiled to the cacuass mountains after selling his birthright to his brother jacob(later becoming israel). this is why whites are known as caucassians. its in the bible.
The Bible? Any other sources?
P.S. who gives a shit
Randy Miller III you apparently enough to reply
This song is amazing in so many ways, I love the darkness of it all.
This guy knows my soul. I need this album. Fantastic. How this flew under my radar for so long is beyond me.
Welcome!
my budgie pippin LOVES this song and chirps like crazy!!
It's my favorite song on the album. It's this totally unique mix of dark humor and heartcrushing melancholy
The laugh track and the style are VERY Roger Waters-esque to me, which is why I circle this song constantly this past year like a moth to a light bulb.
This is amazing! Father John Misty is a genius.
This song....wow...I've no words other than that it is a beautiful, soul jerking representation of how I feel about America right now.
This song is basically the prequel to Pure Comedy.
How many people rise and say
My brain's so awfully glad to be here for yet another mindless day
Now I've got all morning to obsessively accrue
A small nation of meaningful objects they've gotta represent me too
By this afternoon I'll live in debt
And by tomorrow be replaced by childrenHow many people rise and think
Oh good the stranger's body' s still here
Our arrangement hasn't changed
Now I've got a lifetime to consider all the ways
I grow more disappointing to you as my beauty warps and fades
I suspect you feel the same
When I was young I dreamt of a passionate obligation to a roommate
Is this the part where I get all I ever wanted
Who said that
Can I get my money back I'm just a little bored in the USA
Oh just a little bored in the USA
Save me white Jesus
Bored in the USA They gave me useless education
And a sub-prime loan on a craftsman home
Keep my prescriptions filled
And now I can't get off but I can kind of deal
Oh with being bored in the USA
Oh just a little bored in the USA
Save me president Jesus
I'm bored in the USA
How did it happen
Bored in the USA
This single, let alone one listen to this song gave me something i have never felt before listening to music in general. This song didn't feel like satire. It felt as if it was exactly showing me how I use humour, as a coping tool for shit that happens in anyones life. But anyways I'm probably just over assessing this shit or not.
IDK END OF COMMENT
more people need to know about this song its a masterpiece
i thought to me. WoW so refreshingly Depressing. right to the heart.
Brilliant, how many of us feel like this is constanly some small relief, thank you fjm.
Just wow! Great voice and song
So unique and musically inspiring!
A new favorite of mine. Great track.
Funny how this song hits different listening to it five years later ...
full on brilliant.
One of the best albums in the past 10 years
Divina cancion!
Oh, I get it, he wants us to rate the song like he does our favorite artist. I'm feeling a light 7 to a strong 8. Am I doing it correctly, Anthony?
So good. FJM never fails to amaze me
Wow! This is very beautiful
I feel this song attempting to capture the mood of the generation in the US and appreciate it. It reminds me of the songwriting of James Taylor, or Bruce Springsteen, in that the truths it is espousing are highly affected/colored by the writer's individual perception and reaction to them
I luv this song
Love it.
I needed to hear this, this is me right now
Finally seeing him live in Copenhagen Saturday 28 may. An ex-pat who came from his roots in Seattle
I fucking love your music Father John! It's completely beautiful.
OMG very very good musical. mantap pisan euyyy hade lah nyien laguna
Spot on xx
can't explain how glad I am, but can't say I wouldn't be happier if I heard fleet foxes were releasing something sooner than later..
They won't be. Hiatus while studying at Columbia.
Fred Funk technically Father JOhn Misty isn't a member of Fleet Foxes anymore. He is just ripping off their sound until they come back to reclaim that mantle...hopefully.
J.B. Chandler
is that a joke? They aren't very similar and i like Misty A lot more personally.
George Mcrogers they aren't very similar? You must've read the rollingstone review...saying it sounds like Steely Dan. BS. This guy is a former member of Fleet Foxes and It sounds enough like fleet foxes to warrant my comment.
George Mcrogers btw you are allowed to like Father John Misty more...he just sounds ALOT like Fleet Foxes.
I really got goosebumps :3
Reminds me of that scene in the Big Short where steve carrell's character speaks with the CDO manager at a las vegas restaurant. There's a laugh track throughout the scene as the CDO manager relates the absurdity and corruption inherent with his job.
I'll love FJM forever
How many people rise and think
"Oh good, the stranger's body's still here
Our arrangement hasn't changed"?
thank you
awesome
great.
Based Father of mine, thank you for all of your music.
Here cuz' Melanie interview
Really good song!
I am too haha
Me too lol
lol same
Same
Nailed it.
I didn’t realize the meaning in the lyrics of this song until I’d listened to it umpteen times.... but it speaks volumes to me as a supposed “millennial”... living through this highly anticipated lifestyle of going through the motions... matching up with someone, playing house, picturing things a certain way, committing to this “thing” you never really find out what the fuck it is... growing more & more bored with whatever that is... fuck. 🙏🏻💀
It reminds me of a Joshua Tillman song more than a FJM. Still, a lovely song!
It reminds me of a Don Mclean.
Lyrically not at all similar
Calin Constantin I totes agree. Babylon. I heard it too.
...you are all aware that Joshua Tillman IS Father John Misty, right??
TINY_TIGERS I think they mean in terms of tone and message it sounds more like something he would have recorded as J. Tillman rather than FJM. I agree with them, reminds me of his older work and I love it.
8 years later i still say "save me president jesus" all the time
why is it that the most amazing, talented songwriters are so criminally underrated?!!! I'm sick of the trash pop on the radio gahh
No one wants to look in the mirror or accept ugly truths
Gracias Papá
good song, sad song.
Artful deployment of the laughtrack.

This song is genius. I love Fleet Foxes but this is so dark yet strangely optimistic...dunno, can't find words...
👌
his instagram is so weird
Good to know I'm not the only one who goes on there...
a gonz Alhamdulillah
He is just really good I play guitar and the words he puts to the chords take it so deeper and darker sometimes only one other guy that did this to me he played the guitar in the same way dropped d guess who it was I’ll give u a clue he’s dead now😔
I think he sounds a bit like Elton John.
My thoughts exactly, and nothing wrong about it, especially with his lyrics.
eric krahn his voice is a lot like Elton but I'd say the lyrics are more Randy Newman or Harry Nilsson
He really does.
The most offensive thing I've ever heard 😥
so glad everything is better now haha
hah
Wow, this is real.
4:20 hehe
I listened to this song when I was in the cemetery
That "when you die" laugh though
Reminds me of Nilsson
The lyrics are very Nilsson-esque.
Nilsson is everywhere in his music!
I first noticed while listening to "Nancy From Now On," which is particularly Nilsson-y.
Anyone else hear Rocky Votolato? This sounds damn close at times.
I been listening too this dude for years. And this nigga gangsta. 🤷🏾♂️
Can anyone tell me the type of font used on 'Father John Misty' in the image above for the video? You would always see it used on old Christian vinyls and I'm curious what it is called.
Elton John, is that you?
Andrew Bird vibes
Came from a melanie martinez interview when she said this was one of her fav songs😂😂😭😭💙💙
Is the fact this is track 9/11 sheer coincidence?
nice catch there! that just adds to the already overwhelming comedy in the lyrics and sarcastic/derpy song inclusions
I see a lot of people I know in this song. Kinda like a delayed rejoinder to the 'Mats "Unsatisfied".
Just want to say, for anyone who really likes this song, and you haven't seen Bo Burnham's INSIDE, you should totally watch that. Falls in the same kind of style as this and is very good :) Not that I want to draw attention away from Father John Misty, I just want to help people find something else good to listen to/watch after this album :)
Strong disagree.
which font is this?
The original is far superior but I hear this one too.
This song so reminds me of "Monster Suicide America" by Steppenwolf. Seriously go check it out.
Holy shit I forgot about that song thanks for the reminder friend
so sad
Is this the Letterman performance audio recording? Or does the record version actually have a laugh track?
Pretty sure the album version has the laugh track. You can tell when watching the Letterman performance that the laughing isn't actually coming from the audience (listen to how they sound at the end when applauding as comparison).
This is the Studio Album Version. If you pre-order the album it comes with a download of this track. There's a video of a live performance from last year. The crowd laughs perfectly on cue.
yep ^
Prescient fjm
