When we were in Cuenca, I loved visiting the mercados. I was really tempted to try new things and thoroughly enjoyed the experiments. We especially loved the juices, hornado, and humita.
I love the Mercados. The hustle and bustle of people getting their goods for home or business...it's like listening to honeybees buzzing around. It's a beautiful thing. I love the sights and sounds of every Mercado we have been to. We want to try all the different fruits. We love the juices too. Eric wants to try the humitas...soon. I love that you did such a thorough view of the Mercado.... Most videos just do a short segment on it.
That was the first time we ever went through the whole Mercado. We usually just get our fruits and veggies and Erics cheese. So it was a nice adventure to see everything that the Mercado offers. Almost everything you would need is under that roof.

We love that mercado but you really need to shop around not to get Gringo'd! Our favorite items there are the Hornado plates and fresh juices. There are sweet breakfast tamales, too. November can't come soon enough for our next Cuenca visit. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tip!! Eric usually walks around and asks each one how much for whatever he's looking for and then he goes to get the lowest price product. We're both just learning spanish so I know I'm not real confident about bargaining. But I told myself next time I go I'm breaking out of my comfort zone and going to barter!! Cuenca is a beautiful city. It was a wonderful place to walk around. I stumbled upon the Sunrise Cafe on Calle Larga (my Airbnb was a few blocks to the west); I ate breakfast there 3 mornings. It was great to see so many Americans and Canadians gathered there each morning. I was not aware of this Mercado.

Cuenca es muy costoso, en comparación del resto de ciudades del Ecuador, ejemplo en Cuenca te vende un aguacate en 1 dólar en otras ciudades te venden 4 o 5 aguacates por un dólar, pero en el resto es un a Ciudad fantástica hermosa, gente muy culta..

It's safe... no worries. Muy tranquilo. People walk their dogs everywhere. I see this one guy (I'm going to say he's a dog walker) he walk about 10-12 dogs at the same time.
Great video. I was in Ecuador in 2019 and visited Cuenca which I loved. The Mercado which was in your video was fantastic. The produce is great at the mercado but I agree with you on the meats. I hope to visit Cuenca again next summer and I've also considered moving there since I'm now retired. Keep up the good work with your videos since they are so helpful for those of us who are considering moving there.

😂🤣 nice video guys the tamales and leaves was not tamales the name is pasteles de platano Verde that means green plantains cake is very delicious and that cheese callen Quesillo is Organics cheese no ingredients Only Salt and white vinegar that Quesillo came from native or indigenous people the was make that cheese with Salt and lemon juice 🤣 thanks for your videos guys 💝

You ought to do a video of the Gran Feria mercado on Las Americas near Remigio Crespo. It supplies all the other markets in the city. I've bought cheese from the same lady. Anything wrapped in plastic is $1.

I love the Mercados in Latin America and Cuenca in particular but the meat section I cannot take. The visuals and smell are too much. I think I saw some discomfort on Sandy’s face. Everything else, I love. So many varieties of fruit and veggies and they look so good. Now I know where I can get change. Thanks for another great video.
We love the Mercados...same with the meat section for me too. I tried not showing any discomfort... but my reactions most of the time are an open book.. 🤪🤪🫢🫢. My favorite area is where they sell all the herbs..the smell is just amazing walking up and down those aisles. You would think you wouldn't be able to smell them seeing they are so close to the kitchens. That change machine is a game changer. We love it. Thanks for watching and commenting. @@ericandsandy I am buying up sunscreen now with the prospect of moving there in the next year. I am a caregiver for my mother but by then she will be in a home unable to remember who I am. I can’t afford to live in Florida anymore so have done my research and Ecuador is my decision. Cuenca if I can handle the altitude. Lower Amazon region like Vilcabomba or Loja possibly. Will rent around for awhile short term to I find my neighborhood. But excited for a new adventure for sure!
I understand what it is like to be a caregiver to one of your parents. Sorry to hear about your mom. That is such a hard thing to go through. If you come to Cuenca for an exploratory trip...our first time here we started taking Altitude RX (we got it on Amazon) it worked very good until we got used to the altitude.
@@ericandsandy Thank You I already experienced altitude sickness when I was stationed in Denver so going to have the VA hook me up before I get there. I almost moved to Mexico until my parents decline but now I am sold on Ecuador. Dads 90 Moms 78 so hopefully in the next few yrs so I can enjoy it.
Good on you for taking care of your parents. It's a very hard job. When you do come to Ecuador.. if you come to Cuenca..start taking that altitude rx like a week before you get here and take it whe you're here too. Drink a lot of water, always at a high altitude. I drank a bunch in Gunnison and Crested Butte Co. It helps A LOT.

After watching a few I realized I could condition my liver by taking a shot every time the word "vegan" is said.
This was a mistake. At 2 minutes I ended up being sent to the hospital with alcohol poisoning.

We found it in a little tienda around the corner from us. It was hysterical. I went in first trying to ask in spanish for needle and thread ..Eric was behind me and the lady started speaking English and pointed to a basket right in front of my face filled with thread and needles. 🫢🤪🤪. The basket was quite large too. Needless to say we all had a good laugh.

Are they growing all the produce in country or is some of it imported? I know that they have a non GMO clause in their constitution so it got me to wondering.
That is a good question. I think a lot of the fruits and veggies come from Ecuador but some of them are imported from different areas in South America. I will find out and let you know. Look for the answer in the near future. Thank you for watching and talk to you soon
