Wow, what a song. In 1970 I was driving South through the high Virginia mountains and the sky was black and grey with swirling clouds like nothing I had ever seen before (kind of scary but beautiful as well) and Credence was on my eight track playing "Who'll stop the Rain ?" It started to rain in a torrential downpour so hard I could hardly see where I was going. Such memories, such a song !!!!

Fogerty explained that it was written about CCR’s experience at Woodstock. They sang their hearts out for two hours in the pouring rain. When I really listen to the lyrics, the song being about Woodstock is very clear. Fogerty also said that he originally wrote another one of my favorite CCR songs, “Have You Ever Seen The Rain”, about the painful and imminent departure of his older brother, Tom, from the band at a time when the group was at their greatest.

So that’s when a few days later he went back home and wrote “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” making the song not a protest song against the Vietnam War, but instead, the experience he recounted during the Woodstock Festival 1969.”

CCR is the first real band I recall as a rock band. i was 10 years old in 76' and started liking rock of all sorts, but CCR was always my fav. to this day, whenever I hear, CCR, it takes me back to my childhood in the mid west.

I have to agree one of the greatest classic songs ever written. It came out in 1970, the year i was born. A lot of great classic songs came out in this particular year. 1970 was a great year for classic rock songs. So glad i got to come to the world in a year that was great classic rock. Amazing how a simple and yet great song could be written about rain. Amazing how this awesome, classic, timeless rock band could wrote such a great song something as simple as rain.

I remember sitting at an outdoor cafe on Copacabana Beach drinking a beer, when a man with only one leg managed to hobble over to the patio and began singing this song in English. I don't believe I've ever seen anything more disturbingly and tragically apropos.

Long as I remember the rain been comin' down
Clouds of mystery pourin' confusion on the ground
Good men through the ages tryin' to find the sun
And I wonder, still I wonder, who'll stop the rain?
I went down Virginia, seekin' shelter from the storm
Caught up in the fable, I watched the tower grow
Five Year Plans and New Deals, wrapped in golden chains
And I wonder, still I wonder, who'll stop the rain?
Heard the singers playin', how we cheered for more
The crowd had rushed together, tryin' to keep warm
Still the rain kept pourin', fallin' on my ears
And I wonder, still I wonder, who'll stop the rain?

5 year plans ( communist USSR) , the "new deal" ( America's version of communism under Rosevelt in the 30's) and the growing "tower" a reference to the first co-ordinated human rebellion against God at the tower of Babel. This song goes way beyond Woodstock and Vietnam.
