We continue our "let's overanalyze Morrowind" series by taking a closer look at some of the memorable bandits encountered in early game. It seems that they were placed strategically throughout the starting zone, acting as "gatekeepers" and teaching the player a worthy lesson. Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing but hey, that's my job.

My favorite bandit was named Ardhil. I met her in Falensarano, a Dunmer Stronghold. My first character ever was an Imperial custom-made Knight with Strength+Personality as favored attributes and the Lady Birthsign. I really like this playstyle because, aside from the mercantile benefits it allows you to use the social interactions system to its fullest. This build made my character REALLY attractive and nice-looking, to a point that some of the bandits refused to attack me, or at least didn't attack me on sight.
So here I was, clearing out that stronghold and then I met a non-hostile bosmer lady. I talked to her and (as I always do with this build) asked her about her trade. That was the first time I discovered that there was a Witch NPC class. She talked about how she finds more in common with the daedra than with regular people. How the civilized society scorns her and condemns her of being evil. And then she admits it by saying: "You know, maybe they're right. Maybe I'm not a nice person. But I can tell you the secrets of the daedra if you are willing to learn."
At that moment, I wished SO BADLY to tell her "you don't have to live like this, you know, come with me, I can take you away from all of this" and make her into a companion. Even though she was a generic NPC in all but her unique name, this encounter was probably one of the most unintentionally powerful things Morrowind ever done to me.

I love your story! I remember exactly feeling the same when I read that witch trade dialogue. I usually play a premade knight with Lady sign so my personality is high and bandits often just stand there for a while before attacking, it's fun.

if only we had bandits like Nels in skyrim, after paying their "toll" they become a loyal mercenary. i bet people would have fondly remembered the Nord barbarian lass who stole the gold of women and the hearts of lone adventuring men.
For me personally, Addamastarus cave is my training ground whenever I create a new character. It's my ritual to test if the character can survive Vvardenfell.

These are all iconic! A favorite of mine is Nelos Onmar in Pelagiad's Halfway Tavern, the only banditry we find him engaged in is stealing the jewels and heart of Maurrie Aurmine. He's a pleasant enough guy, and a great side quest when you're visiting Nels!
Btw something I didn't realize before. Halfway Tavern seems to be a hotspot for these kind of things. Nels Llendo (kinda) with female player character, or just friendly if playing as male. Nelos Onmar, a very similar character, also a "gentleman" rogue romancing Maurrie. And then there's Ahnassi and her lttle questline.

I totally agree about TESIII bandits all being named adding a lot to the immersion. I'm likewise glad that Tamriel Rebuilt replaced all of its "Roamers" with unique NPCs in the Embers of Empire release.
I didn't know about roamers, but I'm glad they changed it. Bloodmoon also has nameless reavers, fryse hags and berserkers. Some unique berserkers and fryse hags would make a difference imo, with some more detailed visual storytelling along. That's why Solstheim felt too empty compared to Vvardenfell. Generic hostile npcs would just stand in empty forests and caves, but I guess they didn't wanna bother too much with the dlc.

I forget the names of the bandits but I always remember the tricky bandits where a “damsel in distress” convinced me to retrieve her ring from the bottom of a small pond and once it’s picked up you are attacked by the “damsel” as well as an archer in chitin armor with an amulet that gives her 80% chameleon (if I remember correctly) so it takes a moment to identify where you’re getting attacked from. The amulet was one of my favorite items in the game and was a must have in all my play throughs. Love the content! You’re awesome, thank you!
That's one of my favorite encounters, made me paranoid of everyone in game for a while. But that amulet was so useful especially at low levels, that I used to regularly go there as aoon as possible and attempt to retrieve it. My very first video about 6 or 7 years ago was about it! It was on my previous channel that I deleted, so I definitely want to do it again.
I remember her too and her invisible boyfriend/partner.

I laughed when I re-met her recently. I was SO suspicious of Nels, but he turned out to be okay (I'm a female character). But when I found that woman by the pool? "SuRe..." Looks back after approaching the pool and see her friend--and 100% set to rain arrows and summon a scamp.
I could never manage the fireball dude in Seyda Neen with my new level 1 characters until just recently. I made an Orc and got in with iron armor and a two handed claymore sword, still level 1, but I had an ace up my sleeve: The Atronach sign. I must have absorbed at least one or two spells during battle. I just had a sliver of HP left but I managed to cave in his skull. I never played an Orc before but yeah, they are tough!
That build sounds like a lot of fun to be honest. I love Morrowind's plain iron armor, too bad it breaks easily so gotta keep hammers around. I've never played as an orc because I'm always messing around with nords but they seem to be fun. I'd love to play an unusual orc build, like spellsword or withchunter lol.
@@boreanknight Yeah my Orc is a witchhunter :D He went to Morrowind because of all the Deadra worship there. He has no magical talents though, he is a simple brute but with a good heart and is currently building his skill set working as a mercenary in the fighters guild. I made an Orc similar to the librarian in the college of Winterhold once, but it didn't stick for me. I like the simplicity of a based orc slicing through deadra heads :D Kinda reminds me of the doom slayer.

@@boreanknight Nords in Morrowind are overpowered, they have resistances to frost and lightning damage and have a special lightning spell. I usually don't play melee heavy races (Nord, Orc, Redgaurds) and usually play middle of the road builds like Imperials or Dark Elves (Argonians too).
@@seawind930 Yeah they're crazy resistant but to me it was part of their charm.
After years of not playing, the early game road side people have been a blast to get to know again.
Haha! In my first playthrough, as I was blindly attempting to find the way from Seyda Neen to Pelagiad, I ran into Nels Llendo. When he asked me for a kiss, I declined, because I thought he might be a vampire trying to turn me.

Melar, Fjol, and Godrod - especially Fjol & Godrod - decimated my character a lot too. Nels always charmed me. And Snowy Granius always really stood out, almost reminding me of Caius Cosades lol. Morrowind's named bandits were really something -- just giving these enemies names, their own unique flair, and hidden dialogue really elevated them above the series' other brigands.

Underrated channel
I never found Melar that difficult, probably because I always waited out his magicka. Snowy on the other hand... he was final boss material for a lot of players back then, lol.
And it is real neat that thanks to AI all these characters can have voiced dialog after all these years,
Godrod made me realize how powerful sujamma is
I think its funny because I always paid Nels not out of fear, but just because I found likable and stylish, and especially because the first time I played I traveled so haphazardly that I bumped into the breton woman with a crush on him first haha.
What shaders/lighting mods do you use to make morrowind look like that;

I almost never had any problems with the fireball guy in Addamasartus. Probably because most of my characters are Dunmer so his fireballs are reduced by 75%.

Not entirely, you see to be successful in Russia and East Europe as a whole really. You need some level of clunk and jank, not to much though. It's a fine line with very complex ways to mathematically reach the perfect amount, not a lot of developers are well enough trained to get the right amount but piranha bytes and there gothic games would be a example of master of the jank.
