  • Tired of your boonie hat flopping around like Bill Clinton's weenie after accidentally catching a glimpse of Hillary in the shower? I'll show you how to make your hat stronger than a Bill Cosby cocktail!
After this mod your hat will be stiff enough to keep its shape, but flexible enough to easily shape by hand. You will now be able to use it for a hatband flashlight. Also makes a handy emergency parachute or hor d'oeuvre tray.

Rub candle wax on it (unscented) and heat it with a hairdryer melting the wax into the fibers, not only will it stiffen it up but it will waterproof your hat. You're welcome!

By far the best of my boonies caps is the one I took the outer seam off and sewed a coat hanger all the way around and then reattached the seam. You can cut your brim down narrowing it to about 3-5 fingers, attach the coat hanger and you have stiffened and shortened the brim! Two mods at one time! Use a narrow coat hanger as some are thick.

This video could have been made taking half the time. Besides that - it showed succinctly how to do what needed to be done. I actually stripped some 14 gage romex and used that. once I got it all the way around I overlapped it 2 inches to avoid any unsupported areas and inched the last part of the wire into the brim about an inch. Thanks work out really well for a hat I washed a few times that became too floppy. Gave new life to a 20 yr old hat!

Watched this. Then thinking about it, gave me the idea to come up with a better, even easier solution.
    Using long plastic zip ties.
You can start at the seam of the rim, and without cutting, feed one through (I used ones 2 feet long because it's what I had), and once that's fed through to the end, trim off the little locking do-hicky with scissors. Then without cutting, just splitting a few threads on the rim near that one, feed the next one going the other way.
I used three in this process trimming off about three inches of the last one. Just took a very few minutes and worked like a charm.
