This is one of my favorite topics for a couple of reasons. First, the hat was designed for tropical (Vietnam) use, however, most of,our incompetent commanders and chairborne admin types that never went out on operations, despised the boogie hat because they thought it didn’t look military. During my thirty months in country, the majority of units, including infantry wore that stupid baseball cap that was worthless especially in the rain. Secondly, there is a general misconception about the loops around the hat brim. The reason for those loops was to hold, the mosquito net, that came with the hat, in place . And my third point is that SOG does not stand for Special Operations Group! It stood for the MACV reconnaissance element named Studies And Observation Group, a thinly veiled title to cover for their mostly cross border recon activities.
Correct. It started as Special Operations Group, but then changed to Studies and Observations Group in an effort to conceal its true mission objectives. I didn't make that clear enough. Thanks for watching and great input.
Great info👍
Going to hell cover.
One thing I have learned is that if you buy a USMC Boonie hat while visiting Parris Island
And wear it on RUclips some people will accuse you of stolen valor. Interestingly enough. Those are usually people who have never served in the military.
True that.
In addition to that, it's not a hat, but a cover. Per USMC jargon.
While I won't claim to know much about much, I understood that " stolen valor" had to do with claiming to be decorated, ie. purple heart etc., although never having served. I've not found in my research that just claiming to have served when one actually didnt, doesn't qualify...although that distinction might be a legality, which the Vet wouldn't really care...you did ok, you didnt , don't claim to have...Thank You All for Your Service and Sacrafice...
@@uncasnetewateweslenape2383 yeah stolen Valor is if you claim to have served, either by saying you have or by wearing phony medals e.t.c.
Wearing a military hat is definitely not stolen Valor lol
aint stolen valour claiming benefits or war pensions and usin rank and decoration u aint entitled to be treated different? I wear all different issue and non issue kit ,not badged or like in a regulation manner but thats not stolen valour even though i was a junior soldier over 30 years ago..combat gear is well built, comfortable and camo is fuckin dope..i doubt Master Sgt Henley would mind..seems theres a bunch of plums cutting about trying to call people out not knowing wth theyre on about. Boonies are life, just spent £60 on a TAD gear scout boonie, designer combat gear lol
I believe both the British and Australian militaries had made these style hats (Giggle hat/Bush hat/Boonie Hat) standard issue since the Malayan Emergency, they were certainly the standard issue during the Vietnam war.
Right you are and this dude thinks that they were developed by the us when they were adopted by the us
Boonie hats! The roofer's best friend on hot summer days!
You read my mind 🤣👍
You can't beat the mexican straw sombero bro. They are superior

Very informative! Additionally, the interior “pocket” in some models is great for small documents, cash, ear plugs, and...a back-up condom. Always use protection... 😎
Indeed! Thank you for bringing that up!
You and your battle buddies may have gotten a little too close, but hey... Don't ask don't tell I guess
I don't know what you've been up to, but men don't get pregnant...
@@ponraul1221 STDs exist
I’ve heard an urban legend that the condom was to keep rainwater outa the gun barrel.
I now know more than I should about boogie hats.
AMEN
I was issued one before going to Cuba. Spent a year there, in the hot sun, never allowed to officially wear it. Of course, we werent allowed to combat roll our sleeves, or wear flight gloves.
I have dozens of pics wearing all 3 though :). What command says, and what grunts who are on patrol all the time do, sometimes are completely opposite. Grunt life!
Roger that! Thanks for watching!
One of the best features of the boonie is how you can secure the hat tight onto the head with the strap cinched up around the back of the neck so it doesn’t blow off in the wind or get knocked off by branches etc and lose such a critical piece of shelter in hot sunny weather
Absolutely, just ask the guys on river boats.... that chin strap came in very handy...
To avoid cutting or sewing your boonie, you can run a wire or coat hanger through the brim to make it stable and hold form
Thats a good mod and easy to do!
I spent a few years in the 80's in Marine Recon (I am easy to vet for those getting their dander up), and was never issued a "bush cover" in the Marines (I got off active duty in 89). I was stationed in Okinawa and got mine from Saigon Sams down by Kadena AFB. It was woodland pattern and had a short brim. I have been wearing that thing since 1983! Now, I joined the Army Reserves in 1991, and was issued my first boonie with the "chocolate chip" uniforms of the Gulf War era, and every evolution of the BDU until I retired in 2010. All of these had the wider brim. As far as the strap goes, basically the only time we would wear it was during helo inserts/extracts to keep it from blowing off your grape and ending up in the rotors (seen it a couple times). Other than that we typically just tucked it inside. As a Team Leader/Squad Leader/Plt Sgt I would not let my guys roll the brim in any way. While others may have thought of us as "cowboys" I didn't want to look like one, and for the reasons you mentioned about outline break up. I also have quite a collection of boonies, but was issued them all with the exception of my OD green one, and my nephew is on active duty in the Marines right now and got me a desert MarPat boonie with the EGA on it. I find the brim to be ridiculously wide, kinda like my ACU ones.....
Great info, brother. I appreciate the share, and thanks for watching.
we don't say marine recon = we usually say our MOS = like i was an 03/11 before i went on to 03/21 = 81/85'

@@sonnysantana5454 considering not everyone that watches or reads the posts is a Marine, using MOS designators is kinda pointless. No one outside of the Marines, even some 03's I know, know what 0321 is, much less 8652-4. If you met a squid and he said his MOS was 8404, YOU and I both know what that is, but SO FEW others would. So, for the non-Marines, those outside the US (and there are some), it is more universal to say I am a Recon Marine. Most recognize that term. While they may not comprehend all involved, they can at least identify my background.
As an aside, which Recon unit were you with? I quite a few people that were in 2nd Recon in Beirut. Personally, I was at 3rd from 83-85 before becoming an 8151 (see what I did there?).
@@jayneubauer3401...Thanks for clarifying this convo. I was in a Guard unit in the late 90's and my squad leader was Force Recon (I think, it was some recon unit) during Desert Storm. He always used recon and not a numerical designation. Same with a few Marine infantry guys who crossed over.
Woah, Yankee with brim
Yankee with 360 brim
Thanks for a very informative video. Guys were using wire to shape their boonie brims but when they leaned forward to take a compass bearing it would throw their compasses off. Nylon lawn trimmer cord solved the issue.
FYI the British in the 1950's-60's used to turn their boonies into a field expedient patrol cap by folding in 3 sides of the hat. It works well! Keep up the great work mate. Cheers Dave Studdert ( Australia )
Great input! Thank you for that!
The boonies hat goes back to the revolutionary War. The tricorn hat is a boonie hat with the sides folded up. Just like you folded up the back so the brim doesn't interfere with your pack, they folded the sides so they could carry their riffles at shoulder arms.
Good point. Thanks for watching.
French revolution?
Not quite that far, Boonie is short for boondockers taken from the Filipino word bundok meaning mountain. It was just a hat worn by anyone working under the sun but the rebels also wore it so it was prohibited to be worn to not be suspected being rebels. From where I'm from we call it silag.
Hello Wingman 115 I'm a little late coming across your Boonie hat review. Very informative review. I use to wear the straw hat traditional hats for camping and working outdoors as you probably already know they don't last. After looking at hats the Boonie hat is by far the is the best long lasting hat you can buy. I now own several hats for my camping and outdoor needs. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your view on the Bonnie hats for all of us to view. A wise man once told me you can never own to many knives and guns. Take care and be safe during our trouble times going on right now in our country. And as always buy only USA made products.
👍🏻👊🏻
Great topic, I always loved boonie hats and have a few. The classic tiger stripe pattern that you see in use in Vietnam was never issued by the US Military, The hats and uniforms were almost always locally obtained from local tailors and shops as well as from Japan and a few other countries.. Later the US Military did issue boonie hats but only in OD green and ERDL patterns. A lot of troops considered the brims on these too big and cut them down .Btw SOG means Studies And Observation Group.
👊🏻👍🏻
Picked up an ERDL boonie (Lowland version) recently and modified the brim. And yes, very early in its inception the SOG name was changed to Studies and Observations Group from Special Operations Group in attempt to disguise it's true nature. I should've made that more clear in this video... LOL... Thank you for your input and thanks for watching.
Cool vid, thanks man. Learned a lot about the history, form and function. Very educational!
GO NAVY! was an FMF corpsman in the Ghan, reminded me of how comfortable the boonie was!
I love them! I bought a tiger stripe GI type at Joes Army Navy in Pontiac Mi back in '84. It went through the Corps with me (I wore it in the field only), still have it today and use it. It hangs with my issued choc chip patterned boonie and a desert digi of today given to me by a younger Marine. I push bailing wire thru the outer edge that caps the brim, all the way around. It allows to form and keep brim where you want it.
I totally forgot to mention that mod with the wire around the brim. Thanks for the input and for watching.
I haven't been to Joe's in a few yrs. Awesome place.
Thank you for the history and intro in how to wear it etc. I never thought I'd have one on my head, but now summer heat is coming, and my work is mostly done outdoors and it's often getting not only hot but also dusty, smelly and splattery as well. so, i needed something functional over summer, with a brim to protect me from the sun, something i can just shove in my bag, something i can just dump in the washing machine when dirty.
10 mins into googling came across a booney hat. bought.
seriously, the more i look at the thing, the more i wonder why the hell we didnt come up with it sooner? it's a genius piece of headgear and i'm looking forward to wearing it.
Right on! Thanks for watching!
I still have and sometimes wear the hat issued to me in 1970 the day after I arrived at Quan Loi as a scout pilot with the 11the ACR, I wore mine with the sides up and held in place with the chin strap, but there was no SOP about hats but the bonnie hat was the hat for most troopers. Some of the aero riffle blues wore black berets. That hat of mine saw a lot of abuse then and later. The greens, blues, fatigues, several pair of boots, low quarters, over coat, rain coat, field jackets, TWs and two Service caps, and a flight helmet, all long gone. But that jungle hat and some dark glasses and my wings are still around.
That's so awesome that you still have those pieces of gear! Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching.
Extremely outstanding video!!! And yes sir you were extremely spot on your intel. Really enjoyed!!!!
Thanks for watching.
Useful information. Good points. Nicely presented. Also great setting.
Really well done. Thanks.
The front and back differential is exactly what I was looking for and this video solved my dilemma. Thanks so much, sir!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for explaining the info on the hat. My hubby served in Vietnam and gets to take an honor flight to DC next week. I purchased a hat like this for him to wear so he won’t get sunburned.
Roger that! Thanks for watching, and thank your husband for his time in service, especially in Nam.
very interesting information thank you for sharing awesome job man
Thank you.
I've got a Rothco tiger stripe boonie; I ended up cutting the strap because it frayed really quick.
Great video!
I recently got a "Chocolate chip" camo boonie hat and I did the same, cutt off the string strap
Restring it with hollow paracord sheath.
Fascinating info. Thanks for sharing. Ill check out more of your vids.
Thanks for watching Allan.
Wow! I really enjoyed this video… I have just one Bonnie hat, I love it, it makes me feel like a specop guy (my biggest dream wich was impossible to get was to be in the military). I didn’t know I needed this video… this guy is respectful, to the point, humble and he know what he is talking about… I’m a new subscriber to this channel just now…
Nice video. Always wear my boonie during practice and the hunt. I kinda roll up the front right corner a little on mine for bowstring clearance at full draw.
Yes, that's a good modification for that. Thanks for sharing.
Oh and I love the history lesson you gave us about the boonie hat. That information is fascinating to me.
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks again for checking out the video.
Been wearing a USGI patrol cap every day since I was 12, and when I went looking for a hat for outdoor activities in the summer I went with a USGI boonie because i liked how the shap carried over.
I prefer the classic woodland camo as it's what I knew from all the Army gear my dad gave me.
Currently the only US manufacturer I know of who still produced anything Gov't spec woodland camo is R&B inc.
Just got two of their boonies in today, and ordered 4 more patrol caps just in case they stop making them.
Now I'll have 5 replacement patrol caps.
Like you, I've been wearing a USGI boonie since I was a kid, and it was always in the classic woodland pattern. It wasn't until after I got out of the military that I started wearing the old school OD green version. But as of lately, I've been getting the itch to go buy another one in that good ole M81 pattern. Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing.
Great video, enjoyed listening to the history of bonnie hats!

Wow lots of great info in this video! Thanks.
Thanks.
Fantastic passionate information on the classic boonie!

Much appreciated.
Getting my first Boonie this week, this was a great video!
👍🏻👊🏻
Right on! Hope you like your new boonie! And thank you.
Pretty interesting video, hard to believe there's this much to say about a hat, but I watched it all the way through. Thanks for sharing guys.
👍🏻👊🏻
Excellent explanation Sir.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you!
Thank you for watching.
We had to px purchase our boonies in the 82nd. But a few things we would do. Is sew in a piece of VS17 panel and write our 2 pace counts in with permanent marker. Plus a short piece of gutted 550 as a lanyard with a loop for a button retention on our BDUs. Sometimes use the black safety pin from a bandoleer and pin in a pair of foam range ear plugs
Been wearing a bush hat since 1981, it has turned into a collection, wear mine spring thru fall. All genuine military, I have wide brims, medium brims and the real short brim version favored by the SF. I keep 3- 4 bush hats in my truck all the time, good video
Awesome. Thanks for watching.
Great video. Loved the history lesson. Thank you for your service. I shoot a long gun or bow left handed and hat brims do get in the way. I like the Aussie style of pinning the brim up on the side you shoot from. In my case, I pin (or snap if available) the left side up. When not shooting, I can always flop it back down. Also, here in Kansas the hat stays on very well with your style of chin strap to the back of your head.
We had a fun time making this video. Thanks for watching.
The Australians pin up the LEFT side brim so it doesn't get clipped when you sling a rifle. It goes back to the days of shouldering 9 pounds of SMLE rifle which would knock your hat clear off your head if you didn't.
@@jeffreycrawley1216 Thank you for that information. I did not know that. Always good to learn the real story on things.
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome. It was fun making this video with Wingman115.
the Pith helmet also looks good and has a rich history, even the NVA used them. thank you for your video on the boonie hats. i collect them and have boonies from Nam olive drab, ERDL Lime green camo, chocolate chip, 3 color desert, British DPM desert, ACU,OCP and M81 woodland.
Sounds like a cool boonie collection you got there. Thank you for sharing and thanks for watching.
im looking for a camouflaged boonie hat. they look kinda goofy compared to fitted baseball caps and regular army caps though. Great video !!!
Excellent information.
👍🏻👊🏻
I prefer the chin strap behind my head as well. Another advantage of that is if it's windy, the hat won't blow off from behind.
I agree 100%
Bingo 👍🏾
Great video and interesting history!
Thanks for watching.
Interesting history! Great video!
Thank you!
Great information here. 🇺🇸
i love how they are all shaped into captain price's hat
Or... imagine this... they modeled Captain Price's hat off of something real soldiers have been doing for decades.
Just snagged a boonie and this video was awesome for styling.
Thanks for watching.
Great video! Congrats 👏 Greetings from Athens 🇬🇷 🌞
I wear the Canadian version: the Tilley hat. lol I do have a Canadian military bucket hat, they are to get in normal to large sizes and most I see are 6 1/4 or 6 1/2 at most. I prefer to fold up the back of the Canadian one leaving a peak in front.
Cool vid man thanks
Thank you for the channel support.
I always loved the boonie hat and wore mine as often as I could when I was in the sandbox. The chin strap behind the neck was how I wore mine for the same reason.
I wear one bass fishing. I thinks it's made by Columbia. I think the brim is a little wider than the military version. Love it!
Good to go! Thanks for watchin!
My dad was in the Vietnam war ! And I have his boonie hat - this is so cool. To know the history behind it. Thanks
Roger that. Thanks for watching.
Amazing!
Thanks!
Working on mine now. Woodland camo and I’m sewing it up by hand. New subscriber. Great vid. God bless
Good stuff Wes. Thanks for watching.
That's awesome! Glad you liked the video.

Just remember, as you already know, it's mostly mental. You just gotta want it bad enough. Lots of luck to ya!
How is you doin in buds
@LONE WOLF i hope not . Faith i have
Did you make it through
Dude love this vid, love the boonie hat personally, and the history was something I never even bothered to think of. +1 for the peanut head too. lol I wrapped shock cord around the loops so that I can cinch it down to fit my small head. (Maybe cinch isn't the proper term. Tighten slightly, not CINCH! You know what I mean.) Excellent vid, love the history aspect. God bless and stay safe brother.

I LOVE boonie hats. I’ve been wearing them since I was a kid. I’ve got dozens of pictures of me with wild turkey and deer wearing my old Atvantage Camo boonie hat I got as a present in the 90’s. It’s getting pretty floppy now a days, but it really does break up the outline of your head. I consistently get within 10 yards of wild turkeys when I hunt them, and I think my boonie hat helps me do that.
And a big thanks to you for your military service to our country.
Roger that. Thank you for watching.
Part of folding the sides is also in line with the concept of the slouch hat. Reduced smacking the hat during rifleman drills or shouldering.
Roger that! Thanks for watching!
I have been desert running with a milspec bucket hat..the shorter brim doesnt flip or fold like the wider boonie brims..good stuff..💯
Nice! Thanks for watching!
Yeah the forage caps were designed to be tall and have a frame but they started making them with same pattern and no frame. They’d flip down in front or to the side because the disc was heavier and brought it down. Usually brass was put on top of the disc. They look great to me.
Great info, and thanks for watching.
Meant to carry things you foraged for like fruit
Still have mine from Jotc...very sentimental lol...good video brother 👍..
👍🏻👊🏻
Yes! I purchased a larger size contractor-style boonie hat in multicam, and sewed multiple rows of 1 inch webbing on the brim, the top and all around the sides.
I have about 20 feet of 550-cord, small ferro rod, wrist compass in the webbing.
Within the interior pocket, I store a fresnel lens and a 1 gallon ziploc freezer bag.
Wow! That's some serious mods! Very awesome survival boonie right there! Thank you for sharing that!

When the back rolls up like you were showing it looks a lot like a Jones hat.
I learned somthing new today 👍
This man loves a Boonie as much as I do!
He does.
I wasn't in the bush in VN on base (marine) we wore soft cap/green cap/8 point whatever you call it. Had to put on a form and starch to look sharp
I am surprised you didn’t mention the stitch people put in the front making the hat more A shaped. The British style.
Yeah, that's a good one that I forgot to mention. Thanks for watching.
Outstanding cover demo. Show how to ranger roll the patrol cover. Thanks
i threaded a piece of soft electric fence wire through the brim of mine,, works great for me
Nice. I should've mentioned that mod. Thanks for sharing and watching.
Cool....
All the guys I know that crushed their PC forward did not do it because of the Civil War covers. They did it because they wanted to look different.
cool
Having a bit of a thing for snap brim hats, I like the upturned rear brim sloped down to the front. Also, I believe shooting was the reason the Australian troops pinned one side of their hats.
Love my boonie!
Me too!
The instructions that came with the Canadian "Tilley" hat recommended putting the chin strap at the back, "like the RCMP do on their Stetsons"...to stop it blowing off.
I’m liking the wired brim these days. An easy mod.
Chin strap on the back, curled up in the back, perfect!
Good for catching/filtering water too!
I was not in the military, 4 F. As a cancer survivor my doctor told me wear a cover and spf 50 or better. Boonies cover better than ball caps and cooler than a wool hat most of the time.
Great vid✊
👍🏻👊🏻
Thank you, Nico.
I love my Boonie hat Good video
Thank you. Yeah, me too.
Great video! Really like the first boonie hat you were wearing. Wondering if you could provide me with more specifics on it if possible. I’d really like to purchase that same exact one.
Hi Jimmy. An online search for R&B Inc military issue boonie hats should give you options on where to find and purchase one of these. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
Hello. Great video, very informative. Can you tell me the length of the brim on the first hat? Thanks!
The first hat, the OD green one, has a brim of approximately 2.5 inches. Thanks for watching!
I have to find a good hat like the ones you presented in this video, because I sweat a lot of the head. It's really weird. I do not sweat under my armpits or even in the back, but especially from the head, like a lawn sprinkler, lol
Me too! That's why I wear a head rag underneath my hats sometimes.
Killed me when he said "If u wanna be high speed"
High speed, low drag... LOL.. Thanks for watching.
I crushed my army patrol cap for 25 years. From the time I was a PV2 fresh out of OSUT, all the way to CW3. 1SGs hated it and would correct me, but I never listened. Eventually I got to a rank where I could tell just about everyone to go fuck themselves. Loved wearing my patrol cap, cause after a period of time wearing it, it was trained and I could crush it into a pocket and pop it out, would come out looking the same every-time. I only got to wear the boonie a handful of time, on certain missions. Love the boonie.
Right on, brother. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching.
Thank you Sir. When I first came across a highly trimmed boonie hat, I became curious about the origins of the cultural design.
He likes to squash the front down like a Bummer Cap!😱
I have the same issue.. usually they are too big for me.
I always loved boonies. Hard to find a good one though.
