This is one of my favorite topics for a couple of reasons. First, the hat was designed for tropical (Vietnam) use, however, most of,our incompetent commanders and chairborne admin types that never went out on operations, despised the boogie hat because they thought it didn’t look military. During my thirty months in country, the majority of units, including infantry wore that stupid baseball cap that was worthless especially in the rain. Secondly, there is a general misconception about the loops around the hat brim. The reason for those loops was to hold, the mosquito net, that came with the hat, in place . And my third point is that SOG does not stand for Special Operations Group! It stood for the MACV reconnaissance element named Studies And Observation Group, a thinly veiled title to cover for their mostly cross border recon activities.

      @jaimeleondelaparra3877 Год назад +13

Correct. It started as Special Operations Group, but then changed to Studies and Observations Group in an effort to conceal its true mission objectives. I didn't make that clear enough. Thanks for watching and great input.

One thing I have learned is that if you buy a USMC Boonie hat while visiting Parris Island
And wear it on RUclips some people will accuse you of stolen valor. Interestingly enough. Those are usually people who have never served in the military.

While I won't claim to know much about much, I understood that " stolen valor" had to do with claiming to be decorated, ie. purple heart etc., although never having served. I've not found in my research that just claiming to have served when one actually didnt, doesn't qualify...although that distinction might be a legality, which the Vet wouldn't really care...you did ok, you didnt , don't claim to have...Thank You All for Your Service and Sacrafice...

I have dozens of pics wearing all 3 though :). What command says, and what grunts who are on patrol all the time do, sometimes are completely opposite. Grunt life!

One of the best features of the boonie is how you can secure the hat tight onto the head with the strap cinched up around the back of the neck so it doesn’t blow off in the wind or get knocked off by branches etc and lose such a critical piece of shelter in hot sunny weather

I spent a few years in the 80's in Marine Recon (I am easy to vet for those getting their dander up), and was never issued a "bush cover" in the Marines (I got off active duty in 89). I was stationed in Okinawa and got mine from Saigon Sams down by Kadena AFB. It was woodland pattern and had a short brim. I have been wearing that thing since 1983! Now, I joined the Army Reserves in 1991, and was issued my first boonie with the "chocolate chip" uniforms of the Gulf War era, and every evolution of the BDU until I retired in 2010. All of these had the wider brim. As far as the strap goes, basically the only time we would wear it was during helo inserts/extracts to keep it from blowing off your grape and ending up in the rotors (seen it a couple times). Other than that we typically just tucked it inside. As a Team Leader/Squad Leader/Plt Sgt I would not let my guys roll the brim in any way. While others may have thought of us as "cowboys" I didn't want to look like one, and for the reasons you mentioned about outline break up. I also have quite a collection of boonies, but was issued them all with the exception of my OD green one, and my nephew is on active duty in the Marines right now and got me a desert MarPat boonie with the EGA on it. I find the brim to be ridiculously wide, kinda like my ACU ones.....

@@sonnysantana5454 considering not everyone that watches or reads the posts is a Marine, using MOS designators is kinda pointless. No one outside of the Marines, even some 03's I know, know what 0321 is, much less 8652-4. If you met a squid and he said his MOS was 8404, YOU and I both know what that is, but SO FEW others would. So, for the non-Marines, those outside the US (and there are some), it is more universal to say I am a Recon Marine. Most recognize that term. While they may not comprehend all involved, they can at least identify my background.
As an aside, which Recon unit were you with? I quite a few people that were in 2nd Recon in Beirut. Personally, I was at 3rd from 83-85 before becoming an 8151 (see what I did there?).

FYI the British in the 1950's-60's used to turn their boonies into a field expedient patrol cap by folding in 3 sides of the hat. It works well! Keep up the great work mate. Cheers Dave Studdert ( Australia )

The boonies hat goes back to the revolutionary War. The tricorn hat is a boonie hat with the sides folded up. Just like you folded up the back so the brim doesn't interfere with your pack, they folded the sides so they could carry their riffles at shoulder arms.

Not quite that far, Boonie is short for boondockers taken from the Filipino word bundok meaning mountain. It was just a hat worn by anyone working under the sun but the rebels also wore it so it was prohibited to be worn to not be suspected being rebels. From where I'm from we call it silag.

Hello Wingman 115 I'm a little late coming across your Boonie hat review. Very informative review. I use to wear the straw hat traditional hats for camping and working outdoors as you probably already know they don't last. After looking at hats the Boonie hat is by far the is the best long lasting hat you can buy. I now own several hats for my camping and outdoor needs. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your view on the Bonnie hats for all of us to view. A wise man once told me you can never own to many knives and guns. Take care and be safe during our trouble times going on right now in our country. And as always buy only USA made products.

Great topic, I always loved boonie hats and have a few. The classic tiger stripe pattern that you see in use in Vietnam was never issued by the US Military, The hats and uniforms were almost always locally obtained from local tailors and shops as well as from Japan and a few other countries.. Later the US Military did issue boonie hats but only in OD green and ERDL patterns. A lot of troops considered the brims on these too big and cut them down .Btw SOG means Studies And Observation Group.

Picked up an ERDL boonie (Lowland version) recently and modified the brim. And yes, very early in its inception the SOG name was changed to Studies and Observations Group from Special Operations Group in attempt to disguise it's true nature. I should've made that more clear in this video... LOL... Thank you for your input and thanks for watching.

It hangs with my issued choc chip patterned boonie and a desert digi of today given to me by a younger Marine. I push bailing wire thru the outer edge that caps the brim, all the way around. It allows to form and keep brim where you want it.

10 mins into googling came across a booney hat. bought.
seriously, the more i look at the thing, the more i wonder why the hell we didnt come up with it sooner? it's a genius piece of headgear and i'm looking forward to wearing it.

I still have and sometimes wear the hat issued to me in 1970 the day after I arrived at Quan Loi as a scout pilot with the 11the ACR, I wore mine with the sides up and held in place with the chin strap, but there was no SOP about hats but the bonnie hat was the hat for most troopers. Some of the aero riffle blues wore black berets. That hat of mine saw a lot of abuse then and later. The greens, blues, fatigues, several pair of boots, low quarters, over coat, rain coat, field jackets, TWs and two Service caps, and a flight helmet, all long gone. But that jungle hat and some dark glasses and my wings are still around.

Dude love this vid, love the boonie hat personally, and the history was something I never even bothered to think of. +1 for the peanut head too. lol I wrapped shock cord around the loops so that I can cinch it down to fit my small head. (Maybe cinch isn't the proper term. Tighten slightly, not CINCH! You know what I mean.) Excellent vid, love the history aspect. God bless and stay safe brother.

I LOVE boonie hats. I’ve been wearing them since I was a kid. I’ve got dozens of pictures of me with wild turkey and deer wearing my old Atvantage Camo boonie hat I got as a present in the 90’s. It’s getting pretty floppy now a days, but it really does break up the outline of your head. I consistently get within 10 yards of wild turkeys when I hunt them, and I think my boonie hat helps me do that.
And a big thanks to you for your military service to our country.

Part of folding the sides is also in line with the concept of the slouch hat. Reduced smacking the hat during rifleman drills or shouldering.

Yeah the forage caps were designed to be tall and have a frame but they started making them with same pattern and no frame. They’d flip down in front or to the side because the disc was heavier and brought it down. Usually brass was put on top of the disc. They look great to me.

Yes! I purchased a larger size contractor-style boonie hat in multicam, and sewed multiple rows of 1 inch webbing on the brim, the top and all around the sides.
I have about 20 feet of 550-cord, small ferro rod, wrist compass in the webbing.
Within the interior pocket, I store a fresnel lens and a 1 gallon ziploc freezer bag.

Having a bit of a thing for snap brim hats, I like the upturned rear brim sloped down to the front. Also, I believe shooting was the reason the Australian troops pinned one side of their hats.

I crushed my army patrol cap for 25 years. From the time I was a PV2 fresh out of OSUT, all the way to CW3. 1SGs hated it and would correct me, but I never listened. Eventually I got to a rank where I could tell just about everyone to go fuck themselves. Loved wearing my patrol cap, cause after a period of time wearing it, it was trained and I could crush it into a pocket and pop it out, would come out looking the same every-time. I only got to wear the boonie a handful of time, on certain missions. Love the boonie.
