While service manager at a Chevy dealer I had a 15 2500 diesel high country come in. Customer had all the emissions deleted and a tune with no other modifications. I took it on a 30 mile drive on the highway and the gauge showed 30+mpg the whole time. Obviously I didn’t fill it to double check the gauge, but I am a believer. Only thing I was worried about was longevity of the engine, but the truck ran great. The owner said he literally had the work done for fuel economy purposes. He towed a 10,000 lb trailer everywhere and got over 20 mpg towing.
I've seen 24 out of an LBZ, yes it was calculated by fuel in, and miles driven along a known route. EGR delete, downpipe, 5" MBRP kit, EFI LIVE, DSP5 switch, stock tires, stock ride height. It is possible to tune it that way, and this wasn't the most fuel efficient set up, but it was a 6 hour drive going 80mph with the A/C on. Just requires parts and tuning for mileage vs power.
jmax7733 same here but I'm on 34x12in tires on heavy ass 20 in wheels. A 120hp tune but I've got a pusher y bridge and cold charge pipe. I got 24.2 at best.
when i had my lbz i only got 16.8, however it was lifted 8 inches and on 40s. had pretty much same crap you had, i now have a cummins 4th gen fully deleted pretty much same as your lbz and only get 18.3, super miss my lbz.
I hate to pee on your parade, but there is no way in hell you're getting 26 mpg with an LML with 40 inch tires. I own a 15 Denali Duramax, an 02 SLT Duramax and had a 14 Denali Duramax before that and I've sold Diesel Performance parts for 15+ years. I concur on the BS. 26 mpg would mean that you're getting upwards of 900 miles out of your 36 gallon tank. It would be VERY hard to do it with stock 265 tires. The best I've seen recently is a 2013 LML getting 22-23 mpg on LONG hwy drives with stock 265's. With bigger, heavier 40" tires, lifted up in the air, its getting MUCH worse. I'd guess you're really at 14-18 mpg MAX. Since you gave no details on your calculations I can only assume that like most people, you have no clue how to calculate mileage. many people look at their "instant" MPG coasting downhill with a tailwind and think they're getting 25-30 MPG. That is NOT your average MPG. To get your ACTUAL mileage start by filling your tank up to the neck which should be about 33-35 gallons in that you have a 36 gallon tank. Next, clear all of your averages on your heads-up display. The LML's are very accurate on the dash computer, but you'll still want to compare to your ACTUAL hand calculations. I'm also assuming that you had your tuner corrected for your current tire OD. If not you're likely cheating yourself out of some mileage. Now DRIVE till nearly empty. If you you approach 600 + miles per tank I would be very surprised. If you do have a one in a million truck that actually gets 25-26 mpg with big tires I'll gladly eat my words.......
I would believe the 26 mpg if you checked each tank at the pump on the receipt and not off the computer.. I get 23-24 tops without 40's and I have all the deletes, down pipes ect..
Donn Worry exactly. You can't go off the display. Hand calculated, this might be around 15-17. Haha I got 11" of lift and 37's with 2 less cylinders in my Cummins, hand calculated, about 16 highway.

My truck doesn't have any of that emissions bs, 11" of lift, 22's on 37's and 2 less cylinders and averaging 14 in the city. Around 17 on the highway with EFI Live.
Anthony Joubran yes I have 5" turbo back MBRP exhaust, injen intake, h&s tuned, stage 4 transmission, I run 285/75r17 so a lot smaller tire so I have less weight and with no wind I get 24mpg tops
Lifting it changes the gearing because of the bigger tire radius. It's possible that lifted trucks actually get better MPG's ironically but less torque when towing or getting out of the hole 0-60.
Turning fewer RPM's doesn't guarantee better fuel mileage. If your tires are too big, going smaller will give you better mpg's. If your tires are too small (they'd have to be insanely small, or you'd have to have extremely low gearing), then bigger wheels and tires will help. Same with gearing. If your tires are way too big, you can actually GAIN mpg's by going with lower gears and turning higher RPM's. Both tire size and weight have a monumental impact on fuel mileage and your gearing needs to be whatever puts the least amount of stress on your engine and combination, given the circumstances (tire size, tire weight, vehicle weight, transmission, use, etc). And tire/wheel size/weight DOES indeed matter at all times, not just first gear. It matters far more than vehicle weight, and if you can imagine a 50,000lb Corvette, it would be extremely slow in a roll race and get terrible gas mileage.
same here I have tuned 16 lml, same tuner as this dude, stock wheels tires, ez lynk/y bridge/ hot-cold piping/ fass/ 2in up pipes, and I get hand calculated on the hwy 80mph Cruise max 21 to 23 with no hills or wind
That's if you're easy on the pedal and going down hill at 65 mph, heavy foot and going 75+ even stock tires 2wd you'll get 20 mpg on your best day. And that's in a 15-17. Now if you regear, delete and tune it you might see a 3-4 mpg increase but nothing crazy like the dude in the video is claiming. You likely wont even get 20 mpg on 40's WITH a regear, delete and tune.
Ty Bigos I understand you don't know what your talking about but I have an 2007.5 duramax crew cab 8ft bed 6" lift on 37" tires, EFI live tuner, 5" full exhaust and I get around 22mpg highway. you get better gas miles with diesel.

Ty Bigos well if your a manager of a "diesel performance shop" and you don't think 22mpg is possible you sir should be fired. Do you drive a diesel truck as a daily or are you just going off what people tell you? i drive my truck every day so I know what kind of highway mpg it gets.
Actually it's not...I have a 2016 GMC 3500 Shortbox Crew, which is getting 22.8 to 23.1 stock on stock rubber, stock tuning, all miles. So...I suspect, tuned, with water injection and deleted, it could be done.
Wright down your mileage when you fill up and do the math. Bigger radius on tires will change your speedo accuracy and add a load on any vehicle to which will bring down mileage per gallon. Your dash mileage meter is a bull$hit liar and confused because of the changes you did to your drivetrain. However, diesel will always get better mileage over the same vehicle if it was gas. He is probably getting around 12 to 15 miles per gallon. If it was gas, he would be around 8 to 10 mpg.

The computer added each shot of fuel that each injector is injecting into to each cylinder, and then adds up the total. This is the correct amount of diesel fuel injected. You are CORRECT, on MPG. WHAT IS MISSING IS THE AMOUNT OF DIESEL FUEL THE PARTICULATE FILTER BURNS. FUEL INJECTED TOTAL = FUEL TO THE CRANKSHAFT + FUEL THE PARTICULATE FILTER BURNS. SO BOTH YOU AND THE COMPUTERS ARE. CORRECT
I love all you people doubting this... pre all the emissions crap that was pretty common. My 2004 cummins (early 2004, the emissions stuff started 2004.5) (crew cab, long bed 7800# on 37's with a similar tune to his) can knock down 24-26 in local driving (DC metro, we get some crap traffic) if I'm being very careful, and I've gotten as high as 28 (on some hilly backroads).

I got a 2012 lml leveled on 33's and I get 24-26 on the highway...and that's in Tennessee where the roads are a constant hill! he's running bigger tires but the flat ground probably just about evens it out

Chris Cook yea my truck is deleted, straight 4 inch downpipe back exhaust so no dpf/def crap, egr is still in place but it's completely deactivated and turned off. I've got an efi live stock delete tune...so it's still stock horsepower, just tuned to let the truck run with the dpf delete and to turn off the egr system. I think the stock delete tune does kinda tweak the fuel curves and rpm parameters to get the most out of a gallon of fuel that the truck possibly can tho lol

At the start of the video your were having a hard time with your tape... you can get a little tape despencer off ebay.. the front has a sponge that you fill with water and a rolling mechanism that holds and pushes out the tape with a push of a lever...

just took trip to maggie valley nc from Florida 21 mpg stock. doing.. well above speed limit... i can see 25mpg to 26 if u do around 65 with delete and tune
That right there is some bullshit.. I am a Duramax guy and I own a 2008 LMM with no emissions equipment what so ever. I have extremely clean tuning from Duramaxtuner and I am on stock 265's.. The best and I mean the absolute best I can squeeze out of it is 23.5mpg 6th gear freeway driving in the summer and that is really trying to conserve. Typical mileage is 19-21mpg.
I agree, no modification you get is going to make up for the loss in MPG's from 40's and a 10" lift. Yeah regearing tuning and deleting helps and aftermarket intake/exhaust might help a tiny bit as well but nothing will make up for those huge tires and lift. I would say a realistic number after all possible MPG gains with mods would be 16-19 mpg on the highway and 11-14 in the city. But who even buys a 60-80k truck with 40" tires for the mpgs? If you wanted good MPG's you'd buy a car or a smaller suv like the equinox or terrain.
The one thing I do not believe you guys are taking into consideration is the fact that he has 40" tires which means his vehicle can travel a farther distance with less RPM's consider it like another overdrive gear in his transmission and because he has more horse power and torque from his mods and tuning it doesn't put as much strain on the motor to get those big wheels and tires turning . Just a thought?
Chad Maurice Doesn't matter nothing will make up for oversized tires with an aggressive tread. Even with every possible mod to increase MPG's he would be lucky to see the MPG's he got completely stock without the lift and tires.
Stock Economy Econ/Tow Street Max I run the same tuner and full delete kit from PPEi. 5" lift on 35's and the best I have seen is 27 mpg in the econ/tow mode.
Have a 2016 ram 2500, full delete, 342 gears in a 4x4 megacab. Easy 28mpg at 72 mph. Tow my 30’ toyhauler at 16,000lbs. At 65 mph and can average 13-14 mph hand calculated. Amazing when you open up this motor how well it does. Oh by the way I have the 6.7 cummins. Thx.
Both both ford and ram make a great diesel truck these years, I personally prefer the ford primarily for the 10spd that's been proven reliable and its new upgraded exaust brake. I think there is a reason huge fleets seem to prefer them.
2004 extra cab long bed Cummins AC and cruise on. At interstate speeds empty I'm around 10 or 11 miles to the gallon and that's actual fuel test filled to the very top I write the mileage and gallons down. I do the same with the next fuel receipt. And I cut miles and gallons in half to figure fuel mileage. My truck is all stock except for an air cleaner that come on it. I got 42.5 miles to the gallon but here's the catch. I was only running 40-44 miles per hour on long runs. Yes it takes forever to get somewhere but I never have to stop for fuel. RPMs around 1,050 - 1,150 about. The biggest thing with fuel mileage is slow those RPMs down with taller tires, slower speeds, gear vendor or better gear for gas mileage like in the 3.50 range 3.00 or lower. And for gas mileage no jack rabbit starts or punching it on the road. Especially if you have a newer truck with 800 - 900 foot pounds of torque. My truck is 305 horsepower and 550 foot pounds of torque. And mine is 3.73 rear gears. Around town I use to get about 10 to 11 miles to the gallon. Around town I started shifting my truck at a 1,000 RPMs it's a manual 6-speed. Most of the time I'm in 6th Gear by the time I hit 25 miles per hour. My best fuel mileage receipt is almost 19 miles per gallon. And yes shifting at a thousand RPMs the truck is very slow out of the hole slower than a tractor trailer. But it's less wear and tear on things and better fuel mileage. Of course when I pull a big load I can't shift that low I have to shift higher in RPMs in the heavier the load the higher the RPMs I have to shift and fuel mileage falls off. Drifting in neutral off of every hill helps fuel mileage. And shutting the motor down at stop lights in the day only helps fuel mileage to. I do not shut the truck off at night at a stoplight because it pulls on the batteries. Slows RPMs which equals slower speed will get better fuel mileage in anything. If you drive for a company and doesn't care drive it like you stole it. But if you drive for yourself and want to save wear and tear and fuel mileage drive it easy.
After buying a set of Bridgestone tires at Firestone here in st. Charles, Mo. a few years ago I went back to get the free tire rotation as promised and was told they don't do that . . . So! I called Firestone yesterday and a lady answered the phone at firestone and I asked about the reason for this and she said they do give free tire rotation if you purchase a new set of tires. Obviously, somebody is lying.
I have a LS1 swap in a 65 C10, it gets 30.5 mpg on the highway, 22 mpg in the city as long as I stick to the speed limit, it's hard to do with almost 400 HP under the hood.
5 years later, are you still holding on to diesel? I’m a fan of it more than unleaded because it produces more fuel efficiency as well as power. But I’ve never owned one so I can’t say from experience.
Theirs a good reason y the rest of the world except US and Canada use diesel for most SUV and Trucks. To increase the amount of oil consumed here. Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Mitsubishi and Nissan all have small diesels that have been arround forever in trucks and SUV's. Just recently Chevy started to offer the diesel built in Thailand for the Colorado. Those Toyota D4D and Ranger 5cyl diesels are an amazing engine when you ride in one but would break our gas job scam going on.

How does staying in a lower gear wear out a transmission? Why does being in a higher gear save a transmission. The gear used has nothing to do with wear however, load factors do. Heat, load, shift sequences etc. all create heat. That's what breaks down the trans fluids. Best practice is to change auto trans fluid every 25,000 miles as all the friction modifiers begin to break down with age/use/heat. Those who really believe the manufacture they can go higher intervals such as 100,000 before changing the trans fluid are in for a surprise if they own the vehicle long enough to find out.
you dont make any sense but putting big ass tires on a truck does wear a tranny out faster because it creates alot more drag and the wheels are harder to turn and that heats up ur transmission more which will eventually kill and burn up electrical parts inside as well as clutch packs

I got 22 out of a suburban 6.2 turbo diesel with 35s, but only on the trip when I could leave it in 5th gear for pretty much the whole trip It had a NV4500 swapped into it. I think I averaged like 16 on a trip where I was downshifting to third and fourth for a bunch of hills, turns
My lb7 gets about 12-14 town and 19-21 highway depending on conditions.. 20 is obtainable if it’s flat ground little wind and engine and tranny and oil are all at op temp

I dunno...I have 35's on mine and it seems hand calculated is always 0.6 MPG less than what the dash shows. I am not deleted and I have (California model) CTS-2 Evolution tuner. Depending on if a Re-gen happens at the top of a full tank of fuel or before I need to fill up I get between 16-18 (total average per tank) I have got up to 20 on the dash but it never stays at 20
I get 18 on the hwy with 35s Toyo M/Ts with the same deleted lml with a 6" lift. Before I was getting 24 with stock 265/16 R20 with no lift. I was a little shocked with the decrease in MPG but simple physics dictates the difference.
If you drive at 35mph you can get higher mpg's IE my minivan gets 41mpg @ 35mph if i have no stop/starts; but only gets 23 mpg @ 70mph. Plus his oversize tires change the computer readings .
Putting 40's and leaving stock gears lowers the hwy rpm and will get you some mileage gains on a nice flat road. The big cost is your trans taking the extra load.
Have you verified that the tune has the correct odometer adjustment. If your speedometer/odometer is incorrect you milage will be off. Easiest way to check is using a gps against your trip meter on a long highway trip. Though my LBZ was getting 22mpg until I corrected the speedometer/odometer.
bigger tires are good for highway driving but not for town smaller is better it takes more power to turn the bigger tire it will also make a difference on what tire you have i run 225 85 16 i increased my mpg by 5 mpg they are skinny for in town i get sbout 2 mpg more my truck handles better aswell

We have Ford Powerstroker and get 22 MPG without deleting. Deleting a diesel truck (removing the selective catalytic reduction and diesel particulate filter system), is illegal and carries up to a $10k fine if you get caught. And a great way to get caught is to do a video stating to the world that you deleted your truck. Good thinking.
I own a 03 cummins and it got 16.9 mpg which seemed ok as it was 250hp and a 4 speed auto and way better than my ford early 70's 4x4's with big block gas engines then I bought a 4'' from turbo exhaust a cold air intake and was getting around 24mpg then I chipped it with a quadzilla 4 stage and hit 29.9 mpg and this truck weights 8200 #'s That was a 200 mile trip on I/5 gas station to gas station .Now I run a diablosport power puck 100hp and a diablosport trinity t1000 and have yet to check my gains but love the power of just the puck and seems I'm about mid 20's mpg running local quick trips. Truck is stock height running a set of 285/70/17 toyos and I believe the gears are 3.73 .Before you say hell no try spending time and money and see what your diesel can do as when I did some basics to the wifes TDI jetta she was at 53 MPG and way more power
Nice I got a 2000 4Runner (3.4 liter ) lifted 5 inches on 285/70/17s ! (33s) and I average 17 mpg all day ! And I got 4.10 gears not bad for a gasser huh ?

If he really is rolling around on 40's with factory gearing, it's not unbelievable that on flat straight highways, he could get 26 to the gallon. without changing the gearing, larger tires will increase the final gearing, allowing for lower engine RPMs at higher wheel speeds, the downsides are the stresses you put on your motor and drive train, plus the truck would feel much less powerful when you go to pass someone as bigger tires don't accelerate as fast
Yeah my 2013 Denali w stock tire a air filter and Nitrogen tires I would average 18.7 on the low and 25.6 on the Highway if I would of done a few things i could of got better. But the down side is how much it cost to fill up and if you dont keep it full they dont as good of Mpg due to sloshing.

The diesel lane block is a pet peeve for me too, as I pull a travel trailer, and going in between pumps is an issue for me anyway, the end pump is a must!
Big tires and lifting = high maintenance, poor handling, harder on steering components/suspension, more wear, much more wind resistance, noise and no access to underground parking structures etc. There are a few gains for lifting long wheel base diesel trucks but most of it comes down to ground clearance. It's more interesting to know the percentage of off-road needed ground clearance hours vs. paved and dirt road hours. Oh, yes and then there's the looks. Even though the DPF delete is a great mod, it's a big fine when you get caught. The best solution for 2007 and newer is simply not buy them. Once the makers see the numbers drop, they will find alternative solutions that control DP that don't loot the owners out of their money. As it is, theres too much risk leaving them stock and then a legal risk modding them. Solution, let the manufactures mull on why they aren't selling many DPF/DEF/CAT/SEC rigged diesels. Maybe it would be best for the EPA to design, build, market and maintain diesel engines. That way they can get a feel for how business really functions. When that happens, they will realize all they do today is run an emissions apparatus plan that carries no value in the end.
He reads the electronic mpg readout in the dash. With 40" tires the truck will turn a lower RPM thinking that it's on stock wheels, when in fact it will take more fuel to turn those wheels. You can't recalibrate the economy readout it works using the fuel level in the has tank not by reading the amount of fuel injected. So he's far off from that.
my dads 05 ram got 23 on the highway, 3 inch leveling kit and 35 inch tires, if you tune them the right way and you dont have that stupid DEF system it makes quite the difference, these EGR systems really tend to fuck some of these diesels up
2013 Silverado 1500 Z71 with a 5.3L and I get 18 mpg highway 15 city on Michelin LTX 265/65/18s, even though the dash says 2 mpg more on each respectively. I highly doubt you get 26 or even 16 mpg doing the math.
This is a very valid point! I didn't build the truck expecting decent mileage, this video is more of me being shocked at just how good I can get. Its like having your cake and eating it too!

Since you gave no details on your calculations I can only assume that like most people, you have no clue how to calculate mileage. many people look at their "instant" MPG coasting downhill with a tailwind and think they're getting 25-30 MPG. That is NOT your average MPG.
To get your ACTUAL mileage start by filling your tank up to the neck which should be about 33-35 gallons in that you have a 36 gallon tank. Next, clear all of your averages on your heads-up display. The LML's are very accurate on the dash computer, but you'll still want to compare to your ACTUAL hand calculations. I'm also assuming that you had your tuner corrected for your current tire OD. If not you're likely cheating yourself out of some mileage. Now DRIVE till nearly empty. If you you approach 600 + miles per tank I would be very surprised. If you do have a one in a million truck that actually gets 25-26 mpg with big tires I'll gladly eat my words.......

Lifting it changes the gearing because of the bigger tire radius. It's possible that lifted trucks actually get better MPG's ironically but less torque when towing or getting out of the hole 0-60.
That only applies in 1st gear. after that it doesn't matter.
Taller tires have an overdrive effect in every gear (dropping rpms), much like changing to higher ring and pinion gears. @@peterdarr383
Turning fewer RPM's doesn't guarantee better fuel mileage. If your tires are too big, going smaller will give you better mpg's. If your tires are too small (they'd have to be insanely small, or you'd have to have extremely low gearing), then bigger wheels and tires will help.
Same with gearing. If your tires are way too big, you can actually GAIN mpg's by going with lower gears and turning higher RPM's. Both tire size and weight have a monumental impact on fuel mileage and your gearing needs to be whatever puts the least amount of stress on your engine and combination, given the circumstances (tire size, tire weight, vehicle weight, transmission, use, etc). And tire/wheel size/weight DOES indeed matter at all times, not just first gear. It matters far more than vehicle weight, and if you can imagine a 50,000lb Corvette, it would be extremely slow in a roll race and get terrible gas mileage.

That's if you're easy on the pedal and going down hill at 65 mph, heavy foot and going 75+ even stock tires 2wd you'll get 20 mpg on your best day. And that's in a 15-17. Now if you regear, delete and tune it you might see a 3-4 mpg increase but nothing crazy like the dude in the video is claiming. You likely wont even get 20 mpg on 40's WITH a regear, delete and tune.

Actually it's not...I have a 2016 GMC 3500 Shortbox Crew, which is getting 22.8 to 23.1 stock on stock rubber, stock tuning, all miles. So...I suspect, tuned, with water injection and deleted, it could be done.

Wright down your mileage when you fill up and do the math. Bigger radius on tires will change your speedo accuracy and add a load on any vehicle to which will bring down mileage per gallon. Your dash mileage meter is a bull$hit liar and confused because of the changes you did to your drivetrain. However, diesel will always get better mileage over the same vehicle if it was gas. He is probably getting around 12 to 15 miles per gallon. If it was gas, he would be around 8 to 10 mpg.

I love all you people doubting this... pre all the emissions crap that was pretty common. My 2004 cummins (early 2004, the emissions stuff started 2004.5) (crew cab, long bed 7800# on 37's with a similar tune to his) can knock down 24-26 in local driving (DC metro, we get some crap traffic) if I'm being very careful, and I've gotten as high as 28 (on some hilly backroads).

Chris Cook yea my truck is deleted, straight 4 inch downpipe back exhaust so no dpf/def crap, egr is still in place but it's completely deactivated and turned off. I've got an efi live stock delete tune...so it's still stock horsepower, just tuned to let the truck run with the dpf delete and to turn off the egr system. I think the stock delete tune does kinda tweak the fuel curves and rpm parameters to get the most out of a gallon of fuel that the truck possibly can tho lol

That's how that brown packing tape works. Usually they have a little "machine" (basically a roller) that wets the adhesive as it comes out.

That right there is some bullshit.. I am a Duramax guy and I own a 2008 LMM with no emissions equipment what so ever. I have extremely clean tuning from Duramaxtuner and I am on stock 265's.. The best and I mean the absolute best I can squeeze out of it is 23.5mpg 6th gear freeway driving in the summer and that is really trying to conserve. Typical mileage is 19-21mpg.

I agree, no modification you get is going to make up for the loss in MPG's from 40's and a 10" lift. Yeah regearing tuning and deleting helps and aftermarket intake/exhaust might help a tiny bit as well but nothing will make up for those huge tires and lift. I would say a realistic number after all possible MPG gains with mods would be 16-19 mpg on the highway and 11-14 in the city. But who even buys a 60-80k truck with 40" tires for the mpgs? If you wanted good MPG's you'd buy a car or a smaller suv like the equinox or terrain.
The one thing I do not believe you guys are taking into consideration is the fact that he has 40" tires which means his vehicle can travel a farther distance with less RPM's consider it like another overdrive gear in his transmission and because he has more horse power and torque from his mods and tuning it doesn't put as much strain on the motor to get those big wheels and tires turning . Just a thought?

Have a 2016 ram 2500, full delete, 342 gears in a 4x4 megacab. Easy 28mpg at 72 mph. Tow my 30’ toyhauler at 16,000lbs. At 65 mph and can average 13-14 mph hand calculated. Amazing when you open up this motor how well it does. Oh by the way I have the 6.7 cummins. Thx.

Both both ford and ram make a great diesel truck these years, I personally prefer the ford primarily for the 10spd that's been proven reliable and its new upgraded exaust brake. I think there is a reason huge fleets seem to prefer them.

2004 extra cab long bed Cummins AC and cruise on. At interstate speeds empty I'm around 10 or 11 miles to the gallon and that's actual fuel test filled to the very top I write the mileage and gallons down. I do the same with the next fuel receipt. And I cut miles and gallons in half to figure fuel mileage. My truck is all stock except for an air cleaner that come on it. I got 42.5 miles to the gallon but here's the catch. I was only running 40-44 miles per hour on long runs. Yes it takes forever to get somewhere but I never have to stop for fuel. RPMs around 1,050 - 1,150 about. The biggest thing with fuel mileage is slow those RPMs down with taller tires, slower speeds, gear vendor or better gear for gas mileage like in the 3.50 range 3.00 or lower. And for gas mileage no jack rabbit starts or punching it on the road. Especially if you have a newer truck with 800 - 900 foot pounds of torque. My truck is 305 horsepower and 550 foot pounds of torque. And mine is 3.73 rear gears. Around town I use to get about 10 to 11 miles to the gallon. Around town I started shifting my truck at a 1,000 RPMs it's a manual 6-speed. Most of the time I'm in 6th Gear by the time I hit 25 miles per hour. My best fuel mileage receipt is almost 19 miles per gallon. And yes shifting at a thousand RPMs the truck is very slow out of the hole slower than a tractor trailer. But it's less wear and tear on things and better fuel mileage. Of course when I pull a big load I can't shift that low I have to shift higher in RPMs in the heavier the load the higher the RPMs I have to shift and fuel mileage falls off. Drifting in neutral off of every hill helps fuel mileage. And shutting the motor down at stop lights in the day only helps fuel mileage to. I do not shut the truck off at night at a stoplight because it pulls on the batteries. Slows RPMs which equals slower speed will get better fuel mileage in anything. If you drive for a company and doesn't care drive it like you stole it. But if you drive for yourself and want to save wear and tear and fuel mileage drive it easy.
After buying a set of Bridgestone tires at Firestone here in st. Charles, Mo. a few years ago I went back to get the free tire rotation as promised and was told they don't do that . . . So! I called Firestone yesterday and a lady answered the phone at firestone and I asked about the reason for this and she said they do give free tire rotation if you purchase a new set of tires. I use a tape machine that you put water into. "Marsh H-1358" it's great. You can even set the tape length. Check it out

Theirs a good reason y the rest of the world except US and Canada use diesel for most SUV and Trucks. To increase the amount of oil consumed here. Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Mitsubishi and Nissan all have small diesels that have been arround forever in trucks and SUV's. Just recently Chevy started to offer the diesel built in Thailand for the Colorado. Those Toyota D4D and Ranger 5cyl diesels are an amazing engine when you ride in one but would break our gas job scam going on.

Staying in the higher gears would strain the transmission more, hence why you shouldn't use O/D while towing.

That's why you re-gear it when they lift it.
How does staying in a lower gear wear out a transmission? Why does being in a higher gear save a transmission. The gear used has nothing to do with wear however, load factors do. Heat, load, shift sequences etc. all create heat. That's what breaks down the trans fluids. Best practice is to change auto trans fluid every 25,000 miles as all the friction modifiers begin to break down with age/use/heat. Those who really believe the manufacture they can go higher intervals such as 100,000 before changing the trans fluid are in for a surprise if they own the vehicle long enough to find out.
you dont make any sense but putting big ass tires on a truck does wear a tranny out faster because it creates alot more drag and the wheels are harder to turn and that heats up ur transmission more which will eventually kill and burn up electrical parts inside as well as clutch packs

I got 22 out of a suburban 6.2 turbo diesel with 35s, but only on the trip when I could leave it in 5th gear for pretty much the whole trip It had a NV4500 swapped into it. I think I averaged like 16 on a trip where I was downshifting to third and fourth for a bunch of hills, turns

I dunno...I have 35's on mine and it seems hand calculated is always 0.6 MPG less than what the dash shows. I am not deleted and I have (California model) CTS-2 Evolution tuner. Depending on if a Re-gen happens at the top of a full tank of fuel or before I need to fill up I get between 16-18 (total average per tank) I have got up to 20 on the dash but it never stays at 20
I get 18 on the hwy with 35s Toyo M/Ts with the same deleted lml with a 6" lift. Before I was getting 24 with stock 265/16 R20 with no lift. I was a little shocked with the decrease in MPG but simple physics dictates the difference.
If you drive at 35mph you can get higher mpg's IE my minivan gets 41mpg @ 35mph if i have no stop/starts; but only gets 23 mpg @ 70mph. Plus his oversize tires change the computer readings .

Putting 40's and leaving stock gears lowers the hwy rpm and will get you some mileage gains on a nice flat road. The big cost is your trans taking the extra load.
Have you verified that the tune has the correct odometer adjustment. If your speedometer/odometer is incorrect you milage will be off. Easiest way to check is using a gps against your trip meter on a long highway trip. Though my LBZ was getting 22mpg until I corrected the speedometer/odometer.

We have Ford Powerstroker and get 22 MPG without deleting. Deleting a diesel truck (removing the selective catalytic reduction and diesel particulate filter system), is illegal and carries up to a $10k fine if you get caught. And a great way to get caught is to do a video stating to the world that you deleted your truck. Good thinking.

I own a 03 cummins and it got 16.9 mpg which seemed ok as it was 250hp and a 4 speed auto and way better than my ford early 70's 4x4's with big block gas engines then I bought a 4'' from turbo exhaust a cold air intake and was getting around 24mpg then I chipped it with a quadzilla 4 stage and hit 29.9 mpg and this truck weights 8200 #'s That was a 200 mile trip on I/5 gas station to gas station .Now I run a diablosport power puck 100hp and a diablosport trinity t1000 and have yet to check my gains but love the power of just the puck and seems I'm about mid 20's mpg running local quick trips. Truck is stock height running a set of 285/70/17 toyos and I believe the gears are 3.73 .Before you say hell no try spending time and money and see what your diesel can do as when I did some basics to the wifes TDI jetta she was at 53 MPG and way more power

If he really is rolling around on 40's with factory gearing, it's not unbelievable that on flat straight highways, he could get 26 to the gallon. without changing the gearing, larger tires will increase the final gearing, allowing for lower engine RPMs at higher wheel speeds, the downsides are the stresses you put on your motor and drive train, plus the truck would feel much less powerful when you go to pass someone as bigger tires don't accelerate as fast
Yeah my 2013 Denali w stock tire a air filter and Nitrogen tires I would average 18.7 on the low and 25.6 on the Highway if I would of done a few things i could of got better. But the down side is how much it cost to fill up and if you dont keep it full they dont as good of Mpg due to sloshing.

The diesel lane block is a pet peeve for me too, as I pull a travel trailer, and going in between pumps is an issue for me anyway, the end pump is a must!
Big tires and lifting = high maintenance, poor handling, harder on steering components/suspension, more wear, much more wind resistance, noise and no access to underground parking structures etc. There are a few gains for lifting long wheel base diesel trucks but most of it comes down to ground clearance. It's more interesting to know the percentage of off-road needed ground clearance hours vs. paved and dirt road hours. Oh, yes and then there's the looks. Even though the DPF delete is a great mod, it's a big fine when you get caught. The best solution for 2007 and newer is simply not buy them. Once the makers see the numbers drop, they will find alternative solutions that control DP that don't loot the owners out of their money. As it is, theres too much risk leaving them stock and then a legal risk modding them. Solution, let the manufactures mull on why they aren't selling many DPF/DEF/CAT/SEC rigged diesels. Maybe it would be best for the EPA to design, build, market and maintain diesel engines. That way they can get a feel for how business really functions. When that happens, they will realize all they do today is run an emissions apparatus plan that carries no value in the end.
He reads the electronic mpg readout in the dash. With 40" tires the truck will turn a lower RPM thinking that it's on stock wheels, when in fact it will take more fuel to turn those wheels. You can't recalibrate the economy readout it works using the fuel level in the has tank not by reading the amount of fuel injected. So he's far off from that.
AND deleting your truck requires tuning and tuning just f*cks the economy readout
When you say deleted and tune what exactly do you mean? I have a 2017 Chevy Silverado z71 and hate my MPG any suggestions would be great!!

my dads 05 ram got 23 on the highway, 3 inch leveling kit and 35 inch tires, if you tune them the right way and you dont have that stupid DEF system it makes quite the difference, these EGR systems really tend to fuck some of these diesels up
2013 Silverado 1500 Z71 with a 5.3L and I get 18 mpg highway 15 city on Michelin LTX 265/65/18s, even though the dash says 2 mpg more on each respectively. I highly doubt you get 26 or even 16 mpg doing the math.

This is a very valid point! I didn't build the truck expecting decent mileage, this video is more of me being shocked at just how good I can get. Its like having your cake and eating it too!
I hear you , it's hard to have both looks and a awesome daily!! Look into swapping your cp4 to cp3 , way more tuning options way more fuel capability.👍
