I played a game where my opponent couldn't win a rook and 6 vs rook and 1 against me. He lost 4 pawns, we traded rooks and it was and h and g vs h. Traded a pawn and it was just king and rook pawn v king and that's a super easy draw.

@@JSamad It's not so simple, since your opponent can blockade your pawns with his king and bishop.
Or try to sacrifice his bishop for all of your pawns leaving you with no winning chances.
Imo outta all the piece endgames - bishop endgames are the hardest in general.
Cuz unlike queen, rook or knight endgames, one bishop alone only controls 32 squares of the chessboard max - aka 50% of the board
Unlike the other pieces who can control any square on the board.

Hey Gotham! Thanks for the video! For you, or anyone else in the comments, I had a question about getting my rook to the sixth rank in the Vancura position.
I like drilling endgame exercises against the computer on chess.com, and when I plugged in the Vancura position, I found that white was refuting my attempts to get to the sixth rank. The way they would do this was after 1. ...Ra1, white would play Kf4, with the intention to reach the e5 square. After 2. Kf4, Rf1+ 3. Ke5, Rf6, white has a winning tactic with 4. Rg8+, Kxg8 5. Kxf6, and the pawn is free to queen. I wanted to know if giving white the extra tempo by playing something like 2. ...Rc1 in order to reach the 6th rank instead of checking to reach the sixth rank was okay.
    Thanks!

Great content as always! I really noticed the audio ducking in this episode, it feels like every time you take a breath the entire video is muted

Can you make a video about how to deal with defeats? I generally feel angry or sad after lose a couple (or more...) of games. Great content again! Thanks!

8:15 Why would black rook move to e2 to give check? It can just stay on F file and keep threatening the pawn and king can't zig zag anywhere. I don't get it.

If the rook stays on the f file, notice there is always Rd5 for white to keep Black's king cut off and to be ready for Rf5 cutting Black's rook from the pawn. Let's consider the following line:
      1. ... Rf3
      2. Rd5 Rf4
      3. Rf5
Black's king cannot reach f8, neither can rook, so pawn promotes no matter what

Know end games give you more possibilities in attack that only go for mate

It would be awesome if you made a lesson about passed pawns. like when should I think about trying to make a passed pawn.

    The first example:
    King: LET ME IN!!!
Rook: Do you have an entry ticket?
    King: No...
Rook: Then you're not allowed to cross the c line
    King: F*ck

I just played a game (2nd or 3rd one after watching this video) where I was able to get a draw with the rook vs rook and pawn. This really helped.

Literally ended up with a king+rook+few pawns on both sides game just yesterday. I had the upper hand throughout the game but it slipped outta my hand. I ultimately lost on time but I fucked up majorly before then. Wish I watched this video earlier.

The thing is it seems like white is winning, not so much because he's up a pawn, but because the pawns he can free are closer to promoting. That's what always trips me up, and it seems like it takes a lot of time (like in blitz) to count who would promote first.

Did any other Smash Brothers fans out there think that the Lucena position was spelled with an I instead on an E, or was that just me?

    • @ChessInstructorSF

According to Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luis_Ram%C3%ADrez_de_Lucena) it is with an E.

Rook endgame was the first thing I have learned in chess. Still amazed how easy it sometimes is to trick someone with a simple rook + king checkmate at 1100 even from the losing material standpoint.
