I was grinding on the same spot. I had Glenn with Warrior class for AoE attack, removed Lenne because she just didn't help and made the battle longer, and most of the time I could finish the battle with 1 Glenn + 1 Killian/Sienna AoE attacks. It's not worth running away to get the rare ones, it's easier to just finish the combat and teleport again.
It definitely draws inspiration from a great many games, the intro is chrono trigger, where your mom wakes you up. The sky armor are similar to 'gears' from xeno. The npc recruitment and base building is suikoden, the progression is a mix of final fantasy games. There are so many refrences, the adventurer's guild and bounties as well as the story feel very much like ff 12, and there are a few other eater eggs referring to the ivalice games, tactics, vagrant story and ff 12. Such a great rpg.
I underestimated the power of those weapon/armor upgrades...Didn't start actually upgrading stuff until after the group rejoined and it made a world of difference. Was thinking every fight seemed to be so hard previously even on normal mode due to how hard the enemies hit and how little damage I did.
I just finished the game. For new viewers: Focus on (good) passives, stats, skills. I beat the game without learning most of the action(actual) skills. Only a feel really matter, with some characters. Don't go crazy on it. Stats are pretty much anything and the passives are the real deal. HP UP, ATK UP, HP DRAIN (Glenn), AGI UP, etc, etc. Once I paid attention to these, equiped and leveled using this spot to farm, the game was a breeze. Until Rockbottom, every fight used to be a pain in the ass, almost like a boss fight every time. I didn't even need to use crystal, upgrade my latter equips, etc. If I had more time (I had to rush cuz' of gamepass), I'd gladly prepare myself even further. What a great game.
0:30 Chrono Cross Chrono Cross Chrono Cross! Sorry lol. I was really bothered when you didn't say Chrono Cross was the basis of the leveling system lol. It was made for the same reasons. Star Levels make it so that the game can be scaled a lot easier so that the cast is at a set level of raw power before getting to a certain point and typically can not grind above the threshold of the plots difficulty (At least till End Game where you open up quests to get your last Star Levels). Again, Sorry lol.
Whenever you defeat an enemy, you will gain sp in both all your skills as well as your saved up sp. Sienna had already gained a lot of SP in her Yoko Giri and Petal Storm
Yeah they patched something it seems... I'm not getting nearly as many SP and it costs WAY more to upgrade my abilities now. Think I'll play Sea of Stars instead.
You took 3 minutes of rambling before you declared the best way to break the game was to grind on the weakest enemies at the start of the game that give the least SP. I want my three minutes back.

Did they update this? He only needs 22 sp to upgrade most of his skills. Most of mine at level 1 are like 190-240.

Uhm....I can't seem to level any skills. I just get a sound as if I press the wrong button when trying.
Sorry, never ran into that issue, unless you are trying to learn new skills, those require star level not skill points.

There are statues in some of the areas that you need sacred water to activate, then if you win a fight you get a new job.
