This is my reaction to Roy and HG on Aussies Hating Yanks and Kiwis (Sydney Olympics 2000)
In this video I react to comedians Roy and HG talking about whether people from Australia really dislike people from American and New Zealand. I believe this was part of a show that covered Sydney Olympics 2000. Tell me more about it.

It was great because the American athletes - especially Drummond - had been criticised in the Australian media for being arrogant, overly-flashy, and all that stuff. Then he shows up on Roy & HG and it turns out he's a friendly, articulate, humble young guy with a sense of humour and the ability to laugh at himself. Great memories all around from this show, but I feel like this is the moment that always first comes to mind when I remember The Dream.

A story I so hope is true - Apparently some of the International Olympic Committee were incensed by Roy and HG and wanted them taken off the air. The response was "There are very few things that could invoke a violent revolution in Australia. But doing that would be one of them. If they were silenced, the entire army of volunteers and staff running the olympics would walk off the job immediately." (Mind you, the fact that one of the IOC heads had the name 'Dick Pound" was an absolute gift to Roy and HG.

Roy and HG are fictional characters played by two Australian comedians, who over many decades have presented as a comedic sports commentating duo on both radio and tv in Australia. The Dream was, and remains their greatest piece of work together, as for those few weeks of the Sydney games, more tuned into the comedy stylings after the events each night, than the actual events. Their presence within Australian sporting events maintained through the years via radio and sporadic tv shows. They continue to broadcast together to this day via their podcast Roy & HG. Long live The Dream!

The show’s mascot “Fatso the big-arsed wombat” (a stuffed toy) was so popular that one of the Australian swim relay teams took him with them onto the medal podium; much to the dismay of the Games Committee. Their wrestling, gymnastics and diving commentary is the stuff of legend, including the mascot diving competition on the final night with the actual Channel 7 commentators. First few nights I think most weren't quite aware it was even on, but after that word got around they were on fire and that the show was hilarious, it all snowballed from there - not only did the entire nation and our guests to the games tune in at that point, but it made international headlines. I lived in the US for a while 93-94. Pre internet. My Dad would tape (cassette tapes, remember them)"This sporting life", and "Australia All Over" every week and send it to us. We listened to it all, the little slice of home kept us sane.
One weekend the running commentary was about Muhammad Ali, who had just made an appearance in our local mall in Louisville Ky. Ali grew up there, great serendipity.

But this show showcased their amazing humour and craziness, nearly everyone stayed up to watch it each night of the Olympics and it got better and better over the 2 weeks, the final show was the perfect climax. Roy and HG (real names John Doyle and Greig Pickhaver) were famous here for doing live sports commentary with a comedy twist. They had wicked senses of humour. Many people used to tune into their live commentary on the radio for certain events, rather than listening to the somewhat boring professional TV commentators.

  • @colincolenso

Roy & HG are pretty prolific comedic satire content creators on radio and television. During the Sydney Olympics of 2000, they were not the official channel and didn't have access to live events, but they'd clip out various oddities from each day and provide hilarious commentary making up fake terms for the various maneuvers, like flippity flip and ball buster and so on, esp w/ to gymnastics. They'd also highlight all the falls, and messed up dives and so on. They created their own Wombat icon which became far more popular than the official merch. They also had much bigger ratings than the officially licensed broadcasting network. Athletes even got in trouble for carrying the wombat merch around at events.

Just confirming what Larry Levinsky said. Yes, The Dream with Roy & HG was on Channel 7, the official broadcaster. I was part of Channel 7 then, and it's fair to say that there were mixed views internally as to how the Dream would be received. Their satire wasn't even known to all Australians at the time, let alone overseas athletes and fans. But everyone associated with the show did an amazing job. There was just enough conventional comedy (eg Fatso, the wrestling and gymnastics commentary etc) to bring newcomers along, so that their satire could be seen in context. Towards the end of the games so many overseas athletes were wanting to be featured.

Hey mate, yep - to your question - this was a show that ran alongside the official coverage to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Most Aussies watched this every night.
Roy and HG had long established themselves as deeply-informed, comedic commentators on major sporting events. As a kid we would often have their radio commentary on one of our biggest footy spectacles in the Australian tradition: the State of Origin. This was pitting footy players who started their professional careers in either New South Wales (The Blues) vs Queensland (The Maroons) against each other in an often-bloody-and-emotional grudge match. Roy and HG were so unspeakably funny that we would mute the sound on the official televised coverage and watch the match alongside Roy and HG's live comedic coverage over the radio - this was done in many households.
So glad our Scottish brothers have discovered this source of Australian pride 🙂

You have to look for the parts of this show featuring "Fatso The Fat arsed Wombat" he was a stuffed toy. People from other countries actually thought he was our official mascot. He was simply dreamt up by the team at Roy and HG and all the athletes wanted one, they were all swapping what ever they could for, the top swap, "Fatso" and second swap was for one of the pins that these American athletes were so excited about receiving. All the athletes came into the temporary studio, it was so popular and we all watched it at home. 2 experienced comedians who bumped into each other and discovered they had a connection talking shit that they both understood and enjoyed.
So they teamed up as Roy and HG ( Nelson ) and created a very funny “ expert media commentary” comedy phenomena.
Although popular mostly on radio, so not very well known, the Sydney Olympics gave them late night TV exposure and catapulted them to giant ratings and success.
Tennis superstar Billie Jean King fell in love with them and let every American athlete and official know about them..
Talking shit has always been popular in Australia between close friends and even relatives who might actually like each other....... but parents often hate it and grand parents just don’t get it. lol
Of course now after the Sydney Olympics all America is into talking shit and once we teach the Poms real English , then they can understand and enjoy this subtle linguistic art form. 😂

Sydney 2000 was such a huge huge coming of age moment for Australia. The biggest test and ultimately official stamp of approval on the country's place in the modern world. Anyway, this show, and it's success, and having famous foreign athletes come on and enjoy it was kindof an extension of all that.
