I was a volunteer over from Perth. Used to love coming home to the place I was staying in collaroy and watching these boys with a beer. One of the best parts of my time there, incredible memories. Especially around Erik the eel and fatso
Back when I first started listening to them, Roy and HG had a 4-5 hour block on the Radio once a week called 'This Sporting Life'. Between them, they've managed to get that sports commentary delivery-style so locked down it can be difficult to tell whether they're taking the piss or not. Everything's done pretty much deadpan, and a lot of the things they say are no sillier or weirder than actual sports commentary. They're just national treasures, the pair of them.
Used to work in a drive-thru bottle shop Saturday afternoons in Sydney and Roy & HG were played on the radio - great times as people would drive thru pick up their drinks to or from sport. Fun times
This got so entangled in our language during this time. I remember my very young son had a bit of a ‘splits’ accident at school, and the teacher called me and described the incident as follows ‘As Roy and HG would say, he has a battered sav with flat bags’. I then knew exactly what I was dealing with, and suitable sympathy was given.
It was meant to be a late night afterthought, but instead Roy and HG became the heart, soul and highlight of the Olympics every day. It was a wonderful two weeks I'll never forget. I also had the joy of playing "Fatso" in the games text chat rooms every night. What a fantastic time! So much fun!... My favourite texting moment was when someone asked "Are you the real Fatso?" I answered, "Of course not, wombats can't type.".. 🙂🙃🙂🙂🙃🙂
They used to have Athletes lining up to be on their show during the Sydney Olympics. They are amazing we couldnt get enough of them. They used to have a show called "Club Buggery" and it was hiliarious. Just raw bloody talent.
Is that the radio show they had on Triple JJJ Saturday arvo back in the late 80s early 90s? Just saw the next comment and remembered it was this sporting life. Remember Club Buggery though.😂😂😂
OMG I’m crying 😂 This show was a religion in Australia, I would be in stitches every night. These two were geniuses. Thanks MSTV for the great memories
The two weeks these men were commentating on our Olympics was arguably the pinnacle of sports commentary anywhere in the world. Never again shall we experience the complete hijacking of a world wide sporting event such as we saw here. Roy and HG remain the gold standard that all commentators should aim to emulate.
We were all utterly exhausted from staying up to watch Roy and HG every night. They absolutely were the cherry on the top of the 2000 olympics here in 🇦🇺

Thanks for playing this video. I was in stitches when I watched it years ago. Still hilarious years later. Roy and HG are legends. Never out dated. Hehe.
I was 12 and danced in the opening and closing ceremonies and Roy & HG did a fabulous piss take of the official Olympic mascots before flogging their own in their into. It was hysterical. But it was only something you heard if there. When I watched it on TV commenters on other channels talked over it. I wish it had all been broadcast as well.
Whenever you had Roy & HG commentating on any sport back in the day, it was absolutely mandatory for everyone watching (us Aussies) to turn down the official commentary & turn UP Roy & HG’s commentary when we got to see them. They MADE the Sydney Olympics a truly special event & one that I’ll never forget. Many overseas visitors would ask me “are those guys for real?” (about Roy & HG) & I would respond with “they are as REAL as you can possibly get” 👍😂. The absolute BEST & funniest commentary team ever 👏😂. Calling their own move names were a true highlight 😜👌
What happened to all that, the ABC use to create great commentary to publicly broudcasted stuff? It is not illegal to do it, but we do now have some very corporate owned people on the ABC board.
I remember Prof Fred Hollows being interviewed in the stands at a NRL grand final for TV and he was holding a radio and wearing an earpiece. The interviewer asked him which football commentary did he listen to and he said almost indignantly "Roy and HG of course"

You were smiling and laughing before you started to watch them. I’ve been listening to them for 30 yrs. Started on pirate recordings on cassette tape I think from the old JJ radio station in Sydney. Classic stuff and this Olympic night show was up at the top. Brilliant light relief. We used to watch the annual state of origins NSW QLD league with the official commentary turned down on the tv and Roy n HG on the radio. Epic and unforgettable.
Their best commentary one for me was when they called the Melbourne cup. I think it was as if Roy was riding Phar Lap in the race. Like most of what they did was comic gold.
I liked Allan Langer’s nickname. He played with “King” Wally Lewis so they nicknamed him “Deborah Kerr” - because she acted beside Yul Brynner in ‘The King and I’

I still think of the battered sav, tool box, and hello boys ,flat bag ect, every time I see mens gymnastics 😂
My son and i were glued to the tele , when Roy and H.G were on
Absolutely love Roy & HG. When the Olympics was on I just had our daughter by C-section and was in hospital in Sydney. It hurt to laugh and I laughed til I cried!! Was so worried I’d burst a stitch. Bought it when it came out on video so I could have a proper belly laugh! Their humour just doesn’t get old!!
Memories whatever happened to Roy & HG? You goose. Geeze remember used to have senses of humour 23 years ago 🤣
Battered sav!!!! These guys are so good. Our country loves them. 🇦🇺
Omg I remember this, it never gets old. They are the only reason I started watching men’s gymnastics
Great video, I love Roy and HG, they are missed here in Oz.
They are still commentating - "Bludging on the Blindside" every Saturday on ABC radio from 12 till 2.
Still on free 3 air telly 2
From memory the rings men's commentary was gold.😂
I was a volunteer at these Games and actually working at the Gymnastics but not in a position to watch the action. I was either still working or travelling home when this show was on. . I used to hear how good it was but never saw it. This is the first clip I have seen and I have tears of laughter 😂 watching it. OMG! I am going to have to watch all these clips now. Thank you for posting them.
Gawd that brings back memories. Roy and HG were in classic form at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. I'm still laughing. 😂😂
I think it was their commentary on Greco-Roman wrestling that got me.
Absolutely hilarious. 👍👏👏 I remember this very well being screened on TV during the Olympics. Nothing but the best. Then they double it for the winter Olympics, the ice dream.
