- A mix of Progressive, House and Hard House. Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Carl Cox and Sasha each put in a studio mix for BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix series. This four installment series was from May 1995 and ranks with me as one of my all time favourite Essential Mix sessions. Each has a unique style but for my money Sasha and Carl Cox's mixes are the best. Enjoy and let me know what you think?

I was in my first year at Uni and remember buying this at Our Price in Farnham. Great times. The essential selection on radio 1 every Friday before going at had been THE show to listen to. Good times.

This is when the whole Cream/Oakenfold/superstar DJ/superclub thing really began to gather speed. Oakenfold was really on top of his game between 95 -2000 and this catches him right at the start of that purple patch, just before he began his residency at Cream I think, although I think he was resident in the Annex in Cream around this time before he went on to the Courtyard. we were spoilt rotten, really, and I'm glad that I experienced all this because dance music now and the ridiculous so called EDM these days is utter shite.
Oakenfold didn't take his residence up until 97. The Courtyard had been open a year prior to that. Coxy took his Ultimatum Tour there in the February of 96 and brought it down long before PO's arrival.

@@spud74 Oakenfold started playing his Cream residency in that little room, before he went to the big Courtyard. The latter was a nicer space, but when he first started he used to demo far more unreleased Perfecto (and related) tracks - often pausing the beat-mixing to play the new tunes in full.
Regardless, he did great work at Cream. Better than Judge Jules, who could play really great house/progressive/trance sets - but his own remixes were pretty terrible back then!
Guy Graham he didn’t mate, he took up the Courtyard as his home throughout 97. He played the odd night in Zoo Bar, the smaller room off main room in Cream

Oakey at his absolute PRIME. Such a brilliant blend of genres skillfully bookended by the beautiful Runaway and by Jam El Mar's (of Jam & Spoon) phenomenal remix of Oakenfold and Steve Osborne's gorgeous track 'Sun'. EPIC!
Prodigy-Skylined....what a tune! Reminds me of Weather Experience yrack off their first album. Essential to any progressive set.
I bought some technics 1210s in 1996 and had these tunes - I used to live across the road from the Sanctuary rave venue in MK and had many after party sessions listening to these beautiful tunes. Those days were amazing - really amazing - words cant describe the reality

'95 was a vintage year for sure. We used to get (now current) superstars come play our dingy clubs, with an eclectic bag of records.
Oakenfold was particularly impressive, as he would debut new Perfecto tracks that went on to become big hits!
The opening track still gives me goosebumps when I hear it. I’m transported back to a wonderful time of my life, clubbing every weekend and making new friends. What a classic album.
I'm 40 this year and it brings back so many fuzzy memories. ha

I used to record onto mini-disc 1999-2003. Was perfect and easy to edit each track and put in track names via mixmag listing.
I was 17 and BRAND NEW to THIS MUSIC.... I only remember bits and pieces of this series even though I have heard the whole thing numerous times....Im 37 now and it still sounds as good as it did when I was 17. I like all of the mixes in this series BUT Oakenfold stands out among the other three... imo.. 18:31= :)

I'm 38 mate and agree completely although id have to give 5he top slot to sasha out of the 4. On the abstract choices of record. Sasha and oakenfold are without doubt the legal owners of dance music

It's 1995, im proper young but feeling old/experienced because of albums like this. Pumping this out in an Astra GTE back in the day and feeling that base like I'm not off my nut. Still sounds good to this day in 2018. Crazy shit
James Brewer - you sir are a legend. This mix still sounds amazing 20 years later. Oakey at his peak. Remembering the days of getting back from the club, music in the car, blazing in the back, and then back to a mates house for the come down session. Will never forget those times.

My twin brother landed home with this back in the day, got us into dance music in a big way, even to this day. Radio 1 essential mix every weekend, Pete Tong introducing us to new and up and coming DJ's just tonight we replayed Hernan Cattaneo Creamfields 25.08.2002.

Nice one James I prefer the oakenfold mix personally but all awesome my legendary dance music djs of all time . We listened to this a lot when it was released I was around 18 then . Great memories bro thanks for putting it in here to share with us .
This CD Collection is probably THE best compilation available. I think because it was one of, if not the 1st big name multi mix disc Collection. Guaranteed goosebumps every time.

This was playing in the campsite at t in the park 1996, as I was freaking my beans on acid. Never forgot and took me almost 27 years to find out what was playing. The evoke tune at the beginning dragged me deeper into oblivion.

If only Oakie's mixing ability matched his taste in music. Him and Rampling were absolutely dire live sometimes. Sasha, Digweed and Ian Ossia were seriously capable at mixing. You'd struggle to capture their essence in a radio mix. You had to walk into Renaissance at 12am and remain there until 8am when Sasha would turn the lights on.
I always thought it didn't really matter, provided you had ace tunes at your disposal and knew exactly when to drop them, you can overcome that. Oakey had those 2 things which overcame his inability to mix seamlessly The music can be seamlessly mixed by a good DJ but still be terribly dull and not make you dance. God Sasha could be incredibly dull for this at some points in is career.
Agree actually, Oakenfolds mixing was dire in Hull 98 however was great at Hull university with Boy George. Oh man that was a night!!!
This was a set at tall tree's in yarm , not radio mix . It was live I was there
Sasha wasn't always that great, I've been at parties where the atmosphere was off the scale but his mixing was appalling, I've seen him abandon the decks to get on the dancefloor, that was when he still had a pony tail :-) He's still one of my all time DJ heroes though
but he did correct those earlier double vocal hummers!!
