I love how Zoe isn’t afraid to show she isn’t grieving Connor. Everyone expects people to make the dead person sound like a god (they were such a good friend etc), but she didn’t with no regrets. Proud of u Zoe
I mean sometimes it's perfectly normal not to grieve when someone dies, and in this situation its perfectly normal so I agree completely.
She does grieve a little, after all it was her brother. She just isn't as upset as expected

This song is amazing, because it portrays the feelings of both seeing another side of someone (Cynthia) after their death, and the feeling of not being able to mourn because you weren't on the best of terms with them (Zoe), But it also portrays a middle ground where you would like to mourn but cannot as you've done so much but yet they don't appreciate it (Larry)
Larry did nothing. When Connor first tried to kill himself, he literally said that his son just wanted attention.
Zoe is upset with herself cause she doesn’t grieve Connor like everyone else did.. you can’t blame her, He was a dick to her their whole childhood. (Zoe says Connor Verbally abused her but Connor said he didn’t?) And Cynthia feels that Connor is in a better place. Larry didn’t give a shit about Connor. He also didn’t try to help and/or Understand Him like Zoe and Cynthia did....

I don't think you should feel any type of way toward him. We don't know him. We know he was distressed, high all the time, and abusive in a lot of way. But that's only what he was projecting. Everything else was a lie from Evan so I think neutral or neutral-slightly-negative is probably where you're supposed to be (since the guy being abusive is a big nono but him killing himself means he regrets it and was deeply unhappy, making his circumstances and intent more complex and dubious which sort of balances itself out.)
Neutral is fine tho. I'm sad to say but life isn't black and white (sorry Zoe). I'm neutral to every characters in this musical except for Zoe and Heidi (I wouldn't say I like Heidi tho I just have a lot of respect for her which makes me think of her in a positive way more than neutral)

I’m literally scrolling through the comments and everyone has said the things I want to say. So I’m just gonna say this.
This song destroys me. Gorgeous vocals by the one and only Laura, and the parents add the other emotional elements and show the different processes of grief which is..well which is amazing in a way.
I just want to sob after I listen to this, but after I listen to it I also have this full of “life” feeling if that makes any sense. It gives you a sense of warmth. Almost as if you can relate to these fictional characters. As if you are these characters.
These writers Justin Paul and Benj Pasek are the modern Mozart’s and Da Vinci’s of modern broadway music.
I’m glad this show was created. It helped a lot of people. It helped me.

sometimes I'm just feeling that everyone of us is Zoe and Connor at the same time. like, everybody has issues, everyone of us is a monster sometimes. and everyone is hurting, because of others behaviour, and we just want to forget about them, but it's impossible.

I'm listening to this song on repeat for my best friend. At the summer camp she's going to in a week, they have a talent show at the end. She wants to sing this song and I want to help teach her the lyrics. I wish I could sing with her, but my social anxiety stops me and I don't go to that camp. I'm seeing a therapist who helps some, but I'm still terrified. I have no idea why I'm writing a comment about this, since nobody cares or reads these comments, but... Well, wish us luck. With her talent show and with my social anxiety.

Every time I listen to this song, I end up sobbing & screaming. It reminds me of my brother so much. My brother use to abuse me as a way to take his anger put, & now he’s dabbling more & more into drugs. I find no sympathy in me whenever something bad happens to him.
I hope you and your brother get better (both with how you are doing and also your relationship)
I love this song! Connor reminds me of my oldest brother who has been a slave to drug addiction, depression, and anger issues for a few years. I think this song and Zoe's performance all together really shows people how it feels to be in that kind of situation of its your brother so u have to love him but u also hate him for all that he's put u and ur family through.

Anyone you’re not with anymore - not just because of death, but because of a break-up, or moving away from a toxic family member, or cutting someone out of your life.
Anyone who has been through such things will be able to sing with near-full empathic understanding.

I relate to this song so much bc my sister was abusive my whole life and it only stopped when she was forced to move out. She tried moving back in but was forced back out a few months later after continuing to play the victim of the abuse. I only started fighting back after she moved back in and continued the cycle. I felt like I had to forgive and like her just bc we were blood related, but as of right now she's completely out of my life and I haven't spoken to her since she left. She's visiting for three weeks in april and may for her birthday and my other sisters graduation and I'm not sure how I'll receive her. I love how this song is written to show her thoughts of guilt for not grieving hard enough bc I feel that.
I can listen to this as background noise but when I remember THIS song is playing, I can't help but sing it...

I hate Larry's verse in this song. Just because you bought him what he wanted, just because you gave him things, that doesn't mean you gave him the world. He was severely depressed because you didn't love him. He just wanted love and attention, but of course you were too caught up in your own problems to realise that, and now your son is dead because you didn't pay attention to him.

Are you kidding? In the musical he was definitely there. He wanted to give him attention and spend time with him, even bought a baseball glove to play games with Connor and have fun together but Connor pushed him away. He tried giving Connor the world, but didn’t know Connor was hurting inside. How is he supposed to help that? He didn’t know any better. He didn’t know Connor was hurting. That’s part of depression. Faking that you’re fine. Don’t shame his father for not knowing any better. After all, he was able to be there for Evan when he felt skeptical about his mom.

Also Larry liked Evan cause Evan listened and Evan appreciated Larry because Evan never had a father. I get that but that's because Evan listened just because Connar didn't listen that one time just doesn't mean you should give up on you're son I don't think Larry's a terrible person but he's a terrible father
I resonate with this song so much. I have a drug addict, mentally/physically abusive brother (who actually triggered my ptsd from previous abuse so much so often that he re-gave me ptsd). Everyone expects me to love him and care about him, but he's hurt me so much I can't anymore. To be honest, if he were to pass, I think I would feel the same way Zoe does. I just can't miss him. I'm so glad I'm finally moving out leaving him behind in a week. Years of abuse will finally come to an end.

@@guilhermeshiba3135There’s no confirmation that Connor regularly abused her. Neither Zoe nor Connor (in the book) confirms if what Zoe claims happened multiple times. And in the book, Connor even denies threatening her. I’m not saying he didn’t hurt her, he clearly did and Zoe had every right not to mourn him, but we literally don’t know what actually happened.

My abusive mother killed herself. I never felt it in me to cry for her. I did, however, cry for my family when I saw how much pain it put them through. But I have never once shed a tear for her death. If she wanted me to cry about it, she shouldn't have been so horrible.
