That whole Alpha thing really gets under my skin - the implication by Reed Richards is that somehow Alpha-level means "more than Omega", but that has _never_ been the way that's used. Omega is the _end_ of things, derived from it being the last letter in the Greek alphabet, the equivalent of Z (with Alpha being, of course, being equivalent to A). When the Bible says, "I am the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega", it's like saying, "from A to Z". So surely, an Alpha-level threat means they have the _least_ amount of power - like, they're a completely normal human except for the mutant ability to change their hair colour once a week or something. I guess that _could_ present a "superhuman threat" if they robbed a bank with red hair and then changed their hair colour to blue in order to disguise themselves and make a getaway, but it's about as far away from godlike omnipotence as you can get while still being considered "superhuman". What I'm saying is, Reed Richards of all people - a man who not only has a genius-level intellect but is also well-read and highly-educated - would surely know how _stupid_ he sounded declaring that Parker's employee was "more than Omega-level, he's _Alpha-level",_ when that would - by definition - mean he was several magnitudes _less_ powerful. What _really_ gets my goat is that, since this story, I've seen other mentions in comic circles of Alpha-level being canonically described as "beyond Omega-level"... and all that does is spread the stupid around.
I think it makes sense in the way if you consider Beginning and Ending. Omega Level Mutants are world ending threats, Alpha Level Mutants would be so powerful that they'd be effectively gods and theoretically unstoppable. Like Thor is a god, but he can meet his match, this would be like "Could survive Ultimate Nullifier" kinda power.
@@Forestxavier20 Except that God Tier Mutants are called Omega Level. Franklin Richards and Legion, the two most powerful characters in Marvel (Franklin, depending on the writer) are both cited as being Omega Level. They are at the _end_ of the power scale. Where there are no limits. This story was a case of the writer not looking into this and thinking they were using new terminology.
@@pious83 You say that as if the comics writers are limited by previously established concepts. Franklin Richards is near limitless in power, he can control fundamental elements of the universe, but that barely scratches the surface. There are characters that have or can reach a power level to be basically God. Gwenpool for example is effectively a creator deity at the end of her run. Not "has the powers of a god" or "can manipulate the fundamentals of the universe" but she is insinuated to be drawing the Marvel Universe at that point. Literal godlike control of everyone. To borrow one from DC for a moment, Darkseid is also a similar concept, an omniversal presence that manifests himself in every reality to get the Anti-Life Equation? You can kill him, you can stop him, but he is inevitable. Darkseid is. I'm just saying, even as is, mutant power levels only apply to people playing within the conventional bounds of the universe. Achieving what would be basically perfect attunement with the universe and total control over everything? Yeah, that's not Omega Level anymore chief, that's Godhood.
@@Forestxavier20 All of that is fine, I guess. But completely irrelevant and missing the point. This is about terminology. Omega Level being a byword for Godhood is an expression used (and still in use) constantly in use in all X-Books for decades. Arguably the second most popular Marvel line to Spider-Man. The incorrect use of it in the Alpha storyline is the equivalent to flipping the names of Hydra and Nazis. The only way that would be overlooked in this instance would be if it was wilfully ignored. Bendis-style.
@@pious83 And again, you are opting to ignore that the real world writers take precedent and get to determine what terminology means in universe. The entire basis of comics is based on changing things that past writers did. It would be a massive change to add in "Alpha" level mutants as someone so powerful that they are literally gods, but the writers could do that if they so choose. Shit doesn't matter, the Marvel Staff get to determine what is official in universe terminology, so if that change were to ever come, it's not like what currently is in use would matter.
9:50 When it comes to canon, Marvel's traditional approach is that everything is canon. Until it is contradicted. For example, Cain Marko still found the Gem of Cyttorak in a temple in the Korean jungle. While serving with Charles Xavier in the Korean War. This is still canon, because no story since says he didn't. Which doesn't affect the age/timeline of Juggernaut. But Xavier is still supposed to be in his 40's...

My favourite absurd, "because comics" spider-man storyline (storyweb?) was that human lady with blood that activated and controlled existing ant DNA in humans kissed Peter, and that kiss made him turn into a literal giant spider. Once he was fully transformed she kidnapped him so he would be her spider king. But spider king is a pretty weird gig I guess because then Peter the literal giant spider man became Peter the literal giant spider woman, and was now also pregnant. Now, given the Spider and bug theme of the whole arc and the importance of queens and drones and stuff, you would assume that female-literal-giant-spider Peter parker would have given birth to a bunch of tiny spiders or some sort of spider/ant/human hybrids. But no, the spider version of Peter Parker died giving birth to.... A new and improved version of Peter Parker, who had all the same memories and experiences, but now had extra spider themed powers and bigger muscles. Oh, and I couldn't figure out how to fit this other information but the woman who kicked the whole thing off was like that because she was experimented on in WWII to become an ant soldier (and then just like, forgotten about and she never aged I guess?) And, according to this arc, it is a whopping 1/3 of the population that has residual ant DNA which allowed her to control them mentally, and also means that Peter would have been under her control regardless and that had literally nothing to do with him being Spider-man, but him being Spider-man is why she wanted him to be her king. ...because comics.
