Remember to drink responsibly(ish) and not be that guy... - Хобби
Best trick I have for chilling beers fast is to wrap a wet paper towel around a can or bottle and pop it in the freezer for 15 -20 minutes.
Same here, not -quite- as fast but basically free.
@@blackmetalden you have to account for the occasional exploded bottle though
@@MaltAndPepper it won’t explode if you take it out within 20 mins, so set a timer
@@blackmetalden yeah, I know what I'm supposed to do... And yet...
I thought this trick was a Korean thing. Pleasantly surprised to see ppl actually employ this trick lol
Here in Russia, we just leave our beers outside for 1 minute & we get the same result!
Hahaha! One small benefit of such extremes.
Stop the war mate!
A great solution if you only like drinking cold beer in the winter!
@@TwisterDethNemesis He's not the one making war. The Russian men want nothing to do with it.
Never rinse the can after the bath hack! Salty boi is the new crispy boi.
Love seeing Brad in the spotlight. Keep it up gents!
Want to give Brad's hack a go? All you need is a cooler (or bucket), 1kg of ice, 4 litres of water and 250g of salt. And fingers as hard as nails. Is it worth it? Or would you just buy the Cooper Cooler?
Is there also an option that doesn't need ice? The kind of people that forgets to chill their beer (me) also probably would forget to have ice ready (me, again).
A normal cooler with a sous vide pump attached to the side has worked for me in the past, the water movement seems to speed up the cooling, with a final rinse under a tap to make sure you don't get a mouthful of salt when you open it.
I'd love to see how long it takes to get to 10°C in an ice bath without salt.
If it was dirt cheap it would make for an interesting party gadget, but I find a cooler of ice is all you need to rapidly chill your beer. Salt might speed the process up a little, but it's definitely not necessary.
Surely a pair of cooking tongs to twizzle the can around? Will save on frostbite?
A ride on the positivity train with Brad. Just what I needed. I always use the good old 'wet paper around the bottle' trick. Maybe you could review those 'bottle re-sealers' next? Forgot the name. Keep it up!
Seems lots of people know that trick but it was new to us! We have a bottle opener episode in the works so the re-sealers will be on that.
Loving the Low Brau videos, please keep them coming!
The salt bath looks like a great hack if you can't get the cooler.
My alternative hack is to wet a kitchen towel, wrap it around the beer and then put it in the freezer. Cool beer usually in around 5-10 minutes, but doesn't hit the same efficiency as those hacks in the video!
It's a great tip for someone without ice though!
Thanks for that Brad, you took me back to our old house parties where I would shock people with this "trick". Next time, use a ladle or a wooden spoon for mixing. The biggest upside for the ice bath method is that you can chill multiple beers at once in minutes.
A spoon? We're gonna build a drill system!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Now THAT'S taking it to the NEXT LEVEL!
Yes. This format is an excellent addition to the channel. Please, more 🍻
Super dramatic. Loved it! Looking forward to what's next.
Brilliant. I WANT!!!!
Good work Brad, loving the new content
Glad you enjoyed it!
As someone from the states, I've never even heard of one of these beer chillers.
I like the sea salt ice bath. It’s great.
If you put the beer in the salt ice bath with the lids out of the water and let it sit you’ll be good to go
Just stick your hands in the ice for 3 minutes and, heypresto! You'll be hypothermic and won't need the beer. You'll save a fortune to-boot!
Hi Guys.
Was listening to the latest Friday 5pm podcast, and when Brad was pondering how to 3D print a beer can/power drill adapter I had a thought regarding a super cheap/easy way to accomplish this. All you need is a nut, bolt, drill, drill bit, and the can-top type holder (not sure what the actual name for this type of 4/6 pack holder).
Cut out one section of the holder, drill a hole in the centre, put the bolt through and secure it with the nut, put the end of the bolt in the drill, put the can in the holder, and spin away without risk of frostbite!
I tried it over the weekend, and took a few pics and a vid of my experiment. I'll send them to you in an e-mail.
Cheers.
KYLE YOU LEGEND! Looking forward to that email.
Brad is correct on the fact that you can get this type of gadget easier in the states here. I've seen similar gadgets and they all work about the same, spinning the can or bottle and immersing it in ice and water
Would love to see some videos about more beer brewing gadgets like the Tilt hydrometer.
We'll be slipping those into our homebrew exploits for sure.
Wait...wait! Put the salty water in the expensive contraption. You might end up traveling backwards through time!
If you can manage to get a small aquarium pump, putting that into the ice batch will absolutely speed up the cooling. It'll increase convection and draw out the heat quicker.
Hey Brad, good reviews. Even if I drink no beer anymore for at least six months, this is something to keep in mind for future parties with friends to cool the beer. I know it seems maybe stupid, but what are the best non-alcoholic beers for you?
Another great video, Brad! I own one of these Cooper Coolers, and they're great for what they do. There are a lot of other settings and FAQ questions on the CC website that Brad didn't have time to get into, so I'd highly recommend checking it out if you're interested.
Thanks for the info!
It'd be really nice if bottleshops kept their beer cold in the first place. Too many don't.
I just wrap cans in wet kitchen roll and bung in the freezer for 20 minutes.. Works a treat :)
We're always pushing for all beer to be temp controlled. Hopefully one day.
Would the Cooper also do something for the hop sediment that seems to settle on the bottom of cans with all the spinning?
I'm not too sure. The spinning should keep most of it at the bottom.
We have a machine here in the States (Im sure it's elsewhere) mostly in wine shops not really beer stores that chills bottles as well. It looks like a barrel filled with water and has a blueish liner like a swimming pool. You drop cans or bottles in the water and as items bob up and down water starts to churn around it. A tad later, ice cold bottle or can. I dont know what it's called but it does work well and it can do several at a time.
Wow never seen that. How long do you reckon?
I think I'll go for my can/beer bottle sizes cooler packs by Vacuvin - granted, they take 5-10 minutes but take less space (and money)...
Regularly turning does accelerate that a lot, so I can see the spinning idea.
While not as fast as the '1950 designed Super Future Magic Beer Cooling Space Bus', the wet towel wrapped around beer in the freezer trick works pretty freaking well.
But how cold was the actual beer? I think you have to pour it in a glass and measure the temp of the beer when poured or else you're really only measuring the temperature of the outside of the can. There are plenty of time when I've put my beer in the freezer for 20 minutes, pull out a cold can, but my beer is still barely cool.
Very true - which is why Jonny asked about the actual temp of the beer when he came on screen. Brad says it was crispy and cold!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Damn, I must be deaf because I totally missed that :D
I like bottle shops that have the industrial version
There's an industrial version!?
I went to a bar who had a Cooper Cooler. I used it to cool down an impy stout can (don't hate me) went to pour it and the beer and it was all foam (the beer was poured correctly) did you have the same issue?
I'm assuming this wouldn't be appropriate for lambic/beers with lots of sediment...
We didn't! In theory spinning shouldn't shake the beer up so I suspect that was some refermentation in the can, or it had been shaken beforehand.
Thanks, almost spit my beer out😂
4:26 *S P E E N*
Damn this is actually super tempting, but I'm already dreading the amount of space it'll take in the kitchen. Is there any issue with it shaking the beer too much in the water bath? Especially with can/bottle-conditioned beers?
For sure there will be. For anything with a lot of sediment it's likely best to just rest it vertically in the bath. Might take longer, but not a LOT longer.
Hi guys, great video. Have you looked into a technology 'hack' for beer clean glasses at home, without the need for industrial cleaners/three sinks?
Well this is an excellent idea! I hate damned dirty glassware killing the head on my beer. Thanks will get researching!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Thanks! I've lost many hours down the rabbit hole with my own research, over lockdown. The best I've found so far is keeping a dedicated sponge, then soaking/scrubbing the glassware with VWP, as it is easily sourced and acts as both a cleaner and a sanitiser. Afterwards, a good rinse with cold water and left to air dry on a drying rack. Curious to know if there are any other/better methods out there.
Low Brau is like Tomorrows World for beer! And while we're on the subject of said gadgets how about this one to test: We've all been there with a big bottle of beer, you need to stick it back into the fridge to keep it cold because you're not going to neck it in one go. Therefore what gadget is best to keep the carbonation in the bottle after it's been opened, or... is a stopper or cover even needed!?!?!? Over to you beer boffins to find out if a) you even need to stopper/cover your large format beers in the fridge and b) if stoppering is needed, what are the best products to do it with?
This is the best compliment we have ever received.
Did you try just leaving the cans in the salted ice bucket for three minutes without spinning them? I am thinking that if you could have some way that the top of the can/bottle stayed out of the salty water then you could potentially avoid that the lingering saltiness?
Brad's experimentations will continue!
I’d imagine that the Copper Cooler wouldn’t be a great tool for a beer with a lot of sediment in it, right? Say, for example, homebrews which usually have a decent layer on the bottom of the bottle, all that spinning would just get all that mixed in, right ?
I believe the spinning wouldn't be such an issue but lying it on its side certainly would be.
Would be good to see how long the cooper takes to get to a 6/7 degree temp?
We will investigate thojgh we think our thermometer was over reading.
Great video but two points, you could shake the whole cooler box and not dip your hands in! 2ndly you could do several beer in the cooler box at the same time!
Could def do multiple beers but we didnt want to affect our HIGHLY scientific experiment. I dont think shaking would work however - it would be less efficient and shake up the beer!
$90 from Amazon in the states...great vid! Go for the GOSE! What if you just dropped 6 cans in and covered them in salty water - no agitation?
Brad is gonna look into it
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Thinking about it some more - there are some CHEAP submersible pumps out there - it doesn't need to loft the liquid - just agitate it. There is also a particular pump used in glycol chillers to agitate the glycol and prevent solidification...another possibility! Either should be much cheaper than this gadget. Cheers!
Love how it didn’t cross Brad’s mind to rinse his salty boy under the tap after fishing it out of the brine 😂
The dud was thirsty! And even thirstier after that salty sip...
If you cool 3 beers in the coolerbox at the same time - then you are making profit!
Holy shit this is true. But you need a third arm to spin!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Don't be afraid to get your beard wet - use your face and both arms. No excuses.
I’d love to know the speed of the water bath without any of the spinning?
Good question. We'll look into it but I don't expect it to be a lot longer. Maybe 4 mins?
The problem is that it only cools one drink at a time. If you are doing a bottle swap it is going to take 5 minutes for 5 beers. You might as well just use an ice bath at that point.
Niche family guy reference there boys with “con-den-sation” 😂
Just rewatched this. The guy is even CALLED Jonny.
Great video! I'd just suggest taping your beer to a power drill and you're good to go....
Good tip!
Here's an additional hack: A lot of 6-pack beer holders are now made of hard plastic (probably easier to recycle and animals don't get trapped in them). What about cutting one single can section from one of those and attaching it to a drill? That would allow you to spin the can in the ice bath and save your hands from the cold.
JON. This is an excellent idea! Bit of superglue and we're there.
@@TheCraftBeerChannel I went with a short nut and bolt I had from some skateboard hardware. Not so sure superglue would stand up to the incredible torque of a Swedish cordless drill..... now all I need is some ice and a warm beer
Loved this! How about testing some of those beer foamer contraptions next?
100%! That's in the schedule!
Before I got a wort chiller I used to use ice, water and salt too to cool the wort down. Get yourself some gloves or a ladle and you’ll save your hands.
Maybe add a cheapo recirculating pump to your salty bath, faster and no need for hands.
Looks like a toaster.
Brad content 👌
I just make sure to also buy beer that can be drank at a warmer temperature while the cooler beers are cooling :') Although 25 degrees would be pushing it, I have to admit.
Haha yeah we took a worst case scenario there!
Didn’t Myth Busters chill beer in seconds with a C02 fire extinguisher. May not be the most practical but way more epic!
Haha that is pretty ingenious but yes...not the most practical. A bonus if you ever have a house fire at the same time though.
Love to see how the Cooper Cooler does with saltwater bath?
So the instructions say don't add salt... I guess it could corrode the internals? But we might try it anyway!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel :). In the name of beer science!
Those non contact thermometers average a temperature over an area. The laser pointer is misleading. The closer you can get to the thing you're measuring, the more of that thing will account for the temperature average shown. Also, if you want to be super accurate then put a piece of tape on the thing because the emissivity of the thing affects the reading, and plastic is the right emissivity for the thing to show the accurate temperature, compared to metal or glass surfaces.
NOTED, thanks!
Damn that freezer looks like it needs some attention
First, rinse the can off under the tap for half a tic, that'll get rid of the salty beer syndrome.
Improvements: cheep submersible garden pond pump. On Amazon, you can get a 100L/h pump for under $5 US. use that to get the water moving around the can(s), and get a 5 gal/20 Liter bucket. mix the salt with the water before you add it to the ice so it dissolves easier and you don't have salt crystals ripping up your pump. You need enough water filling the bucket that the ice isn't hitting the pump, but enough ice to keep the water bath temperatures sub-zero.
The round bucket will keep the water moving quicker than the square six-pack cooler, and convection is the key to getting your beer colder quicker. It's not magic, it's science.
Another really good thing is that your saltwater solution is re-usable, if you have enough salt in the solution. If it's salty enough, nothing can survive in it. Salt is a preservative and has been used for millennia for just that purpose. (the shelf stable thing, not the cold beer thing...) If you have enough space in your freezer to store the bucket, you'll never need to add more Ice, and you'll actually get a faster result. You just have to have enough salt in solution to keep the water from freezing in your freezer.
All amazing points, thanks! We'll update our approach and maybe do ep 2.
Open and newly chilled and spun beer and it jets everywhere I geuss ! Or just put them in the fridge
Spinning won't cause the beer to jet everywhere. It doesn't break up the air pocket.
a brits idea of an ice cold beer though is room temperature you know
But what if you add salt to the ice in the cooper cooler? 🤔
You open a time vortex.
Put salt in the Cooper as well!
The instructions say not to. But we don't play by the rules.
Salted wet paper towel in the freezer?!
And a vodka soda (with ice) to tie you over for 10 min whilst you wait? 😉
Man you know how to have a good time
@@TheCraftBeerChannel ain't no laws when you're drinking Claws
Rinse the can off or #GoseBoy ;)
Yeah needs a salt bath and a plain bath. Or just add some coriander and go all in on gose.
I realy want to see this device doing that with our Belgian high carbonated beer bottles.. the amount of pressure this will create spinning the beer at this speed 🤔 ... I think i rather call this device The Cooper Bottle Bomb Cooler 🤣
I believe it wouldn't make a difference - spinning is a very different motion and wont create the same turbulence as shaking. IF it's bottle conditioned however, it's gonna pour real hazy
Great video. 10 degrees isn't cold enough for a summer pilsner so it's a 👎 from me, oh and the cost certainly isn't worth it
To be fair I think our thermometer wasn't accurate. It was exceptionally cold beer, so the temp was just relative.
So much slow mo 😂. Love the gadget but can we get some better fridge beers for Brad please #fuckabinbev
Low brau is awesome. Can you put Low Brau in the title so I don’t miss an episode?
It is always in the thumbnail!
It looks like another contraption that will end up at a garage sale in several years because there is no room in the cupboard to store it.
Haha we have so many of those. Goddamn bread maker.
Yes brad, big brain stuff here, love it. Keep fancy pants Jonnie locked in the basement and keep it low brau 👍
So long as I have an ice bath down there I'll be happy.
Not good for craft that has sediment at the bottom of the can though 😖
Indeed, though our hack can be done with them upright!
Just put it in the freezer!
We did! We timed it! It took 25 minutes. Aint nobody got time for that.
Not good when you get sidetracked and the beer freezes though! 😱
you like to drink your beer at 10? still a bit too warm for me, mate. this is not something I would use for home-brews or bottle-conditioned craft beers, unless its a hefewizen (or maybe you really enjoy drinking yeast)(not to mention the effect on carbonization, or maybe im too much of a beer snob, eh?)...... You might consider using an underwater pump to circulate the water in your tub for a more automated effect. they can be had for less than10£ on amazon. With a circulation feature, you may find the efficiency to be better and the salt to be unnecessary.... save it for making iced cream. If you had a party and that many salted beers going round, i can imagine how long it would take to clean up all the salty fingerprints from round the house. I think a circulating water bath would be superior to the single use gadget most any day.
10c is warm beer. Just saying
It ain't warm, it is real ale temp, which is still cold. But it ain't crisp, which is why Jonny queried. We believe the can material meant the reading wasnt perfect
Hahahaha no way! These days there’s a load of yeast as crafts not getting filtered or it’s can conditioned. That sucker will have it all back into suspension 🤣🤣🤣🤢💩
Very few beers are can conditioned so mostly wont be an issue. With bottles you are 100% right though!
