Picked up 8 tigers today for my 55 gallon community. Literally no problems yet. They seem to really enjoy it. Probably gonna get 7 more to increase the school to 15
Little known fact: the aquarium tiger barb is a hybrid of several Puntigrus species & thus, neither the true P. tetrazona or P. anchisporus, as most books would have us believing. The reason why the beloved aquarium tiger barb is a genetic mess is due to it's popularity since way back in the day before taxonomists erected the genus Puntigrus spp. Where they have been mass produced by the millions. Today, there are a total of 5 recognised species in the genus. None of which match the morphology of the aquarium tiger barb. Which becomes extremely important to not release aquarium tiger barbs into habitats where true Puntigrus spp. occur in the wild. This is to avoid muddying the species complex via mutt genes.
