Not only when used "as it's supposed to"!
H&K says that the material is PA66. Everyone who is smart enough to ggogle the needed temperature to melt this material (depends on the exact polymer blend) could know that it is probably at around 300-350 degrees celsius. Much hotter than any shooter will grip very tight.
But the interesting fact is that absoluely NO ONE could ever precise explain which exact innaccuracy was noticed on which exact distance and under which exact circumstances. NEVER.
Some say that it shall be at distances of 500+ meters.... but if THIS is true:
What about the ammo and their second transsonic pass? I doubt that a projectile is still very accurate behind it's 2nd transsonic pass

Some further insights from a german officer:
HK delivered exactly what the Bundeswehr ordered as per specification. The weapon was build for precise single or burst fire. German infantry is using the MG3, MG4 and MG5 for automatic fire. Basically the overheating issue is a non-issue, because the weapon was just not made for this type of shooting. By the way: Most weapons will overheat after 500+shots of automatic fire.
Politically former defense minister Ursula von der Leyen used the scandal in order to start the process of finding a successor rifle. Not more not less. Personally I think the G36 is a very good and precise weapon, especially the optics are pretty good for a standard rifle. Most soldiers think so by the way. The successor MK556 is already off the table again, due to patent fraud allegations. The whole process had to start over again, giving HK another chance to supply the next standard rifle of the Bundeswehr.

well i think there are Points for valid criticism concerning performance under heat, but for one they do not exceed the problems other rifles have in same conditions by much, and also this was a tradeoff willingly taken by the government at the time, as they requested a lightweight rifle. There is no Eierlegende Wollmilchsau and the rifle does exactly what the Bundeswehr requested and paid for. But i can see how a minister can be talked into thinking the rifle is shit if that minister is no weapon expert and the other person knows how to present the weapon. Also H&K are not the most 'diplomatic' guys in external communications.

During my time as a conscript in 1999 our Battalion switched from G3 to G36. I preferred the G3 inspite of weight, impractical size, unsuitability for certain tasks by a million times. The reason: the G3 was super forgiving against any conscript abuse. I saw G3 thrown over obstacles of the obstacle course digging the barrel in like a spear. Drill sergeant mad: hell yeah. Extra rounds of running, push-ups for the whole platoon: yes. Change of zero point: nope. Although, the larger round inspires confidence. The G3 rounds went through small trees and sand bags...
Now for how I experienced the G36: Light, practical, great for running, easier to shoot. But flimsy. Not good for conscript abuse. And the zero point going off after simple mistakes like leaning the weapon against a wall and the G36 falling over. To hell with it's practically, the cooler look, lighter clear mags, and more ammo I can carry... but, then, maybe a lot of this was my bias adopting something new.

      @mariuslorson751 3 года назад +19

@@damianm-nordhorn116 To go into the background of why this is political: the German ministry of defense is pretty much a political dead end. If you get that job you are more or less expected to drop all your ambitions for becoming chancellor. It is used to dump people you have to take into your government but you don't like them. Such was the case with one Theodor zu Guttenberg. A young promising politician from the CSU, the small sister to Merkel's CDU. He was becoming popular so Merkel had the opposition (who didn't like the guy) dig up dirt on him. Turns out he cheated when he wrote his doctoral thesis. So Merkel kicked him out and gave the Defense department to Thomas de Maizière. Problem was: the guy was incompetent. So when Merkel formed a new government she needed another pick. Ursula von der Leyen (now headhoncho of the European Parliament) sprang to mind. The woman harbored ambitions of becoming Merkel's successor and was (at the time) reasonably popular. So she got the job. But von der Leyen did not want to be stuck in the defense department and then to shoved off into obscurity. So she drummed up a scandal, to make a name for herself with the electorate. That was the G36 scandal.
The reason she could do that so easily was another one: the people at the procurement service for the Bundeswehr have been there for ages and are known to be corrupt. So if a new rifle were to be adopted - they would be ingratiating themselves with the arms manufacturers, who later on would give them cushy jobs. Hence they supported von der Leyen in her endeavor.
A third factor came in the form of HK's reputation - they had just been slapped with a massive fine for illegally having sold G36 rifles to Mexico. Thus they were not exactly liked by the German urban voter.
So von der Leyen thought it a move that Merkel would approve of and started railing against HK (for which she was taken to court btw.). Problem was: that whole story was based off faulty data. Von der Leyen also didn't know what she was doing and thus she crashed and burned. She has the nickname "Flinten Ushi" now which roughly translates as "Shitty rifle Urusula". This was a scandal wholly of political making.

The stated drop in precision is hard to achieve in battle. But it's also a fact that the G36s life cycle in the German Army reached it's end. The guns were bought in the late 90s and begun to wear out. While it's a great gun, it's not up to date when it comes to modularity. But buying new guns is expensive and such big investments in arms is a bit hard to sell to the german public. So you create such a scandal to gain support from your voters to equip your troops with new weapons.

From my research, its a myth. Both the inaccuracy and the melting plastic, a myth. The melting plastic required far more rounds than a soldier's typical loadout be dumped through the gun full auto, an unlikely scenario. Granted the MG36 might potentially have something like that but its not really something to be worried about. Similar behaviour is seen in other guns with plastic furnature, the AK100 series getting far hotter in areas closer to plastic, and still requiring something in the order of 800 rounds full auto ammo dumped to melt the plastic off the top of my head. The inaccuracy is completely on par with similar rifles of its age.
I recall mention of conflicting interests with the people who brought the criticisms out, but I don't remember the specifics so I'm taking that with a grain of salt. Either way through extreme testing neither problem has been found so whatever the reason for the criticism its not really something to worry about. I would take the G36 into battle no questions asked. I might have some questions about the MG36 though.

@@Epic-pf8od Yes and no. Its true the conditions of the Middle East are vastly different and expose a number of huge problems otherwise unforseen. The SA80 being designed for the woods of Europe of the Cold War and performing terribly in the Middle East being a great example. But in this case the problem is exclusively heat to the plastic of the receiver, something which is very easily tested. And whilst they would have less heat due to the reduced outside temperatures, the hot desert would only increase the multiple-hundred degree plastic temperature by 10-30 degrees which isn't particularly significant. On top of that the testing will use far more rounds fired far faster than ever done in the Middle East due to the limitations of having tens of magazines ready loaded within hand's reach not really being viable in combat. Even moreso after the problem was revealed and tested for, and yet neither times found a realistic heat issue.
After all, the same test is done in snowy Russia for the AK official channel fired until the plastic sets alight and eventually melts off the gun, so location and conditions aren't really a problem for this specific test. Very much so a problem for most guns, however.

Germany also gave 8.000 of its own G36 assault rifles (together with a whole bunch of other weapons) to Iraqi Peshmerga fighters to use them against ISIS.

But honestly, they would have been better off reforging the receivers in aluminum or an alloy, and just putting the existing barrels and gas systems back in to save costs. Sigh. For the n-teen time, only army ever reporting problems with the G-36 was the Bundeswehr. The weapon is the standard issue rifle in many militaries that never had a problem and are in love with it. Some of them did use it in desert conditions in very heated up fights (spanish forces in Iraq) and they swear by their rifle. And in fact the spanish army conducted a series of quite rigorous tests after the German combat reports from Afghanistan showed up and they found out nothing wrong with the weapon, it would handle sustained fire as well as any other modern standard issue assault rifle.
So, the whole story is bollocks and all points out at political motivated chaff in order to get a rifle from someone than H&K (a company the german government has never had very good relations with) issued to the Bundeswehr.

    • @mangalores-x_x
      @mangalores-x_x 3 года назад +21

it is not even the entirety of the Bundeswehr that had a problem with it. Overall it was a political fight. Currently making someone defense minister in germany is the easiest way to ruin their political careers and take them out as rivals so this was more something of that and then defense minister v.d. Leyen may not be good at her job, but is good at political scheming and deflected the whole affair on HK to save her own skin. Overall the Bundeswehr also kind of rethink their stance on military procurement because they have major problems with reliability in delivery and supply by the producers so I also got the feeling they wanted to nail HK against a wall to make an example. If even HK can get into hot water with the German military, who cannot?
In the end it will be a HK416 now after a short scare for HK that Haenel managed to squeeze in with a cheaper offer of a similar replica (but got shot down due to patent issues when HK challenged that).
Overall it makes sense. The G36 is not bad, but one essential aspect of it is its hand rail on top which was ok in 1990 when those integrated optics were a great idea, but nowadays with individualized optics you constantly have to work around that awkwardness. In the end there is not much difference in all the different 5.56 derivates. They are assault rifles, that shoot a NATO standard round and are just different configurations of the same tech.

I was in the german military from 2001 we where some of the first regular infantrie troops equiped with the G36. In comparison to the old G3 it was a very good weapon on the shooting range. The optics where supreme with dot sight and the longerange scope very easy to swap between the two. High accuracy nearly no kick back in comparison to G3. of course its a smaller caliber but also the gas loading mechanism took alot away as well. So you can shoot it in full auto salves and staying easy in target. The 30 Rounds seetrough magazines and the "cliptogether" option where cool.(G3 only had 20 Round mags) and it was lighter.. BUT that was all under the controlled "labratory" conditions of a shooting range... In the field there where some clear problems, one I never heard anyone adressing elsewhere. In foggy wet weather the sights got foggy from the inside so you can't see through... and because there where no iron sights on the rifle you where up for some trouble. I never shot it with the 200 round snailmag under Afgahni heat conditions. But we shot some 30 Roundmags in full auto in summer heat (30 °C) with no problems. Its like that with all Equippment you have to stress test it under every possible circumstances and then adress the problems correctly and talk to the contractor to update his merch.. I think the biggest problem is that the military has a very bad standing in germanys everyday politics. So the politicians send them on all kinds of missions but dont want to equip our guys accordingly.. its a disgrace.

    • @535phobos

Yeah, the fogging usca thing I noticed at well. In boot camp my shooting day was raining, and I was the only one who passed first try because I wrapped a napkin around the optics. Not really viable in the field.
On the other hand I also never had a jam with live ammo (with blanks all the time... damn MPG...), and hit even with a defect red point.

Soldiers would have been putting down way more than 60 rounds through the rifle at a time over the various range shoots over the 15 or so years, at sometimes lower rates than an urgent firefight sometimes sure, but I'd bet sometimes at higher rates. In 15 years no problem was identified? And it takes a single firefight for them to throw the rifle away?
Then why wasn't the the alleged flaw reproduced without fail upon subsequent testing?
Add to that, you'd notice even the slightest loss of zero or accuracy during at least one of the tens of thousands of G36 range shoots in its service history.
Considering the facts as presented, the controversy stinks to high heaven.
My cynical brain tells me that some higher ranking members in the German military had certain shares in certain companies.

Same shit in the Australian Army - Land 125 program was a fucking joke, no way in hell that anyone who tested that equipment actually declared it suitable for our soldiers in good faith. The tax payer footed the bill as every Infantry soldier purchased their own webbing as the issued equipment was substandard to a huge degree, and wrote off the cost of buying their own equipment come tax time, as they should.

from what my father told me, at the range the german Soldiers get handed an spezified amount of ammo (i think 6 Rounds) wich is counted form the one handing it out and the one recieving them and put down range. So during training there isn´t a lot of overheating.

  • @comsubpac

Your introduction to the rifle is faulty at best. The G36 was developed as a cheap, light rifle for an conscript army operating in central europe. It was developed after the G11 was canceled due to budget restraints.
Your story about the overheating isn't right either. A news story claimed that the rifles were overheating. Something the soldiers never said and that was later even confirmed in court. The Chief of Staff of the Bundeswehr investigated further and couldn't find a single incident where overheating was a problem. The rumor about overheating G36s had started years prior when a training manual warned from using the same rifle for all soldiers during full auto training. Putting hundreds of rounds through the same rifle within minutes damages the barres - a part that is made from steel and not from polymer - but in combat no soldier will ever carry enough ammunition to get that problem. The G36 isn't a machine gun anyway and every other assault rifle has similar problems.
Later it was tested against a HK416 equipped with a heavier barrel. Yes, the G36 proved to be less accurate but still well within the specifications. Even a heated G36 will still hit the target well enough. Your 20 inches are completely wrong. The G36 was upgraded several times.
The G36 wasn't "thrown in the garbage" either. Originally it was intended to have a service life of 20-25 years in a conscript army. It was introduced in 1997 and is approaching the end of its time anyway. Besides, the Bundeswehr had changed into a professional army operating all over the world in NATO missions and the requirements for a service rifle changed. Still the G36 isn't going to disappear for decades the same way the G3 is still around.
Your "put into the corner" comment is utterly wrong. Germany had participated in NATO missions long before Afghanistan and was even involved in combat.

Forgotten Weapons has a video about this, he explains it better.

  • @BambiTrout
    @BambiTrout 3 года назад +11

I have to say that I don't see why they insisted on an entirely new rifle, when they could have saved millions by doing a proper investigation and simply updating the G36 to fix the issue, because by all accounts, it's a very good rifle other than this issue, and plenty of people dispute that this issue even happens - at least to the extent described.
The M16 suffered from a lot of reliability issues when launched, and the L86 was deemed practically unusable by most soldiers, but the US and UK governments took the time and spent the money to identify the issues and fix them, rather than throwing the baby out with the bath water. As a result, the M16 is one of the most beloved weapons in the world, and the L86 is now usable.
The G36 was in service with no major complaints for 14 years before the problem was identified, which suggests that a) it wasn't a huge problem under normal circumstances, and b) it fundamentally works well and just needed improvements to deal with these rare circumstances. A thicker barrel, or improved airflow around the barrel, or adding a few extra aluminium parts to reinforce key stress points probably would have fixed the issue easily and at a far lower cost.

The Bundeswehr needed a new weapon and the G36 met their specifications.
H&K suggested the 100-200 gramms heavier MG36 variant which got a heavier barrel and thus is more reliable.
The Bundeswehr declined the suggestion and took the G36 (which was a good choice back then since it was considered a weapon for defending germany).
The whole drama and misinformation was primarly created by the media (as always).
I shot the G36 myself. Excellent, easy to use, easy to maintain weapon. (Would rather have 7,62 for more stopping power but that's my only critique)
A black G36 that will be burned by the sun in afghanistan for 6 hours will be hot before shooting. Then shooting 60 rounds in quick succession in such an environment is a really rare case. As a German, i like the G36. We are trained to treat it more as a Battlerifle rather than an automatic bullethose. It's super accurate, pretty light compared to other modern Rifles and looks nice too. The only thing i didnt like too much was the Dreifach-Zielfernrohr and its handle in Urban or Wooded areas, was a bit clunky and really not good for peripheral vision. Usualy went with the G36C and a reflexsight if we were allowed to, it handled burst just fine, i never really used full-auto both at the range and during practice scenarios with blanks. I was one of the last 18 year olds serving their mandatory year under the Wehrpflicht before it was abolished so the scandal was already known. Altough i only heard about it once they handed us a G36 during instructions and one of my fellow trainees groaned in disgust complaining about it. Our Instructor told him he had a good idea how he could "warm" up to it and ordered him to run two laps around the Armory with it.

You missed another major claim. Soldiers claimed that during training the guns were left lying on the ground in between range drills and that after this time in the sun they would be less accurate. Official testing was unable to replicate this claim but the story spread.
Karl of RUclips channel InRangeTV got himself a G36 clone and an original Hensoldt optic identical to what the German Army originally issued. His own range experiments were also unable to replicate an unacceptable loss in accuracy until he shot it at a competitive match. During the match he started seeing accuracy problems and another shooter while handling the rifle was able to flex the optic quite far out of place with just his hand. It seems the problem isn't where the polymer interacts with barrel but instead how the sight is mounted. Hence why you see many photos of G36s with steel top rails (instead of the original polymer) and aftermarket optics.

As someone with many friends in the german Bundeswehr, I can say that the soldiers loved the g36. And that they always tell the same story. The gun is awesome but the scope ruins the damn rifle. The scope actually can wable a fair bit and you loose zero. They say since some of them used the idz version the problems are mysteriously gone. The 3,5x scope is the problem. I myself have a hensoltd 1,5x g36c scope (basicly the carryhandlescope without the carryhandle and for pic-rails) and even there the scopepart can wable in the plastic where it lives. But yeah the g36 is a fine rifle inrange basicly made the same conclusion.

One of my tenants was a soldier in Afghanistan and had a lot of experience with the G36. He told me that he and his unit had never had any problems with the G36, the weapon was precise and above all extremely reliable. The talk about the supposedly decreasing precision of the G36 when hot-fired had, in his opinion, another reason: There is also a light MG version of the G36 with reinforced components and a thicker barrel (MG36). However, this light MG was not procured because the decision-makers saw too little difference to the G36. The troops in Afghanistan thus had only the MG 3 as their initial MG, an excellent weapon but heavy and bulky. As a result, the G36 assault rifle was often "abused" as a light machine gun, which did not correspond to the intended use of the G36 with its thinner barrel profile. Under this extreme load, the weapon naturally began to scatter more when hot-fired than when used as intended. But this would have been the case with any assault rifle and cannot be blamed on the G36.

At 7:10, it's an Italian Beretta assault rifle or some Scandanavian rifle (can't quite tell...), but it ain't a G36, buddy...pay attention to editing quality next time, instead of insulting New Jersey landfills...

I have talked to some soldiers who were in Afghanistan. If they had had the MG3 at their disposal, they would not have had to abuse the G36 as a machine gun. They were sent on a war mission without a machine gun.

  • @XH3llBoundX

At first i have to point out i never liked to shot the G36 in my active time of duty in the german army, so that no one can call me a "fanboy". I loved my UZI! :D But i have to correct some points. I knew the G36 very well and can compare it to other major assault rifle plattforms due to personel expiriences with many of them over the last two decades. The overheating problems of the G36 never resulted in melting plastic! Thats a total bullshit. The main issue was a lack of precision in hot climate zones by using the assult rifle G36 for extented supressive fire next to other problems like lack of modularity on users level (no picatinnys to change optics or add other equipment like flash etc., very high line of sights, fogging of optics). The G36 in the version was never ment to do the job of a MG an deliver suppressive fire for longer period. H&K pointed that out before the contract was signed. Further the G36 was designed for war scenario in the middle of Europe in a Cold War situation. So at that point nobody was aiming or thinking for german military action in hot climate zones like Afghanistan etc. But back to the beginning. The real problem lays back in the time when the german armed forces were loooking for a new rifle. I'll keep it simple. The Bundeswehr was looking for a new assault rifle for usage in a middle european battle environment, it should be light and very precice with easy one shot capability up to 500 meter. And HK developed and offered the G36. The Bundeswehr said to H&K as they first saw it: "Make it lighter, its to heavy" HK: "Ok we can put on a lighter barrel but than u can have precision problems after long time rapid fire and in hotter environments." Bundeswehr: "Nah, thats ok we just defend Germany and Nato in the center of europe and its just an assault rifle and no MG." "Hey, H&K can you make it that we can use it as a light MG?" and HK answered: "Of course, we'll put a heavier barrel on so there won't be any overheating issues, a drummag and a bipod so it can handle this job well." Bundeswehr: "Uhhhh, nice... but wouldn' it be bit to heavy?" HK: "Sure, but thats the price you have to pay when you whant a light MG." Politicians: "What? Did i hear the word price? How much will it cost to get all this rifles with MG capabilities? HK: "This XXXXXXXXXXXX!" Politicians: "No Bundeswehr thats to expensive" Bundeswehr:" Damn, but we want it :( ... can we just have the bipods and the drummags? And teach our soldiers not to use it as a real light MG?" Politicians: "OK, that would fit the budget if you only order the bipod and the drummag for an ammount of XXXX of the assault rifles." Bundeswehr: "Hmmmm shit... but better than nothing." That was the Story. Other Nations ordered the G36 with the heavier barrel as it was offered first to the Bundeswehr. The G36 itself is not a total garbage the peanutcounters in government and the change of the world made it an unlucky little rifle. I can tell it is in centeral european conditions one of the most reliable and user friendliest infantry rifles of the last few decades. If it had the heavier barrel to the begin, ther wont be any issues and it would easy compede with M4/M16 and any other plattform. In fact i saw uncountable malfunctions of M4/M16, we used to train a lot with US troops as well as GB, Poland, Austria, Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy the G36 was always a reliable rifle. So the displacement of the G36 is mainly forced by politicians, like the former minister of defence Ursula von der Leyen, backed by lobbyists. Never the less the G36 in its actual variant in the german army dosn't meet the requirements for a modern infantry rifle in worldwide operational scenarios in any climate zone.

I read that the german military version G36 also used cheaper plastic in their recievers. They (not so much the military itself but the bean counters) wanted the cheapest version of the rifle, that was possible and so pressured H&K into using the cheapest plastic possible.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haenel_MK_556
Actually, I think this whole thing is a mess and it's very unfortunate that by now most competitors (this time SIG Sauer, Rheinmetall/Steyer) are so pissed that is gonna be hard to find anyone competing for the next contract.
In fact it rather seems like all tenders so far were designed to favor HK.
..also is almost unimaginable that one can deliver a good rifle WITHOUT making a loss at price below 1500€.
