  • Are NBA Players REALLY Carrying The Basketball?
A lot of people aren't clear on the rules in basketball, mainly because they're going on what they were taught growing up, but very few people take the time to learn things like what is actually a carry according to the rule book.
Because of this, there's a lot of plays where people think NBA players are carrying the ball when they're not, but at the same time there ARE a lot of instances where NBA players do carry the ball.
In this video you'll learn how to tell the difference, so when you see NBA stars dribble a basketball you'll know if it's legal or not.

    From the official NBA rules-
Rule No. 10, Section II, d: A player who is dribbling may not put any part of his hand under the ball and (1) carry it from one point to another or (2) bring it to a pause and then continue to dribble again.
Not a single part of you hand, not the tip of your pinky may go below the equator in order to manipulate the natural bounce of the ball under the current rules. In conclusion, I see every NBA player doing this.

    • @lazerdicks
      @lazerdicks Год назад +2

Where are you getting it can't go "below the equator " of the ball? The rule states only, "no part of the hand can go under the ball" however the rules do not define what under the ball means. This leads to interpretation. Under the ball could be below the equator of the ball, but it could also mean below the lower 20-30% of the ball, or really anything. The vague terminology pretty much makes the ruling solely based on the officiating standards of the time. And to be fair, players have been putting their hand on the side of the ball ,like Lebron is in the thumbnail, without it being called a carry since the 1960's.

My problem is that already the defense is at a disadvantage with the foul calls on most of the even incidental contact on guards. Between this and the push off that many offensive players get away with defense is not really an aspect of the game. The way I understood it growing up in the 70s/80s is that if the ball at the top of the dribble moves laterally in any direction along the same plane without going down then it seemed to be called a carry…because you weren’t ‘dribbling’ but ‘carrying’ the ball along a path.

My opinion. Aquarius when your hand is under the ball gripping it. Your hand should be on top of the ball and make a score. You can grip the ball underhand twisted and start dribbling that's not basketball that's an illusion. But I understand the NBA wants to game to work faster and give people excited. Actually is carrying the ball because if you gripped up under it turn it around then start dribbling again that's caring about those millimeters a second is caring about without dribbling but everybody has their own rules.

YOU ALSO have to understand the way the game if OFFICIATED.
The players carry the most when it is 1 guy with NO DEFENSE within close enough to begin a closely Guarding Count (which they got rid of partially BUT the distance of the Defender DOES MATTER).
A BASIC CONCEPT of the Rules is Advantage/Disadvantage... if you watch Soccer a lot you probably understand this concept already. Basically, if no one gains an Advantage or no one is Disadvantaged by something that happens on the Court there is NO CALL to make.
    -
So this guy dribbling by himself is not using a carry to keep the ball away from the Defense. He is gaining No Advantage. But if the Defender is close enough to apply Defensive Pressure and he Carries the Ball the Dribble HAS AN ADVANTAGE is you do not call it. And the Defender has been put at a DISADVANTAGE to get a Steal or force a turnover.
Another place you might see this come into play is Block/Charge Situations. When there is a NO CALL odds are the players bumped but neither was knocked off Balance. The Offense did not lose the Ball. The Dribbler did not get around the Defender and the Defender did not keep the Dribbler from getting around him. And typically it has occurred far enough from the basket that it has not affected the game in anyway.
    -
But contact on the shot... even the lightest contact... someone has likely got an Advantage or has been Disadvantaged by that contact because it has likely affected the chance to Score.
Advantage/Disadvantage is just 1 of the Basic Concepts of the Rules. So it doesn't necessarily Apply to everything that happens on the Court.

You excuse the refs not calling carrying in basketball anymore because "the refs can't see every single thing every single time". at 4:19. The refs don't need to call the close ones. Just the blatant ones EVERY TIME across all games. NBA and College and High School. That will stop it. Enforce the rules. Simple.
C'mon man, this violation is rampant and ruining the game IMO. Its way way way way way to easy to roast a defender off the dribble when you can put your hand underneath the ball anytime you want without impunity. I just watched FDU vs SFU in 2nd round of the NCAA men's tourney. #2
Demetre Roberts, for FDU is an amazing player. SUPER quick, handles, but he carries worse than any player all game long. It made me not want them to win the cinderella dream. Get that GARBAGE OUT OF BASKETBALL!! Not shouting, just emphasis. It ruins the authenticity of the game. Period. Makes defending a really quick player nigh impossible, which will always give those who abuse this blatant NO-CALL a reason to be better than the rest. Breaking the rules, aka cheating, detracts from the game. The trend of REF's allowing it has to stop. Unless they want to change the rules and announce it across the board.
How do we coach our kids? Don't carry? Carry and be unstoppable. The game has devolved.

One has to go back to the origins of basketball and or at least played or watched pros back in the fifties and sixties . the standards then were very very strict as to palming and carrying . a player could not dribble the ball from the side under any circumstances , let alone come up underneath the ball , rotate your hand to the top and drive it into the floor . Almost every player today would be called for carrying forty years ago . in those days only a few skilled players were considered great ball handlers . today everyone is a good ball handlers because of the rules not being called by the ref or the league.
Your interpretation of palming and carrying is based on what is " allowed "not what the original rules stated . i suggest you find some videos of players in the sixties. you will quickly see the difference from todays lax rules .

Of course they carry/Palm the ball 90 percent of time. Your making up misinformation about the dribbling. They Palm the ball at least 90 percent of the time …. And they travel about 70 percent of the time. I don’t know what game your playing but the fact is they allow it now and they allow traveling also. The NBA and College game has become unwatchable at best.

It's in the rules book. You can't have any part of your hand under the ball and you can't pause the ball and carry to another point. Tim Hardaway had a very good cross over but he didn't carry like Allen Iverson.

Nope, but it is right on the line, and some of the "pocket dribbles" and some of the pullback dribbles he demonstrates in the video go even lower in terms of hand position on the ball.
From the perspective of the player, it's especially hard to tell. When you're reaching over the top of the ball, it's hard to see and hard to evaluate if your hand is dropping below the ball on the front side because you can't see from that side. I feel like if the creator took a close look at the video, he'd probably also say, "Yeah one or two of those may have been a little too low."
The main thing is there's no reason to call it in a game unless it specifically gives a player an unfair advantage.
If I see a player "break ankles" on a play, but he carried a little, if the carry isn't really what caused the juke to be effective, it's a silly call. If the entire effectiveness of the dribble attack is based on the carry, yes, absolutely call that.

"A player who is dribbling may not put any part of his hand under the ball and (1) carry it from one point to another or (2) bring it to a pause and then continue to dribble again."
Why not just change the rule? As I see it nearly every crossover is a carry. Just change the rule to express the actual intent of the rule. You can see the Tim Hardaway vs AI differences and know AI carries based on a clearly out of date rule
