Finally, after watching this video for many years, I had to pleasure to see him live in Glasgow this past weekend. It was GREAT, to say the least. His voice was so powerful, he was super nice with the public and even came down from the stage, and walked with the public while singing, he didn't miss a single tone, and he played pretty much every instrument. I would dare to say that he's one of the best and most talented artist alive. He is unbelievable.
If you like The Tallest Man on Earth, you should def check out our channel for more Tiny Desque (see what I did there)-style videos, but with other, Swedish artists! Next week we're releasing sessions with Vilma Flood, who's collaborated with TTMoE on her latest album. Promise you won't be disappointed 🫰
Best show of my life a few weeks back in San Diego. I’ve seen so many amazing bands live, I was not expecting to be blown away. What an honor to see him in person.
wow! this makes me be even more excited about the fact he's coming finally to my city (Barcelona) after listening to him like more than 10 years, I'm really looking forward to that show, thanks!
Many people disagree, I know but I do think that he's just as talented as Bob Dylan, the circumstances of his life and our world won't make him as famous or be considered a legend like Dylan is but that doesn't mean it's not true. Many talented people whom we have no idea of are as talented as the legends of the past were but we'll never know them because they didn't have the luck to be known.
***** i totally agree with u there.the state of music now is just so different from back then.people don't care about real music no more.they just want the mainstream bubble gum shit.
Holy sh*t. I've watched this video probably 10/12 times and I just deciphered what he says when the dude asks him about performing. He says that it's not like in every day life you get to scream at people - the happy scream. That is radical.
And "In everyday life, it's hard to look people in the eyes" so true. Hey I need to know, how the fuck does he get his guitar to sound so twangy? What do you think? See 00:21 and you'll know what I mean. It sounds like a shrapnel blizzard, anyone got any theories?
mikebiketrike I'' say something like thicker string gauge than usual, maybe a brand like elixir and relatively low action on the neck should get you in the ball park :-) the dynamic microphone he uses on the guitar is also responsible for that kind of "sharp" sound on the guitar sound. Try a SM-57 on the guitar !
mikebiketrike He strums very hard and has a capo on for most songs which lowers the strings further up the fret board. that makes the buzz and ads an additional "twang" from stumming so hard. he also plays OM or OO style gutiars whose small bodies lend to that sound as well. ALSO he tunes his guitar DADGBD for most songs (tuning up)
i saw Kristian perform for the first time after 2 years in August of 2021 due to the pandemic in Sweden, Dalarna, rättvik in Swedens most beautiful outdoors concert hall (Dalhalla, look it up) deep in to the forrest. My girlfriend burst into tears the second he took the stage and the rest of the evening was really magical, with the first time hearing Kristian sing in swedish. He opened the consert with a string picking rendition of the gardner and closed it with a cover of I will always love you if im not misstaken, which was a running theme during the evening, he expressed a lot of love to the audience many times, i think he realized he was on home turf when he mentioned a supermarket in his home town of Borlänge and people cheered, a trip i will look back to for the rest of my life as being perfect. All thanks to Kristian himself, one of Swedens best and most underappreciated artists of all time, he really doesnt get the recognition he deserves over here... that all for me, thanks T
What a lovely comment and review. I saw him a few weeks ago in San Diego and cried through most of his performance. Best of my life. What a privilege to see him in my own home town. I’d love to see him again. Thanks for sharing your experience. ✨
It's my dream to see him play at Dalhalla. I'm from Mora (Gesunda), just 40 km from Leksand where he grew up. I've seen him live a few times over the years but I've never been to a concert at Dalhalla. But some day I will!
Wow...this man's performance transfixes. He seems shifty, like he's ready to leave at any moment, always looking over his shoulder, yet never breaking his intense sincerity. Incredible stuff.
He is one of the best performers I've ever witnessed. He can carry the wieght of a band with just his guitar and voice when it come to stage presence. Its amazing to watch.
Saw this guy in concert just a week ago. Man, best money ever spent; guys if you haven't seen him live yet THEN DO. It's magic man, nothing short of it
This guy is immense. My new girlfriend only introduced me to his music this morning and i'm bloody loving it. The guitar picking is fabulous, it kinda reminds me of one of my other favourite bands Young Believers' guitar style so I'm in heaven.
Cody Behrens yeah i'm not the biggest fan of the sound that creates on the acoustic either, but sometimes has to be done to fit the vocal range. it doesn't make him any less of a guitarist as for as skill level goes though.
He's just mesmerising in small venues like this. Was lucky to see him at his first UK show in London with only 100 people or so. Felt some of the magic was lost the last time I saw him in a (substantially) bigger venue.
There are great singers, and there are great musicians, and there are great performers. But it is very rare that one person exceeds at all three. Kristian Matsson is an absolute gem in the world of music.
Beauty and love encompassed... He writes such worldly inspiring cinematic music... you just wince in the wrinkle of your smile, lulling with the beauty of the earth. And then there's the deep dark. Just the world... Ahhhh

I heard this song a long long time back... today I just felt like hearing it again after years... I am lucky that I could find it... hearing it again after 14 years is a bliss... I don't know you dude but I have wished the best for you always since the last 14 yrs.

I once took my wife to his concert and she hadn't listen much from him before. After the concert she told me it was the best concert she has ever been on :)
"is that in your family [Not really] or a performer that you fell in love with as a kid?" His music is so deep and yet all of his responses to questions are so one dimensional haha. Never gets old.
I almost wonder if he falls on the autism spectrum scale- like Aspergers. And I say this purely out of respect- not criticism. He has amazing talent- seems like all the "quirky" ones do :)
+Tiffany R +Tiffany R No, I don't think he does. He's just Swedish haha. Social interaction in Sweden is super limited, and also this was filmed not very far into his solo career. He was used to having a band behind him and jumping/climbing around when he was in The Montezumas. So his uncomfortableness, I guess you could say, comes from a combination of those two things. If you watch shows and interviews of him now, he's MUCH more comfortable and personable- he even cracks a few jokes here and there.
He's such an overall lovely person. I saw him live and god he really is a natural performer most of all the artists I've seen live are understandably nervous but he really thrives on if it's wonderful. Also he's mega hot.
Yeah he is like one of those people that would not look right doing anything else but playing music, I have also seen him live and although I was very drunk It was awesome!
Kevin Hudson that's exactly true. and also very rare. there are a lot of musicians who look like this just happens to be something they're doing, but this guy looks so fucking passionate and natural .
Went to the concert in San Diego a few days ago, such a good performer, I hate seated shows but this was one of my favorite concerts, and then I met him after, seriously I don't just say this...he is the nicest guy ever.
he plays with such emotion and still has so much grace in his fingers! can u imagine wat he's actually thinkin when he plays these songs. wat he feels. gives me goosebumps!!!! Can not wait to see him at the Newport Folk Festival and possibly the Philadelphia Folkfest I hope!
I admire his way playing guitar. It looks like the chords are just perfect. And the voice just make the song even better. Thank you for hanging out there! =)
My favorite part of this video is that during "The Gardener," he is having so much fun with the song. Being a musician myself, I love to see other artists who can show that they're having a good time performing their work.
Sometimes the sign of a new artist is they tend to rush their songs. Either from inexperience, anxiety, fear people don't want to listen to their songs, etc. He's really pumping up the pace on these songs and it's interesting when you compare him to now, 7 years later. Even he admitted he is a lot more confident and takes his time when playing, that he is a lot more mellow when it comes to performing. Still sounds good, but once he became a lot more experienced and comfortable his music really resonates with his audience even more
We all do it my man, even me, but when you become aware about a weakness is the moment we take control of it. I wish you the best of luck with your music!
I tend to disagree. This is maybe one of my favorite performances by anyone. Simply because it is so raw. Unadulterated. Yearning. Its beautiful in that regard.
fl4grant That's the beauty of music, its all different to others. For me though, he has able to sharply intertwine his levels, being able to slow down or quite a performance to almost a whisper while keeping his power and emotion. Or he can speed it up and attack with ferocity without ever being overbearing and off tune. I just saw him live a couple weeks ago, he is a master at controlling not only his instruments, or the instruments of the band, but the audience as an instrument. He walked out and put his finger to his mouth and had us be very quite for the first few songs. So we all tuned in with him, and then he lead us along the journey with him so there was no senseless noise like at some concerts, instead we were all tuned into the same frequency. I have never seen someone control an audience so well. So seeing him, after all this time, get better and better at mastering all aspects of music is breathtaking. And yet, after all this time, it still sounds fresh and still sounds raw. It's beautiful
Kristian Mattson was great to begin with, and he's just gotten better and better over the years... better singer, better player,, better performer. Each live show, better than the last. I don't know how he leaves it all on stage, every night.
Shortly before this vid came out we got tickets to see TMOE in Asheville, NC in a repurposed church turned venue. Folding chairs. Only about 40-50 people at each of the two shows if I remember right. He didn't even use a PA, just walked around playing his guitar and singing these songs. Will never forget it! Was inches away from him hearing essentially the same experience the NPR team got at this Tiny Desk. :)
I've seen this maybe 3 times and each time I thought "Well it's not bad." I have no idea what made me think that way. This is my 4th time watching this and i'm now realizing that this is amazing.
Let me preface this by saying I absolutely love both Dylan and TTMON. To everyone saying this guy is more talented than Bob Dylan; I get it. He is a much better guitar player, and does have a more naturally gifted voice. But the fact remains that this guy WOULD NOT EXIST without Bob Dylan. Bob pioneered this style of music, and he is the reason that acts such as Tallest Man on Earth exist. I would argue that Dylan is a better songwriter, but guitar playing and singing do not make him a better artist than Bob. The fact remains that Bob was more than likely this guy's main influence, his sound is shaped after Dylan, and Bob is the original great.
+David Allman the fact that he's Swedish, yet he sings with that fairly recognisable twang proves he's so clearly influenced by Dylan that all these people arguing is pretty redundant...
Beatles was a great milestone for modern music, yet none of the bands today sound like the beatles. This guy is nothing like dylan except a similarity here and there... music isnt even close imo...
Bob didn’t really pioneers folk music, he just made it popular. I’m not sure if ttmoe lists Dylan as an influence but there’s definitely others like Nick Drake that contributed more to his artistic inspiration. I think the Dylan comparison has more to do with the voice than the style of songwriting. I’d just plainly say TTMOE is one of the greatest songwriters and musicians of the last century rather than compare him to another. I enjoy his music more than Dylan but that’s just me.
I saw him in 2007 or 2008 (I can't remember) in a coffee shop in the tiny college town of Alfred, NY. There couldn't have been more than 100 people packed into the upstairs of that place. I had no idea who he was at the time and wasn't sure how I felt about his voice, but I felt the passion and pain in his music, and that I appreciated. Since then, I've listened to him more and more and have really grown to enjoy his music and his voice. Just a guy and his guitar made for a very intimate performance that I'm glad I got to see.
I clicked without expectation, but now i am grateful i did! Beatiful music. This so called tallest man, may not be the tallest, but he is a great artist indeed
I love this guy, what finger picking skills, great voice, what a talent...still the cameraman seems like he wants to catch his chin poop just like I do.... did I mention, that this is the greatest singer in the world? Makes my armhair stand up... LOVE the Gardener

Other than the fact that he's a great guitarist and has an interesting voice, I love how in every performance he gets so into it even though he's the only playing.
TheUltimateGC It's NPR, do you know what that stands for? No real need for Video wizards at NPR. However, it isn't terrible, it's artistic. Lighten up and enjoy the music.
newfoundlander1965 Calm thyself my dear random man who knows me not. 'Twas but a delicate comment for you see I am a very big fan of this Tall Man here and want only very much to be able to see him as he sings his sweet songs.
I watched this video the day it got published and kept watching it A LOT after that, but a couple of days ago I got to see him live and it's just incredible. And the coolest thing is that after the concert, he was just hanging around with everybody! I approached him shaking out of excitement and in the most humble way he said to me "Hi, I'm Kristian, pleased to meet you!" We talked for like around 5 minutes and I swear to God... I don't think I've ever met someone as humble and thankful for his fans as this lad. I will never forget that moment.

Use it as motivation instead
Can't hurt to try and learn his songs. I did it. In fact, doing so made me really good at playing the guitar. Figures.
Instead try and learn them. Use Gareth Evans on YT he’s done tutorials for a lot of his songs.
I understand compete grigsby
Listen to some Leo Kottke or Tommy Emmanuel and you will for sure.

he plays with such emotion and still has so much grace in his fingers! can u imagine wat he's actually thinkin when he plays these songs. wat he feels. gives me goosebumps!!!! Can not wait to see him at the Newport Folk Festival and possibly the Philadelphia Folkfest I hope!
So many emotions from my childhood rush through me when i here this beautiful music. Im so grateful for this dude.
Tallest man, tiniest desk.
This video is 12 years old. Wow!
I admire his way playing guitar. It looks like the chords are just perfect.
And the voice just make the song even better.
Thank you for hanging out there!
=)
almost 7 years dude, hell art never dies :)
Probably the best Tiny Desk besides The Front Bottoms. I could listen to this all day.
there are too few synonyms for "awesome" to do this performance justice...fucking talented. new fan.
I pray that he goes back to NPR for another concert in 2015
i agree!
+devlin leonard Probably won't. They don't bring artists on more than once.
+Ryan Palermo Chris Thile manages it by changing his mates at each performance
+Ryan Palermo They do every so often. They had Wilco on Twice.
His 2019 performance was immaculate. This is still my favorite though. So much passion.
This man is an exceptional guitar player. Hope he's still playing.
Hes going strong, just saw him in New Haven
2023 e ainda continua sendo incrivelmente bom!
Yepppp still listening in 2018. Hope I get the chance to meet this man one day. Pure raw talent.
My favorite part of this video is that during "The Gardener," he is having so much fun with the song. Being a musician myself, I love to see other artists who can show that they're having a good time performing their work.
Kristian is one of the main reasons I can feel some pride when I mention that I live in Sweden
Still sounds good, but once he became a lot more experienced and comfortable his music really resonates with his audience even more
+Tyler Gaylord I will take this thought with me when playing my guitar. I tend to rush also. I don't know I'm doing it till I record and replay.
Wow even you do it, Tyler Gaylord? That's very big of you to admit
Kristian Mattson was great to begin with, and he's just gotten better and better over the years... better singer, better player,, better performer. Each live show, better than the last. I don't know how he leaves it all on stage, every night.
He is so one of a kind. aint nothing like tallest man, amazing show
Shortly before this vid came out we got tickets to see TMOE in Asheville, NC in a repurposed church turned venue. Folding chairs. Only about 40-50 people at each of the two shows if I remember right. He didn't even use a PA, just walked around playing his guitar and singing these songs. Will never forget it! Was inches away from him hearing essentially the same experience the NPR team got at this Tiny Desk. :)
Sure rub it in lol
Astonishingly short for what i was expecting!... But then he grew on me....
I just love soft spoken he is, but how intense his singing is
I've seen this maybe 3 times and each time I thought "Well it's not bad." I have no idea what made me think that way. This is my 4th time watching this and i'm now realizing that this is amazing.
I listened to this years ago, and also tonight. Still in love!
The tallest man on earth on a tiny desk
My thoughts when i saw the Titel!
And he isn't even tall, haha. He's 1.70
There’s no such thing as having a “favourite song” by the tallest man on earth cause he just is my favourite song
+David Allman Wow. This might be the most intelligent comment I've ever come across in this accumulation of verbiage spew.
+David Allman As much as I love Bob Dylan, I have always thought that TTMOE is Bob Dylan 2.0.
There are no words for this. Too good on every level.
MisterMajister Besides cinematography, heh.
I Won't Be Found
The Tallest Man on Earth
Well if I ever see the morning
Just like a lizard in the spring
I'm gonna run out in the meadow
To catch the silence when it sings
I'm gonna force the Serengeti
To disappear into my eyes
Then when I hear your voices callin'
I'm gonna turn just inside out
Well if I ever get to slumber
Just like a mole deep in the ground
Hell, I won't be found
Deep in the dust forgotten gathered
I grow a diamond in my chest
I make reflections as the moon shines on
Turn to a villain as I rest
Well if I ever get to slumber
Just like a mole deep in the ground
Hell, I won't be found
I know there is a hollow
I need to fill it with a draft
Of all the words that I wont way
And with…
Wish the camerawork was half as good as the music.
full of confidence and guess what even more so now. kristian you are a true musician
Fantastic music. *Spoiler alert* My favorite part is the neck-slap at the end of Pistol Dreams
This was my introduction to Kristian about 7 years ago and since the first time I'd heard this video I think he's been my favorite artist.
What camera work! 10/10!
Parshan brilliant sarcasm ! 😂
Just brilliance.. just found this... Just Brilliance..
I thought his voice was annoying at first, but it's growing on me.
Just as Bob Dylan's.
Fenryt Cutlasmort honestly tallest man on earth's voice is way better than Bob Dylan's
Agreed, in my opinion his voice touches and reaches further too.
I still think it's kind of annoying. Feels like he's trying too hard
Seeing him in October in Manchester. He's marvellous!
Viva NPR Tiny Desk Concerts!
he needs to come back on the show. this is gold
Other than the fact that he's a great guitarist and has an interesting voice, I love how in every performance he gets so into it even though he's the only playing.
He’s got it all; voice, guitar skillz, and poetic abilities. I love everything he sings.
wtf with the camera angles!
he's too tall
haha
TheUltimateGC It's NPR, do you know what that stands for? No real need for Video wizards at NPR. However, it isn't terrible, it's artistic. Lighten up and enjoy the music.
newfoundlander1965
Calm thyself my dear random man who knows me not. 'Twas but a delicate comment for you see I am a very big fan of this Tall Man here and want only very much to be able to see him as he sings his sweet songs.
newfoundlander1965 also, fuck you. I know what NPR stands for, asswipe.
A L W A Y S makes me happy to hear Kristian perform....then, now, and looking forward to the new.
The gardner, 2009 I'm just now hearing THIS.
+JAMES JENKINS better late than never
+mglenwright09 You got that!
2018 e continua sendo uma obra de arte
I love the sound that guitar makes
