Fixed my failed paint job! Got a Rock painting tip for you. 🎨 Model Train Layout Update 91.

- I am excited about the Palisades now! Felt I had failed in the last video after painting them.
But with more time and another go at it, I really am happy with it now. I feel like a real model Railroader now.
I will show you the first step I took to fix it. Then I will show you where I ended up after a few hours of dabbing paint on.
Going to show you my last step in painting the cliffs. This step makes a big difference.
And it really enhances the look of rock outcroppings / cliffs.
Have some other progress to show you as well.
My Dad has been working on fascia board on the other side of the layout.
As well as more scenery work over by our “Nameless” tourist town. The mountains have dirt. And his retaining wall is taking shape.
One of my Cats 🐈 makes an appearance in this video. It is the softest cat I have ever had. Not sure why I am telling you that.

Model Railroad Layout Update 91.
Don,
That's an OK weathering technique. I had used it back in the 1960's. But I wasn't a big fan. Because of the way the black paint would run freely. In all sort of directions.
But back in Middle School I had a hideous Nun as a teacher. And she forced us to write with the long antiquated Fountain Pen. I despised her and this ugly blot on the society waiting to happen.
When the diluted paint and brush did not satisfy my weathering I remembered those damn fountain pens. In the bottom of my junk drawer.
I made as solution of black india ink and water. And applied it to cracks with the narrow tip of the pen.
To this day I despise diluted black paint, for deep shadow line, but I have at least accepted TARGETED INK SOLUTION to accomplish the same effect.

Hi ya Don. That looks great. The transition looks very natural now. And the adding of the beige and yellow tones really made your rock faces look very granite like. The tip at the end was very nice. Hadn’t seen that before. Merry Christmas to you all. See ya.

Thank you for subscribing. I have talked about it some in previous videos. I kind of cheated / Got resourceful on the wall. Years ago I made a latex mould copy of an existing rock wall on the layout. And I use that mold now to make other rock walls. Used about 4 of them in this wall. And then blended them together with other hydrocal. And hand carved it. One of the shots in this video has the original rock wall. It is the shot with a wood bridge in the foreground.
That does look much better! Even better than I imagined it would. And it's good to see you being "happy model railroader" again too.
Also, that looked like a proper C&S engine and train in the footage of the finished rocks -- do you have one running on the layout now, or was that just posed for the photo?
I did just staged it for the photo. It is one of our older DC brass locomotives. Although rumour has it that Jim has one of them and is working on converting it to DCC. Thanks.

the paint really added a lot of depth for such a shallow space.
i remember when that area was just 2-3 b+w photos taped to the backdrop haha. its come a long ways.
It definitely has come a long way. It has taken a while to get to hear. But I am quite happy with it. And its just going to get better. Thanks Leo

Buy yourself a rigger brush. The bristles are between 1" and 2 's long and very narrow. You can do detail with these.

Great job Don!! I figured you would get it lined out...the retaining wall looks really cool also. Your rock tip was very nice thanks for sharing, Guess the next build is the bridge . Is the lower bridge done and ready to install?
I was determined to make it work one way or the other. I have painted and test fit the bridge since this video. And it is going to look good. Jim brought in one of the lower bridges a few videos back to test fit it. And he took a back home. Not sure what the status is of the 2nd lower bridge is.

I use a finer brush
I will have to try that next time. The brush I used was the 1st one I picked up that was not Blunt, and it had a nice wedge shape to it.
