    I always recommend lightweight spackling over joint compound. They are very different. Lightweight spackling dries to the consistency of foam and can go on a little thicker than joint compound before cracking, although a second application will easily fill any cracks. I’d swear that Foam Putty is repackaged and relabeled lightweight spackling. Lightweight spackling, as Dave noted, is readily available at home centers and is less expensive than Foam Putty. I use lightweight spackling for everything from terraforming the scenic base to mortar for brick walls. Also, clean-up is as simple as wipe off the trowel and close the lid. No mixing and no waste. Also, no concerns about a little going down the drain, unlike plaster. I don’t like mixing plaster or cleaning that up, so, to me, lightweight spackling > joint compound and even Sculptamold. Hope this helps, Dave Foxx

      Yes, I'm fairly sure that spackle and foam putty are exactly the same thing.

    I like to use foam putty, in spite of its higher cost, whenever I need the filler to be waterproof.

    Thanks Dave learned alot from this video. Don't need lots of colors to make it look beautiful. Like the wet paint blending will give that a try. Also learned more about the brushs you use that is just as important. Can't wait for the next video.
    GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖

    Great educational tutorial Dave. Do you have any tips or tricks on how to achieve the appearance of the much smaller pieces of rock that fell and found piled up at the base of the mountain? Details such as painting techniques and material preference would be very helpful.

    Curious, Why did you apply the dark wash inbetween the mid base and the darker color? Wouldn't that darker color cover up the Black wash? Love your work. I'm in the middle of finishing a section of the Southwest desert on my first layout, the foam is fantastic, but messy. I have hand carved all my foam with a heavy duty Utility Knife, it's less messy than other tools I have tried. I hate sanding the foam but neccesary sometimes. Very good Videos!

      The dark wash is for deepening shadows. The shades I added after the dark wash are not darker. Subsequent layers of paint only hit the high spots, bringing out the mid tones and highlights. Have fun and embrace the mess!

      @@ThunderMesaStudio same as On30

      It helps to realize that it’s all the same scale. O, On30, On18. All O scale ==> 1/4” = 1 foot.
      Only thing that changes is the distance between the tracks.
