    14p for a KitKat. Amazing value compared to today. I remember crisps used to be 12p in the 80s. And golden wonder was the brand of choice. Have you seen how small the twirl and whisper bars are in the 4 pack costing £1.25? Any smaller, they'll be nothing there! Bounty was definitely paradise! Great chocolate and great ads!!!
    That's Katrina Skepper in the Flake ad - check her out - she also appeared in one of the James Bond main title sequences. Great jingle by the late Ronnie Bond who did endless jingles for ads.
    'Smarties Place' jingle written AND sung by Mike Batt!
    In the 80s those Milk Tray ads got shorter and shorter. The original actor Gary Myers played him for years (1968-1984). James Coombes took over the role in 1987.

    I rembember when some companies really did put real money inside their crisps, snacks and drinks. I won a few quids from couple of Walkers and won 10 pounds was inside the Ovaltine can. This was way back in 1988. The note was folded so small into a square shape and was placed inside a simple plastic.
    You won't ever find anything like that anymore without giving up your personal info and doesn't even guarantee you could get any prizes

    • @RetroSteveUK
      @RetroSteveUK  Год назад +2

      I do remember that. I've always wondered what happened to any cash in packets that might have ended up being disposed of in some way.

    • @herbert9241
      @herbert9241 Год назад

      I remember as late as the early '90s, cash-in-hand promotions inside crisp packets. A workmate landed a tenner; I found maybe a couple of free packet vouchers. Not complaining.
      Agreed about the loss of that type of promotion. I don't know if they still put 'gifts' (plastic effigy tat) inside boxes of breakfast cereal because I don't buy breakfast cereal - but what happened to the good old 'send (as in write and post) name and address' / 'answer a simple question' / 'coin a catchphrase' / 'collect vouchers' type of promotion?
      I think the unfortunate truth is that the entities which run those companies now have carved up a crony monopoly which corrupts our governments and spies on us through electrical gadgets. They're pushers, not dealers.

    This is a terrible thing to say, but Bounty bars make me sick. My Dad used to love them, and when we went out on a Saturday afternoon to search out model aeroplane engines, he always kept a few in the glove compartment. He especially liked the red ones - the dark chocolate. Anyway one afternoon we ran out of petrol in Bearwood of all places, Dad had to go to a phone box to call his friend to bring some, and I was very hungry and wanted my tea. As we sat, very cold, in the car, Dad said "you can have my Bounty bar if you like". So I did. And then I was violently sick. So I don't think coconut agrees with me. X

      I think we got our first colour telly when I was about 16. The rented b & w throughout my entire childhood was a constant source of ignominy as well as being irksome to my faculty of football nut. Ironically, always having been an aficionado of b-movies, the majority of my favourite films are b & w, and I don't think I've ever ventured to try the 'colorized' option in DVD extras. The one I'd like to see colourised is Arthur Ripley's 'Thunder Road' (1958 - starring Bob Mitchum, of course) but it's not available on the DVD edition I have.

    Applause and Relays didn’t hit my demographic area, it would be nice to see an Opal Fruits (made to make your mouth water) or Marathon advert before they were rebranded by their conglomerate owners. A trick of all the adverts, never mention the price, in fact make it seem as if they magically appear for free! Also some of the stranger purchase points like saying Cadbury’s Bourneville dark chocolate was “for adults only” , ah, simpler times.
