Double Decker. Have not one of those for ages. Funny fact, there was a high street in an English town (can't remember where) that suffered from a bad case of subsidence. A huge hole opened up which nearly swallowed up an actual double decker bus. Fortunately no one was badly injured. However, Cadburys were quick off the mark with their advertising and the next day they published an ad with a picture of the bus in the hole and the tagline: "Nothing fills a hole like a Double Decker".
The bus that fell into the hole happened in my home city of Norwich in 1988 (Earlham Road). A few holes opened up on main roads around that time due to historic chalk mines I think. I never knew about the Double Decker advert until fairly recently - very clever. 😁
I can just about recall the McVities adverts and the 54321 one. The Toffiffee advert I can date to post 1990 because of the split second shot of the generation of Mazda 323. God, I'm such a car anorack. 🤓
When sweets were a treat! Lucky to get some things once a week when I was young in the 70/80's. Now its seems kids have them all day everyday! Still love Skips. Double Deckers are a shadow of them former selves. Love the Dorito/Bruce Lee ad! never seen that before. Feel peckish for a PPPPPPPenguin too 😂Thanks Steve. Always look forward to your Friday Vid 👍
Am I alone in connecting a product to a very specific time? For me, that Smiths Tubes adverts conjures up very distinct primary 1 and primary 2 memories, and my school's dinner hall 😀 I loved those crisps (but even at that young age I was very sceptical of the merits of Smiths very popular Salt 'N' Shake, whose gimmick was that you could do the salting yourself and have a mixed bag of either greatly under-salted or greatly over-salted crisps, with maybe a crisp or two with the appropriate amount of seasoning - oddly fondly-remembered, despite clearly being crap 😆)
In America, we used to have our own Marathon candy bar that was similar to Curly Wurly that I loved as a kid - unfortunately, Mars discontinued it in 1981 due to poor sales
the days when Creme Eggs were a proper size, before they shrank them. I do take issue with the season bit though as back in the day you could get them at any time of year, making them seasonal was a more modern thing & an example of Cadbury shooting itself in the foot
Nice to see the great Sam Kelly in an advert (8:07) - he's not someone I can remember seeing in many, if any, before. Unlike Harry Enfield, but I'll happily watch any ad he's in - his Dime and Mercury ads (Greyson and Mr Cholmondley-Warner) are amongst the most memorable I've ever seen.
How did people in the UK react when the makers of the Marathon bar decided to change the same so that it would be the same everywhere? I wish it were easier to get British Cadbury in the US now. It just doesn't taste right since the US division was sold to a different company. I can't remember seeing Rolos in the US in decades. I actually found Toffifee in the US, but it's spelled differently for some reason.
A couple of lost treasures there. 54321 and smiths tubes, I’d love to see them return. Also, people talking about eating chocolate in the Marathon/Snickers ads without being arrested by the food police for not having goji berries and birdseed instead. I don’t remember widgets though.
All the people moaning about how all the sweets were bigger back when they were kids are forgetting a major factor. You were considerably smaller as children.
Pringles are the devil’s food, they don’t taste like they should be for human consumption but as the ad says “you can’t stop”. There’s some weird stuff in them
@@jwb52z9this is the thing though-they never did and its always been sour cream and onion. Even the launch advert only shows the onion one. So confusing haha.
That creme egg was almost rectangular, far bigger than today's butter bean size offering. Great nostalgic escape, thank you.
The Rolo ad cracked me up. I'm already laughing at him being pegged out in the sand and then you see the horse chewing. Classic. Cheers.
Good old days for sure! ☀️

Funnily enough, I had two of them just today. (Greedy-guts)
Now I fancy a Creme egg!
Love these old adverts 💙😆☀️
I'm sure the eggs in that advert look .. longer (?) than they are now.
@@RetroSteveUK I can actually say yes they did seem bigger, as I’m just eating one now! 😆
Good job there’s five in a pack 😜
Back in the day when shrinkflation wasn't a thing and chocolate contained actual chocolate and not just vegetable fats and sugar
Absolutely 😊👍

I looked forward to being given 10 pence to buy a bag of penny mixed sweets, and half a penny 😮 showing my age 😆

It's the look of the packaging on these old snacks that takes me straight back to specific times.
@@RetroSteveUK Oh yes, that's definitely a strong factor.

Quite a few candy bars I loved ended up being discontinued. I guess it sucks being in a minority of candy fans.
I bet David Thewlis never thought he’d be a Hollywood actor while eating Skips for an advert.
I remember him most recently from the 2006 remake of The Omen, as the photographer.

It is hard to beat UK/ European Chocolate even as an American I prefer UK sweets. I do enjoy older commercials/adverts
I never knew Poirot had tube mania. 😂
Good spot there. I know it's not him, but it don't half look like him.
I remember a Rowntree's ad featuring Jelly Tots - and possibly Dolly Mixtures, too... I wonder, have you found them? I haven't.
Not yet, but give it time. 😏
Tasty treats at the start of a fried-A LOL The sugar rush should last until Sundae Brunch

That Dime ad - I though that was some kind of insurance advert when it started. When Harry Enfield turned up though, I did a bit of a belly laugh. 🤣

The Marathon change to Snickers .. it did not go down well. A lot of us oldies are still moaning about it now. 🤣
We didn’t like it and still don’t. Same with Opal Fruits
54321 with REAL milk chocolate, why bugger me real chocolate i tell thee hehe, i thought they were great by the way.

Widgets must have been pretty short-lived. I don't remember them either.
I Loved Widgets, 1988 time they was out, but they wasnt out long.@@RetroSteveUK
when a cream egg was a size of a large egg now it's like a mini egg !! 😢
cor, MARATHON, post brexit we should of renamed it. THIS IS A WINNER lol
Yes, but cut out maybe 50% of the letters, so we're left with just "MARN" - so it matches the rest of our depleted economy.
@@RetroSteveUK haha, very good response :D i did enjoy all the clips in this collection - made me want to a Snickers, i mean a MARN lol.
Huge chocolate bars, shrinkflation abounds! 🤔🙄🤔
All the people moaning about how all the sweets were bigger back when they were kids are forgetting a major factor. You were considerably smaller as children.
Let's face it, it's probably a bit of both.
Everything was better in the 80's
9,59, is that Alan Rickman in the TWIX advert, in the blue shirt?
Looks a bit like him.
7:38 I’ve never understood the Pringles advertising slogan. ‘Once you pop, you can’t stop’. Yet they sell them in a tube with a lid??
That you karl?
Lid pops off maybe?
@@RetroSteveUK Yes, the can pops open. :)

9:52 is that fonejacker guy?
It don't think it's him - this was probably way before he'd have been doing stuff like that, but it is a very similar type of humour.
I swear them green pringles was called sour cream and chive, not onion. Mandela effect!
I think there are a lot of dips now with the sour cream and chive flavour. I always struggle to remember the actual green-tube Pringles flavour.
@@RetroSteveUK i always remember because they also had chives on the actual crisp. So strange.
No, Pringles did have that flavor decades ago. You're right.

why can't they go back to calling Snickers MARATHON!!!!
They did briefly, but it was only a temporary promotion. ☹️
Is there still a milkybar kid?
I don’t think so, they’re probably not allowed one anymore.
@@mgthestrange9098 😂I
Yeah, but he's about 55 now.
Where,s Steve.
He's hiding under the TV. 😉
Snickers is wrong
