So according to the news either the landlord or a tenant of the landlord divided a single family apartments to SRO apts. The rent is now going up to $1200.00 from $900 because the sub units have been eliminated to regular size again.
It appears each apart was split into 8 rooms and they shared the kitchen. At $900/rm, the landlord or crafty tenant was making $7200/mo on a $1200/mo apartment. What a rip off.
Since the landlord is the one ripping out the walls and raising the rents, he sure does look complicit in the scam. And being charged $900/mo for a room that can barely fit a bed is criminal.

It was the tenant who did this...unbeknown to the landlord. When you live in a city with rent control, tenants will use and abuse the landlord in whatever way they can to make money off of him/her.

What did she think would happen if the owner was forced to tear the walls down? Did she hope she'd get the space all to herself, the rent reduced, and live happily ever after?

Now all the tenants are out on the street for this persons stupidity.

If the info doesn't match and the person swears they own the property walk away, they're either illegally subletting or scamming people. This is common for Latin immigrants, one person with an apartment would sublet parts of their apartment to other folks, usually charging 300 or 400 a month. Here in NY a is common to see 4-5 families living in a 2 family home. Then when a fire or other emergency happens they are screwed because they can’t get out or fire department can’t come in due to illegal walls where before was a door or walkway

First the owner converted a single family unit into a "hotel" at 0:58, then the owner states that their tenant is subleasing to these families, so someones story isn't adding up. Would like to see how the owners lawsuit turns out and if there's an actual tenant to blame for the living situations.
Also, I feel for the guy at 1:25, but it's not like the people that moved in didn't put themselves in that situation. They saw the living conditions and paid into it. If you can't afford to live in that area then pack things up and go to a lower COL area. If you wan't to stay, then look into state/locally funded programs.

If the tenants don't want to live in substandard housing, they can move out anytime. No one forced them to stay, whether the landlord actually put up the division or not. With 25 people living together, you would think at least one of them recorded the landlord throwing away their belongings, changing the locks, and building the dividers. It sounds like the tenants put up with a small living space when the rent was cheap. Now, they are unhappy, because the landlord raised the rent.

@@donaldkasper8346I don't think that's true. It's illegal in most places to raise the rent just because someone else moved in. Idk if it's a California law, but in San Francisco, a landlord can't raise the rent for that reason. If it's costing them more in operating costs to have additional tenants, then they can go to court to have the rent increased. There are laws dictating how many people can live in a unit due to fire safety, but the landlord would have to evict you, not turn a blind eye to the danger and charge you more money.

Beggars can’t be choosers. This is what happens when you slap the hands that feed you, or when you want to have your cake and eat it it too. I’ve seen so many disgusting tenants my whole life, that’s why I choose to live alone and not rent out to anyone, even if it means only eating crackers and drinking water every day. If you end up with a tenant from hell, good luck. Landlords matter and have rights as well. Grant it I’m sure many landlords are disgusting as well, but that’s why you have the freedom of choice, if you don’t like it, then LEAVE, go somewhere else!

Haha well if this isnt a lesson in stupid. She complains to the city about a code violation, which made additional units allowing her residence, they shut the building down because of said code violation, putting her out in the street.
Im supposed to feel sorry for her? All her former neighbors should be kicking her to the curb for making them homeless too. And now others are complaining that theyll have to pay more for their bigger apartments?
What is the world coming to with people this clueless?
Code is code but if you didnt like the accomodations you were always free to go elsewhere.

@@donaldkasper8346 no they kicked them out because they reported the land lord for renting out a single family unit to multiple families. But the city kicked out the tenants who reported the land lord because the rooms were unlawful.... They kinda played themselves smh . I feel bad but c'mon people this was obviously gonna happen

No no no , you cannot legally rent out unpermitted spaces like this. They need to get a lawyer and they will be able to recoup all the money they have paid towards rent. So if they've been living there a year they're going to get their 12 months back. I've seen this happen.

    • @johnlucier5654
      @johnlucier5654 Год назад +4

Youre right its a violation of code but these tenants deserve zero legal compensation if we just consider basic ethics. They paid reduced rent based upon smaller spaces, they knew what they were getting when they moved in. It says they paid $800-1200 a month, where does that get you a full size apartment in LA! Thats 1/3 to 1/2 the going rate. They were stupid to complain to the city, now they move to a fully code compliant space at full price if they can find one.
