this music takes me back to the fall of 1986 when I was on my honeymoon in new england-wonderful memories. too bad the marriage didn't last forever, but I do have some great memories of the good times and 2 fantastic kids from it. I agree with the others who talk about music being so important-it can truly heal a broken heart, and I couldn't live without music.

I saw George Winston play at Lincoln Center back in the day. I was dating this post hippy chick and I was amazed when she arrived at my place and was incensed that I was not dressed properly for an event at Lincoln Center. After some back and forth, with me being obstinate in my attire, we ultimately attended the event. We get to our seats, lights go down and George Winston walks out on stage with no shoes, a flannel shirt and jeans. Ha. Great show and being vindicated didnt hurt....

AND I assume you and Little Miss Shallow are not longer an item - yes? Good on you if you answered in the affirmative. ~~~ I saw him decades ago in Cincinnati - same attire. He told us as he got settled in that his agent or someone told him ne needed to tone down his attire because he was too formal. :) I think he did something like rolled up his sleeves, stood up, and asked the audience - "So. What do you think?"
      Wonderful evening.
      "Colors/Dance" is still riveting.

I share a similar story as @tomword. I was a young bride. I married a musician when I was 19. My husband went to Berklee College of Music and loved listening to George Winston, Will Akerman and Michael Hedges. We settled in Mill Valley, Ca. at the time and my husband played George Winston during those long beautiful afternoons. I remember looking out over the hills of Marin through the redwoods with Autumn playing in the background. I was in a wonderland as I watched the afternoons fade into dusk. My husband passed away 4 years ago and this music makes me wish for one more day with him -Just one day! This music really helped to shape me into who I am today.

I guess I really needed that. Now I watch my grandkids so my daughter can finish college and I love my family so much but my Soul is so so lonely For just one day again, George Winston, fire in the fireplace, Glass of wine looking into eyes that make my heart jump and my body shake out of the love I see

In the mid 80s, fresh out of college, I was a Midwestern kid who moved out to Los Angeles for a job. I was dating a mesmerizingly beautiful Southern California girl. It was an exciting time of discovery for me: first job, first apartment, first time out on my own. Many nights, she and I would lay tangled up in bed naked, still glistening and breathless from intimacy. The windows would be open with the warm breeze rustling the curtains while this music played on KTWV. We were young and at the top of our game. Neither of us had bellies or wrinkles or life's troubles weighing down on us. Our lives were spread out ahead of us like presents under the tree on Christmas morning. No one could have convinced us that we wouldn't be young forever.
That was 36 years ago. I'm now over 60. I have a wife of almost 30 years, and she is an amazing mom and grandma, and I love her dearly. I have long since lost track of my Southern California girl. In my memory, I can still see her eyes locked on mine in the heat of passion or out on the beach as the sun set. She was beautiful, we were young, wild and free, and life was simple.
Life has been great and I wouldn't change a thing. But... given the chance, I would go back, even just for one night, to that cramped apartment in LA. naked and entwined with that girl who I don't even know anymore. This music would be playing, the window open, and the curtains moving gently in the warm breeze of my youth all those many years ago.

I always played piano by ear; they bought me a used piano and I played these albums over and over until I could play these and several songs from his album Winter as well. yes, it brings back some great memories...I remember hearing this when my beautiful and adoring wife would come into the room- topless and dancing in a very seductive way until we embraced, we'd open up a good bottle of merlot, and we would entertain ourselves as the misty night continued and the harvest moon gently peaked thru the dark, flowing clouds. We both knew that soon we would be together as one, hearing each others heart gently beating......and then I wake up and remember I need to put the steaks on the grill as the kids are getting hungry.

I entered the pathway to recovery October 1987, this was my soundtrack to a wonderful journey, I am blessed in so many ways. And this music is a transporter to those times where I was so unsure...life is difficult and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Peace brothers and sisters on your journeys and struggles. Remember the meaning of life is....that it ends. Embrace it all.

    My November Guest
My Sorrow, when she's here with me,
Thinks these dark days of autumn rain
    Are beautiful as days can be;
    She loves the bare, the withered tree;
She walked the sodden pasture lane.
Her pleasure will not let me stay.
She talks and I am fain to list:
She's glad the birds are gone away,
She's glad her simple worsted gray
Is silver now with clinging mist.
    The desolate, deserted trees,
The faded earth, the heavy sky,
The beauties she so truly sees,
She thinks I have no eye for these,
And vexes me for reason why.
Not yesterday I learned to know
The love of bare November days
Before the coming of the snow,
But it were vain to tell her so,
And they are better for her praise.
    Robert Frost

The Fall is also my favorite time of year! I love the color changes, the new crispness in the air after the heat of summer, the deer coming down out of the hills in the early morning or late evening, now that it isn't so warm, the changing position of the sun out my window, all just before the blanket of snow comes to make everything quiet and clean again! I love spring with all its new life, but for some reason, Autumn remains my favorite, no matter what part of the country i am living in when it happens! I lived by the ocean for years, but I live in the mountains now, where the colors are so much more apparent, and I love it!

My 4th grade literature teacher loved George Winston and his music dearly. She would always put on his music as we were working on assignments, and this album, along with Forest and his Christmas album, were the ones that stuck with me throughout the years, and every so often, I'd come back and revisit his music. I should have come back much more than I did, and I regret not further supporting him while I could. He was one of the most underrated artists of his time, I'd say. Every piece of his is beautiful and emotionally provoking in some way or another.

I got this album in 1982. It rocked my adolescent world. I would put the record on, sit in my room, and do homework. It soon became my "go to" album for falling asleep. Longing/Love will always hold a special place in my heart - reminds me of my first crush. In 1986 or 1987 Alex Kerr and I went to see him at the Kennedy Center in DC. He wore his trademark flannel shirt and socks. When the lights went up for intermission at least half the audience was asleep. It was really bizarre thing see a sea of adults sleeping in the majestic Kennedy Center. I guess they had the same Pavlovian reaction to George "bedtime" Winston as me. One of the great ones.

I find this album the most melancholy sounding of all George Winston's albums. There's something about the chords that makes me ponder roads not taken, regrets, uncertainty for the future. I think the title of the album is apt because autumn is a time of transition from the vibrancy of summer to the dormancy of winter. The autumn of our lives can be a time of uncertainty, but then again, so can our teen years. I remember the first time I listened to this album in a dark basement in my college years. I've often wished someone would set this album to video, but I'm afraid it would come out mostly sad. The one notable happy break for me is in Colors at 12:37 where I can envision white birds flapping their wings. Awesome stuff though. I was fortunate to see him once in concert in his flannel shirt.

Music is one of God's gifts he's given to his children for our enjoyment! It's one of those things that help us ,in the world we live in, it lifts us when we are down, it helps us remember we are slive!

It is beautiful Autumn and Long/Longing in particular: love; I continue to recommend to it those that want to hear the best in music. I love this album and George's playing all these years later. Wonderful...xoxoxo

an overcast day, a thunderstorm with the rain, sitting before an open fire at night, all of these moods are captured by the music of George Winston especially this autumn album. Sweet peace and calm overwhelmed our spirit when we listen to his genius in piano and pianissimo.

So very sorry that I never saw a live performance. I always thought there'd be more time. Rest in peace George Winston. Your music lives on.

I've loved this album for 30 years. I've had many wonderful nights with a good glass of brandy, soft lighting, pen & paper with the world shut out while listening to this.

34 years for me. Longing Love was playing on Musical Strastreams radio show back in the early 80s in Chicago. Good Times!

@@williamgilley7061 LOL! I had the urge to listen to this tonight and this is the first I've seen of the comments. Back in the day before email, I had to actually write to friends that i moved away from and this always put me in a good, nostalgic mood.

This was one of the albums my dad had on his cd rack. We were never close but I went through all his music and fell in love with this album. He passed unexpectedly and I have no idea how to even start thinking about what he meant in my life. But I do know that I will always have his music.

Winston is a favorite since back in the late 80s at college in the US I would buy too many of his CDs. This reminds me of Rhode Island in the fall. Greetings from Kenya

No, that distinction actually quite deservedly goes to the pipe organ. That's why it's called the King of Instruments.
