So how in the heck do they have Ashton Jeanty as a Heisman candidate playing a Mountain West schedule and Dylan Sampson is nowhere near it playing in the SEC? He’s not even on the Doak Walker list. Do they devalue the toughness of playing in the SEC with elite stats or what?

LSU was in the same exact spot last year, FSU was 9-3 at the 13th spot in 2022, 4 teams were 9-3 and ranked in the 9, 10, 11, 12 spots in 2018, Stanford was 9-3 ranked 12 in 2017, 3 teams were 9-3 and ranked 11, 12, and 13 in 2016 and ole miss was 9-3 and ranked 13 in 2015. This is normal, relax

The majority of college football want SOS tied to the winning percentage of your opponents. Because if it was tied to the quality of the teams you face, it'll lean heavily in favor of the SEC & B1G. And the majority don't want us to have another benefit to take advantage of.

Josh, I love the show and have watched every episode since the 2020 *offseason*. Auto-bids, while broken, have been responsible for adding such high stakes to so many games late into November this season. I mean, without the auto-bids, are you going to Arizona state vs BYU in November? Think about how auto-bids have brought playoff life and hope to teams like SMU, Iowa State, A&M, Arizona State, and more up to the very last regular season game of the year! While there are things to correct with the 12-team playoff EXPERIMENT, you can’t deny that it has ADDED luster to the regular season instead of DIMINISHED it. It's more about the auto bids/conference champions having first round byes, that is the problem. I don't mind the auto bids but put them ranked where they should be in the bracket. Currently Ohio Stank, Georgia, Oregon and Texas should have first round byes, but instead some ACC team and B12 team will most likely get 2 of the byes.
For real. Every problem he has I hear and I think "that's so sick" auto bids will make college football even and balanced because everyone is going to get a chance to win a championship not just two conferences

Not much point in ND scheduling and winning at A&M if people like Josh ignore it. Kyle Field is a tough place to win, especially when A&M had Moss. If Nd had lost that game, we would hear about it constantly. But ND won, so it is simply ignored.
If you have to hang your hat on one game, then you're no different from a G5 team. You'll need to come up with a different argument. That's not mentioning your biggest flaw. Nobody has an easier path to the playoffs than ND. Nobody! Personally, I believe that's by design. I believe it was designed that way to get ND used to the playoffs, so when they change the format... ND will be forced to join a conference (B1G) to continue the access. (That's 100% my conspiracy theory, and time will tell)

The committee is treating ND if we are a top team like a conference loser and ND isn't going to give up it's independence with a deal like that. ND has also scheduled Texas and Alabama in their future schedules. We scheduled a&m for a home and home. We play Clemson occasionally and USC every year. We scheduled Georgia home and home a few years back and lost at Georgia by a few points it's not like we don't schedule big time teams. Ole Miss and Alabama both _should_ drop lower than that in a power/odds-making rating, because... Now that _everything_ in the college football world rises and sets on the playoff and nothing but the playoff, and it is suddenly known those teams will not make the playoff, many/most of their players (and probably coaches too) will be operating on low-effort cruise control for their final regular season game and bowl game. Wow!!! KU is rated again. Never thought I’d see it again after the 1-5 start. And yes, I noticed that you tried warning Prime and the buffaloes about a potential upset. Odd fact because you mentioned USC leading every game in the 4th quarter. KU has led in all but one 4th quarter, and lost the lead to TCU with 2 minutes to go in the third. 6 Ls. Partnering with QuikTrip is a great decision. They were created in my hometown “Tulsa” and they’re now the best gas station that exist. Plus it’s an actually one of the few gas station jobs that actually have a future and growth to them.

Thank you so much for talking about how stupid the auto bids are. Ive been saying this since they announced the format last year. The 12 best teams should be in. Yes conference champs should be considered and winning your conference should give you a push towards going to the playoff, but it shouldn't automatically give you a ticket to the playoff
The problem with that is the cfp doesn’t need to be a conference tournament. Because it can be argued that the top 12 sec teams are better than Boise st or Indiana.
Bama was -13.5 against Oklahoma. It's why we play the games. With their rankings right now, Arizona State is still behind Bama and Ole Miss and would miss the playoff with no top 5 conference champion auto-bid. Determining the best teams should give plenty of weight to a conference champion. It helps eliminate the big conference bias and benefit of the doubt we see given to incredibly flawed teams like an Alabama.

But they do have wins over teams that were ranked when they played. Those teams fell out of the rankings after losing to Texas, and a&m is in the perfect position for that to happen to them too.

From where I sit Florida might be playing better than anyone not named Georgia in that conference. Just my opinion. But I'm not sure they will put much stock in a hot team. But S Carolina has the advantage of playing the 12th ranked team. And like mentioned, it would be hard to justify jumping ahead of Ole Miss or Bama based on head to head.... Unless of course they both lose.

Unfortunately with head to head SC won’t get a shot unless like you said others lose. Is there a way to adjust your power ratings based on the failures of talent profile. I always feel like your model is just FanDuel light. And you often disagree with the model because it overrates teams based on preseason talent profile which should not be a factor in week 10

With the advent of NIL, these guys are now pros so we need to go to pro-style playoffs. I can't even imagine how f'd up it would be if the NFL set their playoff field like this. 4 main conferences, 3 or 4 divisions each, 2 or 3 wildcards (participation trophies) for the cannon fodder teams. All set by won-lost records. No subjectivity, no media induced chaos. Real playoffs.
I agree about the A&M-Tex game. The shoe should fit well on the other foot. They got completely ambushed twice as a road favorite this year against South Carolina and Auburn. The intensity of those crowds is what playing road night games in the SEC a little different than any others. As a Buckeye/Big ten boy, I'll admit they're are only a small handful of night road venues that could be remotely to comparable. And they won't get up like that for just anybody. Especially when the home team was a 500 or below team. And definitely not for a middle of the pack bunch like A&M. Two of the best games I've watched this year as far as entertainment value for sure. Especially the crowd roar when the wr dropped that 2 point conversation at Auburn. You'd think they beat an undefeated,top ranked Bama squad
@JoshPateCFB Mr. Pate I have an idea and if you see this message, in one of your next shows can you talk about it for me the committee can see this. The idea is To stop all of this Bias on the SEC and BIG 10 teams, Every single Top 5 power conferences teams from the ACC,BIG10,BIG 12,SEC and MW should have 1 Game against any team they select from each of those conferences have a total of 5 mandatory games from different conferences. That will equal out the playoffs rankings so there strength of schedules would be equal in terms of putting who is actually top 25 instead of putting teams with more loses over teams that are undefeated or with better records. I am completely convinced that way of scheduling games will make the CFB playoffs balanced and equal.

@JoshPateCFB My problem with removing auto bids for championship wins is the obvious lack of reward for a grueling schedule. If Georgia wins the SEC, I don't trust the committee not to put the Big 10 loser ahead of them or even Penn State for that matter based on current rankings. Ohio State is hardly being punished if they do in fact finish as the 5 seed. OSU would have the easiest path to the semifinals.
I like Automatic Qualifiers. I think the problem is giving an AQ anything more than mere access. I treat it like the NCAA Basketball tourney, where the conf champs punch a ticket to the bracket, but are seeded where they are seeded. So like Boise for instance would be in, but are seeded based on ranking. Instead of being the 4 seed they would be at the 11. The other thing I would change is don't lock the bracket, There is no reason that the highest ranked/seeded team doesn't have to play the lowest seeded remaining team left on the bracket and the 2nd highest vs the 2nd lowest and so on.
Freaking Texas Longhorns have not played one SEC night game. The only opponent they played that was a tough opponent was Georgia and they got their ass handed to them. Texas has a lot to prove.
Aggies are far from tough. When Texas beats them, it will just be another “easy team on the easy Schedule that everyone claims Texas has”. I mean we all saw them lose to Auburn. Texas will be fine and they will get their rematch
Texas played more teams that are going to bowl games than anyone in the SEC. If Louisiana Monroe wins this weekend, that will make 10 teams out of the 12 that Texas played that's going to bowl games.
Everybody knew Texas had an easy schedule since it was announced. Similar to Missouri, even A&M's schedule was favorable. So why be angry or outraged now? Someone has an easier schedule every year. It just so happens they got theirs on their first year in the SEC. If Texas are frauds, then they won't make it to the SEC championship game, let alone win it. And they won't have success in the playoffs. Nature has a way of balancing itself out. But if you just hate Texas to hate Texas, that's another issue.
Josh the reason why you haven't seen the Texas high gear from last year is very simple...they lost a dozen NFL level players. This team is heavily dependent on the portal for offensive skill players and they still haven't completely gelled. Maybe it happens this week?!? 🤘
What they may as well do is make it 16 teams, get rid of the automatic bids, and have the entire brackets filled up before the conference championships. Even here team #17 will complain. Nothing will fix all the problems of this new system, but making it simpler is about the best they can do. It works well enough for college basketball. Conference championships are mostly for bragging rights anyway.
Hear me out. Group of 5 has a playoff right after conference championship week (format can be similar to power 5 playoff with the exception of auto bids) and the winner then gets an automatic 12 seed in the Power 5 playoffs. We also get rid of auto bids in Power 5 playoff, also after every rounds the playoffs reseed so that way if you earn the #1 seed you actually get a fair match up. So the #1 seed will always play the lowest ranked seed from the first round of the playoffs
From the AP poll to the BCS, to the 4 team playoff and now the 12 team we have had to endure the seemingly endless hypothetical BS. Just let the teams play and it will work itself out.
For all the B12 fans complaining the solution is simple: schedule more games against some of these G5 teams. If Boise played a B12 team this year, the committee probably wouldn't be in the position they're in rn. I mean Tulane's loss to K-State is what will most likely keep them out. Without it they would probably be ranked above ASU rn.

We (Tennessee) have our hands full this weekend with Vanderbilt. Vandy is scrappy. What scares me is our (Tennessee) offense isn't good. It's been this way for two straight years. If any defense pushes back on our offense it seems like they can't function, and we have no DAWGS on offense, and play calling starts to get predictable because we have NO PASS GAME. Vanderbilt is more than capable of embarassing us and they will if we don't come in this game with our hair on fire. Im sick of barely winning SEC games. We have struggled in every single game we have won unless it was a cupcake team.

Realistically of things fall the way the bracket shows now, whoever loses the B1G championship game will absolutely have the easier path which would incentivize a team to punt on their most important game of the season (at that point anyways). I’ve always had the belief that the 12 team playoff should take the top 12 teams and create the bracket based on that. Unfortunately I don’t ever see that happening because then the conference championship games would be meaningless outside of bragging rights

Josh, I love the show and have watched every episode since the 2020 *offseason*. Auto-bids, while broken, have been responsible for adding such high stakes to so many games late into November this season. I mean, without the auto-bids, are you going to Arizona state vs BYU in November? Think about how auto-bids have brought playoff life and hope to teams like SMU, Iowa State, A&M, Arizona State, and more up to the very last regular season game of the year! While there are things to correct with the 12-team playoff EXPERIMENT, you can’t deny that it has ADDED luster to the regular season instead of DIMINISHED it. Regardless, keep up the good work and commentary

It's more about the auto bids/conference champions having first round byes, that is the problem. I don't mind the auto bids but put them ranked where they should be in the bracket. Currently Ohio Stank, Georgia, Oregon and Texas should have first round byes, but instead some ACC team and B12 team will most likely get 2 of the byes.

Not much point in ND scheduling and winning at A&M if people like Josh ignore it. Kyle Field is a tough place to win, especially when A&M had Moss. If Nd had lost that game, we would hear about it constantly. But ND won, so it is simply ignored.

Nobody has an easier path to the playoffs than ND. Nobody! Personally, I believe that's by design. I believe it was designed that way to get ND used to the playoffs, so when they change the format... ND will be forced to join a conference (B1G) to continue the access. (That's 100% my conspiracy theory, and time will tell)

The committee is treating ND if we are a top team like a conference loser and ND isn't going to give up it's independence with a deal like that. ND has also scheduled Texas and Alabama in their future schedules. We scheduled a&m for a home and home. We play Clemson occasionally and USC every year. We scheduled Georgia home and home a few years back and lost at Georgia by a few points it's not like we don't schedule big time teams. ND is not going to be forced into a conference anytime soon with a playoff format, it's the opposite.

As an Alabama fan for much of the last 50 years, this is the first year that I have ever been unsure whether Alabama will beat Auburn.
Partnering with QuikTrip is a great decision. They were created in my hometown “Tulsa” and they’re now the best gas station that exist. Plus it’s an actually one of the few gas station jobs that actually have a future and growth to them.
Need Chuggy on the back shelf. Maybe do something from each trip, like a mini helmet, program, something subtle but clear. logistics might be too annoying or tough for that.

Thank you so much for talking about how stupid the auto bids are. Ive been saying this since they announced the format last year. The 12 best teams should be in. Yes conference champs should be considered and winning your conference should give you a push towards going to the playoff, but it shouldn't automatically give you a ticket to the playoff
The problem with that is the cfp doesn’t need to be a conference tournament. Because it can be argued that the top 12 sec teams are better than Boise st or Indiana.
Bama was -13.5 against Oklahoma. It's why we play the games. With their rankings right now, Arizona State is still behind Bama and Ole Miss and would miss the playoff with no top 5 conference champion auto-bid. Determining the best teams should give plenty of weight to a conference champion. It helps eliminate the big conference bias and benefit of the doubt we see given to incredibly flawed teams like an Alabama.

From where I sit Florida might be playing better than anyone not named Georgia in that conference. Just my opinion. But I'm not sure they will put much stock in a hot team. With the advent of NIL, these guys are now pros so we need to go to pro-style playoffs. I can't even imagine how f'd up it would be if the NFL set their playoff field like this. 4 main conferences, 3 or 4 divisions each, 2 or 3 wildcards (participation trophies) for the cannon fodder teams. All set by won-lost records. No subjectivity, no media induced chaos. Real playoffs.

I agree about the A&M-Tex game. The shoe should fit well on the other foot. They got completely ambushed twice as a road favorite this year against South Carolina and Auburn. The intensity of those crowds is what playing road night games in the SEC a little different than any others. As a Buckeye/Big ten boy, I'll admit they're are only a small handful of night road venues that could be remotely to comparable. And they won't get up like that for just anybody. Especially when the home team was a 500 or below team. And definitely not for a middle of the pack bunch like A&M. Two of the best games I've watched this year as far as entertainment value for sure. Especially the crowd roar when the wr dropped that 2 point conversation at Auburn. You'd think they beat an undefeated,top ranked Bama squad
@JoshPateCFB Mr. Pate I have an idea and if you see this message, in one of your next shows can you talk about it for me the committee can see this. The idea is To stop all of this Bias on the SEC and BIG 10 teams, Every single Top 5 power conferences teams from the ACC,BIG10,BIG 12,SEC and MW should have 1 Game against any team they select from each of those conferences have a total of 5 mandatory games from different conferences. That will equal out the playoffs rankings so there strength of schedules would be equal in terms of putting who is actually top 25 instead of putting teams with more loses over teams that are undefeated or with better records. I am completely convinced that way of scheduling games will make the CFB playoffs balanced and equal.

@JoshPateCFB My problem with removing auto bids for championship wins is the obvious lack of reward for a grueling schedule. If Georgia wins the SEC, I don't trust the committee not to put the Big 10 loser ahead of them or even Penn State for that matter based on current rankings. Ohio State is hardly being punished if they do in fact finish as the 5 seed. OSU would have the easiest path to the semifinals.
I like Automatic Qualifiers. I think the problem is giving an AQ anything more than mere access. I treat it like the NCAA Basketball tourney, where the conf champs punch a ticket to the bracket, but are seeded where they are seeded. So like Boise for instance would be in, but are seeded based on ranking. Instead of being the 4 seed they would be at the 11. The other thing I would change is don't lock the bracket, There is no reason that the highest ranked/seeded team doesn't have to play the lowest seeded remaining team left on the bracket and the 2nd highest vs the 2nd lowest and so on.

Freaking Texas Longhorns have not played one SEC night game. The only opponent they played that was a tough opponent was Georgia and they got their ass handed to them. Texas has a lot to prove.

Everybody knew Texas had an easy schedule since it was announced. Similar to Missouri, even A&M's schedule was favorable. So why be angry or outraged now? Someone has an easier schedule every year. It just so happens they got theirs on their first year in the SEC.
If Texas are frauds, then they won't make it to the SEC championship game, let alone win it. And they won't have success in the playoffs. Nature has a way of balancing itself out. But if you just hate Texas to hate Texas, that's another issue.

Imo. Find your top twelve teams and let the top draft their opponents. Adds drama an extra motivational/psychological dynamic.
What they may as well do is make it 16 teams, get rid of the automatic bids, and have the entire brackets filled up before the conference championships. Even here team #17 will complain. Nothing will fix all the problems of this new system, but making it simpler is about the best they can do. It works well enough for college basketball. Conference championships are mostly for bragging rights anyway.
Hear me out. Group of 5 has a playoff right after conference championship week (format can be similar to power 5 playoff with the exception of auto bids) and the winner then gets an automatic 12 seed in the Power 5 playoffs. We also get rid of auto bids in Power 5 playoff, also after every rounds the playoffs reseed so that way if you earn the #1 seed you actually get a fair match up. So the #1 seed will always play the lowest ranked seed from the first round of the playoffs

Josh said he wasn't on the committee and wouldn't be next year. There is too much "BS" and politics involved for people like Josh to sit a the table.
For all the B12 fans complaining the solution is simple: schedule more games against some of these G5 teams. If Boise played a B12 team this year, the committee probably wouldn't be in the position they're in rn.
I mean Tulane's loss to K-State is what will most likely keep them out. Without it they would probably be ranked above ASU rn.
I thought the Big 12 champ gets an auto bid? Is it only the top 4 ranked conference champs? I.e if the G5 top ranked team is ranked above the Big 12 champ, then the Big 12 champ could be left out?
To give the top seed a bye and then a neutral site game versus a home first round game against a lesser opponent is ridiculous. What did the top seed actually win?

We (Tennessee) have our hands full this weekend with Vanderbilt. Vandy is scrappy. What scares me is our (Tennessee) offense isn't good. It's been this way for two straight years. If any defense pushes back on our offense it seems like they can't function, and we have no DAWGS on offense, and play calling starts to get predictable because we have NO PASS GAME.
Vanderbilt is more than capable of embarassing us and they will if we don't come in this game with our hair on fire. Im sick of barely winning SEC games. We have struggled in every single game we have won unless it was a cupcake team.
How do you have Ohio state over Oregon in the JP poll when Oregon beat them? Interesting take… I do 100% agree with the 5 seed issue. Realistically of things fall the way the bracket shows now, whoever loses the B1G championship game will absolutely have the easier path which would incentivize a team to punt on their most important game of the season (at that point anyways). I’ve always had the belief that the 12 team playoff should take the top 12 teams and create the bracket based on that. Unfortunately I don’t ever see that happening because then the conference championship games would be meaningless outside of bragging rights
