Currently listening to this album while working on college homework and this sounds just as amazing, if not better than the original songs! ZUN's works never cease to amaze me, even to this day.
THIS, out of every game ost ZUN has worked on is my favorite, no song I'd argue no song here is a dud, and each has a significant quality that keep me coming back to it. and I have alot of things to say about, so I'll go one-by-one which each song ^~^ FAIRY DANCE This song is dizzying, it sounds incomplete and confusing, but what I found so interesting about it. ZUN stated in his description of the song that he wanted to lighten up the mood for the empty and lifeless feeling of a motionless title screen, he quickly wrote up this song in a day and he described it as feeling "lonelier with the song (^^;" and also kinda what I feel, when I listen to this song I get reminded of the loneliness of staring at this screen and it kinda makes me sad ;-; VELVET MAIDEN I always really love VIVIT's themes and this one's probably my second favorite just behind PANDORA'S BOX, the song is very energetic, like its stabbing its energy in you ;-; the fast and jittery pianos isn't unique to this song, but I love how well used it is ^~^ CASTLE EXPLORER For a while, I probably would've said tis was muh favorite outta the bunch, not anymore but this song is still wonderful ^~^ I love the short melody in the song is used throughout the song, It's a motif right? The idea goes through a journey through the song being jumpy and fungoing at the start, then slowly developing into an emotional and powerful final section that rides on the piano reallyy well ORPHIC POETRY That intro is beautiful... the next section onwards is kinda messy but I like it, it feels like a clumsy display of giddy and prowess, they're showing off (^^; Also I really love what you did here 13:30 , the BWAMP instrument I find really funn HOLY KNIGHT OF ORLEANS ok the intro you did kinda threw me for a loop, I'm so used to hearing it start out with the soft piano notes ;-; This song is probably most people's favorite out of this OST, its so fancy and regal, and there's alot of moving parts and sections in this song, strong strings, brass(?) and elegant pianos. This versions a bit more lowkey than the original, its sweet ^~^ NEW ILLUSION I've talked about this song on a video essay of mine, Its one of my favorite "touhou" songs AS A WHOLE and muh 2nd fav seihou song (only behind PANDORA) so of course I wanted to hear what you did with it ^^ I feel like it's missing the cluttered and messy "flying through a category 5 cyclone winds" energy the original has, instead replaced with DU-DU-DU-DU-DU-DU-DU synths(?) anyways the piano part is still beautiful which is all that matters ^~^ MY MAID This song is probably my least favorite song on the tracklist, BUT ITS STILL GOOD. I'd listen to this song for 29:13 alone, its great but it's fairly short before it loops. Looking into ZUN's description of the song, he's blabbering about some mad cow's disease of somnthing idk ;-; theres not much else to say, even for zoom WARRIOR MAIDEN Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like LUNAR CLOCK? I mean WARRIOR and MAID, that's sakuya! but morgan (character's theme) is a doctor ;-; She's also suspiciously similar looking to Rikako from TH3... At first I thought this song was kinda repetitive, but now I kinda just let the INTENSITY swooop me and take over and its niceeee LOVELY MOUND OF CHERRY BLOSSOMS Yuuka's theme! this song would later be arranged as a DiPP song, which is my favorite work in Touhou AS A WHOLE. and this song is present in both of them makes it double awesome! no other song could describe a lovely mound of cherry blossoms better than this can, It feels so natural and GORGEOUS, throw me in the wilderness and let me live amongst the mosquitoes (TᗣT) and become one with the WEEED ENIGMATIC DOLL anyways last song, my 2nd favorite from this tracklist, This the type of song I could call a COMPOSITION or PIECE OF ART without sounding pretentious ;-; again this song also appeared in DiPP, and I prefer it and CHERRY BLOSSOMS in that album, but this song is still GODLY, the menacing and bouncy stringggs over the climax is intense and grand, and the piano breakdowns in this song is great, that way it rides on top of the climax at the end is SOO GOOOD ;-; And I havent mentioned, the intro is great. play it and close your eyes, I feel like I'm conducting a grand orchestra performing a piece, and the DUN DUN DROP IS JSUT SOOOG GODODOODODOODOOD ANYWAYS, I've said alot and I probably have more to say , but I'll keep them for a full on review video of this OST, I LOVE IT TO DEATH AND IVE BEEN WAITING "PATIENTLY" FOR YOU TO DROP IT, I can't imagine waiting 3 months for this, but I dont have to because I did ;-; GOOD JOB I LOVE WHAATCHA DID and much love. have a nice day ^~^
theres a lot i can say per track honestly, as i too have my own written notes too like zun. when making this while album, my main goal was to make every character theme sound distinct in their own elements. it was a destructive risk but i believe it paid out in its own way. everyone would at least have one favorite to pick from. ...I'll let you in on a lil secret: Enigmatic Doll had the goal of sounding like Magical Astronomy~
I used primarily MA instruments. Yes! I had a chart back then dissecting every instrument possible…At least using what I had since I did not have the real guitar instrument used in MA. I had a very deep obsession with Magical Astronomy when I think about it nowadays lmao
