    I had the 1996 Cobra convertible that has more power and bigger brakes. Three 200# + men went from Fort Worth to Detroit for the Ford 100 year event and we made it back without bloodshed. I pasted my Cobra to my USAF son that is 42 now. I enjoyed this series alao my mom had the 1973 450SL that had both tops. Go Mustang !!!

      Due to altitude, the cars in this video likely lost around 1.2-1.3 seconds.
      Generally speaking, an engine loses three percent of its rated power for every 1,000 feet of altitude gained. This means you could lose as much as 20% of your vehicle's horsepower at an altitude of 6750 feet. Let´s say a 1992 SL500 would accelerate from 0-100kmh in 6.3 seconds, at higher altitudes the car would clock about 7.6 sec.

    • @IKhanNot
      @IKhanNot Год назад +4

      @SillyDooDooHead Actually that is testing the car to it's fullest capabilities because we can see how it performs at altitude. If it performs well then it will do a brilliant job at sea level.

    The o ring kit is $9 dollars to rebuild all 12 of the SL top cylinders. I’ve done it to 2 cars, it’s not a bad job.

    • @fatherhood2
      @fatherhood2 Год назад

      How many hours did that take?

    • @mowerplus
      @mowerplus Год назад

      With vise on a workbench, propane torch, a good set of snap ring pliers. The Bow cylinders need the snap ring pliers and the heat. There is some cylinders with a plain snap ring will have to have a hole drilled. This hole is used to stick a pick in to push the snap ring up to get a tool under the ring to pop it out.
      Time, I’d allow a whole week for the first time. The main lift cylinder requires removing the rear panels and sub woofer.
      I would do the front cylinders 1st. If they bust, you and the interior get soaked in oil.
      The tonneau cover and rear latch are very easy to get too.
      The main lift is the worst. The bow cylinders can be pulled out and put back in 3-5 hours, no panels need to be removed, just manipulate the roof by hand to gain access to the cylinders pivot/mounting pins. You need a magnet to catch the clips. Watch some videos on the subject.
      If you need more help, let me know and I can get you some contact info.

    At the mile high elevation the Mustang has approximately 181 horsepower to work with and a power to weight ration of 19 to 1. The Nissan 300 ZX has 187 HP and a PTWR of 18 to 1. The Jaguar XK8 has 244 HP and a PTWR of 16 to 1. While the Mercedes 500 SL has 271 HP and a PTWR of 15 to 1. With cars this old and of questionable maintenance history there are a myriad of factors as to why their performance is what it is. However, the Mustang delivers 285 pound feet of torque (not adjusted for the mile high elevation) at just 3500 RPM. It also has a manual transmission which in a modern car would handicap it's acceleration. But in older cars auto transmissions weren't always the quick shifters they are today. Besides, you can drive a manual as hard or easy as you like. Older luxury convertibles auto transmissions were tuned for smooth acceleration not rocket launch starts. The slowest car, the Nissan 300 ZX has not only a poor power to weight ration but it only make 198 foot pounds of torque which doesn't arrive until 4800 RPM. That's a recipe for slow acceleration. Of course, fastest time wins the race but if we're judging on efficient use of power then the Mercedes and the Jag with their far superior power to weight rations are slower than Christmas. It might be fun to see what a couple of thousand in practical mods could do for all of these cars though. After all, when new all of these cars turned in 6 second to 6.5 second 0-60 times and the elevation is not enough to explain 3 to 5 second slower acceleration times.

If you want a truly age irrelevant and fair build quality test, please get your decibel meter you use on the IKE and test how quiet the cabins are at 75 mph on I25 tops down. Make sure the roll bar is manually raised with wind shield attached on the SL. I promise Andre he will discover the difference between a $100k car and the others.

      The benefit of stuffing three different tests in a single video is less of a need for filler content, and thus a lot less forced humor\poorly landing jokes. I'm betting they had a lot of bad attempts at extra Top Gear jokes in this one, but they had the good sense to cut out the bad ones and keep the good content while still having plenty of footage to end up with a complete video.
      As long as they don't try to stretch out small tests\videos into longer formats, I think they can continue this success level. Don't be afraid to release a 8 minute video if 5 minutes of the original cut are just bad jokes and better off being removed; the final published release will end up with much longer viewer retention, which is good for both ad revenue and for RUclips algorithms.

      Injector cleaner helped at first, but the misfire came back later.

    You have found the best cars for hurricane observation I guess, but you should have let known about that in advance that you are becoming hurricane chaser.
    The SL hard top is the way to go in case of hurricane challenges and then it should work quite well, at least my experience from the early 90s to winter 1997 having 3 of these from small 320 to V12 SL600 , but the SL500 being the best for sure cause the V12 is not the best regarding consumption and a nightmare regarding maintenance.
    And for sure the SL has the best value on the used market and in the future when spare parts will no longer be available for most of the others. Mercedes Classic will have parts for ages while the others will not like the seals this SL needs so desperately.

    It would suck to live a mile above sea level. Your cars are just automatically slower

    Andre bought a dog. I paid 8K for my 98 Sl500 and it is way better shape than that junker Andre bought and is very reliable and fast.

      Outside of that car wash test, a good example of that car could sweep all these tests. There's no reason to have brought an SL that was that unsorted. I think he saw 49k on the clock and forgot how rough 30 years can be on rubber seals.

    I'm not a fan of those high-pressure washes because 1) they don't do a great job of getting all the dirt off my vehicle and 2) some of them are so powerful that they can even shoot water through the door and sunroof seals on regular vehicles!

    I think the Jag looks like it’s been used the most, but that’s not always a bad thing.
