I've always had great respect for Mr.BR regarding his command over the language and the way he understands films. I've always waited to read his reviews in THE HINDU then. Missing them now. Good job, Mr. BR. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more.
Great analysis. It would have been better had you included the BGM from climax; when Manga & group walk towards Kaali , the drum beat slowly gaining momentum to indicate her heart beat. Ilayaraja for a reason; Ilayaraja for ever. No one will ever be born like Ilayaraja again to tell a story with just BGM.
Inclusion of bgm from climax is not enough sir...illayaraja, the king of music, deserves a complete episode across a cross section of various phenominal hits...which literally sailed thru to audience solely due to his score...
Mr.Rangan, you are a precious gem for Tamil cinema. This is the biggest award to Mahendran. Balu Mahendra, Ilaiyaraja. Rajinikanth and Shoba. Awesome sir. Keep up the good work and keep enlightening us.
Really what a act, rajni shobha jaya lakshmi sarath babu. This is the film. That's why director mahendran got the artists wonderful thought. No body do the film equal Kali character as Rajnikant. Keep it up mahendran.
Absolute no-nonsense balanced review of the movie! Goes in to depths and explores the many facets of how this movie was envisioned, formulated, and handed over to the many generations by the genius minds of the industry. How can anyone not get a whiff of this fragrant flower that adorns thorns, that smells sweet, even after generations have passed by!
Just saw Mullam Malarum on prime. And as is ritual, searched for BR review. And viola,What a joy to find he has done a review for this. And what a beautiful pice of analysis. Covers the writing, cinematography, music, acting and every minute detail.
As a film reviewer, you continue to amaze me. Somehow, to me, it feels like the other RUclips reviewers are still playing catch-up to things as simple as film appreciation, whilst criticizing. Please do a video series on how to review.
Got to give credit to Mr. Mahendra for creating the character Manga played by Ms. 'Fatafat' Jayalaxmi. Lost count about the number of times I have fallen in love with the character Manga. Manga is a foodie, she is the only character in the film which is not afraid of Kali, and is not afraid of expressing her love Kali. I have never seen a character like Manga in Indian Cinema.
Good analysis of a great movie, thank you BR. I remember maybe some 12 years back, even at that time Doordarshan was something that was totally forgotten, but I was glued to Doordarshan for 3 hours only because they were showing Mullum Malarum. Now I might watch this movie again after your analysis. I'm a big fan of good movies, such as ones of K.Balachander, Mahendran, Maniratnam and Kamalhaasan, but an even bigger fan of Rajinikanth. So, when good movies and Rajiniism joins together I'm so proud and elated - examples, Mullum Malarum, Thillu Mullu, Nettrikan, Moondru Mudichu, Johnny, Ragavendrar, Thalapathy and now Kaala. Of course I'm crazy for Thalaivar's superstardom mass movies, but then I yearn for movies that use the actor Rajini. And, Rajini is a rare star that can combine great acting and mass in one movie, best examples Thalapathy and Kaala. When I saw your review of Kaala, while I respect your opinion and agree to one or two points, I really felt the movie is so much better and had those layers that required more time and discussion and even appreciation. Anyway, we can agree to disagree :). But for me Kabali, Kaala and possibly the new Karthik Subbaraj-Thalaivar movie are smart ways of Rajini transitioning his style of movies gradually after the lessons he learnt from Linga disaster. Collaborating with new age directors and adapting is his way of staying relevant in contemporary cinema, and he has done that exceeding well for the last 43 years.
what a amazing performance of Shobha and Rajani. Especially Shobha, She was a natural actress of Indian cinema world ever has been seen. Her loss is big of big loss in Cinema world.
Wow...your analysis is marvelous. Adi pennae song is one of the best of the best from Illaiyaraja. All time fav movie of Rajini. Wish directors now could make use of his acting talents. Thank you for a great piece.
U r amazing sir.... Actually the best tamil you tube channel for films-film companion south...... I see u as a film teacher... U educate people who want to enter into cinema field as a writer or a director...
Those good olden days we lack these type of review or knowledge of frames. Thanks for your time to take us back. Looking forward for your review to other ace old movies
My interpretation of the title title is "even the thorn can bloom" as opposed to only a bud can bloom..It refers to a thorn like Kali, who keeps hurting kumuran all the time, finally blooms and gives up Valli
Please do a detailed analysis of Thalapathi. I feel it is unique for the intensity and sense of tension packed into every scene, heightened by Ilayaja's fantastic BGMs.
OMG! Donno how I missed your reviews this long. Whatta beautiful analysis!! Even for those who don't know about frames, lights, BGM or how to interpret a shot/story, this is a bible. Hats off sir!!
Great sir ...I watched this movie many times still not boring... EVEN ONE SCENE is not wasted...agreed I like to watch this kind of films nowadays in theater..but it is hard
One of the most outstanding cult movie of Tamil cinema. How a director made a debut with a cult classy movie ? I think J.Mahendran is the first , followed by Balu Mahendra and etc . Sir , your analysis is also so extrodinary . Please make atleast small anlysis of Director Bala's movies and also Kamal Hassan's directural ventures , and Selvaragan . Please
Srivas S , what about other movies bro and other Directors ,I have mentioned . I want him to make an analysis of Bala's many the movies especially ' Paradesi ' and also Selvaragan's movies except Aairathil Oruvan . Its a shit .
I love paradesi as well, would love to see a detailed analysis. But it is harsh to say, Selva's other ventures are shit. Samples Kadhal Konden, Pudhupettai, 7G and Maykkam Enna. All of these have great music and cinematography, outstanding writing and direction and of course writing and direction. Although 7G would have been better with Danush. Personally, the combination of Danush, Selva, Yuvan and the late Na. Muthukumar, is one of the best combo to have happened to Tamil cinema. Of course, GV's AO and Maykkam Enna; Karthi in AO are also great.
Pls review any of these movies
At first I didn't want to watch the whole 18-min video.. Now, I am off to watch the movie, again :) Mahendran! ... As a reviewer and a celebrity yourself, pls insinuate today's filmmakers to try their hands like this. Thanks.
The interpretation given for the harsh drum beats bgm when Valli finds the next morning her foot decorated and feels happy that there is pain of daily life even within happiness of the brother sister bond is new, interesting and fantastic.
OMG...BR u really a master of film.appreciation...seen Mullum Malarum a lot of times, never realized it had so much nuance...esp. The background score, the cinematography.... Wow...
one of the best music moment was when kaali returns from the hospital, sister realizes he lost a hand and the harsh music is played,no dialogues, pristine acting
+ adding to the writing, the final dialogue from Kali shows his character has not changed. (Enaku eppavum ungala pidikala sir) That's quite impressive character writing even in this era. Thanks for bringing one of all time favourite movie 👍 Expecting uthiri pookal next
While it does sound nice for very many of us, Kali deep down knows, he's a bum to let the Engineer go away. Pride is good but senseless pride is stupid!

The best movie of Tamil cinema : Mullum Malarum. The best movie of Mahendran ayya : Mullum Malarum Best Movie of Rajinikanth : Mullum Malarum The best thing BR ever did : Mullum Malarum Video Simply Mullum Malarum is the best.
Truly a classic and i loved the way you walked us thro the movie as a critic. It certainly is all about the writing - so refreshing approach where these film makers gave the audience lot of credit for their intelligence...unlike the many directors we see today
OMG #BR you are wayyyyy ahead of anyone in this Movie Review field.... No wonder you cannot be classified under any heading. Sooperb Dissection of yet another ATF film of mine... Keep them coming Sir!!!!
Excellent breakdown Mr.Rangan. Especially liked the analysis of framing and depth which was a trademark with Balu Mahendra even in his later movies. Personally I would like if you could review few older gems like Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal , aval oru thodaekathai and maybe Heyram or jhonny
Absolutely brilliant. I have never such a detailed analysis before. May I request for an episode exclusive on Balu Mahendra’s film language, especially the camera works of veedu, azhiyatha kolangal etc?
BR great flash back. So many details to watch out for. Will share with friends as you suggested. One more food of thought. I think you should upload these flash back and review with in Tamil and English for Tamil speaking audience and non Tamil speaking audience. These videos should reach lot of people those who learn about films and filmmaking. Thanks for what you are doing.
It's really feels awesome to watch your dissection for a classic cult mullum malarum . Sir "Azhiyatha kolangal " a film directed by balu mahendra was a cult film deals with adolescence in a artistic way. Literally its a only film which dealed adolescence to the core. Please try to review the film sir
Superb Review :-) You explained the position of the camera but I have doubt that Balu Mahendra sir done all these positions in his mind. I guess some position may not be intentionally. Why I'm saying is you did interview with Maniratnam sir and he mentioned that "நான் காட்சியை சாதாரணமாகத் தான் வைத்தேன், இப்படியெல்லாம் யோசித்து வைக்கவில்லை " . recently Pandiyarajan spoke about his movie "Aaan Paavam" and said “everybody says about every scene with more details / kuriyeedu but I didn't think that way.. it was jus simple scene”. I guess nowadays reviewers are exaggerating the scenes with more explanation / kuriyeedu but anyhow it was interesting review and got few details like “Oh ippadiyum irukka” :-) . All the very best.

And the bgm. That continues after that when the focus is on Valli is also the same. Brilliant
Inclusion of bgm from climax is not enough sir...illayaraja, the king of music, deserves a complete episode across a cross section of various phenominal hits...which literally sailed thru to audience solely due to his score...

Super star for a reason 😎❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥
As always brilliantly analysed by BR, a man who brings in a refreshing sense of awareness to cinema journalism.
Ranking Rajini’s best works,
1. Mullum Malarum
2. Jhonny
3. 6-60 varai
4. Netrikkan
5. Ilamai oonjaladugirathu
and Engeyo ketta kural

Sri Satyajit Ray is popping out of Mahendran in these Mullum Malarum and Uthiri Pookkal. I adore the two great creators.
Your this analysis will make new generation go back to this movie and watch.

Sir do you notice these details in your very first watch ...or just watch it another time to notice these details. Curious to know ☺️
I hope it is not for first time
A trained eye will pick many of these right away. Like every other, this needs mastery too.

one of my favorite movies in tamil.Great analysis by you sir and letting to know us by this video.we still more from you.
Why did not u mention about Ilayaraja music. Especially the climax one... The music matches the confused mind of Shobhaaa.... Very very soulful BGM
As it is released on 9th jul... Take any KB movies like moondru mudichu or avargal
Great analysis. Need more of these. Can we have Uthiri Pookal, Nizhal Nijamaagiradhu, Katradhu Tamil.

Rajinikanth - The Actor 👑🗿📈
For correction - Movie was directed by Mahendran, not Balu Mahendra. You have mentioned it numerous times not sure why.
do review for balu mahendra's one of the masterpiece "Veedu" Movie.
Nice one sir
that's awesome and expecting more like this on all best movies and no border on the map
Fantastic review. Being a Rajini fan, i realy enjoyed it.
