at 2:02 you said it right "The tone of the movie changing". You just pointed out the exact and accurate point why this film bombed at BOX office and not well with the audience and reviewers. Even Selvraghavan has confused with the screenplay as the length of this film is shortened in final cut due to its humongous length of shots. People at that time doesn't have the knowledge of understanding a complex narration and multi layered story lines. But Telugu audience much appreciated this movie coz they have scene this kind of complex story lines and mythical type of screenplay. Hope Selva will give his best shot with the second part of this movie and he doesn't make the mistake what he did in this film. Also he needs to get the perfect ambitious producer rather than this film's producer who called him as "Psycho" at that time.

For the question asked around 19:08, there is a clear basic science behind. When Sound is beyond 170 decibels, a human brain loses sanity.. I can explain like this..
All the three characters enter a destructed kingdom, which is the seventh trap created by the Cholas. We see some long hair men pulling some stone-made instruments like in Ali baba and 40 thieves, which makes the structures in the kingdom to break.. They create sounds and the destruction sound is also too high.. So we also get audio sounds of what the character experiences as something very deafening. This makes them go insane and shoot at each other.. We later see, in the second half, these characters come and remove their dress in front of the old man and he checks for marks in their body.. Later these three characters are treated by acupunture type methods, by planting nails on their back.. They shout and in pain and get relieved from insanity.. we understood it in first watch itself..

I think selvaraghavan should have taken a little bit of time in post production as well as a little bit on screenplay then the movie is there. Still AO is there and independent. Excellent analysis and resonates with what I felt after watching this movie first time but couldn't articulate well enough. I've felt this movie is both uniquely underrated and overrated at the sametime. Unique and ambitious vision by the director, but execution was all over the place and failed to make the connect. I particularly remember, that at the interval block I was so excited and anticipating what adventure next and the second half felt like a totally different movie. And yes Reema Sen, just didn't fit, though good acting, didn't fit the authenticity aspect. This is something I've felt with many Selvaraghavan's heroines in his various films. Still would like to see a part 2 of this movie and have a closure. On a sidenote, yes, 7G is one of Selva's best yet and it was quite holistic, authentic, well executed and had that connect. Looking forward to his Nenjam Marapadhillai.
Looking forward to your analysis possibly on Aalavandhan and Hey Ram. I feel these two were extraordinary movies that fell prey to too much censoring and conservative or immature mass audience at that point in time (those movies way ahead of time).

Actually the second half is like metaphoric film making. No one could have received the second half on first time watching. May be you can try it once again. I understood like that. Reemasen character is well set and that is the only character which is constantly traveling in same tone and she has done a good job. One more thing it is not at all appreciated at that time. I hope there is a different meaning for overrated.

People in the comments claim AO is better than Bahubali . But I don’t understand why haven’t they made this film a hit. AO is a hit film in Telugu and opened market for Actor Karthi in Telugu. Even today it’s one of the most frequently telecasted film in ZEE Telugu. I guess that’s the reason why period films are made less in tamil. Same goes to Telugu as well . People didn’t value films like 1 Nenonakkadine during its release and none of the cast and crew were given its their due credit for the film that year. But It later gained cult classic status . But No use Directors and actors stopped thinking of physiological thrillers till 2018.

I had watched AO when it released and absolutely hated it. But later happened to watch it again and really fell for it simply because of the authernticity and the details of the nuanced script. You need a lot of attention to understand the details of the picture and understand his allegories..
    1. AO is referring to Karthi or the siddhar in the picture and it is their picture shown both in the first and the last title card. It is the destiny of these cholan citizen chosen to protect the legacy of the Kingdom and the bloodline in the issues of adversities. The first creates all these traps and predicts and the second tries to save them.
    2. Its really quite an allegory(may be he didnt mean it but the similarities are too much).
    a. The izham province was called a izham and was part of the chola Kingdom during those times. So the current Srilankan tamils are part of the chola kingdom.
    b. Of course the war crimes are a huge similarity.
    c. MGR was born in Srilanka and though a malayali was actually a prominent tamil leader who actively helped during the initial phase of LTTE to negotiate with the Sri Lankan govt.
    d. India initially brought them together for discussions but later was turned against each other by the Sri Lankan govt, got hit by LTTE it self and then really couldn't do much when the human rights violation occured.
    e. The tiger symbolism of course and the life of the izham people during the final days is quite the same.
    3. They had to stay at that place because thats where the messenger would come in search of them. If they change places now it won't happen. Its not like people had forgotten about them as well. Looking at the number of mad men there we can see that they constantly saw people from Pandyas and researchers coming to this place but none are the messenger.
Since, everyone is made mad by the siddhar in the kingdom they never learn the truth of their Kingdom back in India.
    4. See even Reema sen had sorcery skills, but they don't work in wars else she would have used through the film. This is as per the film.

I think this is the first video from BR that I strongly disagree with. Comparing it with Bahubali and calling bahubali a well written film is not right. Why was there an item song in Bahubali 1? The entire story for Bahubali was contained in Bahubali 2. Was there even a necessity for part 1? Other than shabby CG and Reema sen’s poor lip sync, AO had all the makings of a masterpiece.

    • @CS2K23
      @CS2K23 4 года назад +2

It was not a typical body show item song...it's way more artistic and nothing obscene just to attract audience. Also AO has much more unnecessary steamy stuff compared to bb. What BR was saying was that AO changes its theme after every few scenes. There's a strong reason it got rejected by the audience not just VFX. Rohit Aradhya It has a valid reason which can be related to the history. The language" Tamil" is the first and foremost language while other South Indian languages like Telugu .etc got derived from Tamil. So, if you relate this language evolution and development with scene , we can have better understanding. Character- Anita ( Reema Sen) who acts like a person from modern Chola dynasty, sings the song in Telugu and questions the king Parthiban like sing any poetic song ( Bharani, kalampagam, Ula) but Parthiban could sing only the worries they faced living in a arid region to safeguard themselves. He makes her to know that they aren't well versed in poetic and language development despite they fight for food! Hence the king Parthiban
      sings in Tamil.

I'm a Sinhalese and coming from my point of view, I feel that the telugus or Dravidians made this movie to flop. People can say that this movie was ahead of its time, no Tamils will understand, but I can also say that the so called telugus disguised as Tamils , can also be against this movie....for simple terms....Cholas vs Pandyas is also perceived as Tamils vs the outer world. But the truth is, it was just a story telling between two different dynasties among the the Tamils...or maybe the Tamils of Sri Lanka vs India..or Bharat/ Hindustan.

Dude In Telugu it was a hit film and average in Tamil. It opened market for actor Karthi in Telugu. It’s the most frequently telecasted film in ZEE Telugu. Telugu’s have always appreciated good content irrespective of the language. Don’t comment in Telugu without knowing completely about them.

Anyone can write a story and even better writting in the usual story would definitely will look good for eyes. That is what Baahubali. But ayirathil oruvan is unique way of writing in a different genre where the king and his people waiting for a messenger for 700 yrs. I accept this story written with some toppings for film making. We accept Ponniyin Selvan though it is a PUNAIVU KADHAI

A clear distinction needs to be made! Bahubali is a fantasy and better written as a screenplay, well executed on screen.
Whil AO was a great film conceptualized, but not well executed!

12:12 no wonder you find bahubali is well written, you acclaim movies like bigil over kaithi, kaatru veliyidai over vishwaroopam, nayagan over hey ram... Shows your inclination towards masala movies... Doesn't change the fact that bahubali is a badly written movie and I don't find any world building in bahubali, it didn't have any of the ancient touches, folklore elements, mural, or unique rules/politics that define a fantasy world.... All it had was big sets and cgi filled large scale battle sequences

Baahubali was indeed a showoff kind of film.Though the war sequence was beautifully choreographed it was quite lengthy.though the Indiana Jones style first half in AO was completely different from the historical thing in second half the former was to show how difficult it was to reach the cholas
